Early lifeEdit

Dima Bilan was born as Viktor Belan in Ust-Dzheguta in the autonomous republic Karachay-Cherkessia in a mixed family of Tatar, Karachay and Russian heritage.[4] Bilan’s father was born in Kabardino-Balkaria and his mother in Tatarstan. After having briefly lived in Tatarstan as a child, Bilan’s family relocated to Maysky in Kabardino-Balkaria.[5]

Bilan started playing bayan in the fifth class of school and participated in different music contests as a child. He became interested in music as he enjoyed singing during school and started to write letters to the Gnessin Musical College, asking them for entrance requirements. Although the musical college did not respond to his writings, he still went to the auditions and managed to enroll.[5] Between 2000 and 2003, he specialised in classical singing. Afterwards, he enrolled at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts, where he studied acting. At the time, Bilan lived at an apartment of an acquainted family. He financed his studies while working as a nighttime stock clerk in a shoe store.[6]

CareerEdit

1998-2004: Early career, New Wave and first albumsEdit

«1998 came about (…) I already studied in the eleventh grade, but I had not graduated yet. During the Winter, I travelled to Moscow and I wrote in my diary [the lyrics of Meladze’s «Vera»]: ‘To the north, to the north, goes the train from nowhere to Moscow. The conductor sleeps, the drunken neighbours sleep.’. It was true that my neighbours were drunk, it was a couchette car. I was writing and writing and thought: this is exactly how my life is going now. I wrote five pages about it. It helped me a lot back then.»[7]

Dima Bilan

Bilan started his music career during school. He regularly performed at school parties and for guests at home. He idolised Valeriy and Konstantin Meladze in his teen years.[8] In 1995, he first performed at a televised music contest, singing Valeriy Meladze’s «Aktrisa».[9] Meladze’s 1997 single «Vera» especially became important to Bilan.[10]

In 1998, he first travelled to Moscow to participate in a children’s music contest. He received a diploma from Iosif Kobzon, who was the chairman of the jury.[11] After moving to Moscow to studying at Gnessin, Bilan started recording his first songs. His first music video «Osen'» was released in late 2000. He performed his first music video under the pseudonym Dima Belan.[12]

Although Bilan studied to become an opera singer, he quickly found himself bored with is coursework and dreamt of becoming a pop singer. Via a classmate, he met Yuri Aizenshpis, who saw potential in Bilan.[13] Bilan then officially started performing under the pseudonym «Dima Bilan», taking both the first name and surname of his grandfather.[14]

In August 2002, Bilan participated in the first edition of New Wave. At the end of the contest, he finished in fourth place.[15] On the last night of the competition, he premiered his first commercial single «Boom».

After New Wave, Bilan released a music video for «Boom». In 2003, Bilan released his debut album Ya nochnoy huligan, which became popular in Russia and was received well among critics. As a result, he performed its eponymous single «Ya nochnoy huligan» at the 2003 edition of Pesnya goda. However, Bilan’s big break came with the release of the ballad «Na beregu neba», which peaked at #2 at the TopHit radio charts.[16] The subsequent album Na beregu neba became one of the best-selling albums in Russia of 2004, receiving a gold certification.[17]

2005-2008: Eurovision participations, «Believe» and brief international breakthroughEdit

Enjoying large success in his native Russia, Bilan was signed up by his producer Aizenshpis to compete at Russia’s Eurovision Song Contest 2005’s national selection. With the English-language track «Not That Simple», Bilan was the favourite to win the selection. However, he eventually finished second behind Natalia Podolskaya despite being on top of the televoting for most of the final.[18] The Russian version of the song, titled «Ty dolzhna ryadom byt'» became the 21st most-played track on Russian radio in 2005.[19]

In mid-March 2006, Bilan was chosen internally by Russian broadcaster Channel One to represent Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens, Greece. Out of 37 participating countries, Bilan took second place with the dark pop song «Never Let You Go», equalling one of Russia’s best ever showing at Eurovision — Alsou’s «Solo» was runner-up back in the 2000 contest.

In September 2006, for second year in a row, Dima Bilan won Artist of the Year and Song of the Year at MTV Russian Music Awards. On 2 November Bilan represented Russia at MTV EMA in Copenhagen.

On 15 November 2006 Bilan received award for Best Selling Russian Artist and performed at the World Music Awards in London along with Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nelly Furtado and Bob Sinclair.

In February 2007, Bilan started to record his first international album in English in Los Angeles, Miami and in Philadelphia in collaboration with producers Jim Beanz and Ryan Tedder. One of the new tracks will be a duet with Nelly Furtado.[needs update]

Also in 2007 he premiered the first single from his new album — Number One Fan. According to Russian and Eastern European radio airplay chart, Number One Fan topped the charts for eight weeks. Video for this song[20] was shot in London by famous British director Trudy Bellinger who has also made videos for acts including Girls Aloud, Sugababes and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

On 4 October, Bilan premiered his second single from the forthcoming album, Amnesia, at the MTV Russia Music Awards 2007. During this show, Bilan won three awards, for Best Performer, Best Song and — for the third consecutive year — Best Artist.

On 20 February, Bilan went to Miami and recorded a few tracks for his Spanish album with famous producer Rudy Perez. The Spanish album will include[needs update] a duet with Nelly Furtado and a Spanish version of his first international single «Number One Fan.»[21]

In 2008, Bilan once again represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade with the song «Believe», accompanied by Hungarian violinist Edvin Marton and Russian olympic and three-time world champion figure skater Evgeni Plushenko. On 24 May 2008, Bilan won first place in the contest, receiving 272 points and seven twelves. His victory’s integrity was questioned by Ukraine’s officials later in May.[22] The following years, the trio performed at various ice shows, among them the inaugural 2010 edition of the Fantasy on Ice show in Fukui.[23]: chpt. 5

2009–2010Edit

During 2009 Bilan has continued with concerts and he also performed during the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, before handing over the title of Eurovision Song Contest winner to Alexander Rybak of Norway.

In 2010 Dima recorded a demo version of the song «White Nights», which would be competing in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, but he did not enter the contest saying that it would be too soon to return to the contest after just 2 years after his win at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008.

In the Summer of 2010, Bilan produced and starred in the short film Театр Абсурда (Theatre of the Absurd, written and directed by Maxim Apriatin and based upon Bilan’s song Он хотел (He Wanted To). In the film, Bilan performs monologues in which he shares his opinion on the moral values of the people who live in the Russian capital, as well as quotations from Ecclesiastes, and scraps of the diary of Jim Morrison. The film was released on the Internet in late 2010.[24][25][26]

In December 2012, Bilan signed an open letter attacking the author of a St. Petersburg bill against homosexual propaganda, along with pop stars like Philipp Kirkorov and Valery Syutkin.[citation needed]

Also, Dima Bilan appeared in the Eurosong 2013 — a MAD show (the national selection of Greece) as a guest, along with other 5 Eurovision winners, which include Ruslana, Marija Šerifović, Alexander Rybak, Helena Paparizou and Vicky Leandros, in order to choose the artist and the song that would have represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö.[citation needed]

However, Bilan’s big break came with the release of the ballad «Na beregu neba», which peaked at #2 at the TopHit radio charts.[16] The subsequent album Na beregu neba became one of the best-selling albums in Russia of 2004, receiving a gold certification.[17]

2005-2008: Eurovision participations, «Believe» and brief international breakthrough[edit]

Dima Nikolayevich Bilan[1] (Russian: Ди́ма Никола́евич Била́н; born Viktor Nikolayevich Belan, Russian: Ви́ктор Никола́евич Бела́н; 24 December 1981) is a Russian singer, songwriter and actor. He represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with «Never Let You Go», finishing second, and he won the contest in 2008 in Belgrade, with the song «Believe». He has had several Russian number one hit records. He is sometimes referred to as «Russia’s Iglesias» due to his similarity to the Spanish singer. In January 2023, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Dima for his support of 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[2][3]

Early life[edit]

Career[edit]

1998-2004: Early career, New Wave and first albums[edit]

2005-2008: Eurovision participations, «Believe» and brief international breakthrough[edit]

In 2008, Bilan released three albums — in Russian, English and Spanish.[needs update] He also released an English album in 81 countries in co-operation with Interscope Records (Universal Group). He worked on his English album, with some tracks produced by Jim Beanz and Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic).[needs update] Also his new Spanish album included a duet with Nelly Furtado.[citation needed]

2009–2010[edit]

  Biography

When Bilan was two years old, his family moved to his grandmother’s place in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny in Tatarstan and then to the Greek island Santorini, where he lived for 3 years. When he was six years old, his family moved back to the Soviet Union, to Kabardino-Balkaria where he went to school with his sister. He took part in morning performances, recited poems and sang songs.

Bilan graduated from Gnesins Musical College as a classical vocal performer. He made his debut when he reached fourth place at the Russian/Latvian festival «New Wave» in 2002. In 2003, Bilan released his debut album titled Nochnoy Huligan (Night Hooligan). In 2004, the reissue of the album came out including 20 songs, 16 of the original + four new tracks: Бессердечная (Heartless), В последний раз (The last time), Остановите музыку (Stop the music), Тёмная ночь (Dark Night). Also in 2004 he released his successful single «Na beregu neba» («At The Sky’s Shore») which was also the title of his second album.

  2005 — 2006

Produced by the late Yury Aizenshpis, a Russian music mogul famous for his work with Viktor Tsoi in the Soviet Union, Bilan attempted to reach Eurovision previously with the song «Not That Simple» in 2005, finishing in second place at the Russian national selection. The video for the Russian version of the song was reputably the most expensive in the history of Russia’s music industry. In December 2005, Bilan received two golden gramophones for the song «Ty dolzjna ryadom byt'» (The Russian version of «Not That Simple», actually meaning «You should be beside me») in Saint Petersburg and Almaty. During shootings of «Noviye pyesny o glavnom» («New songs about the main things») he received the grand prize of the First channel from the professional jury. Bilan became Showbusiness Man of the Year because the most voters gave their voices for him according to the version of Rambler. At the end of a year he accepted an invitation from an American agency to record tracks for the musical Peter Pan. On 14 March 2006, Bilan took part in «Zolotaya sharmanka» («Golden street organ») of «International Music Awards» in Kiev where he was honored as «Singer of the Year».

In 2005, also was released on the official compilation of clips «Ti, tolko ti» (You, only you) in that except the clips included presentations album «Ya Nochnoy Huligan» (I’m a Night Hooligan) and «Na beregu neba» (At The Sky’s Shore), also in the collection include additional tracks not included in these albums «Ya ne zabudu» (I will not forget) and a cover version of quadrupeds melodies «Caruso» a presentation of «Ya Nochnoy Huligan» (I’m a Night Hooligan), «7 Dney» (Seven Days) organizing presentations «Na beregu neba» (At The Sky’s Shore)

In late 2005, released the single «New Year with a new line» contains 3 tracks New Year with a new line (feat group Neposedi), Between the sky and heaven and New Year with a new line remix.

Bilan scored 248 points — 44 points behind the winning song «Hard Rock Hallelujah» by Finland’s Lordi — and received the maximum 12 points from a total of seven countries: Armenia, Belarus, Finland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine. The only countries to not award Bilan any points were Monaco and Switzerland.

Bilan’s stage performance included two dancing ballerinas and a white piano covered in red rose petals, from which a ghost-like female figure emerged halfway through the song. Bilan wore a white vest with the number representing his place in the contest’s running order — 13 and 10 in the semi-final and final respectively. Due to Russia’s poor result the previous year, Bilan had to qualify for the final at the semi-final on 18 May. He qualified in the top ten there (finishing third with 217 points) and moved to the final.

In July 2006, Bilan was one of the four artists who took part in the biggest musical event in Russia of 2006 — «The Red Summer» show in Red Square in Moscow, where he performed on stage with Shakira, The Black Eyed Peas and t.A.T.u.

His performance of Eurovision single Never Let You Go at WMAs was broadcast on Channel 4 in UK and 130 more countries, including United States.

  2007 — 2008

In February 2007 Bilan started to record his first international album in English in Los Angeles, Miami and in Philadelphia in collaboration with producers Jim Beanz and Ryan Tedder. One of the new tracks will be a duet with Nelly Furtado.

Also in 2007 he premiered the first single from his new album — Number One Fan. According to Russian and Eastern European radio airplay chart, Number One Fan topped the charts for 8 weeks. Video for this song [1] was shot in London by famous British director Trudy Bellinger, who has also made videos for acts including Girls Aloud, Sugababes and Sophie Ellis Bextor).

On 4 October, Bilan premiered his second single from the forthcoming album, Amnesia, at the MTV Russia Music Awards 2007. During this show, Bilan won three most prestigious awards for Best Performer, Best Song and — for the third consecutive year — Best Artist.

He is working on his English album, with some tracks produced by Jim Beanz and Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic).[dated info] Also his new Spanish album will include a duet with Nelly Furtado.[citation needed]

On 20 February, Bilan went to Miami and recorded a few tracks for his Spanish album with famous producer Rudy Perez. The Spanish album will include[dated info] a duet with Nelly Furtado and a Spanish version of his first international single «Number One Fan» [2]

His victory’s integrity was questioned by Ukraine’s officials later in May.[3]

With this victory, he became the fifth artist in the history of the contest to reach both the positions of winner and runner-up (After Lys Assia, Gigliola Cinquetti, Linda Martin and Elisabeth Andreassen) and the first male performer to do so.

In 2008, Bilan won two awards from Muz TV: «Best male artist» and «Best ringtone» for the song «Nevozmozhnoe vozmozno». Dima also won the Best Russian Act award at MTV Europe Music Awards.

Also in 2008, Bilan finally changed his official name to Dima Bilan. Although Dima is a diminutive from Dmitry, he preferred the former, diminutive form, «Dima», as official. The name change followed Bilan’s conflict with his producer Yuri Aisenshpitz’s heirs, who claimed the rights on this stage name. Making it his official name would help to avoid any claimants.

Bilan performed his 2008 Eurovision-winning song «Believe» in the interval act at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Limassol, Cyprus.

  2009 — 2010

The film was released on the Internet in late 2010.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

On May 25, 2010, Anastacia recorded a duet with Dima Bilan in Los Angeles which was released in Russia first and later in the rest of Europe. They’ve presented the song «Safety» for the first time during the Muz-TV Music Awards show on June 11 in Moscow, Anastacia has also perform a song alone.[10]

  2012-present

Bilan has recently competed at Russia’s Eurovision 2012 song selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan. He entered the competition with T.A.T.u. member Yulia Volkova with their song «Back To Her Future». They finished in 2nd place with 29.25 points from the winning entry, «Party for Everybody» by Russian ethno-pop band Buranovskiye Babushki who was 38.51 points ahead of them.[11] In the contest itself, he was joined by Alexander Rybak, Lena, Ell and Nikki and Marija Šerifović for the interval act of the second semi-final.

Go easy on him Debbie.

He’s new.

Oh, he is not new. Where’d you get that top, Debbie?

Чупа-Чупс в одной руке.

Go easy on him Debbie.

He’s new.

Oh, he is not new. Where’d you get that top, Debbie?

Твои деньги не такие, как у всех?

Ди, мы не единственные черные здесь.

Я не о том говорю. Я про то, где мы….

Your money good, right?

Dee, we ain’t the only black people in here.

It ain’t what I’m talking about.

Но я убил её не из-за денег а потому, что она избивала Жана.

Она била его, она избивала его так жестоко.

Ах, ты сволочь!

But I didn’t kill her for money but because she was wailing on Jean.

She was beating him, beating him so viciously.

You scum!

And we look like her.

Ќе бойс€.

Nothing to worry about.

We need to ask you a few questions.

I’m trying to help you. You’ve got to believe me!

Но Доусон здесь, он всегда был добор ко мне.

Знаете, даже когда я била его, потому что он знал, что это не то, что я хотела бы.

Он знал, что это только пьяные бредни, так?

But Dawson here, he was always real good to me.

You know, even when I beat him because he knew that I didn’t mean it.

He knew it was just the alcohol talking, right?

У меня три добермана.

Если бы я не била их по яйцам, я бы ни одно дело не смогла завершить.

Ну, он скоро уже вроде закончит.

I got three Dobermans.

If I didn’t kick them in the balls regularly, I’d never get anything done.

But he’s gotta be close to finishing by now.

Оставайся здесь и выпей.

Я встречу Била и мы придем сюда.

Бил!

You stay here and have your drink.

I’ll get bill, and we’ll be back.

Bill!

Неприятности не намечались.

Но, затем, я обнаружила как Пэт мучала Била, и не смогла пройти через это.

Она мучила его так безжалостно.

It wasn’t going to hurt anybody.

But after i’d found out how… How pat had treated bill, I couldn’t go through with it.

She hurt him so terribly.

Скажите, что ты там делал?

Искал Димо, потому что он убил Quebo.

Ох, дорогой мой.

Say, what were you doing there?

Looking for Dimo, which has killed Quebo.

Oh dear!

Бог с вами, Синьор Продавец рыбы «.

Спасибо, Димо!

Дима, не волнуйся!

Надо дать следователю в лапу!

Start drying crackers!

Dima, don’t worry! We need to bribe him!

Bribe him? !

Странно, что Котолай не пришел, увидится со мной, и я хочу удивить его.

Будь осторожен, Франциско.

It is strange that Cotolay has not come to me these days, and I want to surprise him.

Hey, if I ask the Lord to let me hunt Quebo the deer, you think I will grant it?

If so desired, hunt him soon, Cotolay, lest Dimo anticipate.

Who’s Dimo?

Скажи мне.

Это был Димо, правильно?
