Anthony Armand Ferguson Padilla[6] (born February 12, 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Lightweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He is a former Interim UFC Lightweight Champion. Ferguson debuted in 2008, and has been with the UFC since he won The Ultimate Fighter 13 in 2011. He is trained in freestyle wrestling, boxing, jiu-jitsu,[3] Muay Thai,[7] and Wing Chun.[8]

Early life[edit]

Ferguson was born in Oxnard, California, on February 12, 1984, but grew up mainly in Muskegon, Michigan. He is of Mexican heritage. His surname of Ferguson comes from his Scottish American stepfather.[9][10]

Ferguson was a three-sport athlete at Muskegon Catholic Central High School in American football, baseball, and wrestling. He was the starting defensive back for the 2000 Division 8 state football champions and was a three-time All-State selection in wrestling, winning the 152-lb division in 2002.

After high school, Ferguson enrolled at Central Michigan University before transferring to Grand Valley State University. He also did a stint at Muskegon Community College. He did not complete his degree, but had a successful collegiate wrestling career, winning the 2006 National Collegiate Wrestling Association national wrestling championship in the 165-lb division.[5]

Following college, Ferguson moved back to California to be closer to his extended family, working in marketing and sales during the day and picking up shifts as a bartender at night. One night, while working a bar shift, a patron noticed Ferguson’s cauliflower ear and struck up a conversation about his wrestling background. The patron was a trainer at a local MMA gym and invited him to work with some young mixed martial artists on their wrestling. Shortly after this, he decided to pursue a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

Mixed martial arts career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Ferguson began his professional MMA career fighting in small organizations around California in 2007. Notable matches in his early career include a win over kickboxing champion Joe Schilling and a loss to future World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) fighter Karen Darabedyan.

The Ultimate Fighter[edit]

Ferguson applied to compete in the UFC’s reality series The Ultimate Fighter multiple times. In 2010, he was finally accepted to compete in season 13 of the series after amassing a 10–2 professional record and winning the welterweight championship in PureCombat. He competed as a welterweight on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Lesnar vs. Team dos Santos.

Ferguson was selected as the third pick for Team Lesnar. In his first fight, Ferguson defeated Justin Edwards by knockout in the first round. He next faced Ryan McGillivray in the quarterfinals and won by a TKO in the first round. He then faced Chuck O’Neil in the semifinals and won by TKO in the third round to advance to the final.[11]

Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]

Ferguson officially made his UFC debut at the Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale against Ramsey Nijem to determine the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 13. Ferguson defeated Nijem by knockout in the first round to win a UFC contract. He also received the Knockout of the Night bonus.[12]

Following his debut, Ferguson returned to lightweight and faced Aaron Riley on September 24, 2011, at UFC 135. The fight was stopped after the first round after Riley said he had a broken jaw, resulting in a TKO victory for Ferguson.[13]

Ferguson then faced MMA veteran Yves Edwards at the Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale.[14] Ferguson won via unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, and 29–28).[15]

Ferguson was expected to face Dennis Hallman on May 5, 2012, at UFC on Fox: Diaz vs. Miller.[16] Hallman pulled out of the bout with an injury and replaced by Thiago Tavares.[17] Then, Tavares was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by Michael Johnson.[18] Ferguson lost the fight by unanimous decision.[19]

After over a year away from competition while healing an arm injury incurred in his last fight, Ferguson returned to face Mike Rio on October 19, 2013, at UFC 166.[20] He won by D’Arce choke submission in the first round. The win also earned him his first Submission of the Night award.[21]

Ferguson faced Katsunori Kikuno on May 24, 2014, at UFC 173.[22] He won the fight by knockout in the first round.[citation needed]

Ferguson was expected to face Danny Castillo on August 2, 2014, at UFC 176.[23] After UFC 176 was cancelled, Castillo/Ferguson was rescheduled and took place on August 30, 2014, at UFC 177.[24] Ferguson won the fight via split decision.[25]

Ferguson faced Abel Trujillo on December 6, 2014, at UFC 181.[26] Ferguson won the bout in the second round by submission.[27]

Ferguson was expected to face Yancy Medeiros on February 28, 2015, at UFC 184.[28] Medeiros pulled out of the bout, citing injury, and was replaced by Gleison Tibau.[29] Ferguson won the fight by submission in the first round which also earned him a Performance of the Night bonus.[30]

Ferguson faced Josh Thomson on July 15, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 71.[31] He won the fight via unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, and 30–26) and earned his second straight Performance of the Night bonus.[32][33]

Ferguson was expected to face Khabib Nurmagomedov on December 11, 2015, at the Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale.[34] Nurmagomedov pulled out of the fight in late October, citing injury, and was replaced by Edson Barboza.[35] After a back-and-forth first round that had Ferguson docked one point due to an illegal upkick, Ferguson finished Barboza with a D’Arce choke submission in the second round.[36] He earned his third consecutive Performance of the Night bonus as well as a Fight of the Night bonus.[37]

A rematch with Michael Johnson was briefly scheduled for March 5, 2016, at UFC 196.[38] On January 27, it was announced that Johnson withdrew from the bout due to injury. In turn, the bout with Nurmagomedov was rescheduled and expected take place on April 16, 2016, at UFC on Fox 19.[39] On April 5, Ferguson pulled out of the bout due to a lung issue.[40] He was replaced by promotional newcomer Darrell Horcher.[41]

Ferguson was expected to face Michael Chiesa on July 13, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 91.[42] Chiesa pulled out of the fight on June 27, citing injury, and was replaced by promotional newcomer Lando Vannata.[43][44] Ferguson won his second straight fight via D’Arce choke and was awarded another Fight of the Night bonus.[45][46]

Ferguson fought former champion Rafael dos Anjos on November 5, 2016, at the Ultimate Fighter Latin America 3 Finale.[47] He won the fight by unanimous decision. Both participants were awarded Fight of the Night, which gave Ferguson his sixth post-fight bonus in his past five fights.[48][49]

The pairing with Nurmagomedov was scheduled for a third time at UFC 209, this time for the interim UFC Lightweight Championship.[50] Prior to the weigh-ins for the event, Nurmagomedov was hospitalized due to the ill effects of his weight cut, and the bout was cancelled yet again.[51]

Ferguson faced Kevin Lee on October 7, 2017, at UFC 216 for the interim UFC Lightweight Championship. He won the bout by triangle choke submission in the third round.[52][53]

A bout with Nurmagomedov had been scheduled for the fourth time on April 7, 2018, at UFC 223.[54] On April 1, 2018, Ferguson reportedly tore his fibular collateral ligament while walking on the set for a pre-fight media obligation and was forced to withdraw from the event.[55][56]

Ferguson faced Anthony Pettis on October 6, 2018, at UFC 229.[57] He won the bout via corner stoppage after two rounds. Pettis’ longtime cornerman and coach, Duke Roufus, informed the referee that he would not continue after suffering a broken hand.[58] Their performance earned both participants Fight of the Night honors.[59]

Ferguson next faced Donald Cerrone on June 8, 2019, at UFC 238.[60] He won the fight via TKO due to a doctor stoppage after Cerrone blew his nose between rounds 2 & 3 which caused his swollen right eye to completely close, rendering him unable to continue.[61] This fight earned both participants Fight of the Night honors.[62]

Losing Streak[edit]

Ferguson was scheduled to face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC Lightweight Championship on April 18, 2020, at UFC 249, but after Nurmagomedov was unable to leave Russia due to restricted air travel as a result of the coronavirus pandemic,[63] Ferguson then agreed to compete for the Interim UFC Lightweight Championship against a late replacement in Justin Gaethje at the event.[64] On April 9, UFC president Dana White announced that this event was postponed[65] and the bout eventually took place on May 9, 2020.[66] He was outstruck by Gaethje for all five rounds, eventually losing the fight via TKO in the fifth round.[67] This fight earned both participants Fight of the Night honors.[68]

Ferguson faced Charles Oliveira on December 12, 2020, at UFC 256.[69] He lost the fight via unanimous decision after being dominated and controlled on the ground for most of the fight.[70]

Ferguson faced Beneil Dariush on May 15, 2021, at UFC 262.[71] He lost the fight via unanimous decision being once again controlled on the ground for the majority of the match.[72]

Ferguson faced former Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler on May 7, 2022 at UFC 274.[73] Despite a strong first round, Ferguson lost the fight via knockout early in the second round.[74]

Ferguson was scheduled to return to the welterweight division to face Li Jingliang on September 10, 2022, in the co-main event of UFC 279.[75] However, Ferguson instead moved up to the main event to face Nate Diaz, after his original opponent Khamzat Chimaev was pulled from their fight due to missing weight.[76] Ferguson lost the fight via a guillotine choke submission in the fourth round.[77]

Personal life[edit]

Ferguson has a son, Armand Anthony, with his wife, Cristina Ferguson.[78] In March 2019, Cristina filed a restraining order against Tony, alleging uncharacteristic behavior such as severe paranoia, not sleeping for days, tearing apart their home fireplace, and believing that a tracking chip was inserted into his leg during reconstructive knee surgery. She did not allege physical abuse, and filed the restraining order as a precautionary measure to get him help for his mental state.[79][80] By April 2019, she had dropped the order, and he began to resume MMA.[81]

Ferguson is known as one of MMA’s most eccentric personalities.[82] He constructed his own custom training apparatus at his house in Big Bear Lake, California and regularly posts videos of his unique workouts on his personal Instagram page. These include using a wing chun dummy[83] smacking his arms and legs against metal poles to build bone strength, throwing baseballs off a pitcher’s mound to build power for right-hand punches, swinging a hammer while balanced on a gym ball, and somersault jumps over tall stacks of gym mats.[84][85] Fellow fighters have regularly commented on these unorthodox routines, and other fighters such as Belal Muhammad have even parodied Ferguson’s training videos on their own personal social media pages.[86] Ferguson has written on his Twitter account that he eschews sparring in training as he «finds it limits my creativity» when fighting.[87]

Tony Ferguson: biography

Tony Ferguson is a famous sportsman, fighter of the mixed martial arts who performs in the featherweight category. His unique technology of the fight has made him a real rival, and a has brought him many awards. The duels with Tony’s participation are always extremely spectacular, and he regularly gets bonuses for best performance of the evening.

Childhood and youth

Anthony Armand Ferguson was born on the 12th of February, 1984 in the town of Oxnard, State of California. He didn’t know his biological father: right after the son’s birth his mother Mary got married one more time. The Scot Armand Ferguson brought up the boy and gave him his surname.

When the future eminent sportsman began to attend the school, his family relocated to Michigan, Muskegon County where his stepfather became the owner of the small bar. Anthony was growing a shy and unsociable child that’s why Armand began to acquaint his son with the sport at an early age. Right after the boy was enrolled to the school, his father took his son to the boxing club, and later encouraged his occupations with basketball and rugby. Having become a professional fighter, in the interview the sportsman thanked his stepfather for the fact that he directed him on the right path, and he said that he is obliged to his father for his career.

Studying at high school, Tony began to show noticeable sports progress which helped him to get the grant on the admission to Michigan Central University – the most prestigious educational institution of the state.

The young man chose the faculty where there were studying the specialists in the field of oil and gas. Though, having studied here for 3,5 years, he left his studies. The death of his mother which became a tragedy for Tony became the reason for this. To take his thoughts off of the things, he plunged into the training, and after some time he left his studies at the university.

Ferguson returned to his native town of Muskegon and started to help his father with the bar. Later he remembered this period with great pleasure – he liked the cheerful and easy-going atmosphere of the bar, and the bartender’s work seemed simple to him. Once among their clients, there was a person who invited Anthony to the training center of MMA fighters, and Tony liked what he had seen so much that he decided to try himself in the sphere of the martial arts.

Martial arts

Despite quite good physical parameters, Ferguson had difficulties with the training – his muscles hurt, he felt sick though this didn’t stop the future star of the ring. Two months passed and he threw himself into the new hobby and left his bartender’s work. In 2008 Anthony received the license of the fighter and began to perform in the welterweight. The sportsman began to demonstrate aggressive and particular fight technique already at the first competitions. During the first two years of the career Ferguson lost two fights out of 12.

In 2011 Tony was offered to conclude the contract with UFC – the largest company which organizers the fights. He accepted it and the same year appeared on the ring in the battle against Ramsey Nijem, having knocked him down in the first round. In a short time, Ferguson has become a participant of The Ultimate Fighter reality show and has started training under the leadership of Brock Lesnar.

The show helped him to reveal his character and artistic skills. On the ring, Tony was considered to be a hot-tempered fighter, who easily fell victim to provocation and quickly lost his temper. At that time he took himself the pseudonym of El Cucuy. El Cucuy is a name of an illusive mystical monster with which people frighten the children in the countries of Latin America. His unique fight technique is a combination of the boxing techniques and «tricks» borrowed from jiu-jitsu.

Though at The Ultimate Fighter Ferguson took part in the tournament in 170 pounds, for constant fights in UFC he chose the category of lightweight. In a short time, the sportsman enriched his list of victories with the brilliant fights with Aaron Riley and Yves Edwards. Tony lost his fourth fight at UFC. Though, as his admirers noticed, these failures have motivated Tony and haven’t demoralized him. Right after this he won 10 times one by one (still this result has become the best one in the division) and had gained the glory of the real threat for other fighters in featherweight.

Till October of 2015, Anthony already had 15 fights in UFC in his assets from which 14 of them were victorious. He only had one defeat with the score 13:3 in the fight against Michael Johnson. That fight resulted for Tony in the broken hand that’s why he took a break in training for half a year and then returned on the ring later — rested, vigorous and dangerous.

Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee

Anthony either knocks down or puts out of action the majority of his rivals. He does this with the help of chokehold might which he masters skillfully. In his list of victories, there was a spectacular show: Ferguson won the fights with such stars of the ring as Danny Castillo, Lando Vannat, Katsunori Kikuno, and others. In 2017 Tony won a fight with Kevin Lee, which he finished with his well-known chokehold might.

During his sports career Ferguson never managed to defeat the Dagestan Khabib Nurmagomedov, and now, by the words of Anthony, he is his most desired rival. Tony has difficult relations with the ex-champion Conor McGregor. On the 30th of December, 2017 there was planned their fight, but it was canceled. McGregor behaved aggressively towards the judge during the previous competition, and UFC decided to punish the athlete in such a way.

His fans were very disappointed by such decision as the fight promised to be bright and spectacular. On the web there appeared the accusations that Conor was aggressive with the referee to leave the fight and not to lose his face because he understood that Ferguson was stronger than him. By means of the media Tony accused McGregor of cowardice and told him:

«Come back when you become a real man.»

Personal life

A sportsman is a married man; he got acquainted with his future wife Christina when he was a student. They married in 2012, and four years later Christine gave birth to their son. Anthony called him Armand in honor of his stepfather. At present, the family has settled in the town of Los Santos, California, and Ferguson tries to dedicate more time to his personal life despite his busy working schedule.

Except for sport, Anthony has one more hobby — he is fond of the cars. He likes traveling to distant places with his family. Besides, the fighter has collected a great collection of blade weapons the major part of which was presented to him by his fans and friends.

Tony has accounts in a couple of social networks, including Twitter and Instagram where he publishes photos from the training and performances. On his hand, the athlete has a tattoo, which represents the sequence of the letters TSKYH. By the words of the fighter, it is deciphered as Think Strong Keep Your Head. Tony is 180 cm tall and weighs 70 kilos.

Тony Ferguson at present

In April Ferguson had serious surgery on his knee. To prove this, he published on his Twitter a photo of the injured leg with bruises and brackets and announced that he hurt it by chance and wasn’t angry because of this situation. Tony had to undergo long-lasting rehabilitation before he could appear on the ring again.

Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis

In 2018 the sportsman fought against Anthony Pettis who was a defending champion of MMA. The fight turned out to be violent, and the blood was flowing on the floor though none of the participants wanted to give up. As a result, the referee dropped Pettis from the second round, and Tony won with a technical knockout. After the fight, Ferguson was diagnosed with the fracture of the right hand.

At present Anthony is seriously engaged in preparation for the forthcoming fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov. Earlier, UFC tried to organize this fight four times through each time the fight was postponed for various reasons. The admirers hope that the 5th attempt will be successful.

«I will smash him in blood, – Ferguson says. – I will dance around this guy and beat him with rigid uppercuts so that he will think twice before passing to me in the legs».

He won the fight via TKO due to a doctor stoppage after Cerrone blew his nose between rounds 2 & 3 which caused his swollen right eye to completely close, rendering him unable to continue. This fight earned him the Fight of the Night award.

Ferguson is scheduled to face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC Lightweight Championship on April 18, 2020 at UFC 249.

Personal life

Ferguson has a son with his wife, Cristina Ferguson.

In March 2019, Cristina filed a restraining order against Ferguson, alleging uncharacteristic behavior such as severe paranoia, not sleeping for days, tearing apart their home fireplace, and believing that a tracking chip was inserted into his leg during reconstructive knee surgery. Ferguson’s wife, however, did not claim any form of abuse or violence from Ferguson, and claims that she filed the restraining order as a precautionary measure to get Ferguson the necessary help for his mental state. In April 2019, Ferguson’s wife had dropped the restraining order, and it was revealed that Ferguson would resume fighting.

Q&A

When and why did you start training for fighting? I moved away from Michigan when I was 24 in pursuit of finding happiness and finding myself. What I found was an opportunity to keep competing after college wrestling and to put some extra change in my pocket. I always liked being in the spotlight as an athlete. What can I say? I’m a glory hound. After my second pro fight, I quit my day job and decided to give my life a fighting chance. I barely made ends meet by personal training and teaching self defense, but that’s what I needed to do to keep my face in the gym 24/7. If you want something bad enough, you have to fight for it. For the first time in my life, things made sense. I’d just get up, train early & hard and lay some hands down to pay the bills. It made it feel like I earned my way doing what «I» wanted to do. I finally found my niche. Mixed Martial Arts as a whole has allowed me to express myself through movement and self-sacrifice. All or Nothing.
What ranks and titles have you held? Former interim UFC lightweight champion, The Ultimate Fighter season 13 winner. 3x Michigan High School Athletic Association All- State Honors w/ a State Championship my Senior year. 2x Collegiate All-American via Grand Valley State University, black belt in BJJ
Do you have any heroes? Mr. Big Guns Upstairs…GOD, and Dan Gable
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It means the world to me!!! I’ve never wanted anything so bad in my life. I’ve had my ups and downs in life, and, no matter what, I always found myself always making it through all right. I’m blessed to be able to keep competing. It’s my dream and my destiny to show the whole world what I can do, what I am capable of physically and mentally.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I attended Central Michigan University and Muskegon Community College, and then found my way to Grand Valley State University. At the time, I didn’t know what I wanted to be (I switched majors from Physical Therapy to Criminal Justice to Nursing), so I decided I would wait to finish my degree. I know now, though, and plan on re-enrolling in the fall to finish what I started!
What was your job before you started fighting? I’ve had a lot of jobs, but the one I had for the longest time was being a Bartender. I loved my job and loved being around so many people. I heard everyone’s life story, and I was able to be hospitable and have a good time.
Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? 22 second KO in my first and only ammy Fight!
Specific accomplishments in pro competition? Pure Combat 170lbs Welterweight World Champion Belt Holder. I also made TUF history, I guess, with the 1st Upkick KO in my 1st Ultimate Fighter showing!
Favorite grappling technique: Ankle pick, and low singles baby!!!
Favorite Striking technique: Left Hook, Right Cross!!! Back ta back!

Tony Ferguson is a American mixed martial artist from Oxnard, California, U.S.. He currently competes as a Lightweight & Welterweight in the UFC.

Background

Ferguson was born in Oxnard, California, on February 12, 1984, but grew up mainly in Muskegon, Michigan. He is of Mexican heritage. His surname of Ferguson comes from his Scottish American stepfather.

He did not complete his degree, but had a successful collegiate wrestling career, winning the 2006 National Collegiate Wrestling Association national wrestling championship in the 165-lb division.
