Hummer (stylized as HUMMER) is a brand of pickups and SUVs that was first marketed in 1992 when AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 Humvee.[1] Although discontinued in 2010, Hummer returned as a sub-brand of GMC in 2020. In 1998, General Motors (GM) purchased the brand name from AM General and marketed three vehicles: the original Hummer H1, based on the military Humvee, as well as the new H2 and H3 models that were based on smaller, civilian-market GM platforms.

By 2008, Hummer’s viability in the economic downturn was questioned. Rather than being transferred to the Motors Liquidation Company as part of the GM bankruptcy in 2009, the brand was retained by GM, to investigate its sale. No final deal was made, and in 2010, Hummer dealerships began shutting down.[2][3][4]

The nameplate returned to the marketplace for the 2022 model year not as a separate make brand, but as electric pickup truck and SUV models sold under the GMC brand as the «GMC Hummer EV».[5][6] The pre-production versions of the EV began November 2021 after a $2.2 billion investment to build a variety of all-electric vehicles in GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.[7]

History[edit]

Origin[edit]

AM General had planned to sell a civilian version of its Humvee as far back as the late 1980s. Having the same structure and most mechanical components, the civilian Hummers were finished in automotive gloss paint, adding passenger car enhancements such as air conditioning, sound insulation, upgraded upholstery, stereo systems, wood trim, and convenience packages.[8] The civilian model began in part because of the persistence of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who saw an Army convoy while filming Kindergarten Cop in Oregon and began to campaign and lobby for a civilian version to be available on the market.[9]

In 1992, AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 Humvee vehicle to the public under the brand name «Hummer».[10] The first two Hummer H1s to be sold were purchased by Schwarzenegger.

GM purchase[edit]

In December 1999, AM General sold the brand name to General Motors, but continued to manufacture the vehicles.[10] GM was responsible for the marketing and distribution of all civilian Hummers produced by AM General. Shortly thereafter, GM introduced two of its own design models, the H2 and H3, and renamed the original vehicle H1. AM General continued to build the H1 until it was discontinued in 2006,[11] and was contracted by GM to produce the H2. The H3 was built in Shreveport, LA alongside the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups, with which it shared the GMT-355 platform (modified and designated GMT-345). Hummer dealership buildings featured an oversized half Quonset Hut style roof, themed to the Hummer brand’s military origins.[12]

By 2006, the Hummer began to be exported and sold through importers and distributors in 33 countries.[13] On October 10, 2006, GM began producing the Hummer H3 at its Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa for international markets.[13] The Hummers built there at first were only left-hand drive, but right-hand drive versions were added and exported to Australia and other markets.

The H2 was also assembled in Kaliningrad, Russia, by Avtotor, starting in 2006 and ending in 2009.[14] The plant produced a few hundred vehicles annually, and its output was limited to local consumption with five dealers in Russia.

On June 3, 2008, one day prior to GM’s annual shareholder meeting, Rick Wagoner, GM’s CEO at that time, said the brand was being reviewed, and had the possibility of either being sold, having the production line completely redesigned, or being discontinued.[15] This was due to the decreasing demand for large SUVs as a result of higher oil prices. Almost immediately after the announcement, a pair of Indian automakers, including Mahindra & Mahindra, expressed interest in purchasing all or part of Hummer.[16]

In April 2009, GM President Fritz Henderson stated several interested parties had approached GM regarding the Hummer business.[17]

Failed sale and shutdown[edit]

On June 1, 2009, as a part of the General Motors bankruptcy announcement, the company revealed that the Hummer brand would be discontinued. However, the following day GM announced that instead it had reached a deal to sell the brand to an undisclosed buyer.[18] After GM announced that same day that the sale was to an undisclosed Chinese company,[19] CNN and the New York Times identified the buyer of the Hummer truck unit as China-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd.[18][20][21] Later that day, Sichuan Tengzhong itself announced the deal on their own website.

On January 6, 2010, GM CEO Ed Whitacre said he hoped to close the deal with Tengzhong by the end of that month.[22] On February 1, 2010, it was announced that Sichuan and General Motors had agreed to extend the deadline until the end of February as Sichuan tried to get approval by the Chinese government.[23] It was also revealed that the price tag of the Hummer brand was $150 million.[24]

Later, on February 24, 2010, GM announced the Tengzhong deal had collapsed and the Hummer brand would soon shut down.[25] There were reports that Sichuan Tengzhong might pursue the purchase of the Hummer brand from GM by purchasing it privately through the company’s new J&A Tengzhong Fund SPC, a private equity investment fund owned by an offshore entity that was recruiting private investors to buy into its acquisition plan.[26] The financial markets posed problems for established borrowers and even more for Tengzhong, a little-known company from western China, at the same time as the potential value of the Hummer brand continued to decline given high fuel prices and weak consumer demand.[27]

The company announced it was willing to consider offers for all or part of the assets. American company Raser Technologies along with several others expressed interest in buying the company. However, on April 7, 2010, this attempt failed as well, and General Motors officially said it was shutting down the Hummer SUV brand and offering rich rebates in a bid to move the remaining 2,200 vehicles.[28][29]

After filling a rental-car fleet order, the last Hummer H3 rolled off the line at Shreveport on May 24, 2010.[30]

Revival[edit]

In mid-2019, rumors began to circulate that General Motors was considering reviving the Hummer nameplate in 2021, as the market for off-road vehicles was reaching historic levels of sales.[31] GM President Mark Ruess was asked about the possible return in the summer of 2019, and said, «I love Hummer. I don’t know. We’re looking at everything.»[31] Credibility to the earlier reporting began to solidify after the conclusion of the 2019 General Motors strike, as contract negotiations led to the commitment by GM of saving its Detroit-Hamtramck facility from closing by investing in and retooling it to build future electric trucks and SUVs; the products were to be built on GM’s upcoming «BT1» electric truck platform.[32] GM’s own documentation listed three brands as receiving products from the BT1 architecture: Cadillac (presumably an electric Cadillac Escalade), Chevrolet (Silverado EV), and a third unknown brand referred to as the «M-Brand.»[32]

Industry insiders claimed they had sources saying that the «M-Brand» was a Hummer because a revival of the brand with established name recognition would help reduce marketing costs. The Hummer revival on the BT1 platform was known internally as «Project O,» potentially named after former Chief Camaro Engineer Al Oppenheiser (the man responsible for the return of the Camaro in 2010), who was moved from Camaro development to overseeing an EV program.[33] Oppenheiser later confirmed this himself.[34] By November 2019, media reports all but confirmed that Hummer would return with two electric models, a truck and an SUV, sometime in 2021.[35] On November 21, 2019, General Motors CEO Mary Barra confirmed that GM would be releasing an electric pickup truck in the fall of 2021, but did not name the brand under which it would be built.[36]

The new Hummer line is not a standalone brand, as it was before General Motors filed for bankruptcy, but a model within GM’s GMC brand.[37]

On January 30, 2020, GM released a series of short videos revealing the return of Hummers in the form of electric SUV and truck models marketed under the GMC brand. A 30-second Super Bowl ad featured NBA superstar LeBron James. The vehicle was to be revealed on May 20, 2020, but the date was later pushed back to October 20, 2020.

The Hummer EV SUT was officially revealed on October 20, 2020, during the 2020 World Series. The Hummer EV SUV was unveiled during the NCAA Tournament Final Four on April 3, 2021.

The all-electric sub-brand of GMC will have several versions with initially only the most expensive «Edition 1» four-door pickup available followed by other models and later as an SUV.[38]

Models[edit]

Hummer H1[edit]

The first vehicle in the Hummer range was the Hummer H1, based on the Humvee. Released for the civilian market in 1992, this vehicle was designed by American Motors’ AM General subsidiary to meet U.S. Military specifications that were issued in 1979.[39] By 1982, Renault (which was partially owned by the French government) took controlling interest in AMC, and the AM General division was sold in 1983 to Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV) because US regulations barred ownership of defense contractors by foreign governments.[40] American Motors itself was acquired by Chrysler in 1987.[41] Production of H1 civilian versions continued throughout 2006.

Hummer H2[edit]

The Hummer H2 was the second vehicle in the Hummer range built in the AM General facility under contract from General Motors from 2002 to 2009. There were two variations: The H2 SUV and H2 SUT.

Hummer H3[edit]

The H3 and H3T truck were the smallest of the Hummer models and were based on the GMT355 platform shared with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon compact pickup trucks. The H3 line was produced from 2005 to 2010 by General Motors.

Concept vehicles[edit]

Hummer HX[edit]

The Hummer HX was developed in 2008 as an open-air, two-door off-road concept car, smaller than other Hummer models.

Plug-in hybrid[edit]

Raser Technologies (formerly of Utah)[42] was to use technology similar to that in the Chevrolet Volt. The company unveiled the prototype to the 2009 Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit.[43] The E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) powertrain technology, was claimed to power the vehicle for up to 40 miles (64 km) on its battery, and then a small 4-cylinder internal combustion engine would start to generate more electricity.[44]

Racing[edit]

Team Hummer Racing was created in 1993. Led by off-road racer Rod Hall, Team Hummer competed in the stock classes of both BitD and SCORE, with specialized racing shock absorbers, tires, and other modifications, along with mandatory safety equipment. Team Hummer stock-class H3 was driven by Hall who finished first in class with the H3 in the 2005 Baja 1000. Team Hummer earned 11 production-class wins at the Baja 1000.

A highly modified, two-wheel drive Hummer was raced by Robby Gordon in 2006 (did not finish), 2007 (8th place), 2009 (3rd place), 2010 (8th place), 2011 (did not finish), 2012 (disqualified), and 2013 (14th place) Dakar Rally.

Stretch limousines[edit]

The Hummer H2 has been stretched by third-party companies into a variety of limousine versions.[45] The Hummer H2 was cut behind the cab and the chassis extended to create a passenger section for 14, 16, or even 22 passengers.

Production[edit]

  • AM General Hummer H1 Assembly Plant, Mishawaka, Indiana – 500,000-square-foot plant (46,000 m2) opened 1984 to build HMMWV (HUMVEE) and began production of the H1 in 1992. Production ceased 2006, but HMMWV production continues.
  • AM General Hummer H2 Assembly Plant, Mishawaka, Indiana – 673,000-square-foot plant (62,500 m2) opened 2002. H2 production ended 2009. Plant sold to SF Motors, maker of electric vehicles, in 2017.[46]
  • General Motors South Africa Struandale Assembly Plant, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa – built in 1996, expanded to 75,625 square meters (814,000 sq ft) to build H3 models. H3 production ended 2009.
  • General Motors Shreveport Operations, Shreveport, Louisiana – in 2005, to accommodate the production of the H3, an additional 296,000 square feet (27,500 m2) was added to plant built by GM in 1981. In July 2009, GM had shut down Hummer production of the H3, but the automaker had a special fleet order from Avis Rent a Car System.[47]
  • Avtotor Kaliningrad, Russia – licensed version of H2 starting from 2006 and production ended in 2009.

Criticisms[edit]

Criticism of Hummers mirrors the criticism of SUVs in general, but to a higher degree. Specific criticisms of Hummers include:

Size
Hummers (specifically the H1 and H2) are significantly bigger than other SUVs, which can cause problems parking, driving, and fitting in a garage. Their large size may also pose a serious threat to smaller vehicles and pedestrians.[48]
Poor fuel economy
Even compared to other heavy passenger vehicles, Hummers without the diesel engine options have very poor fuel economy. Because the H2 is built to the over-8500-lb GVW, its fuel economy is neither published by the U.S. EPA nor counted toward Corporate Average Fuel Economy.[49] For example, H2 in one engine configuration averages an estimated 14 mpg‑US (17 L/100 km; 17 mpg‑imp) on the highway and 10 mpg‑US (24 L/100 km; 12 mpg‑imp) in the city.[49] It has a curb weight of around 6,400 lb (2,900 kg).[49]
Safety
Crash data for Hummers is less complete than for other SUVs. As a Class 3 truck, the Hummer is exempt from many United States Department of Transportation safety regulations.[50] The H1 lacks standard safety features, including child safety locks, child seat tethers, side airbags, and stability control. Large blind spots make parking difficult and possibly dangerous.[50]
Drivers
A one-year study, conducted by a firm that provides statistical information to insurance companies, found that drivers of Hummer H2 and H3s receive about five times as many traffic tickets as the national average for all vehicles (standardized based on the number of violations per 100,000 miles driven).[51]

Licensing[edit]

GM is active in licensing the Hummer. Various companies have licensed the Hummer trademarks for use on colognes, flashlights, bicycles, shoes, coats, hats, laptops, toys, clothing, CD players, video games and other items. An electric quadricycle badged as a Hummer was produced in the UK.[52][53]

Hummer (stylized as HUMMER) is a brand of pickups and SUVs that was first marketed in 1992 when AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 Humvee.[1] Although discontinued in 2010, Hummer returned as a sub-brand of GMC in 2020. In 1998, General Motors (GM) purchased the brand name from AM General and marketed three vehicles: the original Hummer H1, based on the military Humvee, as well as the new H2 and H3 models that were based on smaller, civilian-market GM platforms.

By 2008, Hummer’s viability in the economic downturn was questioned. Rather than being transferred to the Motors Liquidation Company as part of the GM bankruptcy in 2009, the brand was retained by GM, to investigate its sale. No final deal was made, and in 2010, Hummer dealerships began shutting down.[2][3][4]

The nameplate returned to the marketplace for the 2022 model year not as a separate make brand, but as electric pickup truck and SUV models sold under the GMC brand as the «GMC Hummer EV».[5][6] The pre-production versions of the EV began November 2021 after a $2.2 billion investment to build a variety of all-electric vehicles in GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.[7]

History[edit]

Origin[edit]

AM General had planned to sell a civilian version of its Humvee as far back as the late 1980s. Having the same structure and most mechanical components, the civilian Hummers were finished in automotive gloss paint, adding passenger car enhancements such as air conditioning, sound insulation, upgraded upholstery, stereo systems, wood trim, and convenience packages.[8] The civilian model began in part because of the persistence of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who saw an Army convoy while filming Kindergarten Cop in Oregon and began to campaign and lobby for a civilian version to be available on the market.[9]

In 1992, AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 Humvee vehicle to the public under the brand name «Hummer».[10] The first two Hummer H1s to be sold were purchased by Schwarzenegger.

GM purchase[edit]

In December 1999, AM General sold the brand name to General Motors, but continued to manufacture the vehicles.[10] GM was responsible for the marketing and distribution of all civilian Hummers produced by AM General. Shortly thereafter, GM introduced two of its own design models, the H2 and H3, and renamed the original vehicle H1. AM General continued to build the H1 until it was discontinued in 2006,[11] and was contracted by GM to produce the H2. The H3 was built in Shreveport, LA alongside the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups, with which it shared the GMT-355 platform (modified and designated GMT-345). Hummer dealership buildings featured an oversized half Quonset Hut style roof, themed to the Hummer brand’s military origins.[12]

By 2006, the Hummer began to be exported and sold through importers and distributors in 33 countries.[13] On October 10, 2006, GM began producing the Hummer H3 at its Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa for international markets.[13] The Hummers built there at first were only left-hand drive, but right-hand drive versions were added and exported to Australia and other markets.

The H2 was also assembled in Kaliningrad, Russia, by Avtotor, starting in 2006 and ending in 2009.[14] The plant produced a few hundred vehicles annually, and its output was limited to local consumption with five dealers in Russia.

On June 3, 2008, one day prior to GM’s annual shareholder meeting, Rick Wagoner, GM’s CEO at that time, said the brand was being reviewed, and had the possibility of either being sold, having the production line completely redesigned, or being discontinued.[15] This was due to the decreasing demand for large SUVs as a result of higher oil prices. Almost immediately after the announcement, a pair of Indian automakers, including Mahindra & Mahindra, expressed interest in purchasing all or part of Hummer.[16]

In April 2009, GM President Fritz Henderson stated several interested parties had approached GM regarding the Hummer business.[17]

Failed sale and shutdown[edit]

On June 1, 2009, as a part of the General Motors bankruptcy announcement, the company revealed that the Hummer brand would be discontinued. However, the following day GM announced that instead it had reached a deal to sell the brand to an undisclosed buyer.[18] After GM announced that same day that the sale was to an undisclosed Chinese company,[19] CNN and the New York Times identified the buyer of the Hummer truck unit as China-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd.[18][20][21] Later that day, Sichuan Tengzhong itself announced the deal on their own website.

On January 6, 2010, GM CEO Ed Whitacre said he hoped to close the deal with Tengzhong by the end of that month.[22] On February 1, 2010, it was announced that Sichuan and General Motors had agreed to extend the deadline until the end of February as Sichuan tried to get approval by the Chinese government.[23] It was also revealed that the price tag of the Hummer brand was $150 million.[24]

Later, on February 24, 2010, GM announced the Tengzhong deal had collapsed and the Hummer brand would soon shut down.[25] There were reports that Sichuan Tengzhong might pursue the purchase of the Hummer brand from GM by purchasing it privately through the company’s new J&A Tengzhong Fund SPC, a private equity investment fund owned by an offshore entity that was recruiting private investors to buy into its acquisition plan.[26] The financial markets posed problems for established borrowers and even more for Tengzhong, a little-known company from western China, at the same time as the potential value of the Hummer brand continued to decline given high fuel prices and weak consumer demand.[27]

The company announced it was willing to consider offers for all or part of the assets. American company Raser Technologies along with several others expressed interest in buying the company. However, on April 7, 2010, this attempt failed as well, and General Motors officially said it was shutting down the Hummer SUV brand and offering rich rebates in a bid to move the remaining 2,200 vehicles.[28][29]

After filling a rental-car fleet order, the last Hummer H3 rolled off the line at Shreveport on May 24, 2010.[30]

Revival[edit]

In mid-2019, rumors began to circulate that General Motors was considering reviving the Hummer nameplate in 2021, as the market for off-road vehicles was reaching historic levels of sales.[31] GM President Mark Ruess was asked about the possible return in the summer of 2019, and said, «I love Hummer. I don’t know. We’re looking at everything.»[31] Credibility to the earlier reporting began to solidify after the conclusion of the 2019 General Motors strike, as contract negotiations led to the commitment by GM of saving its Detroit-Hamtramck facility from closing by investing in and retooling it to build future electric trucks and SUVs; the products were to be built on GM’s upcoming «BT1» electric truck platform.[32] GM’s own documentation listed three brands as receiving products from the BT1 architecture: Cadillac (presumably an electric Cadillac Escalade), Chevrolet (Silverado EV), and a third unknown brand referred to as the «M-Brand.»[32]

Industry insiders claimed they had sources saying that the «M-Brand» was a Hummer because a revival of the brand with established name recognition would help reduce marketing costs. The Hummer revival on the BT1 platform was known internally as «Project O,» potentially named after former Chief Camaro Engineer Al Oppenheiser (the man responsible for the return of the Camaro in 2010), who was moved from Camaro development to overseeing an EV program.[33] Oppenheiser later confirmed this himself.[34] By November 2019, media reports all but confirmed that Hummer would return with two electric models, a truck and an SUV, sometime in 2021.[35] On November 21, 2019, General Motors CEO Mary Barra confirmed that GM would be releasing an electric pickup truck in the fall of 2021, but did not name the brand under which it would be built.[36]

The new Hummer line is not a standalone brand, as it was before General Motors filed for bankruptcy, but a model within GM’s GMC brand.[37]

On January 30, 2020, GM released a series of short videos revealing the return of Hummers in the form of electric SUV and truck models marketed under the GMC brand. A 30-second Super Bowl ad featured NBA superstar LeBron James. The vehicle was to be revealed on May 20, 2020, but the date was later pushed back to October 20, 2020.

The Hummer EV SUT was officially revealed on October 20, 2020, during the 2020 World Series. The Hummer EV SUV was unveiled during the NCAA Tournament Final Four on April 3, 2021.

The all-electric sub-brand of GMC will have several versions with initially only the most expensive «Edition 1» four-door pickup available followed by other models and later as an SUV.[38]

Models[edit]

Hummer H1[edit]

The first vehicle in the Hummer range was the Hummer H1, based on the Humvee. Released for the civilian market in 1992, this vehicle was designed by American Motors’ AM General subsidiary to meet U.S. Military specifications that were issued in 1979.[39] By 1982, Renault (which was partially owned by the French government) took controlling interest in AMC, and the AM General division was sold in 1983 to Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV) because US regulations barred ownership of defense contractors by foreign governments.[40] American Motors itself was acquired by Chrysler in 1987.[41] Production of H1 civilian versions continued throughout 2006.

Hummer H2[edit]

The Hummer H2 was the second vehicle in the Hummer range built in the AM General facility under contract from General Motors from 2002 to 2009. There were two variations: The H2 SUV and H2 SUT.

Hummer H3[edit]

The H3 and H3T truck were the smallest of the Hummer models and were based on the GMT355 platform shared with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon compact pickup trucks. The H3 line was produced from 2005 to 2010 by General Motors.

Concept vehicles[edit]

Hummer HX[edit]

The Hummer HX was developed in 2008 as an open-air, two-door off-road concept car, smaller than other Hummer models.

Plug-in hybrid[edit]

Raser Technologies (formerly of Utah)[42] was to use technology similar to that in the Chevrolet Volt. The company unveiled the prototype to the 2009 Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit.[43] The E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) powertrain technology, was claimed to power the vehicle for up to 40 miles (64 km) on its battery, and then a small 4-cylinder internal combustion engine would start to generate more electricity.[44]

Racing[edit]

Team Hummer Racing was created in 1993. Led by off-road racer Rod Hall, Team Hummer competed in the stock classes of both BitD and SCORE, with specialized racing shock absorbers, tires, and other modifications, along with mandatory safety equipment. Team Hummer stock-class H3 was driven by Hall who finished first in class with the H3 in the 2005 Baja 1000. Team Hummer earned 11 production-class wins at the Baja 1000.

A highly modified, two-wheel drive Hummer was raced by Robby Gordon in 2006 (did not finish), 2007 (8th place), 2009 (3rd place), 2010 (8th place), 2011 (did not finish), 2012 (disqualified), and 2013 (14th place) Dakar Rally.

Stretch limousines[edit]

The Hummer H2 has been stretched by third-party companies into a variety of limousine versions.[45] The Hummer H2 was cut behind the cab and the chassis extended to create a passenger section for 14, 16, or even 22 passengers.

Production[edit]

  • AM General Hummer H1 Assembly Plant, Mishawaka, Indiana – 500,000-square-foot plant (46,000 m2) opened 1984 to build HMMWV (HUMVEE) and began production of the H1 in 1992. Production ceased 2006, but HMMWV production continues.
  • AM General Hummer H2 Assembly Plant, Mishawaka, Indiana – 673,000-square-foot plant (62,500 m2) opened 2002. H2 production ended 2009. Plant sold to SF Motors, maker of electric vehicles, in 2017.[46]
  • General Motors South Africa Struandale Assembly Plant, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa – built in 1996, expanded to 75,625 square meters (814,000 sq ft) to build H3 models. H3 production ended 2009.
  • General Motors Shreveport Operations, Shreveport, Louisiana – in 2005, to accommodate the production of the H3, an additional 296,000 square feet (27,500 m2) was added to plant built by GM in 1981. In July 2009, GM had shut down Hummer production of the H3, but the automaker had a special fleet order from Avis Rent a Car System.[47]
  • Avtotor Kaliningrad, Russia – licensed version of H2 starting from 2006 and production ended in 2009.

Criticisms[edit]

Criticism of Hummers mirrors the criticism of SUVs in general, but to a higher degree. Specific criticisms of Hummers include:

Size
Hummers (specifically the H1 and H2) are significantly bigger than other SUVs, which can cause problems parking, driving, and fitting in a garage. Their large size may also pose a serious threat to smaller vehicles and pedestrians.[48]
Poor fuel economy
Even compared to other heavy passenger vehicles, Hummers without the diesel engine options have very poor fuel economy. Because the H2 is built to the over-8500-lb GVW, its fuel economy is neither published by the U.S. EPA nor counted toward Corporate Average Fuel Economy.[49] For example, H2 in one engine configuration averages an estimated 14 mpg‑US (17 L/100 km; 17 mpg‑imp) on the highway and 10 mpg‑US (24 L/100 km; 12 mpg‑imp) in the city.[49] It has a curb weight of around 6,400 lb (2,900 kg).[49]
Safety
Crash data for Hummers is less complete than for other SUVs. As a Class 3 truck, the Hummer is exempt from many United States Department of Transportation safety regulations.[50] The H1 lacks standard safety features, including child safety locks, child seat tethers, side airbags, and stability control. Large blind spots make parking difficult and possibly dangerous.[50]
Drivers
A one-year study, conducted by a firm that provides statistical information to insurance companies, found that drivers of Hummer H2 and H3s receive about five times as many traffic tickets as the national average for all vehicles (standardized based on the number of violations per 100,000 miles driven).[51]

Licensing[edit]

GM is active in licensing the Hummer. Various companies have licensed the Hummer trademarks for use on colognes, flashlights, bicycles, shoes, coats, hats, laptops, toys, clothing, CD players, video games and other items. An electric quadricycle badged as a Hummer was produced in the UK.[52][53]

В 1981 году, «Хамви» был принят на вооружение США, и стал всемирно известным после участия в войне в Персидском заливе против Ирака. Сегодня «Хамви» стоит на вооружении более 40 стран мира, и производится в различных модификациях, что делает его поистине многоцелевым военным транспортом.

В 1992 году, началось производство гражданской модели «Хамви», которая и получила название «Хаммер H1» (англ. Hummer H1, название появилось в результате смешения «Humvee» и «Hammer» — молот). Производством гражданской модели занялась североамериканская компания General Motors. Гражданская версия вездехода отличалась от военного всего несколькими изменениями. Несколько «Хаммеров», принадлежащих грузинским ВС были захвачены российской стороной в ходе Войны в Южной Осетии и затем отправлены для детального изучения на российскую военную базу.[1]

Летом 2008 года, в связи с ухудшающимся финансовым положением General Motors и сильным падением спроса на продукцию Hummer, корпорация приняла решение о продаже марки. Почти год велись пероворы с потенциальными покупателями из Китая, Индии, России и других стран. В итоге выбор был остановлен на китайской компании Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co, с которой 2 июня 2009 года (через день после объявления о банкротстве GM) был подписан Меморандум о взаимопонимании — предварительное соглашение о продаже бренда. Полностью сделка должна быть закрыта до конца III квартала 2009 года. Также планируется заключить долгосрочное соглашение, по которому General Motors на 2 года станет подрядчиком по производству моделей H3 и H3T на заводе в Шривпорте (Луизиана). После 2010 года новый владелец будет самостоятельно определять дальнешее развитие бренда и разработку новых моделей.

Сравнение «Хаммера» и «Хамви»

Гражданская модификация H1 полностью основана на военной модели HMMWV, в гражданской модификации отсутствует броня и вооружение, по остальным же техническим характеристикам он полностью повторяет военную модель. Так же в стандартной комплектации гражданской модели H1 присутствуют салон повышенного комфорта, удобные сидения, аудиосистема и климат-контроль. Кроме этого, в гражданской модели была изменена электрическая схема, которая стала 12-вольтовой и включает в себя две 12-вольтовых батареи, включенных параллельно, в отличие от военного батареи подключены последовательно для получения 24 вольт.

История основания.

Производство Hummer началось с того, что американским военным срочно потребовался специальный автомобиль, с очень большой вместительностью. Поэтому летом 1979 года началась разработка данного автомобиля. Разработкой занялась компания AM General. HMMWV M998 такое обозначение получила программа. Полное название переводится как «Высокомобильное многоцелевое колесное транспортное средство модель 998» и произносится американцами как «Хаммви». Именно от этого сокращения и появилось название Хаммер. Вездеход был легок в управлении, поражал своей проходимостью и что не маловажно, на него можно было поставить различное вооружение. Неудивительно, что он стал основным автомобилем, которым пользовались американские военные. Недавно концерн General Motors и компания AM General подписали договор. Суть договора сводится к тому, что за компанией GM закрепляется право на сбыт и распространение гражданского вида данного автомобиля, а за AM General сохраняется продажа армейского варианта внедорожника Хаммер. Так было положено начало новому этапу в жизни Хаммера.

Марка первого образца военного Хамера имела название M998 и была предоставлена General Motors Corporation после 11 месяцев работы. Этот образец вошел в серию 1981 года. На сегодняшний день он известен под названием Н1. После проведенных испытаний военные оказались потрясены, новый внедорожник превзошел все их ожидания, он не только соответствовал всем требованиям к военным автомобилям, но и превосходил их. В то время как суперсовременные танки M1A Abrams оставались далеко позади. Именно после этого компания AM General начала получать заказы от частных лиц, на поставку Хаммеров. Количество заказов было столь велико, что пришлось в инициативном порядке заняться разработкой и выпуском гражданского варианта. С 1992 года Хаммер мог купить любой желающий. Однако, приобрести такой автомобиль могут только очень состоятельные люди, ведь его стоимость очень высока, даже для американцев. Стоимость автомобиля зависит от его комплектации и колеблется от 70 000 до 85 000 долларов. В год продается около 2000 штук Хаммеров, что сопоставимо с еще одной элитарной маркой Ferrari.

Арнольд Шварценеггер стал одним из первых, кто приобрел Хаммер, а после среди покупателей данного внедорожника были такие знаменитости как Стивен Спилберг, Сильвестр Сталлоне, Джордж Лукас, Андре Агасси. В 2000 году в Детройте была проведена выставка, на которой был представлен Хаммер Н2. Он является прообразом Хаммера. Он появился на свет благодаря совместным усилиям работников GM и AM General. Ходовая часть Хаммера Н2 унифицирована с Chevrolet Tahoe. По заявлению Клейя Дина, данная машина не какая-то переделка старого варианта, а совершенно отдельный проект, который имеет полное право занимать отдельную от первоначальной модели нишу. Хаммер Н2 в разы комфортнее и роскошнее, нежели Хаммер Н1. Это стало возможным благодаря унификации интерьера Хаммера Н2 с другими роскошными внедорожниками, чьей разработкой занимался концерн GM. Серийные образцы 2003 года будут дополнены системой ночного видения. Компания General Motors надеется, что продажи Хаммера резко пойдут вверх. Основные ставки конечно делаются на модель Н2, однако Н1 также не будут сбрасываться со счетов, его производство не будет приостановлено. Хаммер Н1 не пользуется большим спросом, однако у этой модели стабильные продажи. Кроме того разработчики подумывают выпустить модель Н3, это будет «паркетный» внедорожник. Хаммер Н3 станет наиболее доступной моделью из представленного ряда Хаммеров, она будет представлена как модель 2005 года.

Хаммер Н3 будет собран на той же платформе, на которой создавались пикапы Chevrolet S10 и GMC Sonoma. Отделка салона и кузов будут отличаться от данных марок машин, так как будут разработаны специально для Н3. Хаммер Н3 унаследовал от Н2 массивную решетку радиатора и внушительный бампер, его колесные арки расширены и оснащены пластиковыми накладками, также Н3 имеет мощный капот, который вполне может вместить в себя восьмицилиндровый двигатель. Внешне Хаммер Н3 напоминает своего конкурента Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Из официальных источников стало известно, что для Хаммера Н3 подготовлено 3 мотора. Для обычных Н3 представлены двигатели на 220 и 260 сил, а вот для тех, кто приобретет самую дорогую версию Н3, будут поставлены движки V8, мощность которых достигает 300 лошадиных сил. Стоимость самого доступного Хаммера будет равна 30 000 долларов. На 5 тысяч дороже обойдется покупка модели с шестицилиндровым мотором. Цена же модель с V8 названа пока не была.

История Hummer началась из-за потребности американских военных в специальном автомобиле. В результате, американская компания AM General летом 1979 года начала работы по созданию автомобиля повышенной вместимости. Выпускаемая с 1992 года гражданская модификация знаменитого внедорожника ежегодно подвергается небольшим изменениям, что помогает компании сохранить спрос на устойчивом уровне. Последний модельный ряд компании AM General включает четыре варианта кузова: двухместный пикап с большим грузовым отсеком (Open Top), четырехместный пикап с мягким верхом (4-doors Open Top), четырехместный пикап с жестким верхом (4-doors Hard Top) и универсал с полностью закрытым алюминиевым кузовом (Wagon). Максимальная скорость достигает 105 км/час, а разгон 0-100 км/час занимает 19,5 секунды. В качестве силовой установки используется V-образный восьмицилиндровый дизельный двигатель объемом 6,5 литра мощностью 170 л.с. Он имеет фантастический ресурс в 1 миллион км (!), что вместе с нержавеющим кузовом делает Hummer практически вечным, по заказу возможна установка тубодизеля мощностью 195 л.с. Компания дает гарантию на 36 месяцев или 36 тысяч миль.

Недавно Hummer получил антипробуксовочную систему TorqTrack (TT4), разработанную специально для полного привода. При помощи электронных датчиков TT4 следит за тем, чтобы ни одно колесо не проскальзывало. Как только одно из колес начинает пробуксовывать, TT4 притормаживает его при помощи рабочей тормозной системы, что позволяет передавать больший крутящий момент на колеса с лучшим сцеплением. Как заявил один из директоров компании AM General Билл Томсон: «если раньше успешное вождение по бездорожью наполовину зависело от автомобиля, наполовину от водителя, то на Hummer с системой ТТ4 водитель сможет положиться на автомобиль на все 90%».

На автомобильной выставке в Детройте в 2000 году был показан прообраз нового Hummer под названием Hummer H2. Он разрабатывался совместными усилиями конструкторов GM и AM General, а его ходовая часть унифицированная с Chevrolet Tahoe. «Перед вами не переделка первой модели», — заявил один из авторов проекта Н2 Клэй Дин, инженер корпорации GM. — «Это принципиально новый Hummer, занимающий другую нишу, нежели первая модель». Hummer H2 намного роскошнее и комфортнее Н1. Оформление интерьера модели Н2 унифицировано с салонами других шикарных внедорожником концерна GM. На серийные образцы 2003 года будет устанавливаться система ночного видения Night Vision.

Совершенно новая модель, получившая имя Hummer H3 станет самым компактным и самым доступным автомобилем марки Hummer и появится в продаже в будущем году как автомобиль 2005 модельного года.

Внедорожник Hummer H3 построен на той же платформе, что и пикапы Chevrolet S10 и GMC Sonoma. Однако кузов у новинки и отделка салона — собственные, разработанные специально для этой модели. Здесь стоит отметить, что дизайн Hummer H3 выполнен в том же стиле, что и более крупный H2 и получил аналогичную массивную решетку радиатора с мощным бампером, расширенные колесные арки с пластиковыми накладками и мощный капот, под которым спокойно умещается восьмицилиндровый двигатель. Кстати, в целом внешность H3 отдаленно напоминает Jeep Grand Cherokee, с которым ему, собственно, и придется конкурировать.

По официальной информации, для Hummer H3 подготовлено сразу три мотора. Это базовые 220- и 260-сильные двигатели, а также могучий V8, мощностью в 300 лошадиных сил, который будет устанавливаться на самые дорогие версии новинки. Отметим также, что самый доступный Hummer будет стоить порядка 30 000 долларов. Версия с шестицилиндровым мотором будет примерно на пять тысяч долларов дороже. О цене топ-версии с мотором V8 пока не сообщается. Для сравнения, самый доступный Hummer H2 стоит в США 49 000 долларов, а Hummer H1 — более 100 000 долларов.

В отличие от нас, американцы умеют учиться на собственных ошибках. Взять хотя бы печально известную войну во Вьетнаме: после ее бесславного окончания государство принялось за коренную реформу армии. Менялось все — от способа комплектования вооруженных сил личным составом (от воинской повинности отказались вообще) до требований, предъявляемых к летным и боевым качествам авиации. Дошло дело и до легкого внедорожника AM General M151, происходившего от легендарного Willys MB времен Второй мировой. Как ни хорош был «Виллис», но к середине семидесятых он не устраивал военных ни проходимостью, ни вместимостью, ни грузоподъемностью, ни степенью защищенности экипажа, а точнее, ее полным отсутствием.

В 1979 году Пентагон объявил конкурс на проект легкого оперативно-тактического автомобиля для нужд армии, участвовать в котором изъявили желание компании не только из США, но и из других стран. В июле к созданию своего варианта внедорожника приступила American Motors General Corporation (AM General Corp.), традиционный поставщик разнообразной техники для американской армии.

В тот период AM General входила в состав автомобильной корпорации American Motors, выпускавшей гражданские машины марок AMC и Jeep. Перспективную разработку назвали HMMWV, что расшифровывается как High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle — «высокомобильное многоцелевое колесное транспортное средство». Понятно, что о такое название можно язык сломать, и не один раз, поэтому инженеры быстро придумали ему имя попроще — «Humvee» («Хамви»). Ровно через год, в июле 1980-го, первый прототип отправился на ходовые испытания в пустыню Невада, где располагаются наиболее секретные базы армии США, и где тестируются новейшие образцы военной техники.

История марки Hummer началась с 1979 года, когда американская армия объявила тендер на создание тактического многофункционального автомобиля.

Компания AM General приступила к созданию внедорожника который, получил название HMMWV M998 (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle Model 998), от этого сокращения и родилось название Hummer. Пройдя все испытания в 1983 году компания AM Gemeral, получила заказ от военного руководства США на поставку HMMWV M998 (известного как H1).

Управлять этим автомобилем мог практически любой новобранец т. к. в базовой версии HMMWV M998 комплектовался привычной, всем американцам, автоматической коробкой передач. В результате всех испытаний H1 был выбран основным автомобилем армии США.

После войны в Персидском заливе, когда в новостях по всему миру был показан HMMWV M998, который без усилий преодолевал пески и барханы, компания стала получать заказы от частных лиц. Начиная с 1992 года стала выпускаться гражданская версия Hummer, одним из первых покупателей гражданской версии Hummer стал Арнольд Шварценеггер.

Ежегодно Hummer подвергается небольшим изменениям, поддерживая постоянный спрос на эту модель. Большой ресурс двигателя и алюминиевый кузов делает этот автомобиль почти вечным. В 1999 году Hummer получил антипробуксовочную систему TT4, специально разработанную для полного привода, что позволило увеличить и без того отличную проходимость.

В 2000 году компания предоставила новый внедорожник который, получил название H2.

В 2003 году на серийные образцы стали устанавливать систему ночного видения Night Vision.

В 2005 году компания представила новую модель, которая получила название H3.

Американская компания Hummer , является частью General Motors (одного из крупнейших концернов), ее специализация – выпуск супер-внедорожников с повышенной вместимостью. Выпуск Hummer осуществляется на заводе UAW , который принадлежит компании AM General. Завод находится в штате Индиана в городе Мишавак.

История основания.

Производство Hummer началось с того, что американским военным срочно потребовался специальный автомобиль, с очень большой вместительностью. Поэтому летом 1979 года началась разработка данного автомобиля. Разработкой занялась компания AM General. HMMWV M998 такое обозначение получила программа. Полное название переводится как «Высокомобильное многоцелевое колесное транспортное средство модель 998» и произносится американцами как «Хаммви». Именно от этого сокращения и появилось название Хаммер. Вездеход был легок в управлении, поражал своей проходимостью и что не маловажно, на него можно было поставить различное вооружение. Неудивительно, что он стал основным автомобилем, которым пользовались американские военные. Недавно концерн General Motors и компания AM General подписали договор. Суть договора сводится к тому, что за компанией GM закрепляется право на сбыт и распространение гражданского вида данного автомобиля, а за AM General сохраняется продажа армейского варианта внедорожника Хаммер. Так было положено начало новому этапу в жизни Хаммера.

HUMMER-M998

Марка первого образца военного Хамера имела название M998 и была предоставлена General Motors Corporation после 11 месяцев работы. Этот образец вошел в серию 1981 года. На сегодняшний день он известен под названием Н1. После проведенных испытаний военные оказались потрясены, новый внедорожник превзошел все их ожидания, он не только соответствовал всем требованиям к военным автомобилям, но и превосходил их. Неудивительно, что уже в марте 1983 года было решено оформить заявку на первую партию вездеходов HMMWV M998. Свою известность Хаммер получил после того, как была успешно завершена операция «Буря в пустыне». Не было ни одного телевизора в мире, на котором бы не мелькали кадры войны в Персидском заливе. На них постоянно появлялись вездеходы Хаммер, которые с легкостью проходили по склонам барханов и ехали по песку с такой легкостью, словно это был обычный асфальт. В то время как суперсовременные танки M1A Abrams оставались далеко позади. Именно после этого компания AM General начала получать заказы от частных лиц, на поставку Хаммеров. Количество заказов было столь велико, что пришлось в инициативном порядке заняться разработкой и выпуском гражданского варианта. С 1992 года Хаммер мог купить любой желающий. Однако, приобрести такой автомобиль могут только очень состоятельные люди, ведь его стоимость очень высока, даже для американцев. Стоимость автомобиля зависит от его комплектации и колеблется от 70 000 до 85 000 долларов. В год продается около 2000 штук Хаммеров, что сопоставимо с еще одной элитарной маркой Ferrari.

Арнольд Шварценеггер стал одним из первых, кто приобрел Хаммер, а после среди покупателей данного внедорожника были такие знаменитости как Стивен Спилберг, Сильвестр Сталлоне, Джордж Лукас, Андре Агасси. Хаммер очень популярен в Арабских Эмиратах, странах Ближнего Востока, ну и, конечно же, в России. Для того чтобы получить Хаммер в России необходимо внести полную предоплату московскому дилеру GM.

Хаммер для гражданских лиц ежегодно модифицируется, что позволяет сохранять на него спрос на должном уровне. В последнем модельном ряду можно выбрать один из четырех различных типов кузовов. Это может быть двухместный пикап у которого довольно большой грузовой отсек (Open Top), или четырехместный пикап есть два варианта с мягким (4-doors Open Top) или твердым (4-doors Hard Top) верхом, есть машина универсал с закрытым кузовом (Wagon). Максимальная скорость Хаммера равна 105 км/час, разгоняется машина за 19,5 секунд до 100 км/час. Восьмицилиндровый дизельный двигатель используется во внедорожнике в качестве силовой установки. Дизель имеет V-образную форму, его объем равен 6,5 литра, а мощность 170 л.с. Его ресурс поистине фантастичен , он составляет 1 миллион км. Наряду с нержавеющим кузовом, данный дизель делает Хаммер практически вечной машиной. Кроме того возможна установка турбодизеля мощностью 195 л.с. по индивидуальному заказу. Гарантия на Хаммер равна 36 месяцам или 36 тысячам миль. Недавним приобретением Хаммера стала антипробуксовочная система TorqTrack (TT4), которая была специально разработана для полного привода. Она оснащена электронными датчиками, которые следят за тем, чтобы колеса не проскальзывали. При пробуксовке одного из колес ТТ4, благодаря тормозной системе, начинает притормаживать это колесо. За счет таких манипуляций больший крутящий момент передается колесам, у которых сцепление лучше. По заявлению Билла Томпсона теперь водитель сможет положиться на свою машину на все 90%.

В 2000 году в Детройте была проведена выставка, на которой был представлен Хаммер Н2. Он является прообразом Хаммера. Он появился на свет благодаря совместным усилиям работников GM и AM General. Ходовая часть Хаммера Н2 унифицирована с Chevrolet Tahoe. По заявлению Клейя Дина, данная машина не какая-то переделка старого варианта, а совершенно отдельный проект, который имеет полное право занимать отдельную от первоначальной модели нишу. Хаммер Н2 в разы комфортнее и роскошнее, нежели Хаммер Н1. Это стало возможным благодаря унификации интерьера Хаммера Н2 с другими роскошными внедорожниками, чьей разработкой занимался концерн GM. Серийные образцы 2003 года будут дополнены системой ночного видения. Компания General Motors надеется, что продажи Хаммера резко пойдут вверх. Основные ставки конечно делаются на модель Н2, однако Н1 также не будут сбрасываться со счетов, его производство не будет приостановлено. Хаммер Н1 не пользуется большим спросом, однако у этой модели стабильные продажи. Кроме того разработчики подумывают выпустить модель Н3, это будет «паркетный» внедорожник. Хаммер Н3 станет наиболее доступной моделью из представленного ряда Хаммеров, она будет представлена как модель 2005 года.

Хаммер Н3 будет собран на той же платформе, на которой создавались пикапы Chevrolet S10 и GMC Sonoma. Отделка салона и кузов будут отличаться от данных марок машин, так как будут разработаны специально для Н3. Хаммер Н3 унаследовал от Н2 массивную решетку радиатора и внушительный бампер, его колесные арки расширены и оснащены пластиковыми накладками, также Н3 имеет мощный капот, который вполне может вместить в себя восьмицилиндровый двигатель. Внешне Хаммер Н3 напоминает своего конкурента Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Из официальных источников стало известно, что для Хаммера Н3 подготовлено 3 мотора. Для обычных Н3 представлены двигатели на 220 и 260 сил, а вот для тех, кто приобретет самую дорогую версию Н3, будут поставлены движки V8, мощность которых достигает 300 лошадиных сил. Стоимость самого доступного Хаммера будет равна 30 000 долларов. На 5 тысяч дороже обойдется покупка модели с шестицилиндровым мотором. Цена же модель с V8 названа пока не была.
