The Kia Sportage is a lineup of sport utility vehicles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.
The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone.[1] As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia’s SUV global lineup.

The first-generation Kia Sportage was developed with a Mazda Bongo engineering base platform. It shares many mechanical components such as the engine, transmissions (early versions), and differentials with the Mazda line of vehicles. This was during Kia’s alliance with Ford and Mazda, which involved Ford/Mazda providing technology and Kia providing inexpensive manufacturing facilities for Ford.
From 1995 to 1998, the Sportage was built by Karmann in Germany; European buyers received German-built versions in that period, while the rest of the world received South Korean-built versions. It was launched in Asia in July 1993 and European sales started two years later.
The Sportage was sold in either a five-door SUV or a three-door soft-top convertible. Kia initially developed the wagon in standard length form, but in circa 1996, the company released an extended length version. This stretched model—mainly sold in Asian markets under the name «Sportage Grand», but also as the «Grand Wagon»—featured a 305 mm (12.0 in) longer body utilizing the same wheelbase, an increase in luggage capacity from 1,570 to 2,220 liters (55.4 to 78.4 cu ft), and the relocation of the spare wheel from the tailgate to underneath the floor.[2]
Kia offered three Mazda-sourced engines in the Sportage, beginning with the 2.0-liter FE DOHC inline-four gasoline unit producing 95 kW (128 hp) and the 2.0-liter RF inline-four diesel rated at 61 kW (82 hp). Diesel-engined models were mostly restricted to European markets, as was the more basic single overhead camshaft (SOHC) version of the 2.0-liter FE gasoline inline-four. Delivering 87 kW (117 hp), this gasoline engine was available from 2000 onwards. In North America, the 2.0-liter FE DOHC engine produced 130 hp (97 kW) and had optional four-wheel drive. The 1997 model year Kia Sportage was the world’s first production vehicle to be equipped with a knee airbag.[3]
This first-generation model (1993–2002) sold in low numbers, even domestically in South Korea, and models after Hyundai’s 1998 partial takeover of Kia (1997–2002) were recalled twice for rear wheels dismounting while driving. The first-generation Sportage was discontinued in South Korea in 2002, and in North America after the 2002 model year. By 2003, most international markets had discontinued the Sportage range, although it remained on sale in some developing countries until its second-generation replacement arrived in 2005.
The Kia Sportage scored the lowest possible result in the Australian ANCAP crash tests – one star out of five. As well as a failure of the seat belts, the vehicle structure collapsed.[4]

After a two-year hiatus, the Sportage returned in model-year 2005, sharing a Hyundai Elantra-based platform with the first-generation Hyundai Tucson. A 2.0 L straight-4 diesel engine was available in the United Kingdom. Fans of the original pre-Hyundai Sportage and critics complained that it was considerably larger than the original Sportage and had none of its off-road capability, the two keys to its success. However, buyers of the second-generation model were likely to favor the available 173 hp (129 kW) V6, with 178 lb·ft of torque (241 N·m). Overall fit/finish and quality was noticeably improved over the first-generation model.[citation needed]
A facelift model of the second generation was introduced in May 2008. From 2006, it was manufactured at the Žilina Plant in Slovakia. A second facelift was introduced in the UK in early 2009, only a few months after its first facelift.
The Sportage was named as one of the most reliable vehicles from the 2009 Consumer Reports reliability survey.[7] The Kia Sportage ranked second in the «20 least expensive 2009 vehicles to insure» list by Insure.com. According to research, the Sportage is one of the least expensive vehicles to insure.[8]

Safety[edit]
The second-generation Sportage earned a top rating of five stars in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated it only “acceptable” for frontal and side impact crash protection and “poor” for roof strength.[9]

The SL series Sportage was released to Asian and European markets in April 2010, the North and Central American markets in August 2010, and the Australian market in October 2010, for the January 2011 model year.[12] Two engines were available, a 2.0-liter Hyundai R diesel engine with 184 hp (137 kW), and a 2.0-liter Theta T-GDI gasoline engine. In China, it was released by Dongfeng Yueda Kia in October 2010 and called the Sportage R, and was to be built and marketed alongside the previous generation rather than as a replacement for it.[13]
The Sportage won the 2011 Car of the Year (originally «Auto roku 2011 na Slovensku») in Slovakia and «Truck of the Year» nomination of International Car of the Year. It was top of the JD Power Survey for 2012, the only car in the survey to score five stars across all categories, from mechanical reliability to ownership costs and the dealer experience. In South Africa, it took the 2013 Standard Bank People’s Wheels Award for «SUVs and Crossovers – City & Suburban».[14][15]

IIHS[edit]
The third-generation Sportage received a «Top Safety Pick» rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States.[19] Earning the award became tougher in 2010 when IIHS added the rollover crash test, which measures roof strength and is twice as stringent as the federal requirement. To pass this test, a vehicle’s roof must be able to withstand the force of three times the vehicle’s weight (acceptable rating). The federal standard requires a roof to hold 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight.[20]

Kia unveiled its newly redesigned Sportage at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015, and brought it to market in 2016 (as a 2017 model in North America). The company said the contrasting sharp edges and smooth surfaces were inspired by modern fighter jets.[23]
There are three gasoline engines, as well as one diesel engine in the line-up. The gasoline options are a 1.6-liter, 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter, offering around 97 kW/161 N⋅m, 120 kW/200 N⋅m and 138 kW/241 N⋅m respectively, while the diesel is a 2.0-liter turbo that will produce around 135 kW/400 N⋅m. A 130 kW/265 N⋅m 1.6 T-GDi turbo-gasoline with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a 136 kW/400Nm 2.0 R-Series diesel. Front- (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations are available.
In North America, the new Sportage is offered with three trim levels (LX, EX, and SX). Much like the previous model, it is available with two inline-four engine choices, a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter and a turbocharged 2.0-liter. The 2.4-liter produces 181 hp (135 kW) and 175 lb⋅ft (237 N⋅m), while the turbocharged engine makes 240 hp (180 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m), with small differences in performance dependent on whether FWD or AWD is configured. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Kia KX5 (Chinese version)[edit]
In China, the fourth generation Sportage was sold as the Kia KX5, the third generation model was sold alongside as the Sportage R, while the Kia Sportage name was used on a separate model developed from the second generation Hyundai ix35 chassis and also sold alongside.
The Kia KX5 received a facelift in 2019 conducted by Dongfeng Yueda Kia that would exclusively be sold in China only.
Available from March 2019, the front fascia was completely restyled with headlamps integrated with the grille and the rear end of the KX5 was also slightly redesigned for the Chinese market. Despite the exclusively restyled exterior, the wheels of the Chinese version are the same as the ones on the international Kia Sportage facelift.[30]

The fifth-generation Sportage was unveiled on 8 June 2021,[33][34] with specifications revealed in July 2021.[35] Based on the brand’s latest N3 platform, Kia developed two versions of the Sportage with different body length and wheelbase depending on the market.[36]
The model is equipped with a Terrain Mode that automatically adjusts various settings depending on conditions, including snow, mud, and sand. It also features electric control suspension (ECS) on some models that provides continuous damping control in real-time. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models will also feature an E-Handling system. lt is also equipped with a more compact shift-by-wire transmission dial for the automatic model.
The vehicle has also been equipped with updated safety systems such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), navigation-augmented adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist and advanced blind-spot collision-avoidance assistance system.[37]
For the long-wheelbase model, Kia claims the fifth-generation Sportage received an increased 80 mm (3.1 in) of legroom and 7 mm (0.3 in) of headroom, with overall dimensions at 1,050 mm (41.3 in) and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) respectively.[38]

The short-wheelbase, European-spec fifth-generation Sportage was announced in September 2021.[39] It is shorter in length by 135 mm (5.3 in), and shorter in wheelbase by 75 mm (3.0 in) compared to the international model. Other differences include the deletion of a window on the rear quarter panel, and a modified front fascia.[40]
For the European market, Kia offers several range of drivetrains that includes plug-in hybrid, hybrid, mild hybrid, and diesel engine. The PHEV version features a 1.6-liter four-cylinder T-GDi engine and a 66.9 kW permanent magnet traction electric motor with a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The whole system produces 261 hp (265 PS; 195 kW). The hybrid model with same T-GDi engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor paired with a 1.49 kWh battery and produces 226 hp (229 PS; 169 kW).
The mild-hybrid model also uses the 1.6-liter T-GDI engine, which produces either 147 hp (149 PS; 110 kW) or 177 hp (179 PS; 132 kW). The 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine is available with an option of 113 hp (115 PS; 84 kW) or 134 hp (136 PS; 100 kW) of power output. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is available for the 1.6-liter while a 6-speed manual transmission is standard for all variants. All European models are equipped with Stop-and-Go technology.[41]

North America[edit]
The long-wheelbase, fifth-generation Sportage for United States and Canada was revealed in October 2021 as a 2023 model year.[42] It is locally produced in West Point, Georgia instead of imported from South Korea.[43] The hybrid version is equipped with the T-GDi engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor combined with a 1.49 kWh battery that also delivers 226 hp (229 PS; 169 kW). It has an estimated range of 500 mi (800 km) and can be optioned with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with central differential lock.[44]
Australia[edit]
The Australian market fifth-generation Sportage was released in November 2021. Imported from South Korea, it is available as a long-wheelbase model. Four variants are offered from launch, which are S, SX, SX+ and GT-Line. Available powertrain choices included a 2.0-litre petrol producing 156 PS (115 kW; 154 hp), 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol rated at 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel rated at 186 PS (137 kW; 183 hp). The base 2.0-litre petrol is front-wheel drive only with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions, while both the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines are all-wheel drive models with 7-speed dual-clutch and 8-speed automatic transmissions for the petrol and diesel respectively.[45]

На рынок SUV-автомобилей фирма Kia вышла в 1994 году с Kia Sportage. За основу платформы был взят корейский военный джип. Существовала также его гражданская версия под именем Kia Retona.
Первоначально автомобиль производился в Германии на заводе фирмы Karmann в Оснабрюке. С 1998 года производство полностью переместилось в Южную Корею. В 1999 году была переработана форма кузова.

Kia Sportage (кабриолет)На рынок SUV-автомобилей фирма Kia вышла в сентябре 1994 года с Kia Sportage. За основу платформы был взят Mazda Bongo. Sportage первого поколения имеет то же шасси, что и джип под названием Retona. Первоначально автомобиль производился в Германии на заводе фирмы Karmann в Оснабрюке. С 1998 года производство полностью переместилось в Южную Корею. В 1999 году была переработана форма кузова.
Sportage первого поколения имеет в своей основе раму лестничного типа. Передняя ось: независимая подвеска, двухрычажная, со стабилизатором поперечной устойчивости; передние приводы полуосей подключаются муфтой (вакуумная или автоматическая муфта).
Задняя ось: зависимая подвеска, со штанговым направляющим аппаратом, амортизаторами и пружинами; не разрезной мост (опционально может быть оборудован самоблокирующимся дифференциалом ограниченного проскальзывания (LSD)).

Kia Sportage второго поколения был представлен на автосалоне в Париже в 2004 году. Второе поколение машины уже является не внедорожником, а кроссовером. Собирался в Корее, Словакии, Калининграде (крупноузловая сборка со Словацким VINом. На 2017 год продолжается сборка в КНР. Автомобиль построен на одной платформе с Hyundai Tucson первого поколения.

Внешнее обновление включало затемненное обрамление фар, изменённую решётку радиатора, бамперы и новые литые диски. Теперь доступно 10 вариантов окраски. Внутри заднее сиденье было понижено на пять миллиметров в пользу изменённой высоты.

Снаружи: новые круглые противотуманные фары, изменённая решётка радиатора и изменённый бампер. Сзади была изменена графическая подсветка и бампер, покрытый чёрным пластиком.

Обновление 2013[править | править код]
Sportage KM производится для рынка КНР по настоящее время. В 2013 году на Шанхайском автосалоне Киа представила очередной рестайлинг КМ. Автомобиль получил новую решетку радиатора и накладку багажника, видоизмененные бампера, новое дизайнерское решение передней и задней оптики, повторители поворотов «переехали» на зеркала.

Третье поколение было представлено на автосалоне в Женеве в 2010 году. Автомобиль построен на одной базе с Hyundai ix35. Выпускается в Корее, Словакии и России. Весной 2014 года Sportage прошёл рестайлинг. Была изменена передняя часть, задние фонари со светодиодной технологией, изменения в интерьере и шасси.

Sportage 3 доступен в трёх комплектациях: S, SE, SX. Базовая комплектация S включает в себя полноразмерные шины и запасное колесо, преднатяжение и ограничение передних ремней, две подушки безопасности, электро-усилитель руля, четыре электростеклоподъёмника, кондиционер, центральный замок с брелоком ДУ, иммобилайзер, ABS, ESC, ESP, тахометр, противотуманки, электропрогрев и привод зеркал, подогрев зоны дворников, самих дворников заднего и переднего стёкол, бензиновый двигатель объёмом 2,0 мощностью 150 л. с., шины с диаметром 643 мм (R16) и аудиосистемой шесть динамиков, CD, AUX и USB. SE добавляет в себя Bluetooth, шесть подушек безопасности, сенсорный экран, дизель и бензин 2.0 и навигатор. Комплектация SX дополняется двумя 2.0 двигателями — дизельным и бензиновым, системой Start/Stoр и колёсами 647 мм (R17).

The Kia Sportage is a lineup of sport utility vehicles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993. Since 2004, the Sportage has been categorized as a compact crossover SUV, while previously it occupied the compact SUV class. It slots between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia’s SUV lineup, and having been through four generations is now in its fifth incarnation.

Interior (facelift)
The first-generation Kia Sportage was developed with a Mazda Bongo engineering base platform. It shares many mechanical components such as the engine, transmissions (early versions), and differentials with the Mazda line of vehicles. This was during Kia’s alliance with Ford and Mazda, which involved Ford/Mazda providing technology and Kia providing inexpensive manufacturing facilities for Ford.
From 1995 to 1998, the Sportage was built by Karmann in Germany; European buyers received German-built versions in that period, while the rest of the world received South Korean-built versions. It was launched in Asia in July 1993 and European sales started two years later.
The Sportage was sold in either a five-door SUV or a three-door soft-top convertible. Kia initially developed the wagon in standard length form, but in circa 1996, the company released an extended length version. This stretched model—mainly sold in Asian markets under the name «Sportage Grand», but also as the «Grand Wagon»—featured a 305 mm (12.0 in) longer body utilizing the same wheelbase, an increase in luggage capacity from 1,570 to 2,220 liters (55.4 to 78.4 cu ft), and the relocation of the spare wheel from the tailgate to underneath the floor.[1]
Kia offered three Mazda-sourced engines in the Sportage, beginning with the 2.0-liter FE DOHC inline-four gasoline unit producing 95 kW (128 hp) and the 2.0-liter RF inline-four diesel rated at 61 kW (82 hp). Diesel-engined models were mostly restricted to European markets, as was the more basic single overhead camshaft (SOHC) version of the 2.0-liter FE gasoline inline-four. Delivering 87 kW (117 hp), this gasoline engine was available from 2000 onwards. In North America, the 2.0-liter FE DOHC engine produced 130 hp (97 kW) and had optional four-wheel drive. The 1997 model year Kia Sportage was the world’s first production vehicle to be equipped with a knee airbag.[2]
This first-generation model (1993–2002) sold in low numbers, even domestically in South Korea, and models after Hyundai’s 1998 partial takeover of Kia (1997–2002) were recalled twice for rear wheels dismounting while driving. The first-generation Sportage was discontinued in South Korea in 2002, and in North America after the 2002 model year. By 2003, most international markets had discontinued the Sportage range, although it remained on sale in some developing countries until its second-generation replacement arrived in 2005.
The Kia Sportage scored the lowest possible result in the Australian ANCAP crash tests – one star out of five. As well as a failure of the seat belts, the vehicle structure collapsed.[3]

After a two-year hiatus, the Sportage returned in model-year 2005, sharing a Hyundai Elantra-based platform with the first-generation Hyundai Tucson. A 2.0 L straight-4 diesel engine was available in the United Kingdom. Fans of the original pre-Hyundai Sportage and critics complained that it was considerably larger than the original Sportage and had none of its off-road capability, the two keys to its success. However, buyers of the second-generation model were likely to favor the available 173 hp (129 kW) V6, with 178 lb·ft of torque (241 N·m). Overall fit/finish and quality was noticeably improved over the first-generation model.[citation needed]
A facelift model of the second generation was introduced in May 2008. From 2006, it was manufactured at the Žilina Plant in Slovakia. A second facelift was introduced in the UK in early 2009, only a few months after its first facelift.
The Sportage was named as one of the most reliable vehicles from the 2009 Consumer Reports reliability survey.[6] The Kia Sportage ranked second in the «20 least expensive 2009 vehicles to insure» list by Insure.com. According to research, the Sportage is one of the least expensive vehicles to insure.[7]

The second-generation Sportage earned a top rating of five stars in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated it only “acceptable” for frontal and side impact crash protection and “poor” for roof strength.[8]

Interior
The SL series Sportage was released to Asian and European markets in April 2010, the North and Central American markets in August 2010, and the Australian market in October 2010, for the 2011 model year.[11] Two engines were available, a 2.0-liter Hyundai R diesel engine with 184 hp (137 kW), and a 2.0-liter Theta T-GDI gasoline engine. In China, it was released by Dongfeng Yueda Kia in October 2010 and called the Sportage R, and was to be built and marketed alongside the previous generation rather than as a replacement for it.[12]
The Sportage won the 2011 Car of the Year (originally «Auto roku 2011 na Slovensku») in Slovakia and «Truck of the Year» nomination of International Car of the Year. It was top of the JD Power Survey for 2012, the only car in the survey to score five stars across all categories, from mechanical reliability to ownership costs and the dealer experience. In South Africa, it took the 2013 Standard Bank People’s Wheels Award for «SUVs and Crossovers – City & Suburban».[13][14]

IIHS[edit]
The third-generation Sportage received a «Top Safety Pick» rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States.[18] Earning the award became tougher in 2010 when IIHS added the rollover crash test, which measures roof strength and is twice as stringent as the federal requirement. To pass this test, a vehicle’s roof must be able to withstand the force of three times the vehicle’s weight (acceptable rating). The federal standard requires a roof to hold 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight.[19]

Interior
Kia unveiled its newly redesigned Sportage at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015, and brought it to market in 2016 (as a 2017 model in North America). The company said the contrasting sharp edges and smooth surfaces were inspired by modern fighter jets.[22]
There are three gasoline engines, as well as one diesel engine in the line-up. The gasoline options are a 1.6-liter, 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter, offering around 97 kW/161 N⋅m, 120 kW/200 N⋅m and 138 kW/241 N⋅m respectively, while the diesel is a 2.0-liter turbo that will produce around 135 kW/400 N⋅m. A 130 kW/265 N⋅m 1.6 T-GDi turbo-gasoline with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a 136 kW/400Nm 2.0 R-Series diesel. Front- (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations are available.
In North America, the new Sportage is offered with three trim levels (LX, EX, and SX). Much like the previous model, it is available with two inline-four engine choices, a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter and a turbocharged 2.0-liter. The 2.4-liter produces 181 hp (135 kW) and 175 lb⋅ft (237 N⋅m), while the turbocharged engine makes 240 hp (180 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m), with small differences in performance dependent on whether FWD or AWD is configured. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Kia KX5 (Chinese version)[edit]
In China, the fourth generation Sportage was sold as the Kia KX5, the third generation model was sold alongside as the Sportage R, while the Kia Sportage name was used on a separate model developed from the second generation Hyundai ix35 chassis and also sold alongside.
The Kia KX5 received a facelift in 2019 conducted by Dongfeng Yueda Kia that would exclusively be sold in China only.
Available from March 2019, the front fascia was completely restyled with headlamps integrated with the grille and the rear end of the KX5 was also slightly redesigned for the Chinese market. Despite the exclusively restyled exterior, the wheels of the Chinese version are the same as the ones on the international Kia Sportage facelift.[29]

Kia Sportage (South Korea; LWB)
The fifth-generation Sportage was unveiled on 8 June 2021,[32][33] with specifications revealed in July 2021.[34] Based on the brand’s latest N3 platform, Kia developed two versions of the Sportage with different body length and wheelbase depending on the market.[35]
The model is equipped with a Terrain Mode that automatically adjusts various settings depending on conditions, including snow, mud, and sand. It also features electric control suspension (ECS) that provides continuous damping control in real-time. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models will also feature an E-Handling system. lt is also equipped with a more compact shift-by-wire transmission dial for the automatic model.
The vehicle has also been equipped with updated safety systems such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), navigation-augmented adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist and advanced blind-spot collision-avoidance assistance system.[36]
For the long-wheelbase model, Kia claims the fifth-generation Sportage received an increased 80 mm (3.1 in) of legroom and 7 mm (0.3 in) of headroom, with overall dimensions at 1,050 mm (41.3 in) and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) respectively.[37]
Markets[edit]
Europe[edit]
The short-wheelbase, European-spec fifth-generation Sportage was announced in September 2021.[38] It is shorter in length by 135 mm (5.3 in), and shorter in wheelbase by 75 mm (3.0 in) compared to the international model. Other differences include the deletion of a window on the rear quarter panel, and a modified front fascia.[39]
For the European market, Kia offers several range of drivetrains that includes plug-in hybrid, hybrid, mild hybrid, and diesel engine. The PHEV version features a 1.6-liter four-cylinder T-GDi engine and a 66.9 kW permanent magnet traction electric motor with a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The whole system produces 261 hp (265 PS; 195 kW). The hybrid model with same T-GDi engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor paired with a 1.49 kWh battery and produces 226 hp (229 PS; 169 kW).
The mild-hybrid model also uses the 1.6-liter T-GDI engine, which produces either 147 hp (149 PS; 110 kW) or 177 hp (179 PS; 132 kW). The 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine is available with an option of 113 hp (115 PS; 84 kW) or 134 hp (136 PS; 100 kW) of power output. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is available for the 1.6-liter while a 6-speed manual transmission is standard for all variants. All European models are equipped with Stop-and-Go technology.[40]

North America[edit]
The long-wheelbase, fifth-generation Sportage for United States and Canada was revealed in October 2021 as a 2023 model year.[41] It is locally produced in West Point, Georgia instead of imported from South Korea.[42] The hybrid version is equipped with the T-GDi engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor combined with a 1.49 kWh battery that also delivers 226 hp (229 PS; 169 kW). It has an estimated range of 500 mi (800 km) and can be optioned with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with central differential lock.[43]
Australia[edit]
The Australian market fifth-generation Sportage was released in November 2021. Imported from South Korea, it is available as a long-wheelbase model. Four variants are offered from launch, which are S, SX, SX+ and GT-Line. Available powertrain choices included a 2.0-litre petrol producing 156 PS (115 kW; 154 hp), 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol rated at 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel rated at 186 PS (137 kW; 183 hp). The base 2.0-litre petrol is front-wheel drive only with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions, while both the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines are all-wheel drive models with 7-speed dual-clutch and 8-speed automatic transmissions for the petrol and diesel respectively.[44]

The Kia Sportage is a lineup of sport utility vehicles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993. Since 2004, the Sportage has been categorized as a compact crossover SUV, while previously it occupied the compact SUV class. It slots between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia’s SUV lineup, and having been through four generations is now in its fifth incarnation.

Interior (facelift)
The first-generation Kia Sportage was developed with a Mazda Bongo engineering base platform. It shares many mechanical components such as the engine, transmissions (early versions), and differentials with the Mazda line of vehicles. This was during Kia’s alliance with Ford and Mazda, which involved Ford/Mazda providing technology and Kia providing inexpensive manufacturing facilities for Ford.
From 1995 to 1998, the Sportage was built by Karmann in Germany; European buyers received German-built versions in that period, while the rest of the world received South Korean-built versions. It was launched in Asia in July 1993 and European sales started two years later.
The Sportage was sold in either a five-door SUV or a three-door soft-top convertible. Kia initially developed the wagon in standard length form, but in circa 1996, the company released an extended length version. This stretched model—mainly sold in Asian markets under the name «Sportage Grand», but also as the «Grand Wagon»—featured a 305 mm (12.0 in) longer body utilizing the same wheelbase, an increase in luggage capacity from 1,570 to 2,220 liters (55.4 to 78.4 cu ft), and the relocation of the spare wheel from the tailgate to underneath the floor.[1]
Kia offered three Mazda-sourced engines in the Sportage, beginning with the 2.0-liter FE DOHC inline-four gasoline unit producing 95 kW (128 hp) and the 2.0-liter RF inline-four diesel rated at 61 kW (82 hp). Diesel-engined models were mostly restricted to European markets, as was the more basic single overhead camshaft (SOHC) version of the 2.0-liter FE gasoline inline-four. Delivering 87 kW (117 hp), this gasoline engine was available from 2000 onwards. In North America, the 2.0-liter FE DOHC engine produced 130 hp (97 kW) and had optional four-wheel drive. The 1997 model year Kia Sportage was the world’s first production vehicle to be equipped with a knee airbag.[2]
This first-generation model (1993–2002) sold in low numbers, even domestically in South Korea, and models after Hyundai’s 1998 partial takeover of Kia (1997–2002) were recalled twice for rear wheels dismounting while driving. The first-generation Sportage was discontinued in South Korea in 2002, and in North America after the 2002 model year. By 2003, most international markets had discontinued the Sportage range, although it remained on sale in some developing countries until its second-generation replacement arrived in 2005.
The Kia Sportage scored the lowest possible result in the Australian ANCAP crash tests – one star out of five. As well as a failure of the seat belts, the vehicle structure collapsed.[3]

After a two-year hiatus, the Sportage returned in model-year 2005, sharing a Hyundai Elantra-based platform with the first-generation Hyundai Tucson. A 2.0 L straight-4 diesel engine was available in the United Kingdom. Fans of the original pre-Hyundai Sportage and critics complained that it was considerably larger than the original Sportage and had none of its off-road capability, the two keys to its success. However, buyers of the second-generation model were likely to favor the available 173 hp (129 kW) V6, with 178 lb·ft of torque (241 N·m). Overall fit/finish and quality was noticeably improved over the first-generation model.[citation needed]
A facelift model of the second generation was introduced in May 2008. From 2006, it was manufactured at the Žilina Plant in Slovakia. A second facelift was introduced in the UK in early 2009, only a few months after its first facelift.
The Sportage was named as one of the most reliable vehicles from the 2009 Consumer Reports reliability survey.[6] The Kia Sportage ranked second in the «20 least expensive 2009 vehicles to insure» list by Insure.com. According to research, the Sportage is one of the least expensive vehicles to insure.[7]

Safety[edit]
The second-generation Sportage earned a top rating of five stars in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated it only “acceptable” for frontal and side impact crash protection and “poor” for roof strength.[8]

The SL series Sportage was released to Asian and European markets in April 2010, the North and Central American markets in August 2010, and the Australian market in October 2010, for the 2011 model year.[11] Two engines were available, a 2.0-liter Hyundai R diesel engine with 184 hp (137 kW), and a 2.0-liter Theta T-GDI gasoline engine. In China, it was released by Dongfeng Yueda Kia in October 2010 and called the Sportage R, and was to be built and marketed alongside the previous generation rather than as a replacement for it.[12]
The Sportage won the 2011 Car of the Year (originally «Auto roku 2011 na Slovensku») in Slovakia and «Truck of the Year» nomination of International Car of the Year. It was top of the JD Power Survey for 2012, the only car in the survey to score five stars across all categories, from mechanical reliability to ownership costs and the dealer experience. In South Africa, it took the 2013 Standard Bank People’s Wheels Award for «SUVs and Crossovers – City & Suburban».[13][14]

IIHS[edit]
The third-generation Sportage received a «Top Safety Pick» rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States.[18] Earning the award became tougher in 2010 when IIHS added the rollover crash test, which measures roof strength and is twice as stringent as the federal requirement. To pass this test, a vehicle’s roof must be able to withstand the force of three times the vehicle’s weight (acceptable rating). The federal standard requires a roof to hold 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight.[19]

Kia unveiled its newly redesigned Sportage at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015, and brought it to market in 2016 (as a 2017 model in North America). The company said the contrasting sharp edges and smooth surfaces were inspired by modern fighter jets.[22]
There are three gasoline engines, as well as one diesel engine in the line-up. The gasoline options are a 1.6-liter, 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter, offering around 97 kW/161 N⋅m, 120 kW/200 N⋅m and 138 kW/241 N⋅m respectively, while the diesel is a 2.0-liter turbo that will produce around 135 kW/400 N⋅m. A 130 kW/265 N⋅m 1.6 T-GDi turbo-gasoline with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a 136 kW/400Nm 2.0 R-Series diesel. Front- (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations are available.
In North America, the new Sportage is offered with three trim levels (LX, EX, and SX). Much like the previous model, it is available with two inline-four engine choices, a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter and a turbocharged 2.0-liter. The 2.4-liter produces 181 hp (135 kW) and 175 lb⋅ft (237 N⋅m), while the turbocharged engine makes 240 hp (180 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m), with small differences in performance dependent on whether FWD or AWD is configured. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Kia KX5 (Chinese version)[edit]
In China, the fourth generation Sportage was sold as the Kia KX5, the third generation model was sold alongside as the Sportage R, while the Kia Sportage name was used on a separate model developed from the second generation Hyundai ix35 chassis and also sold alongside.
The Kia KX5 received a facelift in 2019 conducted by Dongfeng Yueda Kia that would exclusively be sold in China only.
Available from March 2019, the front fascia was completely restyled with headlamps integrated with the grille and the rear end of the KX5 was also slightly redesigned for the Chinese market. Despite the exclusively restyled exterior, the wheels of the Chinese version are the same as the ones on the international Kia Sportage facelift.[29]

Kia Sportage (South Korea; LWB)
The fifth-generation Sportage was unveiled on 8 June 2021,[32][33] with specifications revealed in July 2021.[34] Based on the brand’s latest N3 platform, Kia developed two versions of the Sportage with different body length and wheelbase depending on the market.[35]
The model is equipped with a Terrain Mode that automatically adjusts various settings depending on conditions, including snow, mud, and sand. It also features electric control suspension (ECS) that provides continuous damping control in real-time. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models will also feature an E-Handling system. lt is also equipped with a more compact shift-by-wire transmission dial for the automatic model.
The vehicle has also been equipped with updated safety systems such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), navigation-augmented adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist and advanced blind-spot collision-avoidance assistance system.[36]
For the long-wheelbase model, Kia claims the fifth-generation Sportage received an increased 80 mm (3.1 in) of legroom and 7 mm (0.3 in) of headroom, with overall dimensions at 1,050 mm (41.3 in) and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) respectively.[37]

Europe[edit]
The short-wheelbase, European-spec fifth-generation Sportage was announced in September 2021.[38] It is shorter in length by 135 mm (5.3 in), and shorter in wheelbase by 75 mm (3.0 in) compared to the international model. Other differences include the deletion of a window on the rear quarter panel, and a modified front fascia.[39]
For the European market, Kia offers several range of drivetrains that includes plug-in hybrid, hybrid, mild hybrid, and diesel engine. The PHEV version features a 1.6-liter four-cylinder T-GDi engine and a 66.9 kW permanent magnet traction electric motor with a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The whole system produces 261 hp (265 PS; 195 kW). The hybrid model with same T-GDi engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor paired with a 1.49 kWh battery and produces 226 hp (229 PS; 169 kW).
The mild-hybrid model also uses the 1.6-liter T-GDI engine, which produces either 147 hp (149 PS; 110 kW) or 177 hp (179 PS; 132 kW). The 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine is available with an option of 113 hp (115 PS; 84 kW) or 134 hp (136 PS; 100 kW) of power output. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is available for the 1.6-liter while a 6-speed manual transmission is standard for all variants. All European models are equipped with Stop-and-Go technology.[40]

North America[edit]
The long-wheelbase, fifth-generation Sportage for United States and Canada was revealed in October 2021 as a 2023 model year.[41] It is locally produced in West Point, Georgia instead of imported from South Korea.[42] The hybrid version is equipped with the T-GDi engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor combined with a 1.49 kWh battery that also delivers 226 hp (229 PS; 169 kW). It has an estimated range of 500 mi (800 km) and can be optioned with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with central differential lock.[43]
Australia[edit]
The Australian market fifth-generation Sportage was released in November 2021. Imported from South Korea, it is available as a long-wheelbase model. Four variants are offered from launch, which are S, SX, SX+ and GT-Line. Available powertrain choices included a 2.0-litre petrol producing 156 PS (115 kW; 154 hp), 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol rated at 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel rated at 186 PS (137 kW; 183 hp). The base 2.0-litre petrol is front-wheel drive only with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions, while both the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines are all-wheel drive models with 7-speed dual-clutch and 8-speed automatic transmissions for the petrol and diesel respectively.[44]

The Kia Sportage is a lineup of sport utility vehicles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993. Since 2004, the Sportage has been categorized as a compact crossover SUV, while previously it occupied the compact SUV class. It slots between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia’s SUV lineup, and having been through four generations is now in its fifth incarnation.

Interior (facelift)
The first-generation Kia Sportage was developed with a Mazda Bongo engineering base platform. It shares many mechanical components such as the engine, transmissions (early versions), and differentials with the Mazda line of vehicles. This was during Kia’s alliance with Ford and Mazda, which involved Ford/Mazda providing technology and Kia providing inexpensive manufacturing facilities for Ford.
From 1995 to 1998, the Sportage was built by Karmann in Germany; European buyers received German-built versions in that period, while the rest of the world received South Korean-built versions. It was launched in Asia in July 1993 and European sales started two years later.
The Sportage was sold in either a five-door SUV or a three-door soft-top convertible. Kia initially developed the wagon in standard length form, but in circa 1996, the company released an extended length version. This stretched model—mainly sold in Asian markets under the name «Sportage Grand», but also as the «Grand Wagon»—featured a 305 mm (12.0 in) longer body utilizing the same wheelbase, an increase in luggage capacity from 1,570 to 2,220 liters (55.4 to 78.4 cu ft), and the relocation of the spare wheel from the tailgate to underneath the floor.[1]
Kia offered three Mazda-sourced engines in the Sportage, beginning with the 2.0-liter FE DOHC inline-four gasoline unit producing 95 kW (128 hp) and the 2.0-liter RF inline-four diesel rated at 61 kW (82 hp). Diesel-engined models were mostly restricted to European markets, as was the more basic single overhead camshaft (SOHC) version of the 2.0-liter FE gasoline inline-four. Delivering 87 kW (117 hp), this gasoline engine was available from 2000 onwards. In North America, the 2.0-liter FE DOHC engine produced 130 hp (97 kW) and had optional four-wheel drive. The 1997 model year Kia Sportage was the world’s first production vehicle to be equipped with a knee airbag.[2]
This first-generation model (1993–2002) sold in low numbers, even domestically in South Korea, and models after Hyundai’s 1998 partial takeover of Kia (1997–2002) were recalled twice for rear wheels dismounting while driving. The first-generation Sportage was discontinued in South Korea in 2002, and in North America after the 2002 model year. By 2003, most international markets had discontinued the Sportage range, although it remained on sale in some developing countries until its second-generation replacement arrived in 2005.
The Kia Sportage scored the lowest possible result in the Australian ANCAP crash tests – one star out of five. As well as a failure of the seat belts, the vehicle structure collapsed.[3]

After a two-year hiatus, the Sportage returned in model-year 2005, sharing a Hyundai Elantra-based platform with the first-generation Hyundai Tucson. A 2.0 L straight-4 diesel engine was available in the United Kingdom. Fans of the original pre-Hyundai Sportage and critics complained that it was considerably larger than the original Sportage and had none of its off-road capability, the two keys to its success. However, buyers of the second-generation model were likely to favor the available 173 hp (129 kW) V6, with 178 lb·ft of torque (241 N·m). Overall fit/finish and quality was noticeably improved over the first-generation model.[citation needed]
A facelift model of the second generation was introduced in May 2008. From 2006, it was manufactured at the Žilina Plant in Slovakia. A second facelift was introduced in the UK in early 2009, only a few months after its first facelift.
The Sportage was named as one of the most reliable vehicles from the 2009 Consumer Reports reliability survey.[6] The Kia Sportage ranked second in the «20 least expensive 2009 vehicles to insure» list by Insure.com. According to research, the Sportage is one of the least expensive vehicles to insure.[7]

Safety[edit]
The second-generation Sportage earned a top rating of five stars in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated it only “acceptable” for frontal and side impact crash protection and “poor” for roof strength.[8]

The SL series Sportage was released to Asian and European markets in April 2010, the North and Central American markets in August 2010, and the Australian market in October 2010, for the 2011 model year.[11] Two engines were available, a 2.0-liter Hyundai R diesel engine with 184 hp (137 kW), and a 2.0-liter Theta T-GDI gasoline engine. In China, it was released by Dongfeng Yueda Kia in October 2010 and called the Sportage R, and was to be built and marketed alongside the previous generation rather than as a replacement for it.[12]
The Sportage won the 2011 Car of the Year (originally «Auto roku 2011 na Slovensku») in Slovakia and «Truck of the Year» nomination of International Car of the Year. It was top of the JD Power Survey for 2012, the only car in the survey to score five stars across all categories, from mechanical reliability to ownership costs and the dealer experience. In South Africa, it took the 2013 Standard Bank People’s Wheels Award for «SUVs and Crossovers – City & Suburban».[13][14]

The third-generation Sportage received a «Top Safety Pick» rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States.[18] Earning the award became tougher in 2010 when IIHS added the rollover crash test, which measures roof strength and is twice as stringent as the federal requirement. To pass this test, a vehicle’s roof must be able to withstand the force of three times the vehicle’s weight (acceptable rating). The federal standard requires a roof to hold 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight.[19]

Interior
Kia unveiled its newly redesigned Sportage at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015, and brought it to market in 2016 (as a 2017 model in North America). The company said the contrasting sharp edges and smooth surfaces were inspired by modern fighter jets.[22]
There are three gasoline engines, as well as one diesel engine in the line-up. The gasoline options are a 1.6-liter, 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter, offering around 97 kW/161 N⋅m, 120 kW/200 N⋅m and 138 kW/241 N⋅m respectively, while the diesel is a 2.0-liter turbo that will produce around 135 kW/400 N⋅m. A 130 kW/265 N⋅m 1.6 T-GDi turbo-gasoline with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a 136 kW/400Nm 2.0 R-Series diesel. Front- (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations are available.
In North America, the new Sportage is offered with three trim levels (LX, EX, and SX). Much like the previous model, it is available with two inline-four engine choices, a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter and a turbocharged 2.0-liter. The 2.4-liter produces 181 hp (135 kW) and 175 lb⋅ft (237 N⋅m), while the turbocharged engine makes 240 hp (180 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m), with small differences in performance dependent on whether FWD or AWD is configured. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Kia KX5 (Chinese version)[edit]
In China, the fourth generation Sportage was sold as the Kia KX5, the third generation model was sold alongside as the Sportage R, while the Kia Sportage name was used on a separate model developed from the second generation Hyundai ix35 chassis and also sold alongside.
The Kia KX5 received a facelift in 2019 conducted by Dongfeng Yueda Kia that would exclusively be sold in China only.
Available from March 2019, the front fascia was completely restyled with headlamps integrated with the grille and the rear end of the KX5 was also slightly redesigned for the Chinese market. Despite the exclusively restyled exterior, the wheels of the Chinese version are the same as the ones on the international Kia Sportage facelift.[29]

Kia Sportage (South Korea; LWB)
The fifth-generation Sportage was unveiled on 8 June 2021,[32][33] with specifications revealed in July 2021.[34] Based on the brand’s latest N3 platform, Kia developed two versions of the Sportage with different body length and wheelbase depending on the market.[35]
The model is equipped with a Terrain Mode that automatically adjusts various settings depending on conditions, including snow, mud, and sand. It also features electric control suspension (ECS) that provides continuous damping control in real-time. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models will also feature an E-Handling system. lt is also equipped with a more compact shift-by-wire transmission dial for the automatic model.
The vehicle has also been equipped with updated safety systems such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), navigation-augmented adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist and advanced blind-spot collision-avoidance assistance system.[36]
For the long-wheelbase model, Kia claims the fifth-generation Sportage received an increased 80 mm (3.1 in) of legroom and 7 mm (0.3 in) of headroom, with overall dimensions at 1,050 mm (41.3 in) and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) respectively.[37]
Markets[edit]
Europe[edit]
The short-wheelbase, European-spec fifth-generation Sportage was announced in September 2021.[38] It is shorter in length by 135 mm (5.3 in), and shorter in wheelbase by 75 mm (3.0 in) compared to the international model. Other differences include the deletion of a window on the rear quarter panel, and a modified front fascia.[39]
For the European market, Kia offers several range of drivetrains that includes plug-in hybrid, hybrid, mild hybrid, and diesel engine. The PHEV version features a 1.6-liter four-cylinder T-GDi engine and a 66.9 kW permanent magnet traction electric motor with a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The whole system produces 261 hp (265 PS; 195 kW). The hybrid model with same T-GDi engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor paired with a 1.49 kWh battery and produces 226 hp (229 PS; 169 kW).
The mild-hybrid model also uses the 1.6-liter T-GDI engine, which produces either 147 hp (149 PS; 110 kW) or 177 hp (179 PS; 132 kW). The 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine is available with an option of 113 hp (115 PS; 84 kW) or 134 hp (136 PS; 100 kW) of power output. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is available for the 1.6-liter while a 6-speed manual transmission is standard for all variants. All European models are equipped with Stop-and-Go technology.[40]

North America[edit]
The long-wheelbase, fifth-generation Sportage for United States and Canada was revealed in October 2021 as a 2023 model year.[41] It is locally produced in West Point, Georgia instead of imported from South Korea.[42] The hybrid version is equipped with the T-GDi engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor combined with a 1.49 kWh battery that also delivers 226 hp (229 PS; 169 kW). It has an estimated range of 500 mi (800 km) and can be optioned with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with central differential lock.[43]
Australia[edit]
The Australian market fifth-generation Sportage was released in November 2021. Imported from South Korea, it is available as a long-wheelbase model. Four variants are offered from launch, which are S, SX, SX+ and GT-Line. Available powertrain choices included a 2.0-litre petrol producing 156 PS (115 kW; 154 hp), 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol rated at 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel rated at 186 PS (137 kW; 183 hp). The base 2.0-litre petrol is front-wheel drive only with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions, while both the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines are all-wheel drive models with 7-speed dual-clutch and 8-speed automatic transmissions for the petrol and diesel respectively.[44]

Первую модернизацию модель притерпела в конце 2006/начале 2007 года. Затем были внесены изменения после начала производства на новом заводе Kia Zilina в 2008 году, а затем и в 2009 году.

Названия авто: как правильно и как не надо
Российские интерпретации: «Хундай», «Хюндай», «Хёндай». Заблуждаются все интерпретаторы. Единственно верный вариант предложило открывшееся в Москве представительство компании: согласно заявке, составленной на русском языке, его зарегистрировали как «Хёндэ Мотор СНГ». Но реакции не последовало. Давить же на сознание масс представительство не стало. Марка узнаваема, машины раскупают? И ладно.
Снова корейцы не стали роптать на наши «Туксон», «Туксан», «Таксон», «Тусан». Острословы обозвали машину еще и «Тушканом». На самом деле автомобиль сделали тезкой города в Аризоне, США, его географическое название — Тусон.
Многие годы Mitsubishi все мы называли «Мицубиси» — с предпоследним звуком «с». Хотя странно: знаем со школы, что сочетание «sh» образует наше «ш». Однако коль скоро говорить так повелось, никто не «возникал».
И вот недавно по телеканалам пошел рекламный видеоролик, посвященный моделям бренда. В закадровом тексте диктор отчетливо выговаривает «Мицубиши». Это подсказка: следует произносить именно так!
Хотя стоит ли? Японцы произносят нечто среднее между «с» и «ш», это одна из особенностей японской речи.
«Исправьте ошибку в русском произношении и написании Chevrolet Lacetti», — письмо такого смысла разослали по СМИ из представительства General Motors. Указывали: произносить, как повелось, «Лацетти» — неверно, а правильно — «Лачетти».
Потому что слово итальянское. В итальянском же языке есть правило: если вслед за латинской «c» (си) в словах следуют «e» или «i», то буквосочетание следует читать/произносить/писать по-русски как «че» и «чи»… Однако обух привычки плетью пожеланий не перешиб.
«Спортаж», «Спортаже», «Спортэдж», «Спортиж», «Спортидж». Варианты — с ударением на первый или второй слоги.
А как правильно? Осведомленные источники сообщили, что сотрудники корейской компании в своем кругу произносят «Спортэ́йдж», с ударением на второй слог.
В национальности бренда никто не сомневается: марку «имени себя» основал сеньор Ferruccio Lamborghini. Однако в фамилии нет «дж», а есть «г»: Ламборгини. Ошибку делают не только «простые смертные», не только ведущие радиостанций (хотя они не имеют права на подобные огрехи — им доверяют, за ними повторяют), но даже поисковик Google. Как только в строку вбиваешь «Ламбор…», выскакивает слово-подсказка, предлагающее продолжение: «…джини». Между тем в итальянском, если после «g» следует «h», следует читать «г». По аналогии: всем хорошо известное слово «спагетти» пишется spaghetti. Но никто же не покушается на его произношение!
Чаще произносят «Порше́». А следует читать так, как называли великого Фердинанда — По́рше, с ударением на первом слоге. Герои кинофильмов дали нам упрощенное, если не сказать свойское — «Порш». Но это, как кажется, уместно для тех, кто близок к таким машинам. Все другие — понтярщики.
Еще в 1901 году один из первых удачных образцов автомобилей молодой компании назвали так по имени дочери главы представительства Daimler во Франции: Мерце́дес, именно с «ц» и с ударением именно на предпоследнем слоге, а не на последнем, как делаем мы. Но название в нынешнем его звучании настолько вросло в нашу речь, что не вырвать.
На денежные просторы мирового авторынка когда-то собирались отправить наши «Жигули». Да вот беда, в тот рай название не пускало. Неймбренд во всех странах должен, как минимум, прочитываться.
Вазовцы придумали: Lada. Советскому народу, трепетно следящему за судьбой любимого автогиганта, объяснили: во-первых, это, как видите, исконно по-русски. Во-вторых, в названии исключается буква «жэ».
Но тогда же появилась байка о вроде бы самой весомой причине присвоения ВАЗам «экспортного» имени. Шло всенародное социалистическое соревнование за экономию всего и вся, а шильдик Lada из четырех букв почти вдвое легче, чем Zhiguli, плюс экономия гальванических материалов, трудозатрат при его изготовлении.
По версии, просочившейся то ли из-за «железного занавеса», то ли из недр КГБ, истинная причина «экспортного ребрендинга» другая. «Жигули», на слух тамошних обывателей, созвучно с «жиголо» — дамским содержантом.
Благозвучное имя, правда, не спасло — по миру «Лад» разошлось мало.
Второе имя не помогло и «Запорожцу» поднять его экспортный потенциал — его переименовали в «Ялту».
Иногда названия автомобилей коверкаются до непристойности.
Японцы нарекли так машину по названию леопарда, обитающего в пампасах Патагонии, на юге Аргентины: Leopardus pajeros по латыни. Звучно!
Но не для стран с испанской речью. В испанском алфавите «j» — буква «хота», в словах она произносится чаще как наше «х» (хорошо, мы в Pajero читаем ее на английский манер — с «дж»). Еще хуже, что испанский сленг придал слову pajero значение низкое: онанист.
Потому-то автомобилю подобрали и второе наименование — Montero («Воин-горец»). С ним машину продают в Испании, испаноговорящих странах Латинской Америки (но не в Бразилии, где общаются по-португальски), Соединенных Штатах, а также почему-то в Индии. Для Великобритании название третье — Shogun (так записали японское «сёгун» с первым звуком, тяготеющим к «ш»).
Rolls-Royce Silver Mist
Сам великий Rolls-Royce невольно попал впросак в Германии со своим Silver Mist. Написание Silver Mist точь-в-точь совпадает с немецкими словами, однако обозначают они не романтичное, по-британски, «Серебряный туман», а «Серебряный навоз».
Созвучно названию Nova произносится испанское «no va» — «не едет». Впрочем, «латинос» оценили «Нову» и покупали очень неплохо, она стала платформой для создания плеяды замечательных машин, выпускавшихся под уважаемыми брендами.
На североамериканском рынке название сохранили, а в РФ поменяли на Aveo.

Новый Kia Sportage нацелился на Россию: длинная база и два мотора
В базу Росстандарта внесли Одобрение типа транспортного средства (ОТТС) на паркетник пятой генерации. Как и прежде, для нашего рынка модель будут производить локально.
В родной Корее Kia Sportage нового поколения с заводским индексом NQ5 дебютировал еще в июле, осенью раскрылись варианты для Европы, Австралии и США. А теперь свежий кроссовер с довольно смелым дизайном сертифицирован и в нашей стране: ОТТС вступило в силу с сегодняшнего дня, 10 декабря, но, как ранее заявили в российском офисе Kia, у нас старт продаж намечен на первую половину следующего года. Для РФ паркетник по-прежнему будет собирать калининградский «Автотор».
Россиянам ожидаемо предложат растянутую версию – как в Штатах и Корее (но салон строго пятиместный). Длина такого кроссовера равна 4660 мм, ширина – 1865 мм, высота – 1660 мм (еще есть модификации высотой 1665 и 1680 мм), колесная база – 2755 мм. У длиннобазного Sportage есть дополнительные окошки в задних стойках, в отличие от «короткого» SUV, который адресован в основном европейцам (длина – 4515 мм, расстояние между осями – 2680 мм). Ну и для сравнения, габариты предыдущего кросса (QL), предназначенного для РФ: 4485/1855/1645 мм, колесная база – 2670 мм.
Длиннобазный новый Kia Sportage, версия для Кореи
Новый Kia Sportage пока сертифицирован только с бензиновыми атмосферными моторами. Судя по ОТТС, они такие же, как у родственного Hyundai Tucson: это четырехцилиндровые G4NL 2.0 (150 л.с., 192 Нм) с распределенным впрыском и G4KN 2.5 (190 л.с., 242 Нм) с комбинированным впрыском, оба способны «питаться» АИ-92. Базовому двигателю положены шестиступенчатые «механика» или «автомат», с ним и Sportage, и Tucson могут быть как с передним, так и с полным приводом. Старший сочетается с 8АКП, с ним «корейцы» исключительно полноприводные. Кроссовер Хёндэ в РФ еще можно купить с турбодизелем D4HD 2.0 (186 л.с., 416 Нм), но пока неизвестно, достанется ли этот мотор нашему новому Sportage, ведь предыдущий кроссовер Kia у нас дизельной версии лишился из-за низкого спроса. В других странах у «пятого» Kia Sportage есть гибридные версии, однако к нам их вряд ли привезут.
