«Gangsta’s Paradise» is a single by American rapper Coolio. Interpolating Stevie Wonder’s 1976 song «Pastime Paradise», and featuring American singer L.V., the single was released on August 1, 1995.^[3] Certified Platinum in October, the song was included on Coolio’s second album Gangsta’s Paradise in November 1995.

The song was the number one biggest-selling single of 1995 on U.S. Billboard.^[4] In 2008, it was ranked number 38 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.^[5] NME listed the song at number 100 in their ranking of «100 Best Songs of the 1990s» in 2012.^[6] Coolio was awarded a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance, two MTV Video Music Awards for Best Rap Video and Best Video from a Film and a Billboard Music Award for the song/album. The song was voted as the best single of the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics’ poll.

The song has sold over five million copies in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany.^[3]^[7]^[8] Coolio performed this song live at the 1995 Billboard Music Awards with L.V. and Wonder, and at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards with L.V.

Background and writing[edit]

The artists co-wrote the song with their producer Doug Rasheed, with Stevie Wonder receiving writing credits for the sampling of his song «Pastime Paradise» from his 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life.

The song begins with a line from Psalm 23:4: «As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death», but then diverges with: «I take a look at my life and realize there’s nothing left.» Adding to some of the religious overtones are choral vocals in the background.^[9] Coolio freestyled the first couple of lines, with the rest of the lyrics coming to him quickly in one sitting. He would later claim that the song ultimately came from a source outside himself, saying: «‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ wanted to be born; it wanted to come to life, and it chose me as the vessel.»^[2]

Due to the sampling of Stevie Wonder’s music, «Gangsta’s Paradise» is one of the few Coolio tracks that did not contain any profanity, as Wonder did not appreciate his song being paired with profanity. Coolio said, «I had a few vulgarities…and he wasn’t with that. So I changed it. Once he heard it, he thought it was incredible.»^[10]

Critical reception[edit]

Bill Lamb from About.com described the song as «riveting and atmospheric».^[11] James Masterton for Dotmusic noted «the undoubted brilliance» of the track.^[12] David Browne from Entertainment Weekly said it «may be the bleakest tune ever to top the pop singles chart.» He added, «With its ghostly choir and lyrics about a gun-toting 23-year-old who kneels in the streetlight wondering if he’ll live to see 24, it examines the abyss with journalistic coolness.»^[13] Tom Ewing of Freaky Trigger declared it as «complete pop greatness».^[14] Mike Wood from Idolator called it a «rap rhapsody».^[15] Pan-European magazine Music & Media commented: «Last year, this rapper hit paydirt with a reworking of Lakeside’s Fantastic Voyage. This time around, he pulls off the same trick with this tall tale founded on Stevie Wonder’s Pastime Paradise. Unlike the original, which surprisingly never was a hit, this one was a US number 1 and has every chance of succeeding in Europe.»^[16] A reviewer from Music Week rated it four out of five, adding: «An infectious release from Grammy-nominated rapper that challenges the assumed form of the genre. Number one in the US and could do big things here.»^[17] The magazine’s Alan Jones deemed it «a brooding and menacing track».^[18]

Chart performance[edit]

The single reached number one in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand, making it Coolio’s most successful single. In Australia, the song stayed at No. 1 for 14 weeks, a record that would only be broken 22 years later by Ed Sheeran’s «Shape of You».^[19] Following Coolio’s appearance on Celebrity Big Brother 6, it re-entered the UK singles chart peaking at No. 31. In the United Kingdom, «Gangsta’s Paradise» is the first rap single to sell over a million copies.

In the United States, the single spent twelve weeks in the top two of the Billboard Hot 100, of which three were spent at No. 1 and nine at No. 2. The song was certified triple platinum by the RIAA on February 23, 1996, indicating 3 million copies sold.^[3] It has sold a further 1.8 million downloads in the US in the digital era as of September 2017.^[20] As of September 2022, the songs has sold 1.9 million downloads in US and has accumulated 763.1 million streams.^[21]

Following Coolio’s death on September 28, 2022, «Gangsta’s Paradise» debuted two days later at number 5 on the UK Official Singles Sales Chart Top 100,^[22] and reentered the Official Top 100 Singles Chart on 7 October 2022 at number 55.^[23]

Music video[edit]

The accompanying music video for the song was directed by Antoine Fuqua and featured Michelle Pfeiffer reprising her earlier role in Dangerous Minds.^[24] Initially Coolio was concerned with the video’s treatment stating, «I wanted some low-riders and some shit in it; I was trying to take it ‘hood’.» Despite this he trusted Fuqua and was ultimately pleased with the final result.^[2]

For the music video, Coolio won the Best Rap Video at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1996.

The music video hit one billion YouTube views in July 2022.^[25]

In 1996, «Gangsta’s Paradise» was named Best Rap 12-inch at the International Dance Music Awards in Miami.^[26]

In 2008, it was ranked number 38 on VH1’s «100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop».^[5]

In 2019, Billboard placed it at number 20 in their ranking of «Billboard‘s Top Songs of the ’90s».^[27] Same year, Stacker placed it at number 19 in their list of «Best 90s pop songs».^[28]

In July 2020, digital publication The Pudding carried out a study on the most iconic songs from the ’90s and songs that are most known by Millennials and the people of Generation Z. «Gangsta’s Paradise» was the song with the twelfth highest recognisability rate.^[29]

Parodies and covers[edit]

There are several parodies of the song, including «Amish Paradise» by «Weird Al» Yankovic, which was released the following year, reaching number 53 on the U.S. chart. Coolio claimed that he did not give permission for the parody, which led to disagreements between the two. Yankovic claimed that he had been told Coolio had given the go-ahead through his record label, and apologized. Because of this incident, Yankovic now seeks approval for song parodies through the artists themselves, rather than communicating through intermediaries. Coolio himself said in a 2011 interview that he had since «apologized to him (Yankovic)»,^[30] further stating in a Rolling Stone retrospective that objecting to the parody «was probably one of the least smart things I’ve done over the years.»^[2]

L.V. released a solo version of the single in 1996 on his debut album, I Am L.V. This version did not feature Coolio, and featured additional lyrics written by L.V. himself, with rap lyrics written by Scarface and Dani Blooms.

In 1996, the song was covered by Battery for the electro-industrial various artists compilation Operation Beatbox and their 1996 album, Distance.^[31] American post-hardcore band In Fear And Faith covered the song in 2008. Austrian melodic death metal band Artas covered the song in 2008 on the album The Healing. In 2014, post-hardcore band Falling in Reverse covered the song for the compilation album Punk Goes 90s Vol. 2. The video included an appearance by Coolio. In 2015, Postmodern Jukebox produced a version in a 1920s jazz style. That same year, New Zealand hard rock band Like a Storm covered the song on their second studio album, Awaken the Fire.^[32]

Gangsta’s Paradise (1995) – история песни

Трек Gangsta’s Paradise навсегда прославил рэпера Кулио!

История создания

«Gangsta’s Paradise» так сильно отличалась от ранних работ Кулио, что поначалу представители лейбла даже забили тревогу! Они решили, что новый шедевр рэпера огорчит преданных фанатов… К их большому удивлению и несказанному счастью, всё обернулось с точностью наоборот!

Эта история успеха лишний раз подтверждает тот факт, что даже самые матёрые продюсеры не всегда способны распознать коммерческий потенциал песни… Ну а теперь непосредственно о самом треке, который не просто сделал Кулио одним из популярнейших рэперов в мире, но и повлиял на дальнейшее развитие хип-хоп музыки!

Трек про «Гангстерский рай» — результат слаженной работы Дуга Рашида, Ларри Сандерса и самого Кулио. Наверняка многие заметили, что в основе хип-хоп-хита лежит сэмпл из «Pastime Paradise» Стиви Уандера… Это действительно так. Американский соул-певец даже указан соавтором!

Позже Дуг Рашид вспоминал, что именно вдохновило его на столь смелый шаг:

«…В ту пору мы с Полом, менеджером Кулио, снимали вместе квартиру… У нас с ним была огромная коллекция дисков, которые мы частенько прослушивали с целью найти годный сэмпл! «Songs in the Key of Life» Стиви Уандера был моим любимым альбомом… И вот как-то раз я вырезал сэмпл из «Pastime Paradise», а Пол с восхищением произнёс: «О Боже, это прекрасно!»»

Потрудиться над треком был приглашён и Ларри Сандерс, более известный как L.V. Об этом периоде он вспоминал следующее:

«…Напев я заменил на «Gangsta’s Paradise». Кстати: вокальные партии тоже исполнил я! Правда, для этого мне пришлось записать их от сопрано до тенора и баса… Но результат того стоил!»

«…Когда трек был готов, мы с Дугом начали думать, кто сможет исполнить его должным образом… Первоначально я видел в этой роли своего друга Big Prodeje. Но когда я предложил ему песню, он сказал: «Чувак, тебе нужно самому это сделать!» Я ответил: «Нет, мне нужен рэпер!» Он наотрез отказался, и я вспомнил про Кулио…»

Начинающий рэпер с радостью согласился! Но… для этого требовалось написать слова. Как можно судить — Кулио блестяще справился с поставленной перед ним задачей! Позже он вспоминал:

«Я просто сел и начал писать. Я был в восторге! Прослушав мелодию припева, я обрёл вдохновение… Слова складывались во фразы сами собой, точно так же, как и вырывались из головы! На каждый куплет у меня ушло не более 15 минут. Порой мне кажется, что это было божественное озарение извне… Эта вещь желала появиться на свет, и я помог ей в этом! Она должна была прийти в этот мир, и я стал для неё сосудом. Это очень круто…»

Когда демо-версия была готова, Пол Стюарт разослал её по престижным киностудиям. Трек приглянулся продюсерам «Плохих парней», однако стороны не смогли прийти к устраивающей всех цене… В конечном итоге композиция стала саундтреком к триллеру «Опасные умы» c Мишель Пфайффер в главной роли.

Фильм был полностью готов к выходу на большие экраны, а сама песня — успешно записана… Казалось бы — всё идёт своим чередом, и всё круто! Но… оставался главный вопрос: уладить трудности со Стиви Уандером.

В своём интервью Кулио рассказывал, насколько дорого ему обошлась эта песня:

«Когда Уандер услышал эту песню, он сказал: «Никогда и ни за что я не допущу, чтобы моё произведение было использовано для какого-то там гангстерского трека!» Его отказ создавал нам крупные проблемы… Так сложилось, что моя супруга была знакома с братом Стиви. Через него она созвонилась с Уандером и организовала встречу… Её удалось убедить его. В свою очередь Уандер выдвинул два условия: я должен был убрать ругательства, и… 95% издательских прав! Если бы я только знал об этом условии… скорее всего, я бы не согласился!»

Релиз и достижения

К счастью, первое время Кулио не был в курсе второго условия!

Трек с красноречивым названием «Гангстерский рай» увидел свет под конец лета 1995 года! Песня была выпущена полноценным синглом из одноимённого альбома Coolio.

Всего за несколько недель «Gangsta’s Paradise» стала топ-лидером Соединённых Штатов, Великобритании, Австралии… Нисколько не удивительно, что дальнейшая история хита исполнена прекрасных достижений, престижных премий и лестной критики!

Сегодня композиция «Gangsta’s Paradise» дополняет собой парочку популярных рейтингов, таких как «Величайшие песни всех времён» и «100 величайших песен хип-хопа».

Самому Кулио трек принёс не только популярность, но и премию «Грэмми» в номинации «Лучший рэп-исполнитель»!

Музыкальный клип

Уже после выхода кинокартины «Опасные умы», её продюсер Джерри Брукхаймер настоял на съёмках музыкального клипа! Ему также удалось убедить Мишель Пфайффер сняться в видео. Позже Кулио пошутит на этот счёт:

«Наверное, Пфайффер никогда ещё не окружало столько чёрных!»

Режиссёром клипа выступил Антуан Фукуа. Позже Кулио вспоминал:

«Первоначально я вообще не понимал концепции Антуана… Откровенно говоря — она меня пугала. К счастью, он оказался куда более проницательным парнем, чем я думал! Я не совсем разделял его видение, но полностью доверял ему…»

И, как оказалось, не зря! Впоследствии клип «Gangsta’s Paradise» завоевал сразу несколько наград MTV Video Music Awards! Самое любопытное во всей этой истории то, что на церемонии вручения Стиви Уандер и рэпер Кулио исполнили этот замечательный трек дуэтом!

Gangsta’s Paradise – классика гангстерского рэпа 90-х и исторический хит дуэта Coolio и L.V. В 1995 году эта песня вышла на альбоме с таким же названием. Все началось с продюсера Дуга Рашида. К моменту подготовки Gangsta’s Paradise Coolio уже был достаточно популярным исполнителем и выпустил альбом. Coolio is saying he realizes that that there is nothing left for him in life. Because he has been messing around, wasting his life and doing nothing productive for so long that even the one person, his mother, that always believes he’s going to be successful and thinks nothing but the best of him, has given up hope on him. She was the last person who would ever give up on her son, but his behavior and lifestyle means that he’s beyond saving – likely leading only to him being behind bars or buried six feet underground.

Now that he has disappointed his mother and torn his relationship with her, Coolio feels a sense of emptiness. He feels abandoned by his own family and all the people who have ever loved him. He no longer has anything in his life to make him feel happy.
But I ain’t never crossed a man that …:
Leading on from the last line, his justification for his actions, although he and his mother recognise he’s beyond saving, is that who provoked his reaction never went unjustified.

Being “treated like a ‘punk’” means a lot of things. It could mean that he got crossed or a gun pointed at his face or he got snitched on. At least one of those things deserve immediate retaliation of certain death to the other party.

He has the mentality, because of his lifestyle and environment, that you can’t be pushed around when someone tests you. If someone over steps their boundaries or acts out of line, then there are consequences. This implies he lives around people that are criminals and do bad deeds – either hangs out with them or they are the type of people in his neighbourhood.

There was always a reason for him getting into fights and dealing with the situation. To survive where he’s from, it was necessary to put people in their place if they behaved in a way which is asking for trouble.

When a criminal kills someone, and the dead body is found, the police get informed, and they come to the “scene of the crime” as they say, and try to find out who did it. They do a number of things to try and find out what happened, depending on the case. It is not clear to the general public how they operate, but this is one thing specifically that they do in a time like this.

And that is the iconic “draw a line of chalk or special tape around the entire body”. They use chalk if the body is on the street, concrete, or something similar to that. And tape if the body is on the ground, grass or something like that. The outline of the chalk or tape, provides context for photographs of the crime scene, and assists investigators in preserving the evidence.

Modern investigators almost never have to use chalk or tape as outlines at crime scenes anymore. But because of music, visual arts, literature, or anything in pop culture that has to do with a crime investigation by the police, people still think that to this day.

An “educated fool” is someone who has been taught useless things, or misled to believe false things. It’s a possible double meaning because “fool” can also be used as a general term to refer to you or someone else in a similar context to his earlier use of “loc” from the first verse:

Furthermore, “educated fool” may be called an oxymoron.

It could also mean he’s gone through the mandatory education system but hasn’t really gotten much out of it and finds the involvement in the streets with making money more appealing and too tempting to resist. Likely because of the false sense of reality TV shows and movies gave him.

Furthermore, the line could mean that even though one is educated there is much more to learn.

In stark contrast to the main verses of the song, where Coolio seems to revel in the drugs and gang violence embedded in his culture, LV realizes that through the conflicts and shootings, everybody loses. This, along with the hook is a spin-off of the hook from Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise” rewritten in L.V.’s own words.

“They” (teachers, cops, politicians, religious leaders, society in general, take your pick) say that Coolio – a stand-in for all gang bangers who turned to a life of crime after being failed by the system since the moment they were born – needs to learn to lead a legitimate life as a productive, law-abiding citizen, but if they don’t understand the circumstances he was born into, raised in, and still lives in, how can they possibly help him, let alone expect him to do so himself?
As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke:
Coolio is alluding to his own personal connection to these violent acts; he sees himself to be as much a part of the systemic violence as the physical properties of the crime.

Focus on the smoke specifically may be a reference to the temporal nature of his existence, comparing his circumstances to the smoke which vanishes after a short time.

Coolio sees himself in the smoke because he knows his time is coming sooner or later, just like the guy he just offed.

Life in the streets is very dangerous. Death strikes so unexpectedly because of the heavy gangs and the high crime rates. The young age of 24 illustrates how people die because of unnatural factors as a result of their lifestyle. Coolio is living in such dangerous conditions that he is unsure whether he will even survive another year.

In 2Pac’s song “Pain” from 1994 (a year before this song), 2Pac similarly ended his first verse with the question “Will I live to be 23?”
