Itachi Uchiha (うちは イタチ, Uchiha Itachi) is a character in the Naruto manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. Itachi is the older brother of Sasuke Uchiha, and is responsible for killing all the members of their clan, sparing only Sasuke. He appears working as a terrorist from the organisation Akatsuki and serves as Sasuke’s greatest enemy. During the second part of the manga, Itachi becomes involved in attacks to ninjas possessing tailed-beast creatures until facing Sasuke in a one-on-one battle. Although Itachi perishes during the final duel, it is later revealed that Itachi had a secret reason for assassinating the Uchiha clan. Itachi is a playable character in most of the video games from the series.

Itachi’s character has been popular with readers of the manga,[6] and has been positively received by critics. His appearance as an antagonist has been praised by several writers, although some have considered his initial appearance to be unsurprising. The gradual revelations of his past and its impact on the story has also received positive reception,[7][8] and his fights were noted to be «one of the best» in the series.[9][10][11] Numerous types of merchandise have been released in Itachi’s likeness, including keychains, plush dolls and figurines.
Creation and designEdit
When Itachi Uchiha is first mentioned by Sasuke Uchiha in the manga, Masashi Kishimoto had not planned out the character’s backstory. The only idea he had was to attribute to Itachi some violent action that would have Sasuke wanting to kill him. However, when Itachi was introduced, Kishimoto had the idea to make Itachi Konoha’s secret agent who killed his clan under their orders.[12] Itachi was originally conceived as the leader of Konoha’s Special Assassination and Tactical Squad called the «Anbu», dubbed the Itachi Squad (イタチ隊, Itachi-tai), which would have been a 70-man group divided into four teams, specializing in assassination and other illicit operations. However, this idea was scrapped in favor of the current Itachi working for the Akatsuki.[13] From all the Akatsuki characters Kishimoto designed, Itachi is his favorite based on his backstory.[14]
Itachi’s Japanese voice actor, Hideo Ishikawa, often talked with Sasuke’s Japanese actor, Noriaki Sugiyama, about their characters. When the two characters first confronted, both Ishikawa and Sugiyama found Itachi’s massacre of the Uchiha clan hard to believe and started to read the Naruto manga in order to see if Itachi was hiding something. After Itachi’s death, the two actors noted that in the end Itachi served as a good older brother to Sasuke.[15] English actor Crispin Freeman was pleased with voicing Itachi regardless of how many times he revisited the series.[16]

Itachi is a member of the Uchiha Clan from the village of Konohagakure and the elder brother of Sasuke Uchiha. He grew up as the child prodigy of the Uchiha clan, establishing milestones for not only Sasuke, but also for future Uchiha to live up to.[17] His early childhood was marred by war, the violence of which caused him to seek peace at any cost. Upon learning that his clan was planning a coup d’état to take control of Konoha, after his clan was accused of attacking the village with the Nine Tails, Itachi provides Konoha with intelligence on his clan’s actions during his two years as a member of the ANBU. Over time, Itachi distances himself from his clan, as some clan members believed he murdered his best friend, Shisui Uchiha, to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, Mangekyo Sharingan, lit. «Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye»).[18][19][20]
In reality, as Shisui possesses the ability to subliminally manipulate others and shares Itachi’s love for the village, he intended to use his gift on the Uchiha clan leader to stop the coup d’état. However, Shisui is mortally wounded by the Leaf High Council member Danzo Shimura, who then takes his eye to achieve his own ideal of peace. When Shisui entrusts Itachi with his remaining eye, Itachi covers up Shisui’s death to make it appear it was his doing. Eventually, in return for Danzo’s offer to spare his younger brother, Itachi slaughters his entire clan.[21] After creating the misconception that he murdered their family in cold blood to give Sasuke the mindset to become strong enough to kill him once he is capable, Itachi leaves the village, although he warns Danzo not to harm Sasuke. Meeting up with Konoha’s Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi, who promises to do what he can to look after Sasuke, Itachi reveals his intentions to continue to protect the village from the shadows.[22] Soon after perceiving them as a threat to Konoha, Itachi joins the Akatsuki to ensure they do not endanger his village. Itachi becomes good friends with his partner Kisame Hoshigaki, who expresses concern for Itachi’s wellbeing.[23]
Itachi debuts in Part I after Hiruzen’s death, when he uses his infiltration of Konoha to hunt down Naruto Uzumaki as an excuse to secretly check on Sasuke’s wellbeing.[24] After engaging with Kakashi Hatake and some of Konoha’s forces, he reveals Akatsuki’s goal to gather the Jinchuriki which are the people that contained the tailed beasts which there are nine of. Itachi also learns that Naruto is under the protection of Jiraiya and sets up a trap to lure the experienced ninja away to grab the boy.[23][25] However, as Jiraiya comes to Naruto’s aid, Itachi finds himself facing Sasuke and directs his brother back on the path of getting stronger by defeating him before he and Kisame fall back.[26][27]
In Part II, Itachi uses one of Sasori’s informants as a clone of himself to hold off Naruto and the rest of his team while he and the others seal away Shukaku the One Tail.[28] Itachi remains on the sidelines until learning that Sasuke has finally severed his ties to Orochimaru, having absorbed him and now being strong enough to settle matters. Prior to his fight with Sasuke, Itachi meets with Naruto and, after questioning his intentions to save Sasuke, ensures the youth’s safety with a crow with Shisui’s Sharingan (写輪眼, lit. «Copy Wheel Eye», English manga: «Mirror Wheel Eye») as a countermeasure against Sasuke if he gains his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and attempts to attack Konoha.[29] Sasuke ultimately tracks him down and they engage in their final battle, during the course of which he uses his Mangekyo Sharingan to push Sasuke to his limits. In doing so, Orochimaru is drawn out from Sasuke’s body, and Itachi seals him away with his Totsuka blade before finally succumbing to his mysterious illness.[30] As his final act, Itachi implants his Amaterasu technique within Sasuke, meant as a protective measure that will kill Tobi in case he ever tries to approach Sasuke and reveal the truth of their clan’s slaughter.[31] Unfortunately, having known where Itachi’s loyalties truly lie, Tobi survived and reveals the truth of Itachi’s actions to Sasuke. This gives Sasuke the resolve to destroy the village in revenge for ruining his brother’s and his clan’s lives, eventually having his brother’s Mangekyo Sharingan implanted on him.[22]
Itachi reappears later during the Fourth Great Ninja War, brought back by Kabuto Yakushi using the Reanimation Jutsu, a forbidden summoning jutsu that brings the dead back as immortal corpses, to fight on Tobi’s side.[32] Paired with Nagato and forced to fight Naruto and Killer Bee against his will, Itachi learns of his brother’s intentions and summons the crow he gave Naruto to regain his free will.[33] After sealing Nagato,[33] Itachi heads out to stop Kabuto and encounters Sasuke, with his younger brother wanting to know the truth once it is over.[34][35]
After a long battle, Itachi is pushed to use Izanami to trap Kabuto in an eternal time-loop in his own mind, to have him break his jutsu.[36][37][38] His soul beginning to fade, Itachi uses his Sharingan to project his memories to Sasuke to reveal the full story of the events leading to the Uchiha Clan Massacre. Telling his brother that he does not have to forgive him, Itachi tells Sasuke that he will always love him, no matter what choice he makes from then on.[39] With his brother’s parting words, and accepting defeat after his final battle with Naruto, Sasuke renounces destroying the village and devotes himself to protecting it, fulfilling Itachi’s wish for his younger brother. Sasuke even adopts Itachi’s habit of poking on the forehead as a sign of affection, which Sasuke does with his wife Sakura and their daughter Sarada Uchiha.[40][41]

Itachi is present in the sixth Naruto: Shippuden movie, Road to Ninja, where he leads an alternate-universe Akatsuki to help Naruto. He has a brief cameo in one of the original video animations, and is a playable character in nearly all Naruto video games, including the Clash of Ninja series and the Ultimate Ninja series.[42][43][44][45][46][47] In some games, he utilizes variations of his techniques not seen in the anime or manga.[48] Several merchandise items based on Itachi have been released, including key chains,[49] plush dolls,[50][51] and figurines.[52][53]
ReceptionEdit
Itachi has ranked high in the Weekly Shonen Jump popularity polls for the series, continuously placing in the top 10.[6] He was ranked in fifth position in the polls of 2011, his highest ranking to date.[54] The character received generally positive reviews from several publications for manga, anime, video games, and other related media. IGN reader Jason Van Horn characterized Itachi as «badass» and jokingly mentioned that he is a character to be afraid of since, in his first fight in the series, he does not make any remarkable move.[11] He found that «there is just something about the cold and numb Itachi,» that makes the viewer «want to breakout in chills».[9] IGN’s Charles White liked the episode where the relationship between young Sasuke and Itachi is revealed, and hoped to see more of their past to resolve the mystery of Itachi’s character commenting that learning about their «past has been intriguing».[7] NTT customers voted him as their tenth favorite black haired male anime character.[55] CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama referred to Itachi as one of his favorite characters from Naruto.[56]
In the Shelf Life section from Anime News Network (ANN) Bamboo Dong comments that Itachi is one of her favorite characters from the series, noting his background and his introduction as the best parts of the series.[57] Activeanime writer Davey C. Jones celebrated Itachi’s fights as the best ones in the series, noting his abilities to be as amazing as a «sci-fi ninja».[58] Holly Ellingwood from the same website agrees, citing his fight against Kakashi Hatake as one «few will be able to forget». The reviewer also praised Itachi’s attitude, commenting that he «is as cold and as ruthless as any villain yet».[10]
In a review of Volume 16 of the manga, Deb Aoki from About.com listed Itachi’s introduction in the series as one of the cons from the volume. She praised his first fight in the series as very entertaining, meant to «whet readers’ appetites for future fights between Konoha ninja and the Akatsuki».[59] James Musgrove commented that Itachi and his partner Kisame «make a dramatic and well-timed entrance into the story».[60] However, Jason Van Horn criticised the first battle between Itachi and Sasuke, as «good» but not «as epic as it should’ve been».[61] His last fight with Sasuke before dying was considered «epic» by Casey Brienza from ANN. She found it to be «a battle of minds» since, even after Itachi’s death, Sasuke changes his mind about him when he learns about his past. She also anticipated the impact of Itachi’s past revelations on the future storyline of Naruto.[8] Despite disliking how the anime Shippuden used Itachi’s light novel as part of the series, Chris Beveridge from the Fandom Post enjoyed Itachi’s impact on both Sasuke and Naruto.[62] Writer Jason Thompson highly praised his visual tortures, due to the effect it has on the victims, reminding him of the antagonist from Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s film Cure notable for its horror scenes. Nevertheless, he criticized Itachi’s death scene as a result of his disease rather than being killed by Sasuke, taking all the blame from his brother in the process.[63] In 2014, IGN listed him as the fifth best Naruto character when the series ended.[64]

Itachi Uchiha (うちはイタチ, Uchiha Itachi) was a shinobi of Konohagakure’s Uchiha clan who served as an Anbu Captain. He later became an international criminal after murdering his entire clan, sparing only his younger brother, Sasuke. He afterwards joined the international criminal organisation known as Akatsuki, whose activity brought him into frequent conflict with Konoha and its ninja — including Sasuke who sought to avenge their clan by killing Itachi. Following his death, Itachi’s motives were revealed to be more complicated than they seemed and that his actions were only ever in the interest of his brother and village, making him remain a loyal shinobi of Konohagakure to the very end.

Itachi was the first child born to Mikoto and Fugaku Uchiha. His early childhood was marked with violence: when he was four years old, the Third Shinobi World War waged and he witnessed first-hand many of the war’s casualties. The death and destruction he experienced at such a young age traumatised Itachi and made him a pacifist,[6] leading to him training non-stop to achieve his dream of becoming a ninja among ninja in order to erase fighting from the world.[7] At age 5, after becoming a big brother to Sasuke, Itachi was approached by Shisui, who offered to train together. Soon, the two became best friends, forming a brother-like bond as they continued to teach the other new tricks. During the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox’s Attack, he was home alone looking after Sasuke, followed by Itachi rescuing Mikoto from falling debris,[8] and in the anime seeking shelter with Izumi.[9] The Nine-Tails’ attack had soured relations between Konoha’s leadership and the Uchiha, the former believing the latter to be responsible. The Uchiha were relocated to the edge of the village, isolating them from the rest of the village and making it easier to monitor them.
At age 6, Itachi enrolled into the Academy, where he consistently scored the highest in each subject and quickly learned any skill taught to him, resulting in him being praised as the best of his generation.[10] After four months, his teachers unanimously agreed let him take the graduation exam early due to Itachi being more than advanced enough for genin-level, which he passed later that month.[11] During this time, he began seriously studying the history of the world, gaining a great appreciation for it. On the day he graduated as the youngest post-war graduate, he was approached by Danzō Shimura, who assessed Itachi’s thinking.[12]
Joining Team 2, Itachi went on to honing his skills to chūnin level, leading to him drawing the attention of Konoha’s leaders. Meeting the criteria, Fugaku allowed him to sit in on clan meetings in the Naka Shrine basement.[13] Nearly a year since graduating, Itachi had mastered ninjutsu to the extent his missions went too easy, though Yūki Minazuki didn’t recommend him for the Chūnin Exams. After turning eight, as Team 2’s genin had distinguished themselves the most during the year, they were tasked with guarding the Fire Daimyō during his annual trip to Konoha. During the mission, the convoy was attacked by a masked individual, who killed Tenma Izumo before Itachi, resulting in him awakening his Sharingan, which he mastered at the same age.[14] In the anime, Itachi accompanied his friend Shisui on a three-part training exercise, only to interrupt a battle between the Third Hokage’s Anbu and Root. After having driven out the Root ninja, Itachi learned from Shisui about having his own sense of morals from various viewpoints instead of one.[15] At age 10, Konoha allowed Itachi to compete in the Chūnin Exams alone, which he passed and became a chūnin.[16]

At age 11, Itachi joined the Anbu as its youngest member.[17] In the anime, Itachi is assigned to Team Ro, working alongside Tenzo and with Kakashi Hatake as his captain. During his mentorship, Itachi became acquainted with Kakashi and showed interest in the Sharingan he possessed despite not being an Uchiha. At one point, they both worked together in a two-man squad following an exchange between Konohagakure and the Prajñā Group of the Land of Woods; killing the latter party after an attempted betrayal.[18] They would work together for two years until Itachi is promoted to a new Anbu team under Danzō’s authority.[19]
Itachi’s accomplishments were a source of great pride for his family, his father viewing him as proof of the Uchiha’s future prosperity and his brother viewing him as a model to live up to. Itachi spent a great deal of time with Sasuke, training with him (though rarely actually training him) and giving him the recognition their father did not. However, for all the attention he received, few truly understood Itachi,[14] believing his isolation to be a result of the gap between his abilities and theirs and not his dissatisfaction with the shinobi’s life of conflict. Eventually, the Uchiha’s disdain for their unfair treatment led them to plan a coup d’état. Fugaku, head of the Uchiha and the coup’s chief conspirator, encouraged Itachi’s advancement into the Anbu’s ranks as a means of spying on the village. Itachi, however, knew an Uchiha coup would lead to intervention from other villages and ultimately start another World War, something he could not support. He instead became a double agent, reporting the Uchiha’s actions to the Third Hokage and the Konoha Council in the hopes it would help them find a peaceful resolution.[20]

Itachi shared the burden of betraying his clan with Shisui. But as time went on it became increasingly clear that peace could not be achieved. Shisui intended to use his Kotoamatsukami on the Uchiha’s leaders to compel them to negotiate, but his right eye was stolen by Danzō before he had a chance. His own options exhausted, Shisui entrusted his remaining eye to Itachi and begged him to protect the village and their family name before drowning himself in the Naka River.[21] Itachi was anguished by Shisui’s death, enough to awaken his Mangekyō Sharingan. When the following day some Uchiha, already suspicious of Itachi, accused him of murdering Shisui and staging a suicide, Itachi lost his composure and attacked them, defeating them easily.[22] A rift was created between Itachi and his family, and his warnings to them to reconsider what they were doing fell on deaf ears. At age 12, he was promoted to Anbu Captain, with his publicly disclosed promotion age being 13 due to Danzō’s request and Hiruzen’s acceptance.[23][24][25] In the anime, Itachi was also given command of his own three-man squad. At one point, Itachi would confront his father in the Naka Shrine basement, who revealed to have had his own Mangekyō Sharingan since the Third Shinobi World War. Having read the Stone Tablet with it and knowing the truth of its power, Fugaku calls for Itachi’s aid in a bloodless revolution by restraining the higher-ups in lieu of controlling the Nine-Tailed Fox much of the clan’s favour of bloodshed. Instead, Itachi would return back to the Konoha Council to report the clan’s imminent revolt.[26]
Although the Third Hokage still wished to negotiate with the Uchiha, Danzō Shimura recognised that there was no longer an outcome that could see the Uchiha clan’s survival. He explained this to Itachi and left him a choice: support the Uchiha’s coup and have the whole clan, including Sasuke, killed in the ensuing conflict, or accept the assignment to wipe out the clan before the coup started and be allowed to spare Sasuke. Itachi chose his brother.[27] Despite having made his choice, Itachi was tormented by guilt, especially with the knowledge that Shisui would most likely not forgive his choice to destroy the clan.[28] However, remembering the words of his father to not let other’s decide things for his life, he resolved to continue his path. While making final preparations, Itachi discovered a masked man sneaking around Konoha. From observing him, he came to believe the man was truly Madara Uchiha bent on provoking some new conflict. Itachi approached him with an offer: he would assist «Madara» with wiping out the Uchiha, taking vengeance against them for abandoning him decades earlier, if Madara would spare the village, to which he agreed.[29]

In one night Itachi and Tobi slaughtered the entire clan. Itachi took it upon himself to personally execute his parents. Despite his betrayal, they bore him no ill-will, instead telling him in the moments before they were killed that they were proud of him and requesting that he take care of Sasuke.[30] Racked by grief for his actions, Itachi saw in Sasuke the only person suitable to punish him for his crimes. In order to set Sasuke on this road he cast himself as the villain, done by allowing Sasuke to find him standing over their parents’ bodies and using Tsukuyomi to torment him with visions of their murders. Sasuke fled, fearing his own death, but Itachi chased him down to divulge the lie he had concocted: he killed their family to test his mettle and now wanted to test himself against the only remaining challenge to him, the little brother he had never loved. He encouraged Sasuke to become strong enough to kill him and take revenge, and to that end suggested he acquire a Mangekyō Sharingan of his own. Itachi left, but was surprised to find Sasuke already pursuing him with a newly-awakened Sharingan. Sasuke’s attempt at vengeance failed and he passed out, but not before seeing Itachi cry with remorse.[31]
Afterwards, he disguised a crow clone as a member of Root to threaten Danzō he would leak Konoha’s secrets to enemy villages if he touched Sasuke, having realised Danzō could not be trusted to keep his promises. For his final business in the village, Itachi visited the Third Hokage and reported his mission completed, much to the Third’s surprise and disappointment. Itachi requested that the Third look after Sasuke, which the Third vowed to do.[32] Itachi left the village publicly a traitor but secretly with a new mission: to infiltrate Tobi’s organisation, Akatsuki, and keep it from moving against Konoha.[33] In the anime, Itachi was ambushed by his former Anbu squad under orders from Danzō, only to trick them into killing each other using genjutsu. At some point after joining Akatsuki, he was initially partnered up with Jūzō Biwa.[26] While growing accustomed to his new setting and working well with his partner, the duo was eventually given a mission in the Land of Water. After completing it, they were ambushed by a hunter-nin squad led by Yagura. While initially pressed by the perfect jinchūriki, Itachi was able to defeat him with Amaterasu, but not before Jūzō was slain.[5]

Sometime later, Orochimaru tried to steal Itachi’s body in order to gain the Sharingan, but Itachi easily overpowered him, trapping him inside a paralysis genjutsu and severing his left hand to prevent him from dispelling it.[34] In the anime, Itachi expressed his disgust at Orochimaru for his inhumane experiments and was about to kill him when Kabuto saved Orochimaru but they were both forced to leave Akatsuki. Later, Itachi was partnered with Kisame Hoshigaki, with whom he bonded over their shared notoriety for killing their own countrymen.[35] To find a replacement for Orochimaru, Itachi helped recruit Deidara, whose art he defeated with his Sharingan’s genjutsu; Deidara would forever after swear vengeance for the humiliating defeat.[36] In the anime, Itachi also aided in the recruitment of Hidan. Pain eventually caught wind of Orochimaru’s attempt to destroy Konoha and requested a team to investigate, which Itachi immediately volunteered for out of concern for Sasuke’s safety.[37]
At some point, Itachi contracted a terminal illness. He kept himself alive through the years with medicine and sheer willpower so that he could live long enough to die by Sasuke’s hand.[38]
Personality
From a young age, Itachi was calm and insightful, showing noticeable maturity for his age and knowledge on how to deal with every situation. For all his accomplishments, talent, and fame, Itachi was a rather humble man. Never arrogant about his own abilities nor underestimating others, most things he said would be unbiased and accurate. If an opponent exceeded his expectations or posed a legitimate challenge to him or his allies, Itachi would freely admit it.[39] As a seven-year-old, his reasoning was on par with a Hokage. Having studied history, not just of his clan or his village but of the world, he gained a broader appreciation of what was important. Learning so much enabled him to understand how events of the past came to happen and, when he applied that same understanding into the future, he became concerned for where things were going.[40] At the same time, Itachi was still fairly naïve as a child in many real-world scenarios and as such was willing to learn from his peers on how to differentiate situations.[15] He lived at a distance, observing individuals and ideas without getting directly involved so that he could fully understand them.[41]
Although this approach prevented him from becoming close with many people, it enabled him to think and act without prejudice or preconceptions, instead evaluating things strictly on their own merits. In the anime, Itachi unintentionally gained many friends and admirers for his genuine concern for others despite his passive nature.[9] He would think about shinobi and origins of the village and its future.[40] For this reason, he never became arrogant about his own abilities or accomplishments; to which, most views or statements he made were usually well-based, seeing the situation for what it was. From this he had no self-righteous loyalty to his clan that was so common among the Uchiha; though he loved his family and wanted the best for them, he knew there were more important things than the Uchiha’s personal aspirations. Itachi’s dream was to become Hokage, though he kept it hidden from others. [16] Itachi was also one of the few villagers of Konoha to hold no grudge against Naruto Uzumaki, believing Naruto to be the greatest victim of the Nine-Tails attack and showed him kindness whenever they met by chance.[42]

A pacifist at heart, Itachi did not actually like fighting and would avoid it when he could. As such, he preferred to rely on Genjutsu as a first option, ending fights with as little damage as possible. When he couldn’t avoid actual combat, he would end the fight as quickly as he could, all the while holding back as much as possible. Despite this, Itachi felt his own needs were secondary to the greater good’s and to that end he became a shinobi. He trained tirelessly to improve himself as quickly as he could and subjected himself to all of the shinobi life’s inconveniences without complaint for the simple motivation of being useful to others. His commitment borderlined recklessness, due to training privately using extremely deadly methods such as dodging a barrage of kunai in the anime.
Being so accomplished as a ninja enabled Itachi to approach problems less violently than others would, satisfying his peace-loving nature. These two extremes of his personality came into conflict as events moved toward the Uchiha Clan Downfall; he did not want to harm his family and sought a peaceful resolution, but knew that the path with the least bloodshed would be the clan’s extermination. When the Uchiha Clan refused to deter from their plans, Itachi was pushed over the edge and his normally polite attitude to his clansmen became more violent, criticising them openly and lashing out at them for the choices that sealed their fates and his own. Despite this, at his heart, Itachi truly hated what he had to do for sake of preserving peace, trembling with hesitation as he prepared to kill his parents and crying upon doing it. With Izumi, valuing her companionship, and aware of her feelings for him, Itachi opted to put Izumi under a powerful Tsukuyomi to allow her to live the life she’d always dreamed with him, allowing her death to be quick and peaceful.
Despite his natural pacifism and kindness, Itachi was possessed of a wrathful and merciless side when those he loved were hurt or threatened. In revenge for Yashiro Uchiha’s cowardly manipulations of his father from the shadows and helping to provoke war against Konohagakure while keeping free of responsibility himself, Itachi used his Tsukuyomi to force him to experience days of torture in an instant after making him realise how weak he was in comparison to Itachi himself. Itachi would later use Tsukuyomi, followed by Amaterasu to execute the helpless Root member Sugaru in revenge for Sugaru poisoning Shisui.[42]
Despite the traumas he endured from killing his own family, Itachi did not blame those among Konoha’s leadership who gave him the mission; though he did not trust Danzō on a personal level, he knew Danzō only had the village’s best interests at heart. But Itachi – partly out of the necessity of his assignment to join Akatsuki – was greatly changed after the massacre, rarely if ever showing emotion. He became more prone to displays of force and permitted certain violent habits of his partner, Kisame, under the pretence that it furthered Akatsuki’s goals.[43] After learning from Hiruzen everything that Itachi endured, Hashirama considered him a greater shinobi than himself.[44] Itachi could not and would not fully shake his pacifistic ways, and would run from confrontation or rein in Kisame if the likelihood of collateral damage became too high for themselves or others. In addition, Itachi would continue to show his morality at times, as he expressed disgust at Orochimaru’s lack of care for human life. While Kisame would sometimes protest, he considered Itachi a good friend and would listen to his instructions. Itachi also had a decent partnership with his previous partner Jūzō, showing respect to him and after his death, placing the remains of Kubikiribōchō in Jūzō’s hand.

Konoha’s peace and protection was always forefront in Itachi’s mind,[45] but it was his dedication to his brother, Sasuke, that took priority in every situation. From the time of Sasuke’s infancy, Itachi tasked himself with looking after him. In the anime, Itachi even correctly guessed Sasuke’s gender before his younger brother’s birth.[46] They’d spend whole days together in the woods around Konoha having adventures and accomplishing self-appointed missions. When Itachi became an accomplished ninja and took much of their father’s attention, Itachi would make special time to fill their father’s shoes for Sasuke’s benefit, at times even refusing his father’s wishes in order to make Sasuke happy. In turn Sasuke wished to be just like his older brother and would often ask Itachi to train him in the ninja arts. Itachi would almost never do so, poking his forehead and promising to train him some other time. Unfortunately, none of these promises were ever kept.[47]

It was Sasuke’s safety that ultimately convinced Itachi to go through with killing the rest of the Uchiha, believing his own damnation was worth it if it ensured Sasuke’s survival. Even though he did it for Sasuke, Itachi wanted to be punished for his crimes and selected Sasuke as the one to take vengeance against him. To push Sasuke in this direction, Itachi withheld the true reason for his actions and instead took on the persona of a man who had no love for his younger brother. Per the persona, Itachi cared about Sasuke only because of the eyes that he could take to gain Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. His actions in Akatsuki were meant to reinforce this persona, and whenever he met Sasuke over the years he would taunt his weakness and encourage him to get strong enough to kill him. His plan was that, once he had been killed, Sasuke would be hailed as a hero. Itachi never wanted Sasuke to learn the truth surrounding the Uchiha’s massacre, and if he did he hoped the memory of a hateful older brother would cause him to not believe it. Itachi’s constant pursuit of peace, coupled with the paramount secrecy of his missions and his capacity to care about those around him, led Itachi to take on every burden himself, believing he needed no help from comrades.[48]
After he died and was reincarnated, Itachi discovered that his plans largely failed; Sasuke is not a hero, he did find out the truth about what Itachi did, and now he aimed to destroy Konoha for its role in Itachi and the Uchiha clan’s suffering. He then began to see the flaw in his original plans: he had been trying to manipulate Sasuke rather than be honest with him and trust in his own strength.[49] Acknowledging the mistakes, Itachi was free to be himself instead of the persona he fabricated, being openly kind to others and displaying a dry sense of humour even in stressful situations.[50] He put his trust in Naruto Uzumaki to stop Sasuke from proceeding further down the path of darkness, and after Naruto proclaimed that he will stop the war himself, warned Naruto against forgetting the value of his friends like he himself and «Madara» did, reminding him how those he loved helped him come so far. Itachi later even showed empathy to his enemy Kabuto Yakushi, likening Kabuto’s arrogance and belief in nothing being beyond him to Itachi’s own living self, telling him that such a path can only lead to failure, at the same time seeing finally acknowledging his true self for who he is and forgiving himself for his mistakes. Itachi further displayed a reflective side, refusing Sasuke’s claims that he was perfect and telling him that perfection can never be obtained by one individual. Itachi came to believe sometimes two people of completely opposite personalities are two sides of the same coin; that when they learn to work together, they can succeed in things they are unable to accomplish alone, a possible reference to how he and Kisame were complete opposites but were capable of compensating for each other’s weaknesses. He was also finally open and honest with Sasuke during their final meeting, admitting what he did and even sharing information Sasuke did not already know. He apologised to Sasuke for failing in his responsibilities as an older brother, wondering if being up front with Sasuke from the beginning might have allowed them to avoid the Uchiha’s destruction. In their final moments together, Itachi told Sasuke he did not need forgiveness and that he will always love him no matter what.[51]

Itachi was a fairly tall man of fair complexion. He had black eyes, under which were long, pronounced tear-troughs. He had jet-black hair that was pulled back in a low ponytail and his face was framed with centre-parted bangs that extended to his chin; the ponytail and bangs grew longer over the years. His overall appearance was very similar to Sasuke’s.[52][53] Even more, like his brother, he was considered very handsome as many girls became infatuated with him.[9] When he lived in Konoha, his casual clothes consisted of a black shirt with the Uchiha clan symbol on the back, bandages around his ankles, and black sandals. He wore tan pants with a weapons pouch strapped to his back. When on duty, he would wear the standard Anbu uniform complete with arm guards, a flak jacket, and a porcelain mask which was fashioned to resemble a weasel with a red, triangular marking on top.[54]
As a member of Akatsuki, he wore the standard Akatsuki cloak and a slashed Konoha forehead protector to symbolise his broken ties with the village. The cloak’s high collar would obscure his ponytail. He would sometimes unbutton his cloak to mid-chest and rest his left arm there, rather than in the sleeve. Under his cloak he wore clothes similar to the rest of Akatsuki: mesh armour with navy accents under an identical T-shirt with a simple white belt around the waist and dark blue pants. On his right ring finger was his Akatsuki ring, which was red and bore the kanji for «vermilion» (朱, shu). He wore light blue nail polish on his fingers and toes and a necklace that had three silver rings with red gems inside them.
After being reincarnated by Kabuto with the Impure World Reincarnation technique, he was seen wearing a maroon long sleeved cloak like the other reincarnated ninjas and retained his dark blue pants and black open-toed sandals. His skin became pale white with linings on his face, his hair became dark grey and had soulless onyx eyes minus the irides.
Abilities

Even within the famed and battle-adept Uchiha clan, Itachi was a genius of such talent, never before seen in the history of the academy.[55] Well-known for consistently showing prowess far beyond his years, he quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the strongest shinobi Konoha ever produced. Itachi had the fastest time for completing the Forest of Death in his Chūnin Exams, in 5 hours and 37 minutes, while 9 years old and competing solo.[16] Despite his still young age, he was highly proficient in all three main ninja skill sets, effortlessly learning new techniques from simple observation, and gained praise from allies and foes alike; Orochimaru, one of the Sannin, openly admitted Itachi was stronger than him,[56] and Shisui, well-regarded as the strongest Uchiha of their time, viewed Itachi as stronger.[57] Despite being weakened from illness, while Sasuke had trained under and absorbed Orochimaru’s power, Itachi could have killed Sasuke during their final battle if he wanted to.[58] Even when restraining himself, Itachi still pushed a 3-man team of elite jōnin to their limits.[23]
Chakra and Physical Prowess

As an Uchiha, his chakra was naturally strong. Even from his youth, Itachi showed very advanced chakra control, able to channel chakra to enhance his strikes, even shattering a boulder large enough to crush several people.[59] However, his actual reserves were affected by his terminal illness. During the Uchiha Massacre, Itachi was able to use his Mangekyō Sharingan five times without suffering much exhaustion.[60] In the years following, just three uses of his Mangekyō Sharingan in a single day rendered him unable to use the Sharingan, and then require significant rest to regain his strength. This also prevented him from participating in prolonged battles.
Itachi was very skilled with taijutsu, easily defeating three members of the Konoha Military Police Force at the age of 11.[61] He had exceptional speed and reflexes, able to compete with Shisui and Naruto while clad with the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, two shinobi well-famed for their speed. His quickness was particularly noted with his hand movements, able to make hand seals too fast to be perceived normally; even skilled Sharingan-users had difficulty following him.[62] Similar to Shisui, his usage of the Body Flicker Technique could move great distances in an instant as if by displacing himself, giving his opponent little chance to react or initiate a counter-attack.[63] Itachi also had remarkable fortitude. Despite spending years afflicted with a crippling disease, he was able to maintain his composure at all times and still battle at near-perfect form.
Ninjutsu

Itachi could summon crows, which he would typically call forth in flocks to swarm opponents and distract them. He even integrated crows into clones of himself to draw opponents’ attention. He likewise could create shadow clones and from which detonate them for large explosions. Itachi was also well-versed in fūinjutsu, able to particularly those that would activate in the presence of a specific person’s Sharingan.[64][65] From his time in Anbu, Itachi became proficient in stealth, infiltration, and assassination.[5]
Bukijutsu
As a fully-trained Konoha Anbu, Itachi was skilled with a sword, which was his primary weapon during the Uchiha Clan Downfall. Like many Uchiha, he specialised in shurikenjutsu, which he was especially advanced at. Even as a child, Itachi could perfectly hit an intricate set of eight targets, one of which was hidden in a blind spot, by accurately deflecting his projectile off another one to redirect both projectiles’ path in mid-air.[66] His throwing speed was imperceptible, enough to negate the advantages of the Summoning: Lightning Flash Blade Creation.[67] He was equally comfortable with kunai, able to use them to spar with opponents wielding swords. In the anime, he learned advanced sleight-of-hand from Shisui to give his opponents even less time to react.[9]
Nature Transformation

Itachi’s nature transformations included Fire, Water, Wind, Yin, and Yang Release.[4] As an Uchiha, he had a natural affinity for Fire Release, mastering the clan’s Great Fireball Technique at a very young age. He could coat shuriken with fire to increase their offensive capacities.[68] With Water Release, Itachi could perform the Water Dragon Bullet Technique without an external water source,[69] as well as shape existing water into tendrils to strike his opponents from all directions.[70]
Genjutsu

Having pacifist ideals, Itachi specialised in genjutsu, which often involved crows. Itachi could use genjutsu to share information or psychologically disable opponents, letting him end the fight instantly. Regarded as one of Konohagakure’s best users, rivalling Shisui himself, as even without the aid of his Sharingan, his illusions had remarkable potency and were able to seamlessly affect his targets without them realising it — despite the target being on guard. He could also perform them by merely pointing at his target. Ao noted that Itachi had such a high aptitude with long-range genjutsu that he could control multiple individuals outside the range of an entire Sensor Division.[71]
Dōjutsu

Itachi awakened the Sharingan at age 8,[72] after witnessing his team-mate Tenma Izumo’s death, and soon after mastered it. From a young age, he demonstrated skill and power superior to most members of his clan.[73] In the anime, his prowess and exploits with it earned him great fame as «Itachi of the Sharingan» (写輪眼のイタチ, Sharingan no Itachi).[5] He tended to keep his Sharingan active near-constantly with minimal drain on his chakra levels. The Sharingan allowed Itachi to see the flow of chakra, predict movements, as well as facilitate his use of genjutsu. Against other genjutsu users, he could turn their genjutsu against them.[74] Also with the Sharingan, he could perform Izanami, a counterpart to the more dangerous Izanagi.[75]

Itachi awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan after witnessing Shisui’s suicide. Its design was three spiralling curves around the pupil. With his right eye he could use Amaterasu, igniting whatever he looked at with black flames that would burn anything, including fire itself, and at will extinguish Amaterasu.[76] With either eye, he could use Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that trapped opponents’ minds in an illusory world of his own design — capable of altering their perception of matter, space, gravity, and even time.[77][78][79] Itachi could cast sophisticated and elaborate illusions, forcing the target to experience an entire lifetime in an instant. Likewise, while genjutsu normally cannot kill, Tsukuyomi could cause enough mental damage to kill the victim, should Itachi provide enough chakra.[80] Even survivors have shown to be hospitalized for extended periods of time.

Having awakened the Mangekyō in both his eyes, Itachi could also use Susanoo. With its simplest manifestations, he could produce extra arms or bones to improve his options in a fight. When used in full, Itachi was surrounded by a spectral warrior that would protect him from damage.[81] In addition to the chakra swords and Yasaka Magatama common to all Susanoo, Itachi’s Susanoo wielded the Sword of Totsuka – an ethereal sword with the ability to seal any person it pierced into its gourd—hilt – and the Yata Mirror – a shield that was said to reflect any attack by changing its chakra nature to counterbalance an attack. The simultaneous use of both weapons made Itachi’s Susanoo essentially invincible.[82]
Using any of these techniques required large amounts of chakra, as used too often would deactivate his Sharingan altogether. The longer Itachi used his Mangekyō Sharingan, the more his eyesight deteriorated. Early uses of the Mangekyō would only cause his eyes to bleed, but by the end of his life he reached the point where he was nearly blind, only able to see mere blurs.[83] He did not suffer these shortcomings after his reincarnation and could use all his Mangekyō techniques as often as he desired unhindered.
Intelligence
As a precaution, Itachi programmed Sasuke’s Sharingan to react to Tobi’s.
Itachi was a highly intelligent individual, having the second highest scores in the history of the Chūnin Exams written test behind Minato Namikaze.[16] Composed and observant; he thought very quickly and remained calm in a fight, enabling him to respond with maximum efficiency and with the smallest likelihood of misjudging circumstances. Even at a young age, he was always calculating and methodical in his approach to the situation at hand, leaving little room for error. He took several precautions for Sasuke and against Tobi that he planned would activate after his death. Even Tobi admitted if he didn’t keep some secrets from Itachi, he would have been killed by Itachi’s trap.[84] During his infiltration of Konoha, Itachi was also able to subtly leak Akatsuki’s goals to Kakashi, Kurenai, Asuma, and Jiraiya without arousing Kisame’s suspicions.

Part I
Search for Tsunade

Itachi and Kisame sneak into Konoha.
After the Konoha Crush and the death of the Third Hokage, Itachi and Kisame use Itachi’s prior experience as an Anbu to infiltrate the village undetected.[85] They are nevertheless noticed by Kakashi Hatake, who sends Asuma Sarutobi and Kurenai Yūhi after them to determine their identities and purpose. Itachi and Kisame lead them to an isolated location and reveal themselves. Asuma and Kurenai engage them but pose little challenge and it is only due to the timely arrival of Kakashi that they are saved. Itachi and Kakashi duel with their Sharingan but Itachi quickly proves to be the superior and uses Tsukuyomi to render Kakashi helpless, but is surprised that Kakashi not only remains standing afterwards but that he knows they and Akatsuki are seeking the Nine-Tails. Itachi instructs Kisame to capture Kakashi to find out what else he knows and kill the others, but Kisame is parried by Might Guy. With things escalating, Itachi and Kisame decide to withdraw.

After confirming Sasuke’s safety, Itachi pretended to pursue Naruto to covertly let Konoha know about Akatsuki’s goals. Itachi and Kisame track the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki, Naruto Uzumaki, to Shukuba Town. Because Naruto is under the protection of Jiraiya, Itachi uses a genjutsu on an attractive woman to draw Jiraiya away. They confront Naruto and contemplate how to apprehend him. Before they can make a decision they are interrupted by Sasuke, who heard about Itachi’s return and attacks him with Chidori. Itachi easily deflects it and then breaks Sasuke’s wrist, but Jiraiya returns before things can go further. Not wishing to get drawn into a fight with Jiraiya but confronted by his younger brother’s overwhelming desire for revenge, Itachi effortlessly overpowers Sasuke, taunts Sasuke’s weakness, incapacitates him with Tsukuyomi, and then makes to escape. Jiraiya attempts to stop them with Summoning: Toad Mouth Bind, but Itachi uses Amaterasu so he and Kisame can break through.
Despite his seeming intentions to capture Naruto, Itachi’s only real reasons for returning to Konoha were to, in the wake of the Third’s death, remind Danzō Shimura and the rest of the Konoha Council that he was still out there and that they should not do anything to harm Sasuke.
Sasuke Recovery Mission

Part II
Kazekage Rescue Mission

Itachi and Kakashi clash.
While sealing the One-Tail, Akatsuki learns that Konoha ninja are converging on their location. Just as Kisame volunteers to delay Team Guy, Itachi volunteers to delay Team 7. Nagato uses his Shapeshifting Technique to make a body-double of Itachi that he controls remotely, which he uses to intercept Team 7. Team 7 coordinates against him and Itachi is impressed by Naruto’s growth, but he still manages to catch him in a genjutsu. He torments Naruto for his failures to protect his friends, specifically Sasuke, until the genjutsu is broken by Naruto’s teammates. Itachi, his body-double not having his full power, is eventually defeated by Naruto’s Big Ball Rasengan. He nevertheless succeeds in buying enough time to complete the One-Tail’s sealing.
Itachi Pursuit Mission

After Kisame captures the Four-Tails, Akatsuki convenes to seal it. Before the sealing gets underway they are informed that Sasuke has killed Orochimaru after two-and-a-half years of training with him and is now coming after Itachi. Deidara and Tobi go after Sasuke following the Four-Tails’ sealing, and Akatsuki later receives reports that all three have been killed. Kisame consoles Itachi afterwards for now being the last Uchiha, but he replies that Sasuke is still alive. Even had he died, he says there is still another Uchiha, alluding to Tobi’s survival as well.
Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant

Knowing that his end is near, Itachi sends a shadow clone to find and meet with Naruto. When Naruto attacks him, Itachi insists he only wants to talk. He asks Naruto what Sasuke means to him and what he will do if ever Sasuke moves against Konoha. Naruto replies that he is Sasuke’s brother – a better brother than Itachi is – and that if Sasuke ever attacks the village he will defend it without killing Sasuke. Itachi is happy with this answer and gives Naruto some assistance for this purpose: a special crow that he stores within Naruto’s body. (He does not tell Naruto the crow’s purpose, but the crow, implanted with Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan, will react to seeing Itachi’s eyes and compel whoever has the eyes to protect Konoha. Since he expects Sasuke will take his eyes at some point if he awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and by extension learned the truth, the plan is for the crow to reestablish Sasuke’s loyalties to the village after Itachi is dead.) Having business elsewhere, the shadow clone disperses.
Another shadow clone allows Sasuke to track him to one of Akatsuki’s lairs. Sasuke attacks him, displaying the new abilities he’s learned, and in doing so convinces Itachi that he has gotten strong enough. The shadow clone arranges to meet with Sasuke at the Uchiha Hideout before it disappears. While Itachi waits for Sasuke, he has Kisame patrol the hideout’s perimeter and permit nobody but Sasuke to enter.
Fated Battle Between Brothers

When Sasuke arrives they start by trading genjutsu. At Sasuke’s request Itachi tells him about Tobi, who also goes by Madara, as well as the mysteries of the Mangekyō Sharingan and the even more powerful Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Itachi expresses his disappointment that Sasuke has not gained his own Mangekyō, but says he can use Sasuke’s eyes to gain an Eternal Mangekyō all the same. The genjutsu exchange ends when Sasuke breaks free of Itachi’s Tsukuyomi, thus beginning the real fight. The volleys of ninjutsu quickly spill outside, where Sasuke and Itachi compare their Great Fireballs. When Sasuke’s starts to pull ahead, Itachi uses Amaterasu. While trying to hit Sasuke he ends up igniting the surrounding forest, but does finally manage to catch Sasuke. Sasuke sheds his skin to escape the flames and performs multiple Fire Release: Great Dragon Fire Techniques while Itachi is off-guard. Itachi avoids them, but Sasuke informs him that Itachi wasn’t his target.

After Sasuke’s attack, storm clouds gather and lightning brews, allowing Sasuke to attack Itachi with Kirin. Although the hideout is destroyed, Itachi survives thanks to his Susanoo. With his Susanoo active, Itachi approaches Sasuke. Having used all his chakra to perform Kirin, Sasuke activates his Cursed Seal of Heaven and out of desperation to defeat Itachi unleashes Orochimaru. Orochimaru springs from Sasuke’s body using the Eight Branches Technique and states his intentions to take finally take Sasuke’s body for his own. Itachi, having prolonged the battle in order to draw Orochimaru out, pierces him with Susanoo’s Sword of Totsuka, sealing Orochimaru away and removing Sasuke’s cursed seal.
Itachi smiles to Sasuke before dying.
Itachi resumes his approach, telling Sasuke his resolution to now take his eyes, and Sasuke makes futile attempts to keep him away. Susanoo continues to protect Itachi, but it degrades as he labours near and Itachi starts coughing up blood. Itachi began approaching Sasuke, claiming he wanted Sasuke’s eyes. When he finally reaches Sasuke, Itachi appears to grab for his eyes but instead only pokes his forehead. (The poke seals Amaterasu in Sasuke’s eyes, set to activate against Tobi’s Sharingan in order to protect Sasuke from him.) In a similar manner to how he described death to Kisame, Itachi died unable to maintain his disguise of wanting Sasuke’s eyes, he genuinely smiles to Sasuke and apologises to Sasuke and says this is the end before succumbing to his disease and falling dead with a smile on his face.

In the anime, Kabuto Yakushi reincarnates Itachi to be used against Team 7. The summon fails almost immediately afterwards, causing Kabuto to wonder if the Impure World Reincarnation was still incomplete.[86]
Fourth Shinobi World War: Countdown

When the Fourth Shinobi World War looms, Kabuto approaches Tobi – who survived the implanted Amaterasu – offering to join forces. To that end he reincarnates Itachi and four other dead members of Akatsuki as offerings for Tobi’s war plans.

When the Fourth Shinobi World War begins, Itachi is mobilised with the rest of Kabuto’s collection of reincarnated ninja. Itachi is paired with Nagato, who he carries because of Nagato’s damaged legs. They discuss Akatsuki and how little they, particularly Nagato, actually knew about the organisation; both were only pawns kept by Tobi because of their dōjutsu, and now they’ve been revived so Kabuto can use them for the same reason.
Itachi and Nagato are found by Naruto and Killer B. Itachi learns several things as Kabuto forces him to fight them: Naruto’s Nine-Tails Chakra Mode indicates he’s finally gained control of the Nine-Tails; B’s use of Samehada is proof Kisame is dead; Naruto tells him that Sasuke now works with Akatsuki to destroy Konoha due to having been told the truth of the Uchiha Clan Downfall by Tobi, much to Itachi’s horror and dismay. Itachi and Nagato continue attacking but give advice to Naruto and B about how to evade them. When he has an opening, Itachi calls out the crow he planted in Naruto before his death and allows it to use its genjutsu on him, overriding Kabuto’s control with its pre-programmed mission to protect Konoha.

Now free to do as he wishes, Itachi joins Naruto and B against Nagato, using Amaterasu on him and his summons. Itachi continues to eliminate Nagato’s summons and also saves B and Naruto from being killed by Nagato himself. Nagato uses Chibaku Tensei to try and restrain them, but the three join forces to destroy it. Itachi stabs Nagato with the Sword of Totsuka before the dust settles, sealing him away and ending the battle. Itachi then decides to personally take care of Kabuto in order to end the Impure World Reincarnation. Before leaving, he destroys the crow and Shisui’s eye with Amaterasu so it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands and entrusts Sasuke’s reform to Naruto.
Fourth Shinobi World War: Climax

Itachi and Sasuke join forces.
Nagato had been able to locate Kabuto’s location while they were together, and Itachi now moves on a direct course there. He inadvertently crosses paths with Sasuke along the way. Feeling he is unworthy of Sasuke, Itachi tries to avoid him and his questions. When Sasuke persists, Itachi admits that he made a mistake manipulating Sasuke along a path that he wanted, which has put Sasuke in a worse position than he ever intended. As they near Kabuto’s lair Itachi tries one last time to shake him, only to be disappointed when Sasuke joins him shortly after he confronts Kabuto. Sasuke moves to kill Kabuto, but is blocked by Itachi, who explains that Kabuto must be kept alive if the Impure World Reincarnation is to be broken. Sasuke offers to help on the condition that Itachi will finally talk to him afterwards. Itachi agrees.

Kabuto obscures his vision to prevent being caught in a genjutsu and attacks. Itachi and Sasuke block with their Susanoo, only to find that they have lost track of Kabuto. Itachi realises that Kabuto has achieved Sage Mode and quickly defends Sasuke before he can come to harm in Kabuto’s sneak attack. Itachi reminds Sasuke of a mission they went on as children to hunt a boar, which they reenact with their Susanoo against Kabuto. Kabuto avoids them and commandeers Sasuke’s sword, which he uses to attack Itachi. Itachi takes the sword back from him and uses it to cut off the tip of one of Kabuto’s horns.
Kabuto tries to turn Sasuke against Itachi, pointing out all the lies and distrust Itachi has been showing Sasuke for years. Itachi admits his faults, but promises to tell Sasuke something after he’s performed his Izanami. Kabuto is confident that he cannot be defeated since they can’t kill him and because of the precautions he’s taken to avoid genjutsu. He manipulates the cave to confine them and uses DNA to perform a variety of other ninja’s long-range jutsu, trying to create an opportunity to access Itachi’s head and regain control of him. Sasuke becomes increasingly earnest to kill Kabuto, but Itachi pleads for him to wait until Izanami is ready.
Under Itachi’s control, Kabuto releases the Impure World Reincarnation.
While Itachi and Sasuke deal with Kabuto’s recreation of Orochimaru, Kabuto bisects Itachi. Itachi’s reincarnated body regenerates and he uses Sasuke’s sword to cut off even more of the same horn as before. This creates a sensory loop independent of vision that traps Kabuto in eternal battle; that is Izanami. Kabuto has the chance of escaping Izanami by accepting the fate he now tries to fight by taking on others’ powers, Itachi’s gift to him because of their perceived similarities. He raises the brille that cover Kabuto’s eyes and uses a genjutsu to make Kabuto perform the hand seals that will end the Impure World Reincarnation.
Itachi imparts his final words to his brother.
While Kabuto performs the hand seals, Sasuke tells Itachi that he won’t forgive Konoha for coercing Itachi the way that he was and that he will continue to conspire against the villages despite Itachi’s wishes. Itachi listens without response. When he is engulfed in light and the Impure World Reincarnation begins to break, he faces Sasuke and admits to everything Sasuke has been told about him, even imparting some of his own memories to Sasuke to fully dispel the lies he’s told. He reaches for Sasuke, seemingly meaning to poke his forehead again, but instead gives Sasuke a head bump, symbolising he no longer saw Sasuke as a child, but an equal. He tells Sasuke that he wants no forgiveness and promises that he will love Sasuke no matter what he decides to do. His reincarnated body dissolves and his soul returns to the afterlife.
Legacy
By his own design, Itachi had a profound influence on Sasuke’s life. His instructions on the night of the Uchiha Clan Downfall for Sasuke to gain the power necessary to defeat him caused Sasuke to isolate himself from other people and avoid companionship. When Sasuke realised that he was getting attached to the members of Team 7 and, from his perspective, failing to get stronger because of them, he defected from Konoha and left to train under Orochimaru — propelling him along the path towards Itachi’s death. Following the brothers’ battle, Itachi’s plans started to fail due to the interference of Tobi, who refocuses Sasuke’s hatred that Itachi had engineered for himself, to be used against Konoha, turning Sasuke into a criminal against Itachi’s intentions. Itachi is able to make amends with Sasuke upon his reincarnation, using his Sharingan to convey his memories to his little brother so that he could understand why Itachi chose the path he did. He also wiped Sasuke’s prejudices clean and encouraged him to start deciding things for himself.
Itachi’s eyes would prove to be of immense importance for Sasuke, as not only did it grant Sasuke the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, but Sasuke would later awaken the Rinnegan with one of Itachi’s eyes.
Upon learning the entire truth about Itachi, Sasuke regains the great admiration he had for him when they were children and follows in his brother’s footsteps. He does not want to see Konoha, the village Itachi sacrificed so much for, destroyed and therefore works against Tobi and Madara to end the Fourth Shinobi World War.[87] He also sees the reason in Itachi’s decision to make difficult choices and be hated for them, and for that reason gives himself the task after the war is concluded to become the world’s darkness, using his power to force peace and unapologetically kill any that threaten it. Though this is again a great divergence from Itachi’s plans, another of Itachi’s plans redeems him: Naruto, at Itachi’s insistence, eventually convinces Sasuke of the errors he has made without killing him after their final battle. In the war’s aftermath, Sasuke adopts Itachi’s habit of poking others’ foreheads as a sign of affection, in particular his wife, Sakura Haruno, and their daughter, Sarada. He also had a habit of neglecting his daughter in favour of his duties of protecting the village and her, although he realises this mistake later on and chose to spend time with his family before continuing his mission. Sasuke would continue to protect the village for many years to come — ultimately causing Itachi’s wishes for his brother to finally be realised.
In the years following the World War, Naruto attempted to restore some of Itachi’s honour by telling the world of Itachi’s actions during his period of reincarnation. Without mentioning the truth about the «crimes» he committed while alive, Naruto gave Itachi’s name as someone who supported him. Though not an easy thing to accept, no one challenged Naruto’s word on the matter.[88]
Itachi’s influence also extended beyond Sasuke: Danzō Shimura, despite his difference of opinions with Itachi, believed him an unsung hero of Konoha who worked selflessly for the village’s good; Naruto is reminded by Itachi that the Hokage’s strength comes from their acknowledgement by others, and thus he must never forget those who helped him become strong; the five Kage, despite not knowing about Itachi’s involvement, hailed him as the world’s saviour for dispelling the Impure World Reincarnation technique;[89] Kabuto Yakushi remembered who he truly was as a result of Itachi’s Izanami and, inspired by him, resuscitated Sasuke when he was on the verge of death.
In the anime, Hiruzen realised kind-hearted people should never be in the Anbu because of the nature of their missions. After the Uchiha Clan Downfall, Hiruzen was determined not to do the same with Kakashi and chose to retire him as an Anbu and made him commander of a team of genin in hopes it would help restore his light and kindness and eliminate his darkness.
Itachi had an influence on one of Orochimaru’s experiment subjects, Shin. Shin became intrigued by the Uchiha clan, especially Itachi, and adopted the clan name and customary garb for himself. It was because of his fascination of Itachi that Shin held a grudge against Sasuke for causing his older brother to die, and attempted to kill him in revenge. However, Sasuke noted that Shin’s social darwinism and warmongering goals indicate he did not understand Itachi at all.

Sunny Side Battle!

Itachi Uchiha heads downstairs into the kitchen of his former house at the Uchiha Compound in Konohagakure and proceeds to put on his Akatsuki outfit, along with an Akatsuki-themed apron. After putting a tea kettle to boil and setting bread in a toaster, he grabs a carton of eggs from the fridge and attempts to cook one sunny-side up, only to find his first attempt foiled by an errant piece of eggshell on the egg. Further attempts yield the same results, with various things going wrong with the eggs, such as the yolk breaking, Itachi’s sweat getting onto the eggs, and so on. Itachi even resorts to making a plate of scrambled eggs, although after a moment of thought he dismisses the idea and starts again.

Creation and Conception

In Jin no Sho, Kishimoto revealed that Itachi was originally conceived (before the series began) as the leader of Konoha’s Special Assassination and Tactical Squad, dubbed the Itachi Squad (イタチ隊, Itachi-tai), which would have been a 70-man group divided into four teams, specialising in assassination and other illicit operations. In Kishimoto’s original rough sketch, Itachi wore a bandana-style forehead protector, a skin-tight t-shirt, gloves, a coat tied around his waist, and had several scars including an x-shaped scar on his chin. Elements of this concept were later incorporated into Danzō Shimura and the Anbu.
Trivia
- The name «Itachi» means «weasel» (鼬), while his family name «Uchiha» is another way of pronouncing «uchiwa» (団扇, paper fan), which is actually the Uchiha clan’s symbol. Uchiwa can be used to fan flames, making the flame hotter — referring to the fact that the Uchiha is a clan of Fire Release users.
- Itachi consistently ranks highly in the Shōnen Jump popularity polls for the series, his highest to-date position being fifth most popular character.
- Itachi and Kisame made a brief cameo appearance in the Hidden Leaf Village Grand Sports Festival!, where they were standing in line to use the bathroom, along with many other random characters.
- Itachi’s nickname «…of the Sharingan» (写輪眼の…, Sharingan no…) is also held by Kakashi Hatake and Sasuke Uchiha.
- Studio Pierrot’s Settei sheets of Itachi show that he was 125 cm as an Academy student, 130 cm as a genin, 148 cm when he became an Anbu, and 170 cm around the time of the Uchiha Clan Downfall.

Itachi Uchiha (うちは イタチ, Uchiha Itachi) is a character in the Naruto manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. Itachi is the older brother of Sasuke Uchiha, and is responsible for killing all the members of their clan, sparing only Sasuke. He appears working as a terrorist from the organisation Akatsuki and serves as Sasuke’s greatest enemy. During the second part of the manga, Itachi becomes involved in attacks to ninjas possessing tailed-beast creatures until facing Sasuke in a one-on-one battle. Although Itachi perishes during the final duel, it is later revealed that Itachi had a secret reason for assassinating the Uchiha clan. Itachi is a playable character in most of the video games from the series.
Itachi’s character has been popular with readers of the manga,[6] and has been positively received by critics. His appearance as an antagonist has been praised by several writers, although some have considered his initial appearance to be unsurprising. The gradual revelations of his past and its impact on the story has also received positive reception,[7][8] and his fights were noted to be «one of the best» in the series.[9][10][11] Numerous types of merchandise have been released in Itachi’s likeness, including keychains, plush dolls and figurines.
Creation and design[edit]
When Itachi Uchiha is first mentioned by Sasuke Uchiha in the manga, Masashi Kishimoto had not planned out the character’s backstory. The only idea he had was to attribute to Itachi some violent action that would have Sasuke wanting to kill him. However, when Itachi was introduced, Kishimoto had the idea to make Itachi Konoha’s secret agent who killed his clan under their orders.[12] Itachi was originally conceived as the leader of Konoha’s Special Assassination and Tactical Squad called the «Anbu», dubbed the Itachi Squad (イタチ隊, Itachi-tai), which would have been a 70-man group divided into four teams, specializing in assassination and other illicit operations. However, this idea was scrapped in favor of the current Itachi working for the Akatsuki.[13] From all the Akatsuki characters Kishimoto designed, Itachi is his favorite based on his backstory.[14]
Itachi’s Japanese voice actor, Hideo Ishikawa, often talked with Sasuke’s Japanese actor, Noriaki Sugiyama, about their characters. When the two characters first confronted, both Ishikawa and Sugiyama found Itachi’s massacre of the Uchiha clan hard to believe and started to read the Naruto manga in order to see if Itachi was hiding something. After Itachi’s death, the two actors noted that in the end Itachi served as a good older brother to Sasuke.[15] English actor Crispin Freeman was pleased with voicing Itachi regardless of how many times he revisited the series.[16]

Itachi is a member of the Uchiha Clan from the village of Konohagakure and the elder brother of Sasuke Uchiha. He grew up as the child prodigy of the Uchiha clan, establishing milestones for not only Sasuke, but also for future Uchiha to live up to.[17] His early childhood was marred by war, the violence of which caused him to seek peace at any cost. Upon learning that his clan was planning a coup d’état to take control of Konoha, after his clan was accused of attacking the village with the Nine Tails, Itachi provides Konoha with intelligence on his clan’s actions during his two years as a member of the ANBU. Over time, Itachi distances himself from his clan, as some clan members believed he murdered his best friend, Shisui Uchiha, to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, Mangekyo Sharingan, lit. «Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye»).[18][19][20]
In reality, as Shisui possesses the ability to subliminally manipulate others and shares Itachi’s love for the village, he intended to use his gift on the Uchiha clan leader to stop the coup d’état. However, Shisui is mortally wounded by the Leaf High Council member Danzo Shimura, who then takes his eye to achieve his own ideal of peace. When Shisui entrusts Itachi with his remaining eye, Itachi covers up Shisui’s death to make it appear it was his doing. Eventually, in return for Danzo’s offer to spare his younger brother, Itachi slaughters his entire clan.[21] After creating the misconception that he murdered their family in cold blood to give Sasuke the mindset to become strong enough to kill him once he is capable, Itachi leaves the village, although he warns Danzo not to harm Sasuke. Meeting up with Konoha’s Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi, who promises to do what he can to look after Sasuke, Itachi reveals his intentions to continue to protect the village from the shadows.[22] Soon after perceiving them as a threat to Konoha, Itachi joins the Akatsuki to ensure they do not endanger his village. Itachi becomes good friends with his partner Kisame Hoshigaki, who expresses concern for Itachi’s wellbeing.[23]
Itachi debuts in Part I after Hiruzen’s death, when he uses his infiltration of Konoha to hunt down Naruto Uzumaki as an excuse to secretly check on Sasuke’s wellbeing.[24] After engaging with Kakashi Hatake and some of Konoha’s forces, he reveals Akatsuki’s goal to gather the Jinchuriki which are the people that contained the tailed beasts which there are nine of. Itachi also learns that Naruto is under the protection of Jiraiya and sets up a trap to lure the experienced ninja away to grab the boy.[23][25] However, as Jiraiya comes to Naruto’s aid, Itachi finds himself facing Sasuke and directs his brother back on the path of getting stronger by defeating him before he and Kisame fall back.[26][27]
In Part II, Itachi uses one of Sasori’s informants as a clone of himself to hold off Naruto and the rest of his team while he and the others seal away Shukaku the One Tail.[28] Itachi remains on the sidelines until learning that Sasuke has finally severed his ties to Orochimaru, having absorbed him and now being strong enough to settle matters. Prior to his fight with Sasuke, Itachi meets with Naruto and, after questioning his intentions to save Sasuke, ensures the youth’s safety with a crow with Shisui’s Sharingan (写輪眼, lit. «Copy Wheel Eye», English manga: «Mirror Wheel Eye») as a countermeasure against Sasuke if he gains his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and attempts to attack Konoha.[29] Sasuke ultimately tracks him down and they engage in their final battle, during the course of which he uses his Mangekyo Sharingan to push Sasuke to his limits. In doing so, Orochimaru is drawn out from Sasuke’s body, and Itachi seals him away with his Totsuka blade before finally succumbing to his mysterious illness.[30] As his final act, Itachi implants his Amaterasu technique within Sasuke, meant as a protective measure that will kill Tobi in case he ever tries to approach Sasuke and reveal the truth of their clan’s slaughter.[31] Unfortunately, having known where Itachi’s loyalties truly lie, Tobi survived and reveals the truth of Itachi’s actions to Sasuke. This gives Sasuke the resolve to destroy the village in revenge for ruining his brother’s and his clan’s lives, eventually having his brother’s Mangekyo Sharingan implanted on him.[22]
Itachi reappears later during the Fourth Great Ninja War, brought back by Kabuto Yakushi using the Reanimation Jutsu, a forbidden summoning jutsu that brings the dead back as immortal corpses, to fight on Tobi’s side.[32] Paired with Nagato and forced to fight Naruto and Killer Bee against his will, Itachi learns of his brother’s intentions and summons the crow he gave Naruto to regain his free will.[33] After sealing Nagato,[33] Itachi heads out to stop Kabuto and encounters Sasuke, with his younger brother wanting to know the truth once it is over.[34][35]
After a long battle, Itachi is pushed to use Izanami to trap Kabuto in an eternal time-loop in his own mind, to have him break his jutsu.[36][37][38] His soul beginning to fade, Itachi uses his Sharingan to project his memories to Sasuke to reveal the full story of the events leading to the Uchiha Clan Massacre. Telling his brother that he does not have to forgive him, Itachi tells Sasuke that he will always love him, no matter what choice he makes from then on.[39] With his brother’s parting words, and accepting defeat after his final battle with Naruto, Sasuke renounces destroying the village and devotes himself to protecting it, fulfilling Itachi’s wish for his younger brother. Sasuke even adopts Itachi’s habit of poking on the forehead as a sign of affection, which Sasuke does with his wife Sakura and their daughter Sarada Uchiha.[40][41]
In other media[edit]
Itachi is present in the sixth Naruto: Shippuden movie, Road to Ninja, where he leads an alternate-universe Akatsuki to help Naruto. He has a brief cameo in one of the original video animations, and is a playable character in nearly all Naruto video games, including the Clash of Ninja series and the Ultimate Ninja series.[42][43][44][45][46][47] In some games, he utilizes variations of his techniques not seen in the anime or manga.[48] Several merchandise items based on Itachi have been released, including key chains,[49] plush dolls,[50][51] and figurines.[52][53]
Reception[edit]
Itachi has ranked high in the Weekly Shonen Jump popularity polls for the series, continuously placing in the top 10.[6] He was ranked in fifth position in the polls of 2011, his highest ranking to date.[54] The character received generally positive reviews from several publications for manga, anime, video games, and other related media. IGN reader Jason Van Horn characterized Itachi as «badass» and jokingly mentioned that he is a character to be afraid of since, in his first fight in the series, he does not make any remarkable move.[11] He found that «there is just something about the cold and numb Itachi,» that makes the viewer «want to breakout in chills».[9] IGN’s Charles White liked the episode where the relationship between young Sasuke and Itachi is revealed, and hoped to see more of their past to resolve the mystery of Itachi’s character commenting that learning about their «past has been intriguing».[7] NTT customers voted him as their tenth favorite black haired male anime character.[55] CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama referred to Itachi as one of his favorite characters from Naruto.[56]
In the Shelf Life section from Anime News Network (ANN) Bamboo Dong comments that Itachi is one of her favorite characters from the series, noting his background and his introduction as the best parts of the series.[57] Activeanime writer Davey C. Jones celebrated Itachi’s fights as the best ones in the series, noting his abilities to be as amazing as a «sci-fi ninja».[58] Holly Ellingwood from the same website agrees, citing his fight against Kakashi Hatake as one «few will be able to forget». The reviewer also praised Itachi’s attitude, commenting that he «is as cold and as ruthless as any villain yet».[10]
In a review of Volume 16 of the manga, Deb Aoki from About.com listed Itachi’s introduction in the series as one of the cons from the volume. She praised his first fight in the series as very entertaining, meant to «whet readers’ appetites for future fights between Konoha ninja and the Akatsuki».[59] James Musgrove commented that Itachi and his partner Kisame «make a dramatic and well-timed entrance into the story».[60] However, Jason Van Horn criticised the first battle between Itachi and Sasuke, as «good» but not «as epic as it should’ve been».[61] His last fight with Sasuke before dying was considered «epic» by Casey Brienza from ANN. She found it to be «a battle of minds» since, even after Itachi’s death, Sasuke changes his mind about him when he learns about his past. She also anticipated the impact of Itachi’s past revelations on the future storyline of Naruto.[8] Despite disliking how the anime Shippuden used Itachi’s light novel as part of the series, Chris Beveridge from the Fandom Post enjoyed Itachi’s impact on both Sasuke and Naruto.[62] Writer Jason Thompson highly praised his visual tortures, due to the effect it has on the victims, reminding him of the antagonist from Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s film Cure notable for its horror scenes. Nevertheless, he criticized Itachi’s death scene as a result of his disease rather than being killed by Sasuke, taking all the blame from his brother in the process.[63] In 2014, IGN listed him as the fifth best Naruto character when the series ended.[64]

Itachi Uchiha (うちは イタチ, Uchiha Itachi) is a character in the Naruto manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. Itachi is the older brother of Sasuke Uchiha, and is responsible for killing all the members of their clan, sparing only Sasuke. He appears working as a terrorist from the organisation Akatsuki and serves as Sasuke’s greatest enemy. During the second part of the manga, Itachi becomes involved in attacks to ninjas possessing tailed-beast creatures until facing Sasuke in a one-on-one battle. Although Itachi perishes during the final duel, it is later revealed that Itachi had a secret reason for assassinating the Uchiha clan. Itachi is a playable character in most of the video games from the series.
Itachi’s character has been popular with readers of the manga,[6] and has been positively received by critics. His appearance as an antagonist has been praised by several writers, although some have considered his initial appearance to be unsurprising. The gradual revelations of his past and its impact on the story has also received positive reception,[7][8] and his fights were noted to be «one of the best» in the series.[9][10][11] Numerous types of merchandise have been released in Itachi’s likeness, including keychains, plush dolls and figurines.
Creation and design[edit]
When Itachi Uchiha is first mentioned by Sasuke Uchiha in the manga, Masashi Kishimoto had not planned out the character’s backstory. The only idea he had was to attribute to Itachi some violent action that would have Sasuke wanting to kill him. However, when Itachi was introduced, Kishimoto had the idea to make Itachi Konoha’s secret agent who killed his clan under their orders.[12] Itachi was originally conceived as the leader of Konoha’s Special Assassination and Tactical Squad called the «Anbu», dubbed the Itachi Squad (イタチ隊, Itachi-tai), which would have been a 70-man group divided into four teams, specializing in assassination and other illicit operations. However, this idea was scrapped in favor of the current Itachi working for the Akatsuki.[13] From all the Akatsuki characters Kishimoto designed, Itachi is his favorite based on his backstory.[14]
Itachi’s Japanese voice actor, Hideo Ishikawa, often talked with Sasuke’s Japanese actor, Noriaki Sugiyama, about their characters. When the two characters first confronted, both Ishikawa and Sugiyama found Itachi’s massacre of the Uchiha clan hard to believe and started to read the Naruto manga in order to see if Itachi was hiding something. After Itachi’s death, the two actors noted that in the end Itachi served as a good older brother to Sasuke.[15] English actor Crispin Freeman was pleased with voicing Itachi regardless of how many times he revisited the series.[16]

Itachi is a member of the Uchiha Clan from the village of Konohagakure and the elder brother of Sasuke Uchiha. He grew up as the child prodigy of the Uchiha clan, establishing milestones for not only Sasuke, but also for future Uchiha to live up to.[17] His early childhood was marred by war, the violence of which caused him to seek peace at any cost. Upon learning that his clan was planning a coup d’état to take control of Konoha, after his clan was accused of attacking the village with the Nine Tails, Itachi provides Konoha with intelligence on his clan’s actions during his two years as a member of the ANBU. Over time, Itachi distances himself from his clan, as some clan members believed he murdered his best friend, Shisui Uchiha, to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, Mangekyo Sharingan, lit. «Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye»).[18][19][20]
In reality, as Shisui possesses the ability to subliminally manipulate others and shares Itachi’s love for the village, he intended to use his gift on the Uchiha clan leader to stop the coup d’état. However, Shisui is mortally wounded by the Leaf High Council member Danzo Shimura, who then takes his eye to achieve his own ideal of peace. When Shisui entrusts Itachi with his remaining eye, Itachi covers up Shisui’s death to make it appear it was his doing. Eventually, in return for Danzo’s offer to spare his younger brother, Itachi slaughters his entire clan.[21] After creating the misconception that he murdered their family in cold blood to give Sasuke the mindset to become strong enough to kill him once he is capable, Itachi leaves the village, although he warns Danzo not to harm Sasuke. Meeting up with Konoha’s Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi, who promises to do what he can to look after Sasuke, Itachi reveals his intentions to continue to protect the village from the shadows.[22] Soon after perceiving them as a threat to Konoha, Itachi joins the Akatsuki to ensure they do not endanger his village. Itachi becomes good friends with his partner Kisame Hoshigaki, who expresses concern for Itachi’s wellbeing.[23]
Itachi debuts in Part I after Hiruzen’s death, when he uses his infiltration of Konoha to hunt down Naruto Uzumaki as an excuse to secretly check on Sasuke’s wellbeing.[24] After engaging with Kakashi Hatake and some of Konoha’s forces, he reveals Akatsuki’s goal to gather the Jinchuriki which are the people that contained the tailed beasts which there are nine of. Itachi also learns that Naruto is under the protection of Jiraiya and sets up a trap to lure the experienced ninja away to grab the boy.[23][25] However, as Jiraiya comes to Naruto’s aid, Itachi finds himself facing Sasuke and directs his brother back on the path of getting stronger by defeating him before he and Kisame fall back.[26][27]
In Part II, Itachi uses one of Sasori’s informants as a clone of himself to hold off Naruto and the rest of his team while he and the others seal away Shukaku the One Tail.[28] Itachi remains on the sidelines until learning that Sasuke has finally severed his ties to Orochimaru, having absorbed him and now being strong enough to settle matters. Prior to his fight with Sasuke, Itachi meets with Naruto and, after questioning his intentions to save Sasuke, ensures the youth’s safety with a crow with Shisui’s Sharingan (写輪眼, lit. «Copy Wheel Eye», English manga: «Mirror Wheel Eye») as a countermeasure against Sasuke if he gains his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and attempts to attack Konoha.[29] Sasuke ultimately tracks him down and they engage in their final battle, during the course of which he uses his Mangekyo Sharingan to push Sasuke to his limits. In doing so, Orochimaru is drawn out from Sasuke’s body, and Itachi seals him away with his Totsuka blade before finally succumbing to his mysterious illness.[30] As his final act, Itachi implants his Amaterasu technique within Sasuke, meant as a protective measure that will kill Tobi in case he ever tries to approach Sasuke and reveal the truth of their clan’s slaughter.[31] Unfortunately, having known where Itachi’s loyalties truly lie, Tobi survived and reveals the truth of Itachi’s actions to Sasuke. This gives Sasuke the resolve to destroy the village in revenge for ruining his brother’s and his clan’s lives, eventually having his brother’s Mangekyo Sharingan implanted on him.[22]
Itachi reappears later during the Fourth Great Ninja War, brought back by Kabuto Yakushi using the Reanimation Jutsu, a forbidden summoning jutsu that brings the dead back as immortal corpses, to fight on Tobi’s side.[32] Paired with Nagato and forced to fight Naruto and Killer Bee against his will, Itachi learns of his brother’s intentions and summons the crow he gave Naruto to regain his free will.[33] After sealing Nagato,[33] Itachi heads out to stop Kabuto and encounters Sasuke, with his younger brother wanting to know the truth once it is over.[34][35]
After a long battle, Itachi is pushed to use Izanami to trap Kabuto in an eternal time-loop in his own mind, to have him break his jutsu.[36][37][38] His soul beginning to fade, Itachi uses his Sharingan to project his memories to Sasuke to reveal the full story of the events leading to the Uchiha Clan Massacre. Telling his brother that he does not have to forgive him, Itachi tells Sasuke that he will always love him, no matter what choice he makes from then on.[39] With his brother’s parting words, and accepting defeat after his final battle with Naruto, Sasuke renounces destroying the village and devotes himself to protecting it, fulfilling Itachi’s wish for his younger brother. Sasuke even adopts Itachi’s habit of poking on the forehead as a sign of affection, which Sasuke does with his wife Sakura and their daughter Sarada Uchiha.[40][41]
In other media[edit]
Itachi is present in the sixth Naruto: Shippuden movie, Road to Ninja, where he leads an alternate-universe Akatsuki to help Naruto. He has a brief cameo in one of the original video animations, and is a playable character in nearly all Naruto video games, including the Clash of Ninja series and the Ultimate Ninja series.[42][43][44][45][46][47] In some games, he utilizes variations of his techniques not seen in the anime or manga.[48] Several merchandise items based on Itachi have been released, including key chains,[49] plush dolls,[50][51] and figurines.[52][53]
Reception[edit]
Itachi has ranked high in the Weekly Shonen Jump popularity polls for the series, continuously placing in the top 10.[6] He was ranked in fifth position in the polls of 2011, his highest ranking to date.[54] The character received generally positive reviews from several publications for manga, anime, video games, and other related media. IGN reader Jason Van Horn characterized Itachi as «badass» and jokingly mentioned that he is a character to be afraid of since, in his first fight in the series, he does not make any remarkable move.[11] He found that «there is just something about the cold and numb Itachi,» that makes the viewer «want to breakout in chills».[9] IGN’s Charles White liked the episode where the relationship between young Sasuke and Itachi is revealed, and hoped to see more of their past to resolve the mystery of Itachi’s character commenting that learning about their «past has been intriguing».[7] NTT customers voted him as their tenth favorite black haired male anime character.[55] CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama referred to Itachi as one of his favorite characters from Naruto.[56]
In the Shelf Life section from Anime News Network (ANN) Bamboo Dong comments that Itachi is one of her favorite characters from the series, noting his background and his introduction as the best parts of the series.[57] Activeanime writer Davey C. Jones celebrated Itachi’s fights as the best ones in the series, noting his abilities to be as amazing as a «sci-fi ninja».[58] Holly Ellingwood from the same website agrees, citing his fight against Kakashi Hatake as one «few will be able to forget». The reviewer also praised Itachi’s attitude, commenting that he «is as cold and as ruthless as any villain yet».[10]
In a review of Volume 16 of the manga, Deb Aoki from About.com listed Itachi’s introduction in the series as one of the cons from the volume. She praised his first fight in the series as very entertaining, meant to «whet readers’ appetites for future fights between Konoha ninja and the Akatsuki».[59] James Musgrove commented that Itachi and his partner Kisame «make a dramatic and well-timed entrance into the story».[60] However, Jason Van Horn criticised the first battle between Itachi and Sasuke, as «good» but not «as epic as it should’ve been».[61] His last fight with Sasuke before dying was considered «epic» by Casey Brienza from ANN. She found it to be «a battle of minds» since, even after Itachi’s death, Sasuke changes his mind about him when he learns about his past. She also anticipated the impact of Itachi’s past revelations on the future storyline of Naruto.[8] Despite disliking how the anime Shippuden used Itachi’s light novel as part of the series, Chris Beveridge from the Fandom Post enjoyed Itachi’s impact on both Sasuke and Naruto.[62] Writer Jason Thompson highly praised his visual tortures, due to the effect it has on the victims, reminding him of the antagonist from Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s film Cure notable for its horror scenes. Nevertheless, he criticized Itachi’s death scene as a result of his disease rather than being killed by Sasuke, taking all the blame from his brother in the process.[63] In 2014, IGN listed him as the fifth best Naruto character when the series ended.[64]

At the age of 7, Itachi had graduated from the top of his class in nin-academy of Konohagakure. At 8, he mastered his Sharingan eye and, at ten, became a Chūnin. He became the leader of his own Anbu squad at 13.
Because of these accomplishments, the Uchiha Clan (especially his father) believed that he was the future of the prestigious family. This made Fugaku focus most of his attention on Itachi, and not on his brother, Sasuke, who was mostly neglected. Every time Sasuke would ask Itachi to show him some new type of jutsu or a new ability, or just to help him practice with his kunai throwing skill (in which he was very lacking), he never had time, and always responded to him, promising that he would definitely spend time with him later by poking him in the forehead with his index and middle fingers. Itachi began saying that he would train with Sasuke, but he was forced by his missions to break his promise. This too was another reason that his younger brother Sasuke hated him as they grew up. No, not hated, but rather envied. Their father gave him more attention than a teenager like him really needed.
He paid no attention to Sasuke as he grew and became better, seeing that he was nowhere near as much of a prodigy as Itachi was. Itachi did, however, attempt to treat him like a human being. He wanted his eyes to grow up strong, he must have thought. He did, however, make his father spend more time with Sasuke by refusing to do missions unless his father went along.
Six months after he became an Anbu squad leader, Itachi began losing ground with the clan. He began to neglect his missions, and was a prime suspect in his best friend, Shisui Uchiha’s death (Shisui had apparently committed suicide, but it was questioned by the clan elders). When a band of investigators confronted him, he easily defeated them, saying that he had lost faith in the clan. He later apologized at his father’s bidding. Itachi’s father then began spending more time with Sasuke, trying to steer him away from Itachi’s path. In recent flash backs it is revealed that at first, Itachi had a lot of motivation to play with his younger brother, but his mother often forced him to do his homework or some other chore, as if she were trying to keep him from having any form of fun with his younger brother. But, Itachi would tell her that he could always complete his homework later as the assignment was simple. Sasuke had memories of his brother playing hide and seek with him, and finding him, then just using a Shadow Clone (Kage Bunshin) technique to confuse him even more. When the day was over, he would simply poke him in the forehead and tell him that he could continue this «next time» and would then go home.
Upon the night of the Shadow Clone hide and seek game, Sasuke would tell his parents of how much fun they had had playing the game, and how he had lost when Itachi used the clone. Sasuke had hoped to hear some form of positive reply from his parents, who consistently made him feel like he didn’t matter, but all they did when they heard about the game was compliment Itachi on learning the «Shadow Clone» technique already, yet again ignoring him and complimenting Itachi for what he could do. Itachi never showed any emotion towards the subject, and never told his parents how he felt about the way they treated his younger brother. The very next day he would be asked by his younger brother to play with him, and he would just poke him in the forehead again saying that next time he would do it. This would happen for several days, until eventually Sasuke requested that he show him how to do a certain shuriken technique. He would finally train Sasuke, and on the way home, after an exhausting afternoon, Itachi would carry him on his back home, and told him some very important things about their relationship. Most importantly, that they were brothers, and as such, that he would always be there for him, whether he loved him or wanted him or not, but that he would always be there for him no matter what happened between them, and as brothers, this was how it would be.
The Uchiha Clan Massacre
Every one in the clan could sense that there was something extremely wrong, and they did not need Sasuke to be exposed to it. Itachi was becoming more and more like Madara Uchiha every day. Later that week, Sasuke returned to the outskirts of Konoha after a long bout of training with his precision in kunai, as Itachi had shown him earlier that day. He wanted to become one of Konoha’s best with Itachi, and he couldn’t wait to tell his father where he’d been. Little did he know, he would never speak to his father again. Itachi looked down at him under the full moon atop a street lamp.
This was to be the one survivor for the clan. Sasuke continued on his way down the streets, yelling «Hello?» every few steps.Konoha seemed lonely that night. Nobody was out and about, none at all. Suddenly the horrible images popped into his head. His entire family was dead, and he was the last one left. Itachi sent these thoughts into Sasuke’s brain so that he would have more fear and adrenaline.
This drove Sasuke insane for years, to the point where he left the village and based his whole existence on killing Itachi and avenging his clan.
Present
Akatsuki
Sometime later, Itachi found and joined the criminal organization called the Akatsuki. When fellow member Orochimaru attempted to defect and steal Itachi’s body, Itachi disabled him and severed his left hand and forced the snake man to flee. This caused him to lose his Akatsuki ring, thus banning him as a member. Orochimaru, however, kept his lost hand as a reminder, and did not get affiliated with the Akatsuki afterwords, until much later when he was within Sasuke’s body to fight Itachi.
Itachi’s first appearance in the series was placed right after the Chūnin Exams and the Third Hokage’s death arc, in Konoha. Itachi and his partner, Kisame Hoshigake, who first appeared cloaked and with giant brimmed hats, were unnoticeable by the normal public masses as they went along through the village. Their goal to capture Naruto Uzumaki and extract the Nine-Tailed fox spirit inside of him. Asuma Sarutobi and Kurenai Yuhi first sensed the two at a tea shop in Konoha, and then they quickly dragged them off to an area far away from public view, to face their opponents. They commented on how Itachi and his partner were both S-Ranked bingo book criminals, and extremely dangerous, more so than that, had been exiled from Konoha for his crimes. Itachi unmasked himself, and his partner did also, and told them to step aside, as he did not want to kill them. Asuma made a comment on how that was a strange thing for someone who’d committed parricide to say, and Itachi was taken on by Kurenai right after. Asuma and Kisame began to battle also, neither a clear victor, with Asuma using his wind chakra to slice across Kisame’s face without it being a visible blade. As he did this, Kurenai disappeared, and Itachi quickly discerned that this technique was genjutsu. Tree roots began to wrap around him, and he looked up as the upper half of Kurenai’s body formed above him, and sliced down. Itachi looked up and with a sly smile, reversed it with ease. Suddenly, Kurenai was trapped in her own tree roots, and he was holding the kunai intended to slice into Itachi’s body, he thrust forward, and blood trickled down her lip.
Suddenly snapping back into reality, she saw Itachi running forward swinging a kunai horizontally level with her face. She ducked down, and then criss-crossed her arms as she saw his foot raise up in front of her. It shot out, and the resulting kick knocked her so far back that she was no longer on the bridge, but rather regaining her composure on the water beside them, As soon as she stood up, Itachi was already behind her, and in front of her also. Kisame almost unleashed a water type move of lethal proportions, until Kakashi Hatake in the nick of time came, mimicked the move and matched it, and then grabbed Kurenai away from the Itachi behind her, which was actually an explosive shadow clone.
Later, in Part two, Itachi fought Team 7 when they attempted to retrieve a captured Gaara. The fight started once Kakashi and Naruto, along with Chiyo and Sakura Haruno, came upon Itachi in a forest somewhere along the way to what they find as an Akatsuki lair. As he interrupts them, Sakura stays back with Chiyo as Kakashi and Naruto go at him, Kakashi attacking him head on with taijutsu as Naruto stood in the back trying to avoid Itachi’s illusions. He was caught by one within seconds and was not able to recuperate until Sakura and Chiyo interrupted his chakra flow through physical contact, one of the few ways to break a genjutsu as Jiraiya had taught him in the course of their training.
Kakashi was seemingly able to go toe to toe with Itachi, until being caught in a genjutsu, thought this was a shadow clone, and Itachi was stopped for a few seconds as Naruto was given enough time to blow him away with a «Rasengan». After seemingly killing him, they saw that this in fact was just a clone, being taken over from a far away position by Itachi himself, with much less chakra and power.
After they realized that the enemy they had fought and defeated wasn’t Itachi, but rather a traitor from the Sand Village known as Yura, Chiyo pointed out. Itachi from far away pointed out to Kisame that his clone was out, and then teleported back to the Akatsuki lair to continue sending in his chakra.
Talk with Naruto
Naruto, following a bird covered in Sasuke’s scent, hid in a tree as he saw Sharingan, believing them to belong to Sasuke, but they were revealed to be Itachi’s, and he ordered Naruto to come down from the tree he was hiding in. Naruto tries to attack Itachi, but he informs Naruto that he only wishes to speak with him on an unknown subject. Itachi asked him why he didn’t run, and Naruto said that running from him would mean that he couldn’t capture him, and that this would mean that he wouldn’t be able to find Sasuke. When Itachi asked him why he was so concerned with his brother, a rogue ninja, Naruto told him that he considered Sasuke more of a brother than Itachi ever had. Hearing the statement, he grinned and as the young blonde boy charged him he raised his arm, opening his cloak and multiple ravens flew from out of it.
Naruto was stopped by the oncoming attack, and Itachi told him once more that all he wanted to do was talk to him. He told Naruto that he knew that he wanted him to bring Sasuke home, but wondered what he would do if he didn’t want to go. His reply to that question was»I’ll do whatever it takes to bring Sasuke home». After hearing that, he then asked him what he would do if he heard that Sasuke was attacking Konohagakure. Naruto said that he knew Sasuke, and that he would never do something like that at all, and then questioned what Itachi meant, Itachi said that Sasuke was still «pure» and could be affected and taught anything.
After he asked him if he could weigh Sasuke’s life against the village, Naruto became angry, talking about how he would find some way to save the village without hurting Sasuke. When he said this, Itachi responded that he was still far too childish, and that he spoke of nothing but «pipe dreams» while others still had to make painful choices, referring to himself, though Naruto didn’t know it. In truth, the entire conversation had been revolving around whether or not Naruto could succeed where he failed, and save Konoha from imminent destruction by killing him. Then Naruto told him that someone else had said the exact same thing before, but that there was no choice, and that he wouldn’t bend his words, because that was what being a ninja meant to him. After hearing that, Itachi couldn’t help but smile, and then, to Naruto’s surprise, a raven flew straight into his mouth and Itachi told him that he had just given him some of his power, and that he hoped he had never had to use it.
Sasuke vs. Itachi
Itachi goes to meet Sasuke in a location unrevealed. Sasuke attempts to kill Itachi but it turns out to be a «Shadow Clone». Itachi tells Sasuke to meet him at the Secret Uchiha hideout where they can finish their fight there. Upon Sasuke’s arrival, he immediately attacks Itachi.
Then Sasuke faces off with Itachi who’s sitting in a stone chair, with Zetsu secretly watching. They start off with taijutsu where they seem pretty even, Sasuke uses «Chidori Current» to electrify the floor, forcing Itachi into the air where Sasuke stabs him, but it’s not the real Itachi, the real Itachi is still sitting in the chair. Then the real Itachi gets stabbed from behind. It turns out that wasn’t the real Sasuke either.
Sasuke then starts asking Itachi questions about who the other Mangekyou Sharingan user is that Itachi mentioned all those years ago, and who helped him wipe out the clan. Itachi said it was Madara Uchiha and Sasuke thought he was lying because Madara’s supposed to be dead, then Itachi starts explaining the difference between seeing reality and knowing reality. Sasuke then quickly turns behind himself and uses his «Chidori Sword», almost striking Itachi in the face… no, Itachi didn’t move, the Itachi in the chair that Sasuke stabbed wasn’t the real Itachi either, the real Itachi is sitting in a chair BEHIND the one Sasuke stabbed. Zetsu then comments how neither of them have moved an inch since Sasuke walked in, and assumed that they must be having a battle of genjutsu.
Itachi then starts explaining through genjutsu about the Mangekyou Sharingan and revealed some of Madara’s past, such as creating Akatsuki and hiding in it’s shadow and becoming Itachi’s teacher. He says that Madara was the first to awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan while competing with his younger brother, then Madara’s younger brother did. He then said that Madara was also the first to discover the downside of the Mangekyou Sharingan and went blind. He was then «possessed» by the Mangekyou Sharingan which sought new light and stole his younger brother’s eyes and gained a new more powerful Mangekyou Sharingan that would never lose it’s «light» and gained a new technique. After this the Uchiha started killing each other trying to also gain the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. Madara then took control of many ninja clans and allied with the leader of the Senju clan and they created Konoha. But years later they had a dispute about leadership and fought, and the leader of the Senju clan became the First Hokage.
Itachi then breaks it all down… Sasuke is Itachi’s «spare» pair of Sharingan eyes. Itachi had been planning on taking Sasuke’s eyes all along. Sasuke then removes the wrapping from his forearms, revealing seals. He pulls shuriken out of these seals and throws them at Itachi, whom deflects them with his own shuriken. They then grapple each other and Itachi creates a «Shadow Clone» which throws kunai at Sasuke. A snake however comes out of Sasuke’s body and wraps around him, protecting him from the kunai. The two Itachi’s regroup and Sasuke unseals a giant shuriken that he throws and the Shadow Clone is destroyed trying to block it, but turns into a flock of crows that distract Sasuke while Itachi kicks him against the wall and holds him there and pulls out Sasuke’s left eye and places it in a jar. Itachi then reaches for the right eye but Sasuke uses Curse Seal level 2 and breaks free… literally, it was Tsukiyomi and Sasuke managed to break out of it. Itachi’s left eye was then put through a lot of pain from Sasuke breaking free.
One half of Zetsu is in disbelief that Sasuke could break free without having a Mangekyou Sharingan himself, but the other half of Zetsu responds that Sasuke must have mastered the normal Sharingan to a point that Itachi hasn’t and that an expert with a stone can beat a novice with a shuriken. Itachi then readies himself to use «Amaterasu» but Sasuke unseals a giant shuriken from the seal on his arm and throws it at him. Itachi ducks under it but realizes that there’s another hidden in the top one’s shadow and leaps between the two. The shuriken is rigged, however, and Sasuke, by pulling on a string attached to them, makes the blades shoot in all different directions, one of which hits Itachi in the leg. Sasuke uses the «Grand Fireball» and Itachi leaps out of the way, Sasuke follows and Itachi then counters with his own Grand Fireball, but Sasuke partially transforms into his Curse Mark level 2 form and blocks with his wing. They then square off and both use «Grand Fireball». Itachi starts losing the struggle and finally uses «Amaterasu» which starts engulfing Sasuke’s fireball.
«Amaterasu» stops after devouring Sasuke’s technique. Sasuke then runs to avoid Itachi’s next attempt, but Itachi makes «Amaterasu» chase him until it finally touches his wing. Sasuke collapses on the ground where his body is burning. Now blind in his right eye, Itachi goes to retrieve his «prize,» but Sasuke’s body shrivels up; it’s revealed that Sasuke used his «Chidori» to break a whole on the roof and used Orochimaru’s skin shedding technique and slide down to the surface below. That technique gave Sasuke a completely new body unharmed by «Amaterasu», however it depleted a great deal of chakra.
Having walked into Sasuke’s trap, he unleashes two «Great Dragon Fireballs» from beneath Itachi. Itachi avoids the first but the second one burns his arm and they ascend into the clouds which begin to churn and turn dark. Though Sasuke is nearly out of chakra, he tried to miss on purpose, using Itachi’s «Amaterasu» combined with his own technique to create a hot updraft to form storm clouds. Then by using his chakra, Sasuke guides a naturally occurring lightning bolt towards Itachi in order to kill him.
Sasuke believes that he has won, however an almost completely blind Itachi stands up and is shown standing in the center of a giant spectral skeleton’s ribcage. He says that he would had died, but now it’s time to use his final technique, «Susanoo.» Itachi explains that Susanoo can be released after using both «Tsukiyomi» and «Amaterasu» and the skeleton surrounding Itachi starts to take a humanoid appearance. Orochimaru starts to whisper in Sasuke’s head, telling him that he can help exact his revenge. A white snake then appears from Sasuke’s shoulder and he transforms into a giant eight-headed snake. He attacks Itachi, but Susanoo forms a sword from a gourd that he’s holding and chops off each of the snake’s heads in the struggle.
Orochimaru emerges from the snake’s last head, declaring that he’s going to take Sasuke’s body and kill Itachi, but he is struck through the chest by Susanoo’s sword. Orochimaru laughed saying that such an attack couldn’t kill him… but then he recognized the sword; it was a sword he had been searching for called «Totsuka no Tsurugi», a sword that has sealing properties which traps the victim. The blade stabs Orochimaru, envelopes him, and pulls both him and his snakes into the gourd. Zetsu mentioned that it was no wonder Orochimaru couldn’t find the Totsuka. Itachi then makes his way to Sasuke who’s on the ground and as Susanoo finishes absorbing Orochimaru, some of the white snakes escaped and slithered away.
Itachi then begins to walk over to Sasuke, but coughs blood and grabs his chest in pain while Susanoo starts to fade; Zetsu comments that Susanoo is not without it’s drawbacks.
Seeing this as an opening, Sasuke attacks with multiple explosive kunai, but Susanoo blocks them with his shield. Sasuke unseals several explosive kunai from a scroll and throws them at Itachi, but Susanoo once again blocks them with his shield. Zetsu comments that he recognizes Susanoo’s shield as the Yata Mirror, one of the three sacred treasures which deflects whatever hits it. Sasuke charges at Itachi with his sword, but to no avail.
Itachi slowly crept up to him, looking like he was in a zombie state, craving Sasuke’s eyes. He looked at him, tired and worn from using every powerful Kekkai Genkai he had. Itachi slowly reached forward with his blood covered right hand towards Sasuke’s face. Itachi tapped his forehead, the blood covered finger slowly dragged itself down Sasuke’s face as he collapsed. Sasuke then looked into the sky, sweating and heaving, as the pride of the Uchiha clan lay dead next to him.
The Truth
To Sasuke’s disbelief, it would later be revealed by Tobi, a.k.a. Madara Uchiha, that Itachi, in all of his dark deeds and ways, had actually done all of these seeming crimes to keep Sasuke safe. As it would turn out, when Itachi poked Sasuke in his forehead, seconds before his death, he had transferred the techniques of his Mangyekou eyes. Sasuke, of course, did not believe him at all, and went into a state of rage and confusion, saying that there was no earthly way that he would have done that.
The proof of it all was that when Sasuke saw Tobi’s Sharingan that Itachi’s «Amaterasu» would activate, engulfing Madara in its black flame.
Madara would then reveal that Itachi was actually a man who had risked it all into saving the Leaf Village. Sasuke continued to listen to Tobi’s story, and eventually came to his senses that the man was telling the truth, despite how insane he came off as being. Madara continued to explain that yes, while the prodigal son of the Uchiha Clan had indeed killed his entire clan in that one night, he had done due to orders of Konoha. Sasuke found that this was a highly unlikely aspect of Itachi, and, as he remembered Itachi all of those years, he questioned how this could have been the brother he’d known.
Tobi told him to think of all of the times he’d had with his kind, big brother, and he could remember them being children and the smiles he’d had. He thought of how he’d tried to take his eyes, and then saw black. Madara explained that he believed that Itachi had implanted his «Amaterasu» into sasuke so that the two would never meet, and told him that while he had no proof, he should still listen to his story, as only three people knew about Itachi’s truth, and they’d never spill it out of them. He told him that he’d have to start from the beginning for Sasuke to understand, and then proceeded to tell him of the long history of the Uchiha Clan and their rivals, the Senju clan of the forest. Madara went on to explain how eventually, the Uchiha lost to the many people of the Senju clan, and how he had taken his brothers eyes to save the Uchiha Clan, as there were no great warriors anymore to fight back, and his brother even agreed to give up his eyes. But the Senju clan would offer and alliance with the Uchiha, which Madara uneasily accepted at the request of his clan. Together they formed Konohagakure, but the leader of the Senju was appointed Hokage and Madara was worried about their once greatest enemies being in power and apposed him or leadership, though he was betrayed, the Uchihas saying that he had taken his little brother’s eyes for his own sake, not the sake of the clans itself. He sought revenge and attacked the village, but was defeated. The Senju however didn’t trust the Uchiha and this lead to problems, then the Uchihas were blamed for the Kyuubi attack 16 years ago which lead to Sasuke’s and Itachi’s father planning to take over the village. Itachi was supposed to be his father’s spy in the Anbu, but secretly gave away the Uchiha’s secrets. He was against the coup and was ordered by the village elders to eliminate the Uchiha before their actions bring about a Fourth Ninja War and destroy Konoha. Itachi sought out Madara for help in the massacre and made him promise not to harm the rest of the village in return for his chance at revenge against the Uchiha. Afterwards, Itachi begged the Third Hokage to protect Sasuke and then left the village and joined Akatsuki to keep an eye on them.
Madara then revealed that the entire reason for Itachi’s return after the Third Hokage’s death was to prove that he was still alive so Sasuke wouldn’t be harmed, and that he was slowly dying of a disease. His love for Sasuke had been incomparable as he had died smiling, even after he was repaid for his love with hatred, and his honor for dishonor and more hatred, believing Sasuke to be worth more than Konoha.
When Sasuke accused Madara of lying to him, and trying to cloud his mind, he told him that he was still alive. An interesting and true fact was that he was still alive, and also that Itachi had planned the entire fight out before it even happened. Forcing Sasuke to purge Orochimaru and trying to make Sasuke open his mangekyou sharingan eyes on that day, and him killing Itachi made him the avenger of his clan so he’d return to Konoha as a hero. All in all, Itachi had simply been alive for Sasuke’s benefit, causing him to go into an emotional rage and putting him into a state of confusion. He would then after decide that now, rather than avenge his clan with Itachi’s method, he would regroup team Hebi, changing the name to team Taka, and ally with Akatsuki. Then after finally attaining a Mangekyou Sharingan of his own, vowed to crush Konohagakure.
Powers and Techniques
Itachi’s natural element is Fire, and his secondary element is Water.
Itachi possesses the Sharingan, an Uchiha bloodline limit in his eyes.
The Sharingan allows him to see the slightest movement and copy techniques, it also allows him to see through genjutsus, and use genjutsus by making eye contact. But Itachi can also use an evolved version of the Sharingan, called the Mangekyo Sharingan. The Mangekyou Sharingan allows Itachi to use «Tsukuyomi,» which is a jutsu that allows him to invade one’s mind by making eye contact and trap him/her in a world of his design that seems to last 72 hours, but in reality only last 3 seconds.
He can also use «Amaterasu,» whatever he looks at will be engulfed in a black flame which burns anything, even fire. And finally he can use «Susanoo» which takes the form of a giant humanoid that wields the Totsuka sword and Yata mirror. The sword seals whomever it strikes in a dream-like world, and the shield can deflect anything that hits it.
The downside to the Mangekyou Sharingan is that it’s techniques require a great deal of chakra, and over-use will cause the user to go blind. This is why Itachi wants to use Sasuke’s eyes after he’s depleted his own.
—Itachi has used techniques including: «Grand Fireball» where he exhales a gigantic ball of fire.
—«Shadow Clone» where he creates a copy of himself that is capable of fighting and using techniques, but can’t take very much damage without dispersing.
—«Exploding Clone,» where he creates a copy of himself that will explode.
—«Water Fang» where a drill of water will appear and strike the opponent.
—«Ephemeral,» an illusion technique that will cause his opponent to see and hear their friends and loved ones insult and humiliate them.
Another genjutsu, «Earth and Heaven Change» allows Itachi to reverse genjutsu back on the opponent whom used it.
