Lady Bunny, originally known as «Bunny Hickory Dickory Dock» (born Jon Ingle, August 13, 1962),[1] is an American drag queen, nightclub DJ, actor, comedian, and event organizer. She is the founder of the annual Wigstock event, as well as an occasional television and radio personality. She has released disco singles such as «Shame, Shame, Shame!» and «The Pussycat Song», and has hosted two one-woman comedy shows, ‘That Ain’t No Lady!’ and ‘Clowns Syndrome’.

Personal life[edit]

Early life and education[edit]

Lady Bunny was born in Wilmington, North Carolina,[2] but grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and describes her childhood to have been «wonderful and [she] lucked out in the parents department.»[3] Her mother is a retired registered nurse and her father is a history professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.[4]

Growing up, she would try on costumes and outfits, and put on plays with the other kids in the neighborhood. Her family lived next to a florist and she would collect the thrown out ribbons in the garbage and turn them into costumes for the plays.[4]

When Bunny was 11, her family moved to Ghana for a year to accommodate her father, who had received a Fulbright Scholarship. «It was the best year of my life», she said, remembering banana trees in her backyard and a giant snake that slithered on the road. «I still gag West African cab drivers by speaking the remnants of Fante. I can only say a few things, but it tickles them like crazy.»[4] She briefly attended Bootham School,[5] a Quaker boarding school in York, England. Based on her experiences, Bunny regards the English education system to be better than the American one.[6] Upon graduating, she enrolled at the University of Tennessee, where her father teaches, but later relocated to Atlanta, where she attended Georgia State University.[4]

Present[edit]

Lady Bunny says she has an affinity for trans women and has considered transitioning. She spends her public life in drag and uses she/her pronouns. Lady Bunny is seldom seen out of women’s clothing.[7][8] In a 2022 interview, Lady Bunny said «I guess if I had to label myself, I would say I’m probably nonbinary, but I don’t feel the need to stipulate.»[9]

Lady Bunny currently lives in New York City.[3] She does not often discuss personal matters, and has no known romantic partner or children.

Career[edit]

Atlanta[edit]

In Georgia, Lady Bunny met RuPaul. For a time they were go-go dancers for a band called the Now Explosion.[4] Alongside Larry Tee, the two became fixtures on the Atlanta gay scene in the early 1980s.[10] They appeared in a variety of low-budget films, including the Starbooty series. In the episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race entitled ‘Roast in Peace’, RuPaul revealed that he was the first person to ever put Lady Bunny in drag, technically making him her drag mother.[11] RuPaul and Lady Bunny later relocated to New York City together.

New York[edit]

In 1983, Lady Bunny moved to New York City, where she and RuPaul shared an apartment for a time. They worked at the Pyramid Club. She remembers that one of the first times she performed in New York she lip-synced Gloria Gaynor’s «I Will Survive» and fell during the performance, losing her wig and a shoe. Bunny’s performance style during this period blended lip sync, dance, and comedy. Her performances often included self-deprecating commentary, and short criticism of other performers broken up by short bits of dancing. During this period, she also held several odd jobs such as working in an ice cream parlor and in sales for publisher Ralph Ginzburg.[4]

Soon, Lady Bunny became one of the Club Kids[12] and in 1985, she organized the first Wigstock,[13] an annual drag queen festival that lasted until 2005, and was later revived in 2018. The idea to revive Wigstock came from Neil Patrick Harris’ husband, David Burtka. Wigstock became the subject of Chris Moukarbel’s 2019 documentary Wig, which included Debbie Harry, Kevin Aviance, Willam, and Neil Patrick Harris.[3]

Performance[edit]

Lady Bunny is known for her «big curves, bigger hair» and is one of the legendary and ubiquitous New York City drag queens that is still performing today.[4] She is a staple of New York Fashion Week, she tours alongside cabaret shows, and DJs around the globe. She was DJ at Van Cleef & Arpels’ 40th anniversary party in Paris[4] and for the Standard’s Black Out Party, which celebrated the 25th anniversary of Naomi Campbell’s fashion career. Lady Bunny is the regular DJ for Empire State Pride Agenda and has served as the in-house DJ for Visionaire and V Magazine.[14] Lady Bunny is a huge music aficionado. Her favorite Blondie song is Fade Away and Radiate. Hideaway by Canadian musical Kiesza is a pop song Lady Bunny regularly spins during DJ sets for its popular and underrated appeal.[3] Lady Bunny has been releasing her own original music since 1996.[15] Lady Bunny has written and run two one-woman comedy shows at LGBT club La Escuelita, ‘That Ain’t No Lady!’[16] and ‘Clowns Syndrome’, the latter receiving praise from the New York Times.[17] Both comedy shows toured globally.

Bunny can put together a full drag look within 20 minutes and maintains that every drag look must include faux lashes and a good wig.[3] Her style of drag performance is comedic and often involves the parodying of popular songs. She most often appears in blonde wigs, and frequently performs at XL Nightclub. She has shared the stage with other popular New York City Drag Queens like Bianca del Rio.[18] Lady Bunny was featured on the European leg of the Werq the World Tour.

Lady Bunny is featured prominently in «The Tyranny of Consciousness», a 2017 five-channel video installation by video artist Charles Atlas, which premiered at «Viva Arte Viva», the 2017 Venice Biennale, curated by Christine Maciel. The video is now in the permanent collection of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.[19]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lady Bunny produced an online drag show called ‘Cuntagious’.[20] In January 2021, she launched a podcast, Ebony and Irony, co-hosted by Monét X Change.[21]

Lady Bunny has appeared in films such as Party Girl, Wigstock: The Movie, Wig, Peoria Babylon, Starrbooty, Another Gay Movie, and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.

Television[edit]

In 2005, she was a roaster on the Comedy Central roast of Pamela Anderson[22] and released her first DVD, Rated X for X-tra Retarded.[23]

Lady Bunny served on the judges’ panel on the spinoff show RuPaul’s Drag U, which aired on the Logo TV network from 2010 to 2012. Lady Bunny was Dean of Drag and had a role of judge in the first season. In season 2 of RuPaul’s Drag U, the Dean of Drag role was expanded into a segment called «Lady Lessons». During the fifth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, contestant Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 impersonated Bunny for the Snatch Game.[24] Episode 5 («Roast in Peace») of the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars features a roast of Lady Bunny at a mock funeral.[25]

In 2003, Lady Bunny made a guest appearance in the Sex and the City episode «Boy, Interrupted», as the emcee at the LGBT prom.[26]

In 2021, Lady Bunny featured in NewsBeat, a news show written by Luke Evendon with executive producer Clay Aiken.[27]

Writing[edit]

Lady Bunny worked as a commentator for Star Magazine’s ‘Worst of the Week’ column. She has also written for Paper Magazine, Interview, Out, Time Out, Visionaire, and Huffington Post. According to her own website, she is currently working on a memoir.[14]

In the episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race entitled ‘Roast in Peace’, RuPaul revealed that he was the first person to ever put Lady Bunny in drag, technically making him her drag mother.[11] RuPaul and Lady Bunny later relocated to New York City together.

New YorkEdit

PerformanceEdit

Lady Bunny (born Jon Ingle, August 14, 1962)[1] is an American drag queen, nightclub DJ, promoter, and founder of the annual Wigstock event. She is a longtime friend of RuPaul. She has also released disco singles such as «Shame, Shame, Shame!» and «The Pussycat Song». She has appeared in films such as Party Girl, Wigstock: The Movie, Peoria Babylon, Starrbooty and To Wong Foo, and currently hosts the podcast Ebony and Irony with Monét X Change.

Biography

Lady Bunny has been a staple in New York nightlife since the 1980s, alongside other drag queens such as RuPaul and Linda Simpson, who had both started to gain popularity at the same time. She is known for her often irreverent and politically incorrect style of comedy combined with her Southern gregariousness, as well as her iconic large hair.

Lady Bunny began her career alongside Larry Tee and RuPaul as a fixture on the Atlanta gay scene[2] and appeared in a variety of low-budget films with them, including the Starrbooty series. Moving to New York City in 1984, Lady Bunny and RuPaul found support from the Club Kids, a group of young nightclub personalities known for their vivacious attitudes and eccentric fashion. Notable Club Kids include founder and convicted criminal Michael Alig, James St. James, Amanda Lepore and Richie Rich. Alig kept both her and RuPaul busy with gigs throughout the 80s and early 90s. Bunny is quoted as saying «Michael paid my rent for 10 years.»

Lady Bunny and RuPaul

In 1985, Lady Bunny organized Wigstock[3], an annual outdoor drag festival. The festival was an impromptu creation of drunken drag queens, which included drag icon Lypsinka, who performed for an audience of homeless people in East Village. Wigstock would continue to grow in success, as would Lady Bunny, until it was discontinued in 2005. However, in September 2018, Wigstock was revived by her and Neil Patrick Harris. The idea to resurrect the festival came from Harris’ husband, David Burtka.

Bunny was featured in the web series Queens of Drag: NYC by gay.com in 2010. The series featured fellow New York drag queens Bianca Del Rio, Dallas DuBois, Hedda Lettuce, Mimi Imfurst, Peppermint, and Sherry Vine.

Bunny frequently performs at XL Nightclub with Bianca Del Rio, and continues to perform her comedy routines that come with a forewarning: «This show is raunchy and offensive by nature, so if that’s not your cup of tea then skip it.» Despite her offensive humor and rejection of political correctness within the LGBT+ community, she is often unsure of her gender identity and considers herself to be far-left in regards to politics.

Career

Music

Her style of drag performance usually involves lip-syncing to a compilation of karaoke versions of popular songs over which she has recorded her vocals singing parodies of the original lyrics. The new lyrics are usually sexually explicit, revolve around food, or both. For instance, her parody of the Gwen Stefani song Holdback Girl has the lyric «I shit a banana/a banana in my ass!»

Lady Bunny has released video parodies of «Santa Claus is coming to town» and California Gurls titled West Virginia Girls. Her January 2011, parody of «Harper Valley PTA», entitled «The Ballad of Sarah Palin», lampooned the American politician as portrayed by Palin imitator Dorothy Bishop. On July 1, 2013, Lybra Records released remixes of Lady Bunny’s collaboration with Wayne Numan,[4] «Take Me Up High»[5] which became her first Billboard Club/Dance hit peaking at #17 in September 2013. In October 2014 she released «Lately» (Remixes) her collaboration with New York City Producers and club DJ’s Sean Grasty and DJ Rikky Rivera better known as Groove Addix. Lady Bunny’s vocal of «Lately» is already creating a buzz globally in the underground club scene (pre-release) with explicit lyrics «Pussy this good/Don’t wait around for no man-Pussy this good/Don’t wait for no nobody.» «Lately» is being released on the UK House label Enriched Records which is owned by Rich B a well known Dj/Artist on London’s gay club scene.

RuPaul and Lady Bunny have collaborated on music several times over the years, including «Throw Ya Hands Up», which was included on RuPaul’s 2009 album Champion while a 2015 Ellis Miah remix was featured on Realness, and the 2013 single «Lick It Lollipop». She was also featured on a track from Ginger Minj’s 2021 album Gummy Bear.

Television

In 2005, she was a roaster on the Comedy Central roast of Pamela Anderson and released her first DVD, Rated X for X-tra Retarded. Bunny disclosed that she «bombed» the Pam Anderson roast due to production wanting her to roast the other comedians more than Pamela Anderson.[6]

Lady Bunny on Drag U

RuPaul asked Lady Bunny to be a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Bunny declined, but took interest in the spin-off series, RuPaul’s Drag U. Bunny served on the judges’ panel of RuPaul’s Drag U, which aired on the Logo TV network from 2010 to 2012. Lady Bunny was Dean of Drag and had the role of a judge in the first season. In Season 2 of RuPaul’s Drag U, the Dean of Drag role was expanded into a segment called Lady Lessons. As Dean of Drag, she was offering the contestants advice on beauty, fashion and social skills. Bunny’s advice is always peppered with semi-clever double entendres and a segment will often end with an insinuation that she will be having her way with one of the experts that was part of the lesson.

Alaska impersonated Lady Bunny during Season 5’s Snatch Game, winning praise from Ru and the other judges, and a place in that week’s top three.

The RuPaul’s Drag Race Roast of Lady Bunny

In 2003, Lady Bunny made a guest appearance in the Sex and the City episode «Boy, Interrupted», as the emcee at the LGBT prom.

In 2019, Lady Bunny made her first appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race, in All Stars 4. In the episode, the queens read her in a funeral-style roast.

Touring

In September 2017, Lady Bunny toured across the UK and The Netherlands on the Queens of Comedy Tour alongside host Bianca Del Rio, Alyssa Edwards, BenDeLaCreme, Charlie Hides, and Katya. She has also performed for the Werq The World Tour in 2017 and 2018.

Podcasting

Lady Bunny has guested on many drag-related podcasts including RuPaul: What’s the Tee?, Hi Jinkx!, Sloppy Seconds, Race Chaser and The Bianca Del Rio Podcast. Although reportedly originally hesitant to start a podcast of her own, in January 2021 she began co-hosting the news-focused podcast Ebony and Irony with Monét X Change, produced by Starburns Audio. Episodes of the podcast have included guests such as Peppermint, Tammie Brown, Katya, Kelly Mantle and Latrice Royale.
