The name comes from the first Auchan shop in Roubaix in the district of Hauts-Champs, the pronunciation of which is identical to that of «Auchan».^[4]

The holding company, Auchan Holding, includes Auchan Retail International, Ceetrus, which operates shopping centers and Oney, which offers financial services. It operates as Alcampo in Spain («al campo» is the literal Spanish translation of the French «au champ»), Auchan in Portugal, Aшан (Ashan) in Russia and Ukraine, and through a joint-venture as RT-Mart in China (Auchan brand is also used) and Taiwan.

As of 2022, Auchan is one of the world’s largest retailers with a direct presence in France, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia, Taiwan and Senegal.

Auchan is notable for being a rare example of a Western company continuing to operate in Russia after Moscow sent thousands of troops into Ukraine^[5] and actively supporting Russian military effort.^[6][7]

HistoryEdit

1961–1969: The beginningsEdit

After meeting the founders of the Carrefour and Leclerc,^[8] on July 6, 1961, Gérard Mulliez opens the first Auchan store in a disused factory of the company Phildar, founded by his father, also named Gérard.^[9] Covering an area of 600 m², this store was located in the district of Hauts-Champs, in Roubaix. Originally, the store was to be called «Ochan», but because of the Japanese sounding, changed the name to «Auchan».^[10] The choice of the initial letter «A» was desired by the founders to appear in first place in directories. Gérard Mulliez relied on the advice of Édouard Leclerc to open his first supermarket. This store had to be closed in the 1980s because of strong competition with the one that had been built in Leers. The building was bought by the Intermarché. In 2003 it was demolished to make space for a more modern store.

In the summer of 1967, on 20 August, Auchan opens its first hypermarket in Roncq in an initially commercial area of 3500 m².^[11] According to Gérard Mulliez, Roncq location served as a model for other hypermarkets in France in non-food enlargement.^[12] On March 27, 1969 was opened the Englos-les-Géants shopping center at Englos in the Lille metropolis. Englos les Giants was the first shopping mall with a hypermarket and a retail park in France.^[13]

ChinaEdit

Auchan opened its first store in Shanghai in 1999. It operates through Sun Art Retail Group, a public company listed in Hong Kong, in which Auchan holds 38,5% stake and Alibaba Group 26%.^[14]

Suzhou Jinji Lake store that is located in Suzhou Industrial Park had nine million visitors during that fiscal year with over four hundred million turnover and became one of the biggest Auchan hypermarkets in the world. Suzhou store expanded in 2008 and is the biggest Auchan Hypermarket in China, the second biggest in the world. Also, Auchan China led to open its online shopping website for the stores in Shanghai and Suzhou.

Auchan offers online shopping only in those two cities so far and is opening in Suzhou its first AuchanDrive store, based on its French model (click & go) in May 2012. The AuchanDrive service allows customers to purchase groceries online for home delivery, these locations being examples of online supermarkets in China.

Since 2017, a number of unmanned convenience stores, marketed as BingoBox, are being operated by Auchan in China.^[15][16]

Auchan (branded as Aшан) has been active on the Russian market since 2002 and had over 100 hypermarkets in the country by December 2016. It’s the company’s third largest market, after France and China.^[17] Revenues for the country reached $5 billion in 2014, ranking third behind the local retailers X5 Retail Group and Magnit.^[18] In 2016 it was ranked first in a list of the largest foreign-owned companies by the Russian edition of Forbes.^[19]

In November 2021, Russian “Auchan” signed with online-delivery service «Sbermarket» a deal of strategic partnership in e-commerce until 2028. First, from 2022, both partners will be focused on delivery from darkstores as well as delivery and loyalty programs for B2B clients.^[20] In January 2022, Russian Auchan switched on 73 stores (more than a half of its stores, including «Atak») to Sbermarket delivery.^[21]
One of few companies still operating in Russia after the country invaded and went to war against Ukraine. Despite EU and US sanctions Auchan have continued their operations in Russia, arguing they will continue to do so for «humanitarian reasons».

In 2023 joint investigation by The Insider, Bellingcat and Le Monde revealed that Auchan Russia is actively supporting Russian occupational forces in Ukraine by periodically supplying food, clothes, cigarettes and other items. Official Auchan communications claimed these items were supplied to Donbas as «humanitarian help» but as noted in the investigation, all collected items were targeted at «adult men» including items that are never supplied in regular humanitarian help, such as cigarettes, and were thus intended for Russian soldiers. Auchan Russia reportedly both organizes «mandatory voluntary» collections among its employees and provides batches of these items for free.^[6][7]

Auchan Holding is composed by Auchan Retail, Ceetrus and Oney. It also consists of: Ceetrus (former Immochan), the division which operates shopping centers and hypermarket galleries and Oney (former Bank Accord), the financial services group that offers consumer credits and Auchan and Leroy Merlin credit cards.

Withdrawn venturesEdit

Auchan opened a number of stores in Mexico; the first of these opened in Mexico City in 1996 and eventually grew to five stores.The first store located in Tlatelolco, was sold to Comercial Mexicana in 1998. Faced with stiff competition from Wal-Mart, as well as local superstore chains Gigante and Comercial Mexicana, and French rival Carrefour (who also sold their stores and left the country in March 2005), Auchan decided to sell their stores to Comercial Mexicana and withdrew from Mexico in early 2003, the 3 stores located in Tlatelolco, Gran Sur and Arboledas, were sold to Soriana in 2016.

In 2002 Auchan sold its hypermarkets in Thailand to Groupe Casino.

Auchan did business in the United States from 1988 to 2003 as Auchan Hypermarket under its subsidiary, Auchan USA,^[24] who was the successor of interest to Texfield Inc.^[25] By the time of its closing it was the only French hypermarket chain to still operate American stores, as other hypermarket chains, such as Carrefour and E.Leclerc (under the guise of Leedmark) gave up in the United States market around
1993–1994.^[26]

The first American Auchan (pronounced by Houstonians as “o-shawn”) store opened in western Houston on October 14, 1988.^[27] The 250,000-square-foot (23,000 m²) hypermarket was located on a 31.3-acre (12.7 ha) plot of land on Beltway 8, north of U.S. Route 59/Interstate 69. The store was one of many hypermarkets to open in the U.S in the late 80’s,
after Walmart debuted Hypermart USA in December 1987, and Carrefour’s Philadelphia store debuted in March 1988.^[24] David Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle said «it was fairly unusual and became something of a tourist attraction» when it had first opened, as it was big enough to house many small businesses in front, such as a travel agency, a jewelry store, a bank, and a food court containing a Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and Pizza Hut. It also featured a huge cheese selection, a huge beer and wine selection, featuring local breweries such as Celis White, and a bakery, and like most hypermarkets operating in the U.S. in the late 1980s, as well as Aldi, Auchan also made customers use quarters to use the shopping carts, and in order to appeal to Houstonians, it had a huge seafood selection, as well as rodeo wear.^[28]

Auchan also opened a store in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview, Illinois, in 1989.^[29] It only sold food, and it was not as large as the Houston store. In 1991 the store closed.^[28] It was later bought by a local Chicago supermarket chain, Dominick’s, and converted into an Omni Superstore by 1991.

Auchan’s second Greater Houston location opened in southeast Houston in September 2000, in a former Target store, which Auchan heavily renovated (and partially built up on) prior to opening, the most obvious example being the entrances, designed to make it look huge, despite its past as a Target.^[27] Kaplan said, «Auchan had solid business its first years, but with only two stores in the country, the company lacked buying power and economy-of-scale advantages.»^[28] In early January 2003 Auchan announced that both of its U.S. stores were making losses and were going to be closed; Auchan stated that it was instead going to concentrate its expansion in Asia and Europe, and on January 6, 2003, Auchan closed the two money-losing stores, ending all American operations after 15 years.^[27] Auchan USA sold its first Houston location to Ho Enterprises. Lewis Food Town occupied about 110,000 square feet (10,000 m²) of the space, with the rest of the space taken by other tenants, which makes the store a bit like a mini-mall today.^[24] Kaplan said that by 2003, «the Houston market is saturated with huge discounters and large grocery stores.»^[28] In addition, many similar stores, including an H-E-B Food and Drug Store, the Hong Kong Supermarket, a Sam’s Club, and a Wal-Mart had opened in proximity to the west Houston Auchan. In Europe, zoning laws would prevent such a high concentration of similar stores. Kaplan further added that «In Europe, shopping malls are not as prevalent as they are in America, and Auchan’s everything-under-one-roof concept has greater appeal» in Europe rather than in the United States.^[28] The second former Auchan is now used by a local scaffolding company, and was used as a shelter for Hurricane Katrina victims in 2005 and Hurricane Ike victims in 2008 due to its large space.^[30]

Building collapse at SavarEdit

On 24 April 2013, the eight-story Rana Plaza commercial building collapsed in Savar, a sub-district near Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. At least 1,127 people died and over 2,438 were injured.^[31] The factory housed a number of separate garment factories employing around 5,000 people, several shops, and a bank^[32] and manufactured apparel for brands including the Benetton Group, Joe Fresh,^[33] The Children’s Place, Primark, Monsoon, and DressBarn.^[34][35] Of the 29 brands identified as having sourced products from the Rana Plaza factories, only 9 attended meetings held in November 2013 to agree a proposal on compensation to the victims. Several companies refused to sign including Walmart, Carrefour, Mango, Auchan and Kik. The agreement was signed by Primark, Loblaw, Bonmarché and El Corte Ingles.^[36]

2022 Russian invasion of UkraineEdit

Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine which began on February 24, many international, particularly Western companies pulled out of Russia. Auchan, with nearly 300 stores and 41,000 employees in Russia, has been criticized for not announcing any scaling down of its operations, unlike most of its Western competitors.^[37][38]

According to documents obtained by the NGO Bellingcat, the independent Russian media The Insider and Le Monde, the retail company, owned by the Mulliez family, eighth French fortune according to Challenges, is allegedly participating in the Russian war effort.^{[39] [40]}

On February 23, 2023, the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption added the French chain Auchan Holding to the list of international sponsors of the war.^{[41] [42]} During the full-scale invasion, the company refused to leave the Russian market, and its Russian subsidiary Auchan supplied products to the Russian occupiers fighting in Ukraine. The corporation itself denied the branch’s involvement in helping the Russians, and justified its decision to stay in Russia by helping the civilian population.^[43][44]

In Europe, zoning laws would prevent such a high concentration of similar stores. Kaplan further added that «In Europe, shopping malls are not as prevalent as they are in America, and Auchan’s everything-under-one-roof concept has greater appeal» in Europe rather than in the United States.^[28] The second former Auchan is now used by a local scaffolding company, and was used as a shelter for Hurricane Katrina victims in 2005 and Hurricane Ike victims in 2008 due to its large space.^[30]

Building collapse at Savar[edit]

On 24 April 2013, the eight-story Rana Plaza commercial building collapsed in Savar, a sub-district near Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. At least 1,127 people died and over 2,438 were injured.^[31] The factory housed a number of separate garment factories employing around 5,000 people, several shops, and a bank^[32] and manufactured apparel for brands including the Benetton Group, Joe Fresh,^[33] The Children’s Place, Primark, Monsoon, and DressBarn.^[34][35] Of the 29 brands identified as having sourced products from the Rana Plaza factories, only 9 attended meetings held in November 2013 to agree a proposal on compensation to the victims. Several companies refused to sign including Walmart, Carrefour, Mango, Auchan and Kik. The agreement was signed by Primark, Loblaw, Bonmarché and El Corte Ingles.^[36]

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine[edit]

Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine which began on February 24, many international, particularly Western companies pulled out of Russia. Auchan, with nearly 300 stores and 41,000 employees in Russia, has been criticized for not announcing any scaling down of its operations, unlike most of its Western competitors.^[37][38]

According to documents obtained by the NGO Bellingcat, the independent Russian media The Insider and Le Monde, the retail company, owned by the Mulliez family, eighth French fortune according to Challenges, is allegedly participating in the Russian war effort.^{[39] [40]}

On February 23, 2023, the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption added the French chain Auchan Holding to the list of international sponsors of the war.^{[41] [42]} During the full-scale invasion, the company refused to leave the Russian market, and its Russian subsidiary Auchan supplied products to the Russian occupiers fighting in Ukraine. The corporation itself denied the branch’s involvement in helping the Russians, and justified its decision to stay in Russia by helping the civilian population.^[43][44]

Auchan (French pronunciation: ​[oʃɑ̃]) is a French multinational retail group headquartered in Croix, France.^[2] It was founded in 1961 by Gérard Mulliez and is owned by the Mulliez family, who has 95% stake in the company.^[3]
With 354,851 employees, of which 261,000 have 5% stake in the company, it is the 35th largest employer in the world.

The name comes from the first Auchan shop in Roubaix in the district of Hauts-Champs, the pronunciation of which is identical to that of «Auchan».^[4]

The holding company, Auchan Holding, includes Auchan Retail International, Ceetrus, which operates shopping centers and Oney, which offers financial services. It operates as Alcampo in Spain («al campo» is the literal Spanish translation of the French «au champ»), Auchan in Portugal, Aшан (Ashan) in Russia and Ukraine, and through a joint-venture as RT-Mart in China (Auchan brand is also used) and Taiwan.

As of 2022, Auchan is one of the world’s largest retailers with a direct presence in France, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia, Taiwan and Senegal.

Auchan is notable for being a rare example of a Western company continuing to operate in Russia after Moscow sent thousands of troops into Ukraine^[5] and actively supporting Russian military effort.^[6][7]

1961–1969: The beginnings[edit]

After meeting the founders of the Carrefour and Leclerc,^[8] on July 6, 1961, Gérard Mulliez opens the first Auchan store in a disused factory of the company Phildar, founded by his father, also named Gérard.^[9] Covering an area of 600 m², this store was located in the district of Hauts-Champs, in Roubaix. Originally, the store was to be called «Ochan», but because of the Japanese sounding, changed the name to «Auchan».^[10] The choice of the initial letter «A» was desired by the founders to appear in first place in directories. Gérard Mulliez relied on the advice of Édouard Leclerc to open his first supermarket. This store had to be closed in the 1980s because of strong competition with the one that had been built in Leers. The building was bought by the Intermarché. In 2003 it was demolished to make space for a more modern store.

In the summer of 1967, on 20 August, Auchan opens its first hypermarket in Roncq in an initially commercial area of 3500 m².^[11] According to Gérard Mulliez, Roncq location served as a model for other hypermarkets in France in non-food enlargement.^[12] On March 27, 1969 was opened the Englos-les-Géants shopping center at Englos in the Lille metropolis. Englos les Giants was the first shopping mall with a hypermarket and a retail park in France.^[13]

Auchan SA is controlled by the Mulliez family, one of the wealthiest in France and in Europe. The Mulliez family also owns Leroy Merlin, Decathlon and other retailers.

Auchan opened its first store in Shanghai in 1999. It operates through Sun Art Retail Group, a public company listed in Hong Kong, in which Auchan holds 38,5% stake and Alibaba Group 26%.^[14]

Suzhou Jinji Lake store that is located in Suzhou Industrial Park had nine million visitors during that fiscal year with over four hundred million turnover and became one of the biggest Auchan hypermarkets in the world. Suzhou store expanded in 2008 and is the biggest Auchan Hypermarket in China, the second biggest in the world. Also, Auchan China led to open its online shopping website for the stores in Shanghai and Suzhou.

Auchan offers online shopping only in those two cities so far and is opening in Suzhou its first AuchanDrive store, based on its French model (click & go) in May 2012. The AuchanDrive service allows customers to purchase groceries online for home delivery, these locations being examples of online supermarkets in China.

Since 2017, a number of unmanned convenience stores, marketed as BingoBox, are being operated by Auchan in China.^[15][16]

In 2020, Auchan leaves China, after selling its shares to Alibaba.

Russia[edit]

Auchan (branded as Aшан) has been active on the Russian market since 2002 and had over 100 hypermarkets in the country by December 2016. It’s the company’s third largest market, after France and China.^[17] Revenues for the country reached $5 billion in 2014, ranking third behind the local retailers X5 Retail Group and Magnit.^[18] In 2016 it was ranked first in a list of the largest foreign-owned companies by the Russian edition of Forbes.^[19]

In November 2021, Russian “Auchan” signed with online-delivery service «Sbermarket» a deal of strategic partnership in e-commerce until 2028. First, from 2022, both partners will be focused on delivery from darkstores as well as delivery and loyalty programs for B2B clients.^[20] In January 2022, Russian Auchan switched on 73 stores (more than a half of its stores, including «Atak») to Sbermarket delivery.^[21]
One of few companies still operating in Russia after the country invaded and went to war against Ukraine. Despite EU and US sanctions Auchan have continued their operations in Russia, arguing they will continue to do so for «humanitarian reasons».

In 2023 joint investigation by The Insider, Bellingcat and Le Monde revealed that Auchan Russia is actively supporting Russian occupational forces in Ukraine by periodically supplying food, clothes, cigarettes and other items. Official Auchan communications claimed these items were supplied to Donbas as «humanitarian help» but as noted in the investigation, all collected items were targeted at «adult men» including items that are never supplied in regular humanitarian help, such as cigarettes, and were thus intended for Russian soldiers. Auchan Russia reportedly both organizes «mandatory voluntary» collections among its employees and provides batches of these items for free.^[6][7]

Auchan Holding[edit]

Auchan Holding is composed by Auchan Retail, Ceetrus and Oney. It also consists of: Ceetrus (former Immochan), the division which operates shopping centers and hypermarket galleries and Oney (former Bank Accord), the financial services group that offers consumer credits and Auchan and Leroy Merlin credit cards.

Slogan[edit]

The slogan of the company was La Vie, La Vraie, which translates into English as «Life, the real one». The slogan was changed in 2007 to: La vie Auchan, elle change la vie – «Auchan’s lifestyle changes life (itself).

Withdrawn ventures[edit]

Auchan opened a number of stores in Mexico; the first of these opened in Mexico City in 1996 and eventually grew to five stores.The first store located in Tlatelolco, was sold to Comercial Mexicana in 1998. Faced with stiff competition from Wal-Mart, as well as local superstore chains Gigante and Comercial Mexicana, and French rival Carrefour (who also sold their stores and left the country in March 2005), Auchan decided to sell their stores to Comercial Mexicana and withdrew from Mexico in early 2003, the 3 stores located in Tlatelolco, Gran Sur and Arboledas, were sold to Soriana in 2016.

In 2002 Auchan sold its hypermarkets in Thailand to Groupe Casino.

In 2007 Auchan sold its Argentine stores to Wal-Mart and withdrew from the country.

Following a conflict with its Moroccan partner ONA, Auchan sold its 49% share in August 2007.

In January 2011 Auchan dropped out of the Dubai market after just two years.^[22]

The first Italian Auchan hypermarket was opened in Turin on 1989. In 2019 Auchan withdrew from Italy due to financial losses, by selling most of the activities of its Auchan Retail Italia to the Italian retailer Conad.
Also withdrew from Vietnam due to losses and slow development.^[23]

United States[edit]

Auchan did business in the United States from 1988 to 2003 as Auchan Hypermarket under its subsidiary, Auchan USA,^[24] who was the successor of interest to Texfield Inc.^[25] By the time of its closing it was the only French hypermarket chain to still operate American stores, as other hypermarket chains, such as Carrefour and E.Leclerc (under the guise of Leedmark) gave up in the United States market around
1993–1994.^[26]

The first American Auchan (pronounced by Houstonians as “o-shawn”) store opened in western Houston on October 14, 1988.^[27] The 250,000-square-foot (23,000 m²) hypermarket was located on a 31.3-acre (12.7 ha) plot of land on Beltway 8, north of U.S. Route 59/Interstate 69. The store was one of many hypermarkets to open in the U.S in the late 80’s,
after Walmart debuted Hypermart USA in December 1987, and Carrefour’s Philadelphia store debuted in March 1988.^[24] David Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle said «it was fairly unusual and became something of a tourist attraction» when it had first opened, as it was big enough to house many small businesses in front, such as a travel agency, a jewelry store, a bank, and a food court containing a Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and Pizza Hut. It also featured a huge cheese selection, a huge beer and wine selection, featuring local breweries such as Celis White, and a bakery, and like most hypermarkets operating in the U.S. in the late 1980s, as well as Aldi, Auchan also made customers use quarters to use the shopping carts, and in order to appeal to Houstonians, it had a huge seafood selection, as well as rodeo wear.^[28]

Auchan also opened a store in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview, Illinois, in 1989.^[29] It only sold food, and it was not as large as the Houston store. In 1991 the store closed.^[28] It was later bought by a local Chicago supermarket chain, Dominick’s, and converted into an Omni Superstore by 1991.

История создания первого магазина данной торговой сети берет свое начало несколько позже. На тот момент производство оставалось основным бизнесом семьи Мюлье. Несмотря на то что первые попытки открытия магазина розничной торговли оказались неудачными, Жерар-старший решил попробовать еще раз. И на этот раз доверил это дело сыну.

Так в 1960 году началась история магазина «Ашан». В этот период Мюлье-старший поехал в город Дейтон для участия в семинаре, который был организован компанией, занимающейся поиском покупателей именно среди французских торговых сетей для введения в эксплуатацию специальных контрольно-кассовых машин (прототипов ЭККА). Семинар вел Б.

Трурийо, известный как яростный приверженец магазинов самообслуживания. Он призывал не только сокращать расходы на персонал, обслуживающий покупателей в зале, но и снижать цены в рамках экономии.

Также гипермаркет «Ашан» в числе первых «организовал» прилегающую парковку, благодаря которой покупатели могут приезжать на автомобилях за покупками.

Открытие первого магазина

Вдохновившись новыми идеями, Жерар-старший отправил на данный семинар сына, который сразу становится горячим сторонником такой новой формы осуществления торговой деятельности. Таким образом был открыт первый магазин «Ашан», история создания которого описывается в нашем обзоре.

Уже в тот период Мюлье понял, что именно за супермаркетами будущее. Он решил попробовать открыть гипермаркет «Ашан» во Франции, который впоследствии стал символом деловой Франции, благодаря чему семья Мюлье еще больше разбогатела.

Рождение сети «Ашан»

История создания взяла старт в июле 1961 года, когда был открыт первый магазин. По семейным трацидиям все представители Мюлье получили одинаковые доли в магазине.

Однако в данном случае были некоторые нюансы: Жерар-младший начал этот бизнес с партнером. Это было связано с недоверием, с которым отнеслись в семье к этой идее.

Поэтому история «Ашана» связана с именем промышленника Мишеля Сегара, вложившего в данную торговую сеть порядка 600 тыс. франков (50% доли компании). И это шло вразрез с принципами семьи Мюлье.

Впервые это проявилось на первом же году работы в виде убытков порядка 200 тыс. франков. На тот момент гипермаркет «Ашан» еще не был таким огромным, как сейчас.

Поэтому размер убытков был колоссальной суммой для него.

В этот период семья Мюлье уже начала подумывать, чтобы закрыть магазин «Ашан». История компании могла бы и не состояться, если бы не мудрость главы семейства. На развитие этого направления бизнеса он дал сыну три года.

Однако Жераром-старшим было выдвинуто единственное условие – выход из партнерства Сегара. Ведь уже известно, что семья Мюлье не признавала партнерства извне.

Расцвет сети магазинов «Ашан»

Эти три года для Жерара-младшего не прошли даром. Он довольно успешно начал перенимать опыт у опытных продавцов, которые ему рассказали, как правильно выложить товар, а также о правилах применения скидок на продукцию. Эти советы имели высокую ценность для начинающего предпринимателя.

Немаловажными для приобретения опыта в розничной торговле были встречи с Марселем Фурнье (владелец сети Carrefour), который ему доказал, что продать сотню коробок конфет с маленькой наценкой намного выгодней, чем десять коробков, но с высокой наценкой.

Успех магазинов «Ашан» и сегодня связан с дешевизной продаваемых товаров. Первый огромный гипермаркет общей площадью в 12 тыс. кв. метров с таким названием был открыт в 1967 году в г. Ронке.

Мерчандайзинг – важная составляющая магазинов розничной торговли

С развитием этой сети магазинов активно развивался и мерчандайзинг. Торговые площадки активно брали во внимание все новшества в торговле.

В 1977 году имели место такие новации, как премирование сотрудников акциями данной компании. Таким образом, в итоге в руках работников оказалось 17% акций магазина «Ашан».

С 1981 года начинается активное расширение сети магазинов по всему миру. Всего насчитывается более 1100 супермаркетов в 12 государствах со 186 тысячами сотрудников и соответствующими оборотами (не менее 37 млрд евро).

Однако семейные традиции продолжают сохраняться, а члены семьи Мюлье все также имеют равные доли в каждой компании.

Название «Ашан» получил от французского наименования местности, где родился Жерар Мюлье-младший. По-французски произносится «О Шам». Такое же название носил и первый открывшийся супермаркет в России. Однако с учетом особенностей российской лингвистики компания была перерегистрирована в «Ашан».

В 2006 году основатель сети магазинов уже отошел от руководства. Однако продолжает в свои 83 года активно участвовать в делах компании.

Как переводится ашан?

Название «Ашан» фонетически созвучно с местностью, на которой был впервые открыт этот магазин «hauts champs», что перевести можно, как «на полях».

Как вам известно, «Ашан» это название корпорации магазинов. Правильнее будет сказать, сети магазинов. Здесь и продукты продаются и техника тоже.

А вообще-то, названия многим корпорациям даются просто по какому-то непонятному принципу. Логии в нём никакой.

Если с «Microsoft» всё понятно, то с «Асусом» нет.

Кстати, с французским словом «Champ» связано много названий. Например, название грибов «шампиньоны». Это название говорит о том. что эти грибы в диких условиях растут на полях. Хотя и разводить можно их в домашних условиях, прямо на даче. Просто в погребе надо создать определённые условия, и если повезёт, то зимой будете кушать свои шампиньоны.

Так же, с этим словом связано название традиционного новогоднего напитка шампанского. Точнее, не столько с полями, сколько с названием французской провинции Шампань.

А всё дело в том. что монах, который сумел изобрести шампанское жил именно в провинции Шампань.

Это всё говорит о том, что языки надо хотя бы немного знать, тогда можно будет во многом разобраться. Если не получается изучить сам язык, то хотя бы знать некоторые слова.

Ведь во всех языках есть всякого рода заимствования, которые нам приходится часто употреблять в речи. Это нам кажется, что слово наше, а на самом деле оно иностранное.

И когда глубже изучить смысл этого слова, то мы можем с удивлением заметить, что не всегда оно соответствует тому значению, которое мы придаём ему в нынешнее время.

Хотя бывает и так, что слово и по сей день не потеряло своего начального значения.

Основатель империи Ашан — Жерар Мюлье. Он родился в 1931 году во Франции в городе Рубе в семье Жерара и Мари Мюлье-Кавруа.

Их семья с начала ХХ века довольно успешно занималась производством пряжи, а после Второй Мировой войны ушла в розничную торговлю.

Молодой Жерар, бросив учёбу в университете, стремился стать успешным бизнесменом, инвестором. Он открыл магазин и полностью отдался работе.

Но первый год его карьеры стал провальным, несмотря на финансовую поддержку со стороны отца.

Жерар Мюлье — старший — дал сыну ещё одну возможность проявить себя, теперь уже в семейном бизнесе, и тот, наконец, начал оправдывать надежды.

Переломным моментом карьеры стала поездка в США на семинар по розничной торговле. Оттуда он привёз свежую идею – создание супермаркета. Семья отнеслась с недоверием к этому замыслу, поэтому Жерар был вынужден искать партнёра на стороне.

Супермаркет — новая бизнес идея

В 1961 году Мюлье вместе с промышленником Мишелем Сегаром открыл первый во Франции супермаркет — Auchan. Но молодые бизнесмены допустили много ошибок и понесли большие убытки. Отец дал последний шанс Жерару, поставив жёсткие условия – три года на то, чтобы достичь успеха.

«Ашан» в России

Первый гипермаркет «Ашан» в России был открыт 28 августа 2002 года в Московской области. В настоящее время (сентябрь 2008 года) в стране существует 30 гипермаркетов французской компании (в Москве и Московской области, Нижегородской и Ленинградской областях, Екатеринбурге, в Краснодаре, Самаре, Ростове-на-Дону, Новосибирске.

В декабре 2007 года «Ашан» заключил договор с турецкой компанией Рамстор». Согласно достигнутому соглашению «Ашан» приобрёл в собственность 1 гипермаркет, а на 13 магазинов получил долгосрочные права аренды. После сделки был проведён ребрендинг, в результате которого магазины из «Рамстор» были переименованы в «Ашан-Сити». [2]

Что означает название сети магазинов «Ашан»?

Не обязательно подбирать хорошее название в китайском стиле, хотя в этом не может быть особых проблем учитывая растущую популярность восточной культуры. Можно взять просто красивое и подходящее тематическое слово, но оформить его в рубленном китайском стиле. Из страшных китайских слов могу предложить такие: Кимоно, Харакири, Банзай, Хунвейбин, Ким Ир Сен, Джекки Час, Самка-Рай, или даже Сумка-Рай, Феншуй, Инь и Гек, Китай-Матай, Китайское-Качество.

Еще посоветую оформить в вашем магазине традиционные китайские надписи типа «Изготовлено завод Китай руки» посетители оценят:)

Тут все зависит от того, насколько например та же стоимость будет отличаться от других ценах в супермаркетах, а уже это и можно включить как в скрытый смысл названия, так и в прямую его формулировку. Я бы назвал магазин «Щедро, Миг, Копейка, Универсал», ну лично мне вполне нравятся именно эти названия. А если вы действительно хотите придумать хорошее название для вашего магазина и его рекламный слоган, то вы можете обратиться за предоставлением услуг нейминга.

Российское подразделение французской Auchan в январе—июне 2021 года закрыло 17 супермаркетов, сообщила в своей отчетности за первое полугодие Elo Group (ранее называлась Auchan Holding). На 30 июня 2021 года, как указано в отчетности головной компании, сеть в России насчитывала 238 точек, из которых 95 были обычными гипермаркетами и гипермаркетами меньшего по площадям городского формата «Ашан Сити», 143 — супермаркетами.

Годом ранее, в конце июня 2020 года, ретейлер в России управлял 274 точками: 62 гипермаркетами и 212 супермаркетами. Таким образом, за 12 месяцев число супермаркетов снизилось на 32,5% (часть из них могла при этом перепозиционироваться как «Ашан Сити»).

Как пояснил генеральный директор «Ашан Ритейл Россия» Иван Мартинович, закрытие 17 супермаркетов в 2021 году было связано с их неудовлетворительными результатами. Однако компания открывала в июне один супермаркет в Дедовске.

Elo Group не приводит финансовых показателей российского подразделения, однако в своей отчетности указывает, что в Центральной и Восточной Европе выручка выросла на 3%, до €14,8 млрд, в том числе благодаря очень сильным показателям в России. Сопоставимые продажи в России год к году выросли на 3%, на 66% увеличилась EBITDA и почти в три раза выросла доля онлайн-продаж, составив 4% от локальной выручки ретейлера.

У X5 Group (сети «Пятерочка», «Перекресток», «Карусель») сопоставимые продажи за первые шесть месяцев 2021 года выросли на 3,1%, у «Магнита» — на 4,7%, «Лента» снизила сопоставимые продажи на 0,7%.

Показатель EBITDA у X5 Group вырос на 7,1%, до 79 млрд руб, у «Магнита» — на 8,8%, до 57,9 млрд руб., у «Ленты» снизился — на 16,8%, до 20,6 млрд руб.

Доля онлайн-продаж у X5 Group (без учета сервиса доставки 5Post) в первом полугодии равнялась 1,9% от всей выручки ретейлера, которая превысила 1 трлн руб., подсчитал РБК. У «Магнита» на онлайн-продажи приходится менее 1% всех доходов (7,6 млрд руб. против 801,6 млрд руб.), у «Ленты» это уже 3,6% при общей выручке 218 млрд руб.

Российский «Ашан» в течение последних пяти лет снижал выручку по РСБУ. В 2020 году она у ООО «Ашан» упала на 12%, до 223,2 млрд руб. Кроме того, в прошлом году ретейлер впервые за пять лет зафиксировал чистый убыток в размере 4,8 млрд руб. против 1,1 млрд руб. чистой прибыли годом ранее.

В первом полугодии 2020 года (более поздних данных нет), по данным «InfoLine-Аналитика», рыночная доля «Ашана» снизилась до 1%, тогда как по итогам 2019 года сеть занимала 1,5% рынка. В тот год материнская компания докапитализировала российскую «дочку» на €200 млн, чтобы обеспечить ее финансовую стабильность.

Стремительное снижение выручки в последние годы, как объяснял в интервью РБК бывший гендиректор российского «Ашана» Йоханнес Толай (покинул компанию в январе 2021 года), связано с тем, что ретейлер не смог подстроиться под новые экономические реалии после 2014 года: «Первая причина потери позиций — продовольственные санкции, из-за которых была потеряна часть ассортимента. Во-вторых, на рынке начал бурно развиваться формат магазина «у дома», в результате чего доля супермаркетов и гипермаркетов уменьшается».

На показателях также сказывались коррупционные схемы, внедренные менеджментом: в марте 2020 года стало известно, что из-за них ретейлер ежегодно терял около 2–3% оборота, или €80–100 млн. Создание комитета по внутреннему контролю за соответствием деятельности компании и ее сотрудников законодательству было одним из первых решений Толая, после того как он возглавил ретейлера в ноябре 2019 года.

В текущем году российский «Ашан» не собирался открывать новых магазинов. Программа модернизации гипермаркетов сети предполагает сокращение их площадей, рассказывал «Ведомостям» президент «Ашана» Филипп Брошар. Высвободившиеся помещения компания предложит другим ретейлерам для открытия небольших магазинов.
