Saitama (Japanese: サイタマ) is a fictional superhero and the protagonist of One’s manga series One-Punch Man. Saitama, an unassociated hero, hails from Z-City and performs heroic deeds as a hobby. For three years, he has trained enough to defeat any enemy with a single punch, his unmatched strength leaving him bored. He becomes a reluctant mentor to Genos, a cyborg seeking revenge against another cyborg who killed his family and destroyed his hometown, after Saitama defeats a monster that defeated Genos. With Genos, Saitama learns about a heroes organization who are also fighting the monsters.

The character was created by One as part of a webcomic involving an alternate style of superhero who already started as the strongest one in the world and most of his stories involved daily chores. For the manga serialization, Saitama was illustrated by Yusuke Murata.

The character has been voiced by Makoto Furukawa in Japanese and Max Mittelman in English. Saitama has been a popular character, often acclaimed by the fandom of being the strongest character in anime history.

CreationEdit

Manga author One became interested in creating a comic superhero who was already the strongest in the world.[1][2] He wanted to focus on different aspects of storytelling than those normally relied on in standard superhero stories, such as everyday problems. ONE said: «Punching is oftentimes pretty useless against life’s problems. But inside One-Punch Mans universe, I made Saitama a sort of guy who was capable of adapting his life to the world that surrounded him, only armed with his immense power. The only obstacles he faces are mundane things, like running short of money.»[2]

The idea was that the super hero became bored and instead dealt with daily chores.[3] In One’s point of view, a hero is not cool for being strong or strength. Instead, it is the mentality of Saitama and how he is able to understand other people’s mentalities.[2] The idea was that the super hero became bored and instead dealt with daily chores.[3] One felt difficulties in drawing scenarios for Saitama due to how overpowered he was. In Saitama’s case, all he have to do is have him show up to punch the problem away. In the world Saitama lives in, monsters show up frequently, so he gets to utilize his strength to the fullest, so he can feel comfortable making the plot. If anything happens, the author can always count on Saitama. The story will be interesting as long as he’s on the move. The only hard part is to make his allies seem not too weak.[3]

Artist Yusuke Murata initially drew him «cool» alongside the entire cast. In that process he was making Saitama look handsome, or adding stars in his eyes, but all of these ideas were scrapped. In the end, those things did not fit Saitama’s nature. He changed it since One’s ideas of Saitama was the complete opposite. Nevertheless, he had fun when drawing the character.[3] The idea of the blank expression Saitama tends to make were done intentionally for comedic effect. Murata also elaborated that while it is hard to relate to overpowered characters in fiction, the way One wrote Saitama managed to give this theme.[3]

CastingEdit

Saitama is voiced by Makoto Furukawa in the Japanese version[4] and by Max Mittelman in the English dub.[5][6] Furukawa first learned of the series thanks to a friends who had the manga. He felt that the story, in which each episode is completed in a short number of episodes, and that Saitama always finishes with a quick blow to defeat the enemy at the end, is simple yet very interesting. Additionally, his first impression of Saitama was so strong that he was worried about whether he would be able to play it. He was surprised that he was really the strongest hero because the gap between his daily life and fighting was appealing.[7] Furukawa called him «complex» due to his lack of motivation and not being attentive enough while his chores are part of what make him charm which made him relatable.[8] The actor explained that Saitama has two different tone based on the scenes he is involved making him both cool and uncool.[9]

Mittelman was attracted by the series’ first episode and found hilarious how Saitama dresses in contrast to the menacing villains. In getting the role, he wanted to make sure he got appropriate balance between being bored but not lazy and «a little detached». He expressed difficulties in emulating Furukawa, claiming his performance would come as «crazy» due to the differences between the Japanese and the English versions.[10]

AppearancesEdit

Saitama is a bald-headed 25-year-old man who is bored of fighting because he is able to effortlessly defeat enemies with a single punch.Vol. 1 He lives in an apartment in City Z. Three years prior to the start of the series, when he still had hair, Saitama was job hunting when he defeated the powerful supervillain Crablante that attempted to kill a child with a butt-chin.Ch. 2 Saitama says he became a hero «for the fun of it».Ch. 5 His abilities mainly consist of physical abilities magnified to an immeasurable degree: strength is the true power of Saitama, with speed, stamina, and durability being mere side-effects. He attributes this to a daily training regimen (100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, a 10 km run, eating healthy food, and abstaining from use of the air conditioner or heater in order to reinforce his mental fortitude.) (He also mentions training even when his body was wounded and made strange cracking sounds). Three years of this spartan training pushed Saitama to his limits, making him evidently unbeatable.Ch. 11 Early in the series, he picks up a disciple and roommate, Genos.Vol. 1

Though he had broken all the physical records in the Hero entrance exam by huge margins, Saitama enters the Hero Association with a score of 71, giving him one of the lowest ranks in the Hero Association. This is due to his miserable performance on the mental exam.Web ch. 16-17, Ch. 16 He soon goes up the ranks by performing many deeds, although many of his efforts are not recognized because of collateral damage or higher-tiered superheroes receiving more credit. These include defeating the raging ninja supervillain/assassin known as Speed-o’-Sound Sonic (who became his unlikely rival) and destroying a meteor similar to Chicxulub, each with a single punch. As of the current arc of the webcomic by ONE, he is A-Class rank 39. Regardless of his rank, he does not mind giving others the credit, as demonstrated in his actions following the fight against the Deep Sea King. In the Dark Matter Thieves’ story arc, he is unfazed by the telekinesis of a powerful esper, further displaying his resistance. This arc was also one of the only times he has used his «serious punch», defeating the world-conquering leader of the aliens, Lord Boros. It was also revealed that Saitama’s power can continue to grow limitless as demonstrated during his fight with Cosmic Garou, with the latter leaving him behind on the power scaling through every blows exchanged. Through various circumstances, he forms friendships with Mumen Rider, Bang, King, and Blizzard. His superhero name in the association is Bald Cape (ハゲマント, Hagemanto, Anime: Caped Baldy).Ch. 45

The character is also featured in One-Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows video game.[11]

ReceptionEdit

PopularityEdit

Saitama ranked first in a popularity poll from the manga.[12] In Animax Carnival Malaysia 2016, an attraction of the series where the guest was challenged to punch harder than the character.[13] Several types of merchandising were also created.[14][15] In 2019, a Singaporean man named known as Seah replicated Saitama’s workout he mentions early in the series to become fit, showing positive results in the process.[16]

Critical receptionEdit

Critical response to Saitama has been mostly positive. Anime News Network enjoyed his early chapters and his relationship with Genos for how hilarious the duo are.[17] For the series, Den of Geek commented the series’ biggest appeal were not the fight scenes but instead Saitama’s comical scenes whenever he is disappointed with a villain which act as a satire from fighting series. However, the first season’s ending was praised for mixing both elements of the narrative into two episodes where Saitama makes a dull expression before becoming serious in a fight for the first time.[18] IGN agreed stating the series does a fine job at how Saitama properly ends most of his fights in a different fashion.[19]

Comic Book Resources praised chapter 165 as it portrayed Saitama at his biggest which several readers have always been looking forward to though there is no sense of happiness to his feats.[20][21] SportsKeeda listed Saitama as the series’ strongest character twice but wondered if the recently introduced character, God, might be able to defeat the title character.[22][23] ScreenRant also listed Saitama as the strongest character in anime history.[24] SportsKeeda noted several fandoms tend to be split on who is the strongest character in two series: Saitama or Goku from Dragon Ball.[25] Anime News Network compared Saitama with All Might, a famous character from the manga series, My Hero Academia among Western superheroes, stating that despite their similar concepts, the narrative is far different. Nevertheless, the writer said that all of them give the idea of selfimprovement to the fans.[26] Furukawa’s performance as Saitama was also praised.[27]

Panic at the Discourse writer Joe Yang stated that when Saitama defeats the monster Deep Sea King, he sacrifices his own reputation by not taking credit as he «upholds the ideology of the hero’s association» giving depths of to reflex in how heroes are recognized in fiction. Yang expressed contrast between Saitama and the Marvel heroes and instead compared him with anime heroes like Naruto Uzumaki, Goku, Ichigo Kurosaki, among others as they do not act like heroes neither. Yang placed emphasis on Saitama’s origins as a failed «salaryman masculinity» common in the Showa era as well as how he is not approved by Hero Association as an important hero by society. In concluding, Yang believes that One wrote Saitama as an example of salarymen.[28]

Battles

I’m just a guy who’s a hero for fun.

This article is about the character. For the chapter, see Chapter 6.

Saitama (サイタマ, Saitama) is the main protagonist of the series and the titular One-Punch Man. He is currently the most powerful being to exist in the series. Saitama faces a self-imposed existential crisis, as he is now too powerful to gain any thrill from battle.[7]

Initially just a hero for fun,[8] Saitama later registers to be a professional hero for the Hero Association[9] upon realizing that nobody recognizes him as a hero, and defends his home in Z-City from monsters, villains, and other threats.[10] Under the Hero Association, he is assigned the hero name Caped Baldy (ハゲマント, Hagemanto; Viz: Bald Cape)[11] and is currently A-Class Rank 39.

Appearance[]

Saitama is an ordinary-looking bald man with a thin but well-built physique and is of average height and weight. He used to have a full head of short black hair but lost it due to the intensity of his hero training regimen.

Saitama is usually deliberately drawn in a more simplistic style than the other characters, similar to the style of the original webcomic, with an elliptical head and simple facial features. When drawn in a more serious style, Saitama is revealed to have sharp facial features, fearsome eyes, and chiseled musculature. His posture changes as well, with a slack posture and sloping shoulders when lax, and a straightened posture and squared shoulders when serious.

Clothing[]

Saitama’s hero costume consists of a yellow one-piece jumpsuit with a short zipper at the collar and a black belt with a round golden buckle at its center. He wears red gloves that go 3/4 up his forearms and red boots that nearly reach his knees. His costume is finished with a white cape, fastened to his shoulders with big, round buttons.

Saitama owns several shirts and hoodies with various designs. This includes his:

  • Oppai (Boobies) Hoodie[12]
  • Oppai (Boobies) T-shirt[13]
  • Mentsuyu (Noodle Soup) T-shirt[citation needed]
  • Onsen (Hot Bath) T-shirt[14]
  • Ke (毛, Hair) Jacket[13]
  • Ke (毛, Hair) Shirt[citation needed]
  • Niku 🍖 (Meat 🍖) Jacket[15][16]
  • Umeboshi (Pickled Dry Plum) T-shirt[citation needed]
  • Nezumi Sushi (Mouse Sushi) T-shirt[17]
  • Munage (Chest Hair) T-shirt[18]
  • Shōyu (Soy Sauce) T-shirt: black[19] and white[20]
  • Shicago Burusu (Chicago Bulls) T-shirt[21]
  • 22nd Super Fight T-shirt[22]
  • Enoki Mushroom T-Shirt[23]

Personality[]

If the heroes run and hide, who will stay and fight?

Saitama’s character on the surface can be best summed up as «average». At first glance, nothing about him strikes anyone he meets or causes them to note anything remarkable about him. Before becoming a hero, he was an average salaryman and did not seem interested in anything initially, though becoming a hero has always been a dream of Saitama’s.[25] Before becoming one, he used to be frustrated about society, just like Hammerhead and even commenting that he could have become just like them depending on the path he took.[26]

Due to his great power and being virtually indestructible, Saitama is an indifferent person. Even the mightiest foes pose no challenge to him, so he does not take his hero work seriously, goes through everything with little to no effort, and yearns for an opponent that can provide him with a challenge.[27] The lack of worthy opponents has led him to suffer from a self-imposed existential crisis,[7] and he claims that his ability to feel any emotions has dulled considerably.[28] The combination of his attitude, unstoppable power, and «unimpressive» appearance often causes his battles to become anticlimactic. Saitama will usually allow his opponents to rant about their motives and power up into their strongest forms, before obliterating them with a single punch.[29]

Saitama’s indifferent expression after knowing people speaking ill of him

Saitama’s indifference doesn’t rest solely on his hero work either. In daily life, he is often seen lounging around, playing video games, reading manga, or going out for strolls. His taste in food is rather plain, and he often frequents food stalls rather than going to restaurants or cooking at home. As his primary interest, hero work has become unfulfilling, and he pays little attention to anything else. A running gag about Saitama is his inability to remember people’s faces and names, as seen when he forgot Speed-o’-Sound Sonic’s name,[30] or when he could not remember who Tanktop Tiger was.[31] Because of this, he sometimes ends up pronouncing people’s names incorrectly, much to their chagrin.[32] Saitama does not care if people insult him, and he usually ignores them and says that they need a hobby;[33] the only insult that could get a reaction out of him is anything about his lack of hair.[34][35] He has expressed distaste towards his officially assigned hero name, Caped Baldy. Thus, even after receiving it, he always refers to himself as Saitama.

Saitama’s reaction knowing he will miss a bargain sale

Despite his indifference, Saitama can find things that interest him and actively looks for activities to relieve his boredom. These things tend to be mundane activities such as watching TV, shopping, or playing games. He shows a measure of concern when it comes to bargains and deals, as seen when he fought Carnage Kabuto, where he was more shocked upon the realization that he was going to miss a bargain sale, rather than his opponent, who had undergone a transformation and was beating him around.[36]

Saitama gets impatient with Genos’ explanation

He can also express irritation and even outright anger depending on the situation. However, Saitama has limited patience for long explanations and often interrupts the speaker.[37][38][39] His ideal word count is 20 or less.[37] He can get angry when he loses to someone like King when they play games. He will become enraged if anyone messes with his food or damages his house as he immediately killed a mantis monster for crashing through his roof and told Genos to move his fight with Sonic somewhere away from his apartment.

Aside from being quite a cheapskate due to his financial status, he has a greedy side seen when he tried to steal bags of gold from the underground mine inside the Monster Association Headquarters and was visibly upset after accidentally dropping them down to the bottom of an underground ravine.[40]

Despite his general indifference to most things, Saitama was genuinely shocked when he realized that no one knew of him despite his achievements, curious as to why he doesn’t have any fans. This reaction demonstrates that while he isn’t necessarily into hero work for fame, he certainly doesn’t object to it.[41] Another running joke is Saitama’s jealousy of higher rankings, such as when he grew irritated when Genos listed off all of the comments made by fans about how amazing Genos is in their eyes.

Beneath the surface, Saitama is much more complex than his appearance and attitude suggest. While he scored low on the written portion of the hero exam, he is, by no means, unintelligent. Saitama is very observant, insightful, and has high tactical awareness. This is seen in how he could easily discern situations and character traits from the people and environment around him. He could pick up several hints about Sonic’s persona upon their first meeting.[42] When two tank top heroes jealously plotted to ruin him after the meteor event, he remarked that there were irate and self-serving hero types like them. He was even able to discern Fubuki’s forced offer of submission or destruction just before his crackdown on how the hero world really works than how it is currently run.[43] Saitama has shown remorse to his enemies before, particularly those who can give him a stimulating fight and don’t just go down in one hit. One such example of this is Boros, the self-claimed «Dominator of the Universe», with whom Saitama sympathized due to suffering from similar circumstances, though, in the end, even Boros still could not draw out Saitama’s full power.[44]

Saitama tends to come off as abrasive to others and often is inconsiderate of their feelings or how his words affect them. That isn’t to say he is intentionally malicious or rude, but rather that his indifference extends to his social interactions. He reacted to Fubuki greeting him as the number 1 B-Class heroine with a quick acknowledgement but seemed otherwise unimpressed frustrating Fubuki. He also downplays the gravity of situations based on his own perspective rather than that of others, never considering that those without his earth-shattering power would be rightly more horrified in extreme cases like Boros threatening to destroy the world or the monster society declaring open war on humanity. During his fight with Garou, Saitama initially displayed his unconcerned attitude against the Human Monster, from playful banter to compliments on Garou’s capability.

Saitama turning the civilians against him

The most surprising thing about Saitama is that he is actually one of the most morally upstanding heroes in the story. Saitama is very humble, as he purposefully let the masses turn against him in order for the defeated heroes to be given credit for their efforts against the Deep Sea King, even claiming that they had weakened the monster before his arrival wanting to give credit to the heroes that were actually risking their lives to protect innocent people.[45] Saitama did the same for the police station, killing a monster while disguised as a police officer, despite potentially gaining much fame had he revealed who he actually was as he heard the Hero Association executive try to force the police to beg for assistance exclaiming that, «Police and heroes don’t help people because someone had to beg».[46] This is also his outlook on being a hero as he told Genos, «If heroes run and hide, who will stand and fight». He also did not mind that King took credit for all of his achievements.[47] One of the most understated signs of Saitama’s high morality is that he never uses his incredible strength for evil, even though no one can stop him from doing whatever he wants.

Saitama telling Genos he’s gotten stronger

Although he may initially rub people the wrong way and seldom shows his emotions to others, it doesn’t mean Saitama doesn’t show care for the people around him or their physical or mental well-being. On some occasions, he’s helped people with their mental issues, such as a suicidal man wanting to jump off a building,[48] and giving words of encouragement to Fubuki about how she should not seek the approval of others but live her life how she wanted.[49] He promised Tareo to stop Garou without killing him,[50] and complemented Genos after the cyborg saved Tatsumaki by claiming that his heart had grown stronger.[51]

While he has no problem killing monsters, Saitama has yet to be seen killing another human and only ever uses enough strength to knock them out. His restraint is so ingrained that no matter the opponent’s power and no matter how much Saitama knows about them, he only kills when he intends to kill, even if he hits someone unexpectedly, such as the number of times he’s knocked out Garou.

Saitama being overcome with grief and anger after Genos’s death

In the Ominous Future, after witnessing the death of Genos and Garou’s brutal actions against the other heroes, Saitama becomes despondent at those and questions his intuition as a hero. Quickly this changes and is replaced by tranquil anger, where he then decides to no longer hold back against Garou. Genos’s death also causes Saitama to lose any potential excitement at facing the Hero Hunter, who, according to Saitama himself, may give him a fight he’s always wanted, showing his depression at his disciple’s end.[52] Garou later comments how people as strong as he and Saitama need others to act as anchors to hold on to so they can remain sane, indicating that such power not only causes a malaise due to a lack of challenges but also the sense of isolation both he and Saitama feel is enough to drive anyone that strong insane.[53]

Saitama motivates Glasses to become stronger

Saitama has proven to be a good figure to other people, both heroes and villains alike. His influence made Genos quiet his revenge wishes and start focusing on training to become a good and strong hero.[54][55] He has also made insecure people like Fubuki and Glasses stand up to their challenges and become better heroes.[56] Saitama also advises King to train and become strong for real, rather than being upset the latter stole credit from his battles.[57]

As Genos notes, Saitama «attracts the strong», as many powerful heroes and villains have taken a liking to him.[58] This is due to his lack of interest in hero ranking and fame that attracts them.[59]

A more recent version of this gag is when he forgot Flashy Flash’s name when he asked Saitama to fix the sword he broke.[60]

Abilities and Powers[]

I became so powerful, no one can beat me.

— Saitama on his strength[61]

Saitama is the titular One-Punch Man and the strongest character in the series. So far, no enemy has been able to injure him in any way, and almost no enemy has been able to survive a single earnest punch from him. A few enemies have survived punches from him, such as any human he has struck (whom he restrains himself against) and Boros, whom Saitama empathized with and held back against so as to give himself and Boros a satisfying and stimulating fight. His strength is so great that it vastly eclipses even artificial beings designed or bred specifically for superhuman combat, such as mechanical beings or the mutated warriors from the House of Evolution. Since no enemies have posed any real challenge to Saitama yet, the upper bound of his strength is likely even higher than it currently appears. While his power is only limited to heightened human traits (he cannot fly or fire energy blasts), his superhuman abilities are more than enough to compensate for the lack of variety in his powers.

The origin of Saitama’s immense strength is mysterious and unclear. Although he tells everyone he got his incredible power through mere physical training, no one believes him at all.[62] According to Saitama, after a year and a half of 100 daily push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, plus 10 km daily running, he had achieved some level of superhuman strength.[62] This training was apparently so intense for Saitama that he at times felt he might die, and claims that it is what caused all of his hair to suddenly and eventually fall out.[62] Genos believes that Saitama himself does not actually know or understand how he gained his power, and hopes to learn the secret by sparring with and observing him,[63] while Dr. Genus believes that Saitama worked out with said training regimen so hard that he had removed his limiter.[64] It should be noted that Saitama would complete all parts of the training one after the other without breaks and was battling monsters that appeared during that time, which would have made completing the training more intense than it would normally be expected.

Genos beating Saitama in an eating contest

Despite his unbelievable physical prowess, Saitama can be outperformed by people with skills in areas outside fighting, like when he was bested by Bang in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors or defeated by King in video games, mostly in one-sided matches.[65][66] Furthermore, he also seems to possess a normal human appetite, as he lost to Genos in a spicy noodle eating contest.[67]

Physical Abilities[]

Saitama destroys a punching machine during the Hero Association entrance examination

Unparalleled Strength: Saitama possesses seemingly limitless physical strength and is capable of effortlessly defeating powerful monsters and villains with a single, casual punch (although this strength is not limited to punches). His punches are so powerful that many monsters simply explode when struck. An example of this casual yet overwhelming offensive power occurs when Saitama launches himself from the top of a building, blasts right through a giant meteor with a punch, lands safely, and calmly decides to go home.[68] Another instance is when Sonic tries to attack Saitama with a sword; he stops the sword by catching it with his teeth, effortlessly shattering the blade with the power of his jaw.[69] When launched from Earth to the moon by Boros, he used his jumping power to return to Earth in mere moments, causing a huge shockwave and leaving a massive crater on the surface of the moon upon departure.[70] A «normal» punch from him was shown to be highly destructive, even to someone as durable as Boros.[71] A single «serious» punch from him was able to counter the latter’s strongest attack, Collapsing Star Roaring Cannon, an attack capable of destroying the entire planet. Not only did Saitama completely negate Boros’ final attack using his serious punch, but the shockwave from the punch was also powerful enough to part clouds on a global scale.[72] When fighting Orochi, the high-speed pressure of the lava fired from his hands was enough to overpower and completely disperse Orochi’s Gaia Cannon, an incredibly powerful attack that drew energy from the Earth’s core and caused worldwide earthquakes.[73] Additionally, he is capable of destroying the Earth if he wanted to,[74] and has threatened to do so when irritated.[75] His strength has been stated by numerous characters to defy reason.[76][77][78] With only one hand, Saitama could lift the entire surface of Io, a moon of Jupiter, launching its wreckage thousands of kilometers into space.[79] In his fight against Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, who had perfectly replicated the power of Saitama’s Serious Punch, a collision of their respective Serious Punch formed a Serious Punch², resulting in immensely powerful waves of energy that threatened to destroy the Earth. After being diverted by Blast and his allies, the energy released from Serious Punch² further travelled into outer space where it (presumably) destroyed numerous star systems in the far distance, leaving a large circle of starless-darkness in space.[80] In the climax of the fight against Garou on Io, Saitama was able to accidentally blow away half the gas of Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, with a Serious Sneeze.[81]

Saitama jumps off the moon

Enhanced Leap: Saitama’s inability to fly is somewhat compensated by his immense leg strength, allowing him to leap tremendous heights/distances at high speeds. This can be seen when Saitama smashed his head through the ceiling of a tall gymnasium during the hero tryouts simply by jumping.[82] He was also able to smash a building into its foundation just by leaping off its roof.[83] His greatest feat in this regard, however, was when he leaped from the surface of the moon and ended up back on Earth in seconds at a specified point, leaving a crater on the moon’s surface in the process.[84] He is also able to jump while still in the air, adjusting his angle of ascent or descent thanks to his amazing power.[85]
Shockwave Generation: As shown in his practice bout with Genos, Saitama can control and direct his power in the form of a massive shockwave from his punches. He uses this to show Genos a glimpse of his true strength but stops it before actually punching Genos, with the shockwave from the attack annihilating an entire cliffside behind him.[86]

Saitama dodging Genos’s attack

Unparalleled Speed and Reflexes: Saitama possesses unparalleled speed and reflexes. So far, no other character has been shown to be faster than him. He was able to complete a 1500-meter dash in an instant during his hero tryouts.[87] He has proven able to effortlessly outpace Speed-o’-Sound Sonic, a ninja whose specialty is his superspeed.[88][89] Even Genos’s computerized targeting systems have difficulty tracking him.[90] Saitama has also shown the ability to run down a building to save a piece of salmon he was having for lunch, and leap back up said building without bystanders noticing he had even done so.[48] His speed is so impressive that he can even outpace Flashy Flash, an S-Class hero well-known for his extraordinary speed, easily dodging his sword swings and catching his ultimate technique.[91] When kicked to the moon by Boros, Saitama was able to return to Earth in mere seconds.[92] In addition, he was capable of easily reacting to and blocking Geryuganshoop’s near-lightspeed rocks, the speed of which being like a bad joke to him.[93]

Saitama travelling across Io at incredibly high speeds

In his fight against evolved monster Garou, Saitama proved himself firmly superior to and able to effortlessly keep up with him, despite the Hero Hunter previously being capable of creating a giant light structure alongside Platinum Sperm in only 0.0013 seconds (1.3 milliseconds) through sheer speed.[94][95][96] Later on, while fighting Garou on Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, after flipping a large amount of ground into the air with his Serious Table Flip, Saitama was capable of covering immensely huge distances by dashing across tons of rubble, having jumped around the natural satellite so fast that a large constellation was created from his sheer speed.[97] When Garou opened a portal to teleport to another location on Io, Saitama was able to appear and attack him from the other side of that same portal before the Hero Hunter could even finish moving through it, suggesting that he was fast enough to even search all of the moon for where the portal led to.[98] Ironically, despite his incomparable reflexes and speed, he still has problems squashing a simple mosquito.[99]

During his training days when he still had his hair, Saitama tried turning his head around super fast to see the back of his head reflected in a mirror. Despite having failed initially, in the end, Saitama was apparently able to catch sight of the back of his head.[100]

Saitama creating countless afterimages

Afterimage Creation: Saitama’s speed allows him to create afterimages of himself. He first used this during his training bout with Genos.[101] He was also able to create countless afterimages via his Serious Side Hops during his fight with Speed-o’-Sound Sonic.[102]
Supernatural Dexterity and Agility: Saitama is capable of moving any of his limbs at extremely fast speeds without flinching, not stopping until his target is completely obliterated. This is seen when he flawlessly whacks all moles on a Whack-A-Mole machine during the Hero Association exam.[103] He has been shown to be perfect at dodging and performing highly acrobatic maneuvers.[104] His reflexes render him flexible enough to move through the narrowest creeks and dodge attacks at the closest proximity.[105][106] When bombarded by multiple giant bullets from Boros’s ship, despite being in mid-air, Saitama could evade all the projectiles before kicking one of them back to the ship itself.[107]
Water Running: Saitama is capable of running across ocean high-speed without going into the surface of water.[108]

Superhuman Stamina: Saitama has never been shown to tire out when fighting enemies. Even when unleashing a punch more powerful than a planet-destroying attack, Saitama showed no signs of fatigue.[92] The only time Saitama was shown to be panting and out of breath from continuous running, he recovered just seconds later.[109]

Supernatural Senses: Saitama’s senses are far beyond the human norm. He possesses impressively sharp hearing, being able to pick up on various chatter from bystanders a good distance away even while fighting monsters and the like.[110] He can even hear phone transmissions with well enough accuracy to gauge conversation and the contents of its dialogue.[46] Furthermore, Saitama’s eyesight is superhuman. After being kicked to the Moon by Boros, he could pinpoint the location of the giant spaceship and land back on it from a distance a little more than one light-second.[92] His tracking capability is also astonishing, as he can concentrate on a fast-moving object for a long time and still not lose sight of it, as seen when he was the only person to see where Garou escaped to.[111][112] He is also able to see in the dark, as he was able to spot a kid a great distance away during the night.[113]

Invulnerability: Saitama possesses unparalleled toughness and durability. He can withstand blows from extremely powerful beings such as Carnage Kabuto and even Boros without suffering any injury or feeling any pain.[114] In fact, no character has actually been able to damage, or even physically harm Saitama in any way. When Genos created a huge, spherical blast of flame to kill Mosquito Girl’s mosquitoes, Saitama remained standing right next to him completely unharmed (though his clothes were burnt).[115] He even survived the harsh conditions of outer space unscathed during his brief time on the moon.[116] It has been shown that, despite the dangers of holding one’s breath in space, Saitama can do so with no negative effects on his body. Another testament to his astonishing durability is that Garou, who, despite having gained enormous strength from monsterization, still could not inflict even the slightest damage on Saitama during their fight.[94][95] Notably, he was capable of withstanding Garou’s Extreme Fa Jin, an attack powerful enough to raise up a large landmass all the way on the other side of the planet, without any damage taken at all.[96] Against Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, who has become influenced by «God», a mysterious entity that possesses frightening supernatural powers, Saitama could easily withstand nuclear explosions generated by the Hero Hunter’s Nuclear Fission at point-blank.[117] Even after taking Garou’s Gamma Ray Burst head-on, he emerged unscathed from the energy blast that was narratively described to be the same phenomenon as a gamma ray burst, the most powerful type of explosion known in the universe.[118] In his fight against Garou on a moon of Jupiter, he was able to take many attacks from the foe, and despite the Hero Hunter constantly duplicating the power of his own Serious Punch in an attempt to overcome him, Saitama came out victorious without visible damage.[119]

Saitama prefers to dodge or block attacks using edged weapons,[120][121] rather than take them head-on, as he sometimes does with strikes from fists or blunt objects. However, Nyan’s powerful claws, which can cut buildings into pieces, were shown unable to affect Saitama’s head, indicating that his skin is highly resistance to piercing damage as well.[122] Additionally, Garou’s Whirlwind Iron Cutting Fist could only destroy Saitama’s clothing without cutting the skin underneath.[123]

Saitama holding his breath on the moon with no difficulty

Vacuum Adaptation: Saitama has considerable control over his breath. Even in outer space, he manages to hold his breath effortlessly, and he even made a jump back to the Earth from the Moon in seconds with no signs of suffocation.[124] His body has been shown to even adapt to and survive in the vacuum of space unscathed. Several factors, like a lack of atmosphere and increased radiation exposure, are at play here, although Saitama was not affected by any of them.[125] This was prominently shown in his fight against Garou on Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, where he was unaffected by the thin and unbreathable atmosphere there.[126]

Saitama submerging in lava with no problem

Temperature Resistance: Saitama is extremely resistant to all types of temperature-based attacks. When Genos created a huge, spherical blast of flame to incinerate Mosquito Girl’s mosquitoes, Saitama remained standing next to the cyborg unperturbed and completely unharmed (although his clothes were burnt to a crisp).[127] Despite being completely frozen by Withered Sprout, he was able to instantly shatter the ice and free himself, completely unfazed by the monster’s cryokinesis.[128] He has shown capable of tolerating Io’s surface temperature that averages about minus 130 degrees Celsius,[129] for at least some time and while naked.[119] Additionally, Saitama is capable of submerging himself in lava with no trouble, viewing it as a nice hot tub.[73] Even Boros’s ability to project energy with intense heat that melts sections of the giant spaceship, could not faze him.[92] Saitama can also withstand multiple nuclear explosions point-blank, tolerating the intense heat from them without even flinching.[117] This ability can be attributed to him refusing to use either the air conditioner or heater during his training.

Radiation Resistance: Saitama has been shown to be unaffected by radiation. When he was kicked to the moon by Boros, he was not affected by the increased level of radiation in space. When fighting Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, Saitama was unfazed by nuclear explosions created from the Hero Hunter, meeting them head-on.[130] He could also stand near Garou unbothered, despite the latter’s mere presence being radioactive enough to kill many other heroes close by within mere moments and even endanger all life on Earth.[118] Furthermore, after being directly hit by Garou’s Gamma Ray Burst, a powerful energy blast that was described to be the same phenomenon as a gamma ray burst, Saitama emerged unscathed from the high level of radiation contained in the beam.[117][118]

Psychic Resistance: In the original webcomic, Fubuki noted that Saitama is extremely resistant to any psychic attacks due to his astonishing willpower.[131] It is noteworthy to know that his muscles merely «twitched» when Tatsumaki used her psychic powers on him and that she wasn’t able to keep Saitama up in the air for more than a few seconds because he was «too heavy».[131] This demonstrates that Saitama is not completely immune to the effects of psychokinesis.

Pain Suppression: Saitama could still suppress pain even before gaining his overwhelming power.[132][133] This has been shown on numerous occasions dating back to his days as a middle school student, taking a beating from two upper-level students and, later Piggy Bancon, a Wolf-level threat. He then got back up when the bullies could not and chased after the pig-like monster for his money.[134] Other similar feats include taking strikes from Crablante and Personification Of A Light Pull Cord during his training as an adult among others.

Accelerated Development: Nearly a year into his training regiment, Saitama noted that as a result of his repetitive routine, his body had adapted to «moving like a hero should»,[133] and his power began to explode at a rapid rate. In no time at all, he reached unparalleled levels of strength, speed, and durability through this regiment, a testament to his growth rate; however, according to Genos, Saitama himself cannot explain the secret behind his strength, and the cyborg believes that he should not have become that unbelievably powerful with only that level of training.[62] This was further shown in his fight with Garou on Io, as Saitama’s growth rate began to soar exponentially due to the upsurge of emotion he had never previously experienced.[119]

Supernatural Abilities[]

Saitama enters Phoenix Space, a spiritual space

Non-Physical Interaction: In a case of his strength defying normal logic, Saitama broke a hole into the Phoenix Space, a spiritual realm that only exists within Phoenix Man’s bird costume, by simply knocking on it, demonstrating an ability to interact with non-physical things, much to Phoenix Man’s confusion.[135]

  • Spatial Interaction: Saitama is capable of grabbing onto the spatial portals created by Garou to redirect them,[136] and can even kick them away to prevent the Hero Hunter from opening up a portal directly beneath him, much to Garou’s shock.[137]

Technique Mimicry: Saitama possesses the ability to copy powers and techniques that he witnesses in battle. According to Garou, Saitama is capable of replicating all of the Hero Hunter’s techniques and improving them even further, just by witnessing them once. The sheer extent that this mimicry ability possesses is logic-defying, as he was even able to copy Garou’s ability to travel through time.[119]

Saitama traveling through time

  • Time Travel: A technique passed on to Saitama by Garou. After observing Garou’s ability to manipulate particles within his body on sub-atomic level and force them to behave like anti-particles, Saitama could copy and further improve it in order to time leap. After successfully going to the past, he managed to quickly defeat Garou and prevent the Ominous Future from happening again.[119]

Fighting Style[]

Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Despite having no formal training, Saitama is a proficient and adept hand-to-hand combatant. Thanks to many fights with monsters and villains during his training, he’s got a fair amount of fighting experience. Due to his immeasurable power and boredom, he usually does not care about technique and uses basic attacks. Unlike martial artists, his fighting style is quite simple but solid when backed by his absolute strength. However, in his fight against Garou on Io, it’s revealed that Saitama is an incredibly quick learner and if he so wishes, he can grasp and master any martial arts techniques after seeing them once.

Saitama also uses karate chops,[138] and grappling moves to take down villains he doesn’t want to kill, or just to knock out people who pick on him.

Improvisation: Saitama is very proficient with improvised weapons, such as when he killed his first monster by deftly using his tie to grab the monster’s eye and tear out his intestines. He is proficient at improvising in general; whenever he can’t solve a fight with a punch or directly can’t punch his foe, he always comes up with a solution in one way or another and uses unique moves supported by his immeasurable power. Some of these instances are with his Serious Table Flip,[139][140] and his Serious Headbutt.[141]

Supernatural Accuracy: Saitama seems to have almost perfect precision since whenever he focuses on a target, he always strikes it. He can turn a rock into a deadly projectile that hits its target, as shown when he killed Geryuganshoop. He also had no trouble landing directly on Boros’s ship from the moon, even though the angle to return to Earth was extremely small, leaving little room for error.

Normal Series: Saitama’s Normal Series consists of techniques in which he puts very little effort into attacking. Even though his attacks are loose in this style, most opponents tend to be finished off easily due to Saitama’s tremendous strength and speed.

  • Normal Punch (普通のパンチ, Futsū no Panchi): Saitama punches his opponent. Even though Saitama puts very little to no effort into his punch, it is still strong enough to kill almost every opponent, including Dragon-level threats, blowing apart their bodies, crushing their skulls and bones or even beheading them. When facing humans, however, Saitama holds back greatly, only using enough strength to knock them out.

Saitama using Consecutive Normal Punches

  • Consecutive Normal Punches (連続普通のパンチ, Renzoku Futsū no Panchi): Saitama launches a volley of quick, single-handed punches from his right hand.[142] He can use this technique with both hands if wanted to.[143] These blows are powerful enough to blow strong or large body types apart into pieces.[144] Boros was only able to survive this attack using his intense regenerative abilities.[145]
    • Two-Handed Consecutive Normal Punches (両手・連続普通のパンチ, Ryōte Renzoku Futsū no Panchi): Saitama launches a volley of quick punches from both hands instead of one.[146] This technique was named in the original webcomic, while in the manga, he simply refers to it as Consecutive Normal Punches whether he wants to use one or both hands for the technique.[147]

Killer Move: Serious Series (必殺マジシリーズ, Hissatsu Majishirīzu): In Serious Series, Saitama puts more effort into his attacks. His face looks more serious when he performs these «serious» attacks. Despite the incredible strength behind them, Saitama does not actually consider these moves to be anything special.[148]

Saitama using Serious Punch

  • Serious Punch (マジ殴り, Maji Naguri): Saitama throws an extremely powerful punch. One of his punches was so strong that not only did it completely negate Boros’s Collapsing Star Roaring Cannon, a beam capable of wiping out an entire planet,[149] but the shockwave from the punch alone was also potent enough to part the clouds on a global scale, as well as deliver the final, fatal blow to Boros. The alien leader also declared that Saitama’s finishing blow on him was not even near his true power and that Saitama was still holding back.[150] He also used this move to obliterate Elder Centipede, a Dragon-level threat and one of the biggest monsters in the series.[151] When used against Evil Natural Water, who has become one with the ocean, Saitama was able to dissipate its form and split the ocean entirely.[152] In his fight with Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, the latter having perfectly replicated Saitama’s Serious Punch along with its power, a collision of their respective Serious Punch created a Serious Punch², which resulted in immensely powerful waves of energy that threatened to destroy the Earth. After being diverted by Blast and three of his allies, the energy released from Serious Punch² further travelled into space where it (presumably) destroyed numerous star systems in the far distance,[153] leaving a massive hole of starless-darkness in the cosmos, with the recoil launching both Saitama and Garou to Jupiter’s moon Io.

    Saitama using Omnidirectional Serious Punch

    • Omnidirectional Serious Punch (全方位マジ殴り, Zenhōi Maji Naguri): Saitama leaps from multiple angles to create a series of afterimages which all then surround and strike the opponents with a Serious Punch, seemingly leaving no room for them to escape. He first used this attack against Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, who attempted to flee through a hyperspace portal to avoid the attack.[154]
  • Serious Side Hops (マジ反復横とび, Maji Hanpukuyokotobi; Viz: Serious Sideways Jumps): Saitama rapidly hops from side to side, creating a wall of afterimages. He is able to walk forward while doing so, and the shockwaves caused by it were enough to easily render unconscious Speed-o’-Sound Sonic, even with his ten afterimages.[155]
  • Serious Squirt Gun (マジ水鉄砲, Maji Mizudeppō; Viz: Serious Water Gun): Saitama uses his hands in liquid to squirt a super high-pressured stream. He used this move while submerged in lava to completely overpower Orochi’s Gaia Cannon which was an extremely powerful attack that drew energy from the very core of the Earth itself.[73]

Saitama performs Serious Table Flip

  • Serious Table Flip (マジちゃぶ台返し, Maji Chabudai-Gaeshi): Saitama digs his fingers into the ground and flips a large amount of ground into the air.[156] He first used this technique against Garou while they were on Io, which completely ripped apart the moon, even sending its fragments into outer space.[157] In the original webcomic, this move was first used on Garou in Z-City, which flipped over the Monster Association Headquarters.[158] Because of the magnitude of the effect, Garou experienced profound distortions in his sense of equilibrium.[159][160]
  • Saitama using Serious Sneeze

  • … and devastates the large planet

  • Serious Sneeze (マジ嚔, Maji Kushami): Saitama simply lets out a sneeze. In his fight with Garou on Io, a sneeze from Saitama ended up travelling great distances before hitting Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, and devastating it.[119]
  • Serious Headbutt (マジ頭突き, Maji Zuzuki): Saitama headbutts his target. In the original webcomic, he used this move to counter a punch from Garou and break his arm.[161]

Miscellaneous Abilities[]

Keen Perception: Saitama has an uncanny ability to see through a person’s facade and understand their deepest motivations for acting the way they do. He repeatedly proves this by reading people like Fubuki and Glasses. In a similar vein, he learns of King’s deception quickly but opts to keep it to himself. Nonetheless, he excels at it only when he takes it seriously. He is also the first person to recognize Garou’s inner turmoil and the fact that the Hero Hunter was always hoping to be a hero and not a monster.[citation needed]

Power Control: Despite his overwhelming and immeasurable physical strength, Saitama has shown to have control over his power. The potency of his attacks is well-managed, and it depends on exactly how much effort Saitama wants to put into his fist. In doing so, he can minimize and avoid collateral damage to the environment. While he is capable of effortlessly obliterating powerful Dragon-level Mysterious Beings,[61] and parting clouds across the entire planet with his punches,[92] Saitama can still strike weaker opponents such as humans or criminals with barely enough force to knock them out without causing any real serious or life-threatening injuries to them.[162]

Saitama shattering Sonic’s sword using his jaw

Strong Teeth: In one of his fights with Sonic, the latter attacks him with a sword, which the Caped Baldy replies via biting and destroying said sword with no effort.[69]

Strong Farts: In his fight with Garou, after getting a stomachache and being sent flying away, Saitama let out a strong fart that the propulsion from said flatulence gave him enough momentum to soon catch up to the Hero Hunter.[163]

Intimidation: Even though he does not look scary at first glance, those aware of Saitama’s powers are afraid of him. Sonic and Genos were left amazed and frightened by Saitama’s ability to emit a «powerful aura,» which made his opponents tremble and feel under pressure. When confronted by someone Saitama dislikes or finds annoying, all he has to do is threaten them with a few choice words, and they will cower in fear.

Indomitable Will: Saitama has been shown to possess incredible willpower. It is most evident in the flashback to his hero training regime. Even if he was in great pain, or could barely move, or vomited blood, he continued his training.[164] Through sheer willpower and effort, Saitama removed his natural limiter and became an invincible hero.

Saitama’s willpower is also evident in his fight with Tatsumaki. His strength of will is directly connected to his psychic resistance. Tatsumaki, the strongest known esper in the universe, was unable to bend Saitama or lift him into space, exclaiming for the latter that he was «too heavy», although this was while she was injured.[131]

Surfing Skills: Saitama has displayed the ability to balance an entire aircraft carrier and keep it stable as he surfs it down a gargantuan wave.[165]

  • (To Genos) «I’m not looking for disciples.»[169]
  • (To Genos, Dr. Genus and Carnage Kabuto) «The true power of us human beings is that we can change ourselves on our own.»[170]
  • (To Glasses) «Do you honestly think you won’t get any stronger for the rest of your life? Instead of sitting around frustrated, it’s better to keep moving forward. I’m going now. Today is a special day in case you didn’t know. The market is selling veggies at 30% off.»[56]
  • (While jumping toward the meteor) «You will not fall on my town!»[171]
  • (To an opposing crowd) «Let me make one thing clear! I’m not working as a hero because I want you morons to admire me! I do it because I want to!»[172]
  • (To Boros) «You’re still conscious? You really are strong.»[173]
  • (To King) «Is it true? All the rumors about your strength and fight history were a lie?»[174]
  • (To King) «Just become strong.»[175]
  • (To Fubuki) «You won’t survive. You don’t get what hero means. There are a lot of incredibly strong bad guys in the world. Those who oppose them are called heroes. Even if they are alone. You, who gathers weaker subordinates to feel strong, won’t make it. At this rate, you are gonna cry sooner or later. When a monster stronger than you shows up, none of your subordinates will save you. Factions? Newbie crushing? Keeping your ranks? They have nothing to do with anything! Don’t look down on heroes, you moron!»[176]
  • (To Suiryu) «Those impurities you were talking about have nothing to do with anything. Your name is Suiryu, right? You aren’t the only one doing what he wants to do. I’ll give you some advice too: If your goal is to have fun, then it would be best if you don’t become any stronger than you are now.»[177]
  • (To King) «I never could have imagined that being a hero would be so lonely…»[178]
  • (Referring to God) «If you got something to say, show your face! I’ll still punch you out, though.»[179]
  • «I usually arrive too late.. Do I really have.. a hero’s intuition? Sure doesn’t seem like it…»[180]
  • (To Garou) «I only need one hand to beat you»[181]

Warning.png Expand to see original webcomic information. Beware of spoiler content.

  • (To Garou) «With that attack, I now know that you are sort of strong. I might even say very strong… But it’s not clear.»[182]
  • (To Garou) «Really, Garou. So you did have an «image of an ideal hero» inside of you. I see now. I now understand what you wanted to do. Even though you said you wanted to be a «monster of absolute evil»… What you really wanted to be was a hero. You compromised and decided to be a monster. To bring about world peace, you took the easy route, thinking a monster’s job was quicker and easier than a hero’s. A monster role is simpler; after all, all you had to do was defeat heroes. It’s perfect for someone with no confidence like you. BUT YOU CAN NEVER DEFEAT ME. Peace made by ruling the world with fear can’t succeed as long as you can’t defeat me. It will never work. It’s absolutely impossible for you. Your compromised monster hobby! VS my serious hero hobby! Even if that’s all I had, I still wouldn’t lose! It was a mistake to lower the hurdle right before the goal. A half-assed objective can’t succeed. But what about «next time?» What will you do next?»[183]
  • (To Sweet Mask) «Dude, no… I’m not gonna let this little brawl turn into a murder. This matter’s already been settled.«[184]
  • (To Sweet Mask) «Would an ideal hero care about the attention of others? Compared to that, how do you view yourself? Isn’t how you view yourself more important? After all, we’re human.»[185]
  • «You should go and become your own ideal hero.»[186]

Trivia[]

  • Saitama’s hero profile number is 03402.[187]
  • Saitama is ranked 1st in the character popularity poll.[188]
    • On the other hand, young Saitama is ranked 10th in the character popularity poll.[189]
  • Near the beginning of the manga’s story, the color of Saitama’s cape was red (House of Evolution Arc) but was later changed to white (Giant Meteor Arc).

Saitama is the main protagonist of One Punch Man. He appeared in the 41st One Minute Melee and Season 3 Finale, Saitama VS Superman, where he fought with the Man of Steel, Superman from DC Comics. He also appeared in the Season 5 finale, fighting against Goku from Dragon Ball Z.

Bio[]

After saving a child from a monster named Crablante, an emotionally broken man named Saitama realized that he didn’t want to be a business man, but a hero who could defeat his enemies in a single punch. And so, Saitama started a strict training regimen: 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and a 10 km run, every single day. After 3 years, he had become the hero that he said he’d become, at the cost of his hair. Unfortunately, because he could end all of his fights with one punch, Saitama became bored since he could never feel the thrill of a real fight anymore. All of this changed when he met Genos, a cyborg who was nearly killed in a battle with a being known as Mosquito Girl. With Genos, Saitama joined the hero association, where he met heroes such as the cowardly liar King, and the martial arts master Bang, and fought a large variety of foes, including the dominator of the universe, Lord Boros, and the human monster Garou.

One Minute Melee[]

Goku VS Sonic (Dragon Ball Z VS Sonic the Hedgehog)[]

As he was walking around the city, minding his own business, Saitama bumped into Goku when the latter was about to eat his delicious ham and then he got angered and punched him in the back. In response, Saitama appeared behind Goku and punched him in the face so hard, his entire body got blown to pieces. Afterwards, he felt his head getting hit by Superman’s heat vision as the latter appeared behind him.

Saitama VS Superman (One Punch Man VS DC Comics)[]

Saitama was confronted by Superman who believed that the destruction that happened in the city was caused by him. At first he tried to clear his name and avoid a fight with Superman, but after realizing he had no choice, Saitama decided to fight him. After a good deal of fighting, Superman lead Saitama to an unpopulated area in Africa where they can fight without putting the entire city and it’s civilians in danger. Afterwards, they fought on for quite a while, evenly matched, until Superman resorted to using his Super Flare against him which left the area burning yet Saitama was completely unharmed. Afterwards, Saitama’s truth was finally backed up by Black Widow who explained to Superman that it was really Goku who caused all of that destruction. After Superman apologized for accusing him, Saitama walked off into the distance, asking him for a rematch when he’s fully energized again and saying that it was the most fun for him in a while.

Goku Vs Saitama[]

Saitama fought against Goku and defeated him in two separate fights.

DBX[]

In DBX, Saitama fought against Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star. Genos runs in to take him on, but is defeated. Saitama punches him into the space after taking a punch, but that punch, after Kenshiro being killed, blows up Saitama’s head. He returns where he fights Superman

Instead, it is the mentaility of Saitama and how he is able to understand other people’s mentalities.[2] The idea was that the super hero became bored and instead dealt with daily chores.[3] One felt difficulties in drawing scenarios for Saitama due to how overpowered he was.

Aritist Yusuke Murata initially drew him «cool» alongside the entire cast. In that process he was making Saitama look handsome, or adding stars in his eyes, but all of these ideas were scrapped. In the end, those things did not fit Saitama’s nature. He changed it since One’s ideas of Saitama was the complete opposite. Nevertheless he had fun when drawing the character.[3] The idea of the blank expression Saitama tends to make were done intentionally for comedic effect.

During his fight with Garou, Saitama initially displayed his unconcerned attitude against the Human Monster, from playful banter to compliments on Garou’s capability, even though Garou could cause enough damage to level cities and even warp the earth with a single strike.

Saitama telling Genos he’s gotten stronger.

While he may initially rub people the wrong way and seldom shows his emotions to others, it doesn’t mean Saitama doesn’t show care for the people around him or their physical or mental well-being. On some occasions, he’s helped people with their mental issues, such as a suicidal man wanting to jump off a building,[45] and giving words of encouragement to Fubuki about how she should not seek the approval of others but live her life how she wanted.[46] He promised Tareo to stop Garou without killing him,[47] and complemented Genos after the cyborg saved Tatsumaki by claiming his heart had grown stronger.[48]

After the death of Genos and witnessing Garou’s brutal actions against the other heroes, Saitama becomes despondent at those and questions his intuition as a hero. Quickly this changes and is replaced by tranquil anger, where Saitama then decides to no longer hold back against Garou. Genos’s death also causes Saitama to lose any potential excitement at facing Garou, who, according to Saitama himself, may give him a fight he’s always wanted, showing his depression at his disciple’s end.[49] Garou later comments how people as strong as he and Saitama need others to act as anchors to hold on to so they can remain sane, indicating that such power not only causes a malaise due to a lack of challenges but also the sense of isolation both he and Saitama feel is enough to drive anyone that strong insane.

Saitama turning the civilians against him

The most surprising thing about Saitama is that he is actually one of the most morally upstanding heroes in the story. Saitama is very humble, as he purposefully let the masses turn against him in order for the defeated heroes to be given credit for their efforts against the Deep Sea King, even claiming that they had weakened the monster before his arrival wanting to give credit to the heroes that were actually risking their lives to protect innocent people.[50] Saitama did the same for the police station, killing a monster while disguised as a police officer, despite potentially gaining much fame had he revealed who he actually was as he heard the Hero Association executive try to force the police to beg for assistance exclaiming that, «Police and heroes don’t help people because someone had to beg».[51] This is also his outlook on being a hero as he told Genos, «If heroes run and hide, who will stand and fight». He also did not mind that King took credit for all of his achievements.[52] One of the most understated signs of Saitama’s high morality is that he never uses his incredible strength for evil, even though no one can stop him from doing whatever he wants.

Saitama demonstrates impressive restraint with his power, considering that he is easily capable of splitting the sky or jumping from the Moon to Earth in seconds.[53] He successfully beat nearly all of his opponents with a single punch, though he occasionally causes more destruction than necessary.[54] While he has no problem killing monsters, Saitama has yet to be seen killing another human and only ever uses enough strength to knock them out. His restraint is so ingrained that no matter the opponent’s power and no matter how much Saitama knows about them, he only kills when he intends to kill, even if he hits someone unexpectedly, such as the number of times he’s knocked out Garou.

Saitama motivates Glasses to become stronger

Saitama has proven to be a good figure to other people, both heroes and villains alike. His influence made Genos quiet his revenge wishes and start focusing on training to become a good and strong hero.[55][56] He has also made insecure people like Fubuki and Glasses stand up to their challenges and become better heroes.[57] Saitama also advises King to train and become strong for real, rather than being upset the latter stole credit from his battles.[58]

As Genos notes, he «attracts the strong», as many powerful heroes and villains have taken a liking to him, and few even look up to him as a role model to follow.[59]

Warning.png Expand to see original webcomic information. Beware of spoiler content.

A more recent version of this gag is when he forgot Flashy Flash’s name when he asked Saitama to fix the sword he broke.[citation needed]

Abilities and Powers[]

I became so powerful, no one can beat me.

— Saitama on his strength[60]

Saitama is the titular One-Punch Man and the strongest, fastest and most durable character in the series.

Although he tells everyone he got his incredible power through mere physical training, no one believes him at all.[61] According to Saitama, after a year and a half of 100 daily push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, plus 10 km daily running, he had achieved some level of superhuman strength.[61] This training was apparently so intense for Saitama that he at times felt he might die, and claims that it is what caused all of his hair to suddenly and eventually fall out.[61] Genos believes that Saitama himself does not actually know or understand how he gained his power, and hopes to learn the secret by sparring with and observing him,[62] while Dr. Genus believes that Saitama worked out with said training regimen so hard that he had removed his limiter.[63] It should be noted that Saitama would complete all parts of the training one after the other without breaks and was battling monsters that appeared during that time, which would have made completing the training more intense than it would normally be expected.

Genos beating Saitama in an eating contest

Despite his unbelievable physical prowess, Saitama can be outperformed by people with skills in areas outside fighting, like when he was bested by Bang in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors or defeated by King in video games, mostly in one-sided matches.[64][65] Furthermore, he also seems to possess a normal human appetite, as he lost to Genos in a spicy noodle eating contest.[66]

An example of this casual yet overwhelming offensive power occurs when Saitama launches himself from the top of a building, blasts right through a giant meteor with a punch, lands safely, and calmly decides to go home.[67] Another instance is when Sonic tries to attack Saitama with a sword; he stops the sword by catching it with his teeth, effortlessly shattering the blade with the power of his jaw.[68] When launched from Earth to the moon by Boros, he used his jumping power to return to Earth in mere moments, causing a huge shockwave and leaving a massive crater on the surface of the moon upon departure.[69] A «normal» punch from him was shown to be highly destructive, even to someone as durable as Boros.[70] A single «serious» punch from him was able to counter the latter’s strongest attack, Collapsing Star Roaring Cannon, an attack capable of destroying the entire planet. Not only did Saitama completely negate Boros’ final attack using his serious punch, but the shockwave from the punch was also powerful enough to part clouds on a global scale.[71] When fighting Orochi, the high-speed pressure of the lava fired from his hands was enough to overpower and completely disperse Orochi’s Gaia Cannon, an incredibly powerful attack that drew energy from the Earth’s core and caused worldwide earthquakes.[72] Additionally, he is capable of destroying the Earth if he wanted to,[73] and has threatened to do so when irritated.[74] His strength has been stated by numerous characters to defy reason.[75][76][77] In his fight against Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, a collision of their respective Serious Punch formed a Serious Punch², resulting in an immensely powerful shockwave of energy that Blast feared would destroy the Earth. After being diverted by Blast and his allies, the energy unleashed by their attack travelled into outer space where it (presumably) obliterated a large number of star systems in the far distance, leaving a large circle of starless-darkness in space and the recoil launched both Saitama and Garou from Earth to Io.[78]

Saitama jumps off the moon

Enhanced Leap: Saitama’s inability to fly is somewhat compensated by his immense leg strength, allowing him to leap tremendous heights/distances at high speeds. This can be seen when Saitama smashed his head through the ceiling of a tall gymnasium during the hero tryouts simply by jumping.[79] He was also able to smash a building into its foundation just by leaping off its roof.[80] His greatest feat in this regard, however, was when he leaped from the surface of the moon and ended up back on Earth in seconds at a specified point, leaving a crater on the moon’s surface in the process.[81] He is also able to jump while still in the air, adjusting his angle of ascent or descent thanks to his amazing power.[82]
Shockwave Generation: As shown in his practice bout with Genos, Saitama can control and direct his power in the form of a massive shockwave from his punches. He uses this to show Genos a glimpse of his true strength but stops it before actually punching Genos, with the shockwave from the attack annihilating an entire cliffside behind him.[83]

Saitama dodging Genos’s attack

Unparalleled Speed and Reflexes: Saitama possesses unparalleled speed and reflexes. So far, no other character has been shown to be faster than him. He was able to complete a 1500-meter dash in an instant during his hero tryouts.[84] He has proven able to effortlessly outpace Speed-o’-Sound Sonic, a ninja whose specialty is his superspeed.[85][86] Even Genos’s computerized targeting systems have difficulty tracking him.[87] Saitama has also shown the ability to run down a building to save a piece of salmon he was having for lunch, and leap back up said building without bystanders noticing he had even done so.[45] His speed is so impressive that he can even outpace Flashy Flash, an S-Class hero well-known for his extraordinary speed, easily dodging his sword swings and catching his ultimate technique.[88] When kicked to the moon by Boros, Saitama was able to return to Earth in mere seconds.[89] In addition, he was capable of easily reacting to and blocking Geryuganshoop’s near-lightspeed rocks, the speed of which being like a bad joke to him.[90]

In his fight against evolved monster Garou, Saitama proved himself firmly superior to and able to effortlessly keep up with him, despite the Hero Hunter previously being capable of creating a giant light structure alongside Platinum Sperm in only 0.0013 seconds (1.3 milliseconds) through sheer speed.[91][92][93] Later on, while fighting Garou on Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, after flipping a large amount of ground thousands of meters into the air with his Serious Table Flip, Saitama was capable of covering immensely large distances by dashing through tons of rubble to pummel the Hero Hunter, having travelled across Io so fast that a large constellation was created from his sheer speed.[94] When Garou opened a portal to teleport to another location on Io, Saitama was able to appear and attack him from the other side of that same portal before the Hero Hunter could even finish moving through it, suggesting that he was fast enough to even search all of the moon for where the portal led to.[95]

During his training days when he still had his hair, Saitama tried turning his head around super fast to see the back of his head reflected in a mirror. Despite having failed initially, in the end, Saitama was apparently able to catch sight of the back of his head.[96] Ironically, despite his incomparable reflexes and speed, he still has problems squashing a simple mosquito.[97]

Saitama creating countless afterimages

Afterimage Creation: Saitama’s speed allows him to create afterimages of himself. He first used this during his training bout with Genos.[98] He was also able to create countless afterimages via his Serious Side Hops during his fight with Speed-o’-Sound Sonic.[99]
Supernatural Dexterity and Agility: Saitama is capable of moving any of his limbs at extremely fast speeds without flinching, not stopping until his target is completely obliterated. This is seen when he flawlessly whacks all moles on a Whack-A-Mole machine during the Hero Association exam.[100] He has been shown to be perfect at dodging and performing highly acrobatic maneuvers.[101] His reflexes render him flexible enough to move through the narrowest creeks and dodge attacks at the closest proximity.[102][103] When bombarded by multiple giant bullets from Boros’s ship, despite being in mid-air, Saitama could evade all the projectiles before kicking one of them back to the ship itself.[104]
Water Running: Saitama is capable of running across ocean high-speed without going into the surface of water.[105]

Superhuman Stamina: Saitama has never been shown to tire out when fighting enemies. Even when unleashing a punch more powerful than a planet-destroying attack, Saitama showed no signs of fatigue.[89] The only time Saitama was shown to be panting and out of breath from continuous running, he recovered just seconds later.[106]

Supernatural Senses: Saitama’s senses are far beyond the human norm. He possesses impressively sharp hearing, being able to pick up on various chatter from bystanders a good distance away even while fighting monsters and the like.[107] He can even hear phone transmissions with well enough accuracy to gauge conversation and the contents of its dialogue.[51] Saitama is also able to see in the dark, as he was able to spot a kid a great distance away during the night.[108] His tracking capability is also astonishing, as he can concentrate on a fast-moving object for a long time and still not lose sight of it, as seen when he was the only person to see where Garou escaped to.[109][110]

Invulnerability: Saitama possesses unparalleled toughness and durability. He can withstand blows from extremely powerful beings such as Carnage Kabuto and even Boros without suffering any injury or feeling any pain.[111] In fact, no character has actually been able to damage, or even physically harm Saitama in any way. When Genos created a huge, spherical blast of flame to kill Mosquito Girl’s mosquitoes, Saitama remained standing right next to him completely unharmed (though his clothes were burnt).[112] He also survived being kicked to the moon by Boros in his fully powered state, and going from the Earth to the moon and back with no damage from leaving and entering the Earth’s atmosphere (only his clothes were slightly burnt). He even survived the harsh conditions of outer space unscathed during his brief time on the moon.[113] It has been shown that, despite the dangers of holding one’s breath in space, Saitama can do so with no negative effects on his body. Another testament to his astonishing durability is that Garou, who, despite having gained enormous strength from monsterization, still could not inflict even the slightest damage on Saitama during their fight.[91][92] Notably, he was capable of withstanding Garou’s Extreme Fa Jin, an attack powerful enough to move oceanic plates and make a continent raise up from the other side of the planet, without any damage taken at all.[93] Against Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, who has been mutated by «God», a mysterious entity that possesses frightening supernatural powers, Saitama could easily withstand nuclear explosions generated by the Hero Hunter’s Nuclear Fission at point-blank.[114] Even after taking Garou’s Gamma Ray Burst head-on, Saitama emerged unscathed from the energy blast that was implied to be the same phenomenon as a gamma ray burst, the most powerful type of explosion known in the universe.[115]

Saitama prefers to dodge or block attacks using edged weapons,[116][117] rather than take them head-on, as he sometimes does with strikes from fists or blunt objects. However, Nyan’s powerful claws, which can cut buildings into pieces, were shown unable to affect Saitama’s head, indicating that his skin is highly resistance to piercing damage as well.[118] Additionally, Garou’s Whirlwind Iron Cutting Fist could only destroy Saitama’s clothing without cutting the skin underneath.[119]

Immense Psychic Resistance: Fubuki noted that Saitama is extremely resistant to any psychic attacks due to his astonishing willpower.[120]
It is noteworthy to know that his muscles merely «twitched» when Tatsumaki used her psychic powers on him and that she wasn’t able to keep Saitama up in the air for more than a few seconds because he was «too heavy».[120] This demonstrates that Saitama is not completely immune to the effects of psychokinesis.

Saitama holding his breath on the moon with no difficulty

Vacuum Adaptation: Saitama has considerable control over his breath. Even in outer space, he manages to hold his breath effortlessly, and he even made a jump back to the Earth from the Moon in seconds with no signs of suffocation.[121] His body has been shown to even adapt to and survive in the vacuum of space unscathed. Several factors, like a lack of atmosphere and increased radiation exposure, are at play here, although Saitama was not affected by any of them.[122] This was prominently shown in his fight against Garou on Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, where he was unaffected by the thin and unbreathable atmosphere there.[123]

Saitama submerging in lava with no problem

Temperature Resistance: Saitama is extremely resistant to all types of temperature-based attacks. When Genos created a huge, spherical blast of flame to incinerate Mosquito Girl’s mosquitoes, Saitama remained standing next to the cyborg unperturbed and completely unharmed (although his clothes were burnt to a crisp).[124] Despite being completely frozen by Withered Sprout, he was able to instantly shatter the ice and free himself, completely unfazed by the monster’s assault.[125] Saitama is also capable of submerging himself in lava with no trouble, viewing it as a nice hot tub.[72] This ability can be attributed to him refusing to use either the air conditioner or heater during his training.

Radiation Resistance: Saitama has been shown to be unaffected by radiation. When he was kicked to the moon by Boros, he was not affected by the increased level of radiation in space. When fighting Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, Saitama was unfazed by the latter’s Nuclear Fission punches, which were capable of creating nuclear explosions.[126] He could also stand near Garou unbothered while many other heroes present, upon mere moments of exposure, were rendered unconscious shortly before dying of the cosmic radiation emitted from the Hero Hunter.[115] Furthermore, despite being directly hit by Garou’s Gamma Ray Burst, a powerful energy blast that was implied to be the same phenomenon as a gamma ray burst, Saitama emerged completely unscathed regardless of the excessively high level of radiation emitted from the beam.[114][115]

Pain Suppression: Saitama could still suppress pain even before gaining his overwhelming power.[127][54] This has been shown on numerous occasions dating back to his days as a middle school student, taking a beating from two upper-level students and, later, a Wolf-Level monster Piggy Bancon. He then got back up when the bullies could not and chased after the monster for his money.[128] Other similar feats include taking strikes from Crablante and Personification Of A Light Pull Cord during his training as an adult among others.

Accelerated Development: Nearly a year into his training regiment, Saitama noted that as a result of his repetitive routine, his body had adapted to «moving like a hero should»,[54] and his power began to explode at a rapid rate. In no time at all, he reached unparalleled levels of strength, speed, and durability through this regiment, a testament to his growth rate; however, according to Genos, Saitama himself cannot explain the secret behind his strength, and the cyborg believes that he should not have become that unbelievably powerful with only that level of training.[61] This was further shown in his fight with Garou on Io, as Saitama’s growth rate began to soar exponentially due to the upsurge of emotion he had never previously experienced.[129]

Supernatural Abilities[]

Saitama enters Phoenix Space, a spiritual space

Non-Physical Interaction: In a case of his strength defying normal logic, Saitama broke a hole into the Phoenix Space, a spiritual realm that only exists within Phoenix Man’s bird costume, by simply knocking on it, demonstrating an ability to interact with non-physical things, much to Phoenix Man’s confusion.[130]

  • Spatial Interaction: Saitama is capable of grabbing onto the spatial portals created by Garou to redirect them,[131] and can even kick them away to prevent the Hero Hunter from opening up a portal directly beneath him, much to Garou’s shock.[132]

Technique Mimicry: Saitama possesses the ability to copy powers and techniques that he witnesses in battle. According to Garou, Saitama is capable of replicating all of the Hero Hunter’s techniques and improving them even further, just by witnessing them once. The sheer extent that this mimicry ability possesses is logic-defying, as he was even able to copy Garou’s ability to travel through time.[129]

Saitama traveling through time

  • Time Travel: Upon observing Garou demonstrate the ability to manipulate particles within his body on sub-atomic level and force them to behave like anti-particles, Saitama could copy and further improve the aforementioned ability in order to time leap. After successfully returning to the past and defeating Garou before the cosmic radiation emitted from the Hero Hunter could kill many other heroes present on the surface, Saitama managed to prevent the ominous future from happening again.[129]

Fighting Style[]

Proficient Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Despite having no formal training, Saitama is a proficient and adept hand-to-hand combatant. Thanks to many fights with monsters and villains during his training, he’s presumably got a fair amount of fighting experience. Due to his immeasurable power and boredom, he usually does not care about technique and uses flawed basic attacks. Unlike martial artists, his fighting style is quite simple but solid when backed by his absolute strength.

Saitama also uses karate chops,[133] and grappling moves to take down villains he doesn’t want to kill, or just to knock out people who pick on him.

Some of these instances are with his Serious Table Flip,[134][135] and his Serious Headbutt.[136]

  • Consecutive Normal Punches (連続普通のパンチ, Renzoku Futsū no Panchi): Saitama launches a volley of quick, single-handed punches from his right hand.[137] He can use this technique with both hands if wanted to.[138] These blows are powerful enough to blow strong or large body types apart into pieces.[139] Boros was only able to survive this attack using his intense regenerative abilities.[140]
    • Two-Handed Consecutive Normal Punches (両手・連続普通のパンチ, Ryōte Renzoku Futsū no Panchi): Saitama launches a volley of quick punches from both hands instead of one.[141] This technique was named in the original webcomic, while in the manga, he simply refers to it as Consecutive Normal Punches whether he wants to use one or both hands for the technique.[142]

Serious Series (必殺マジシリーズ, Hissatsu Majishirīzu): In Serious Series, Saitama puts more effort into his attacks. His face looks more serious when he performs these «serious» attacks. Despite the incredible strength behind them, Saitama does not actually consider these moves to be anything special.[143]

Saitama using Serious Punch

  • Serious Punch (マジ殴り, Maji Naguri): Saitama throws an extremely powerful punch. One of his serious punches was so strong that not only did it completely negate Boros’s Collapsing Star Roaring Cannon, a beam capable of wiping out an entire planet,[144] but the shockwave from the punch alone was also potent enough to part the clouds on a global scale, as well as deliver the final, fatal blow to Boros. The alien leader also declared that Saitama’s fatal attack on him was not even near his true power and that Saitama was still holding back.[145] He also used this move to obliterate Elder Centipede, a Dragon-level threat and one of the biggest monsters in the series.[146] When used against Evil Natural Water, who has become one with the ocean, Saitama was able to dissipate its form and split the ocean entirely.[147] In his fight with Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, a collision of their respective Serious Punch created a Serious Punch², which caused a shockwave of energy powerful enough to destroy the Earth and had to be redirected by Blast and his associates in order to spare the planet. Even after being diverted, the impact of energy from their punches could still travel into outer space where it (presumably) obliterated a large number of star systems in its path, leaving a large circle of starless-darkness in space,[148] with the recoil launching both Saitama and Garou to Jupiter’s moon Io.

He first used this attack against Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, who attempted to flee through a hyperspace portal to avoid the attack.[149]
  • Serious Side Hops (マジ反復横とび, Maji Hanpukuyokotobi; Viz: Serious Sideways Jumps): Saitama rapidly hops from side to side, creating a wall of afterimages. He is able to walk forward while doing so, and the shockwaves caused by it were enough to easily render unconscious Speed-o’-Sound Sonic, even with his ten afterimages.[150]
  • Serious Squirt Gun (マジ水鉄砲, Maji Mizudeppō; Viz: Serious Water Gun): Saitama uses his hands in liquid to squirt a super high-pressured stream. He used this move while submerged in lava to completely overpower Orochi’s Gaia Cannon which was an extremely powerful attack that drew energy from the very core of the Earth itself.[72]
  • Serious Table Flip (マジちゃぶ台返し, Maji Chabudai-Gaeshi): Saitama digs his fingers into the ground and flips a large amount of ground thousands of meters into the air.[151] He first used this technique against Garou while they were on Io, which completely ripped apart the moon.[152] In the original webcomic, this move was first used on Garou in Z-City, which flipped over the Monster Association Headquarters.[153] Because of the magnitude of the effect, Garou experienced profound distortions in his sense of equilibrium.[154][155]
  • Saitama using Serious Sneeze

  • … and devastates the large planet

  • Serious Sneeze (マジ嚔, Maji Kushami): Saitama simply lets out a sneeze. In his fight with Garou on Io, a sneeze from Saitama ended up travelling great distances before hitting Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, and devastating it.[129]
  • Serious Headbutt (マジ頭突き, Maji Zuzuki): Saitama headbutts his target. In the original webcomic, he used this move to counter a punch from Garou and break his arm.[156]

While he is capable of effortlessly obliterating powerful Dragon-level Mysterious Beings,[60] and parting clouds across the entire planet with his punches,[89] Saitama can still strike weaker opponents such as humans or criminals with barely enough force to knock them out without causing any real serious or life-threatening injuries to them.[157] Although Saitama has managed to beat nearly all of his opponents with a single punch, he still occasionally causes more destruction than necessary.[citation needed]

Saitama shattering Sonic’s sword using his jaw

Strong Teeth: In one of his fights with Sonic, the latter attacks him with a sword, which the Caped Baldy replies via biting and destroying said sword with no effort.[68]

Strong Farts: In his fight with Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, after getting a stomachache from the cold of outer space, the light generated from Garou’s Nuclear Fission explosion surprised Saitama and caused him to fart, with the propulsion from said flatulence giving him the momentum to catch up to Garou.[158]

Even if he was in great pain, or could barely move, or vomited blood, he continued his training.[159] Through sheer willpower and effort, Saitama removed his natural limiter and became an invincible hero.

Saitama’s willpower is also evident in his fight with Tatsumaki. His strength of will is directly connected to his psychic resistance. Tatsumaki, the strongest known esper in the universe, was unable to bend Saitama or lift him into space, exclaiming for the latter that he was «too heavy», although this was while she was injured.[120]

Surfing Skills: Saitama has displayed the ability to balance an entire aircraft carrier and keep it stable as he surfs it down a gargantuan wave.[160]

Quotes[]

  • (To Marugori) «Having overwhelming power is… boring as hell.»[162]
  • (To the Subterranean People in his dream) «I do not lose. And the surface… is guarded by me!»[163]
  • (To Genos) «I’m not looking for disciples.»[164]
  • (To Genos, Dr. Genus and Carnage Kabuto) «The true power of us human beings is that we can change ourselves on our own.»[165]
  • (To Glasses) «Do you honestly think you won’t get any stronger for the rest of your life? Instead of sitting around frustrated, it’s better to keep moving forward. I’m going now. Today is a special day in case you didn’t know. The market is selling veggies at 30% off.»[57]
  • (While jumping toward the meteor) «You will not fall on my town!»[166]
  • (To an opposing crowd) «Let me make one thing clear! I’m not working as a hero because I want you morons to admire me! I do it because I want to!»[167]
  • (To Boros) «You’re still conscious? You really are strong.»[168]
  • (To King) «Is it true? All the rumors about your strength and fight history were a lie?»[169]
  • (To King) «Just become strong.»[170]
  • (To Fubuki) «You won’t survive. You don’t get what hero means. There are a lot of incredibly strong bad guys in the world. Those who oppose them are called heroes. Even if they are alone. You, who gathers weaker subordinates to feel strong, won’t make it. At this rate, you are gonna cry sooner or later. When a monster stronger than you shows up, none of your subordinates will save you. Factions? Newbie crushing? Keeping your ranks? They have nothing to do with anything! Don’t look down on heroes, you moron!»[171]
  • (To Suiryu) «Those impurities you were talking about have nothing to do with anything. Your name is Suiryu, right? You aren’t the only one doing what he wants to do. I’ll give you some advice too: If your goal is to have fun, then it would be best if you don’t become any stronger than you are now.»[172]
  • (To King) «I never could have imagined that being a hero would be so lonely…»[173]
  • (Referring to God) «If you got something to say, show your face! I’ll still punch you out, though.»[174]
  • «I usually arrive too late.. Do I really have.. a hero’s intuition? Sure doesn’t seem like it…»[175]
  • (To Garou) «I only need one hand to beat you»[176]

Warning.png Expand to see original webcomic information. Beware of spoiler content.

  • (To Garou) «With that attack, I now know that you are sort of strong. I might even say very strong… But it’s not clear.»[177]
But what about «next time?» What will you do next?»[178]
  • (To Sweet Mask) «Dude, no… I’m not gonna let this little brawl turn into a murder. This matter’s already been settled.«[179]
  • (To Sweet Mask) «Would an ideal hero care about the attention of others? Compared to that, how do you view yourself? Isn’t how you view yourself more important? After all, we’re human.»[180]
  • «You should go and become your own ideal hero.»[181]

Trivia[]

  • Saitama’s hero profile number is 03402.[182]
  • Saitama is ranked 1st in the character popularity poll.[183]
    • On the other hand, young Saitama is ranked 10th in the character popularity poll.[184]
  • Near the beginning of the manga’s story, the color of Saitama’s cape was red (House of Evolution Arc) but was later changed to white (Giant Meteor Arc).
  • Saitama’s favorite food is hot pot.[4]
  • According to Genos, Saitama’s true potential does not lie in his appearance but rather in how he did his best to train himself to become a true hero, causing him to receive his super strength after three years of training.
  • Due to his unimpressive appearance, many enemies and allies tend to think that he is weak at first glance; only Carnage Kabuto, Boros, and Orochi could sense a glimpse of his real strength before engaging. Phoenix Man also felt that something was unnatural about Saitama and therefore chose not to confront him out of fear.
  • As confirmed in the compus notebook from the limited edition DVD set for season 1, he prefers casual clothing such as flip-flops because they’re the easiest to change out of and kick off if a battle happens.
  • One-Punch Man author ONE came up with Saitama’s rather simplistic design when thinking about how many «cool looking heroes there were.»[185]
  • Saitama’s name is most likely derived from the Saitama Prefecture located in Japan, where ONE currently lives and first started drawing the series.
  • Before becoming a hero, Saitama worked part-time at a convenience store.[186] He also used to work at festivals part-time when he was younger.[187]
  • As shown on some occasions, Saitama is quite stingy with money, in which he often tries to obtain food through unconventional means, like hunting in the forest[188] or even scavenging some parts of Mysterious Beings as food.[189]

  • Murata states that if Saitama had not hit the moon, he would have only needed to blow to propel himself. However, this is just his speculation and has not been stated by ONE.[191]
  • He got his suit from an old retired tailor who would repair his track-suit for him, he was embarrassed to wear it at first, but now cherishes it.[192]
  • Murata speculates that the limiter is not the secret to Saitama’s strength.[193]
  • According to the databook:
    • Saitama likes seaweed, Chinese cabbage, and new products of dubious value.[4]
