Nezuko Kamado (Japanese: 竈門 禰豆子, Hepburn: Kamado Nezuko) is a fictional character in Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Nezuko and her older brother Tanjiro Kamado are the sole survivors of an incident where they lost their entire family to demons, with Nezuko being transformed into a demon, but still surprisingly showing signs of human emotion and thought. After an encounter with Giyu Tomioka, a demon slayer, Tanjiro begins his quest to help his sister turn into human again and avenge the death of his family.

Nezuko’s character was created to make Tanjiro a more innovative character due to her identity being of a demon. Initial critical response to Nezuko was positive due to how unconventional it was for the narrative to have her kind of character as a demon as well as how she displays more powers to fight across the series.

She has also been a popular character within the Demon Slayer fanbase, appearing in an issue from the Weekly Playboy magazine.

Creation and developmentEdit

Early sketches of Nezuko and Tanjiro.

Nezuko’s character was created by mangaka Koyoharu Gotouge to make the lead Tanjiro Kamado be more unique. Due to Nezuko being a demon, Tanjiro cannot bring himself to hate the demons he faces and instead finds himself in a gray zone of black and white morality. The author’s editor and other assistants said that thanks to this, the manga took a more innovative narrative that easily engaged the readers.[2]

Anime producer Yuma Takahashi said that while Nezuko is silent ever since the first episode, the staff could express intricate changes in the character’s facial expression and humanize her emotions. Through those advantages, they were able to give more depth to her. Takahashi claimed that he wanted viewers to look forward to the development of Nezuko and the wide range of emotions she could show.[3] The anime uses an insert theme song titled «Kamado Tanjiro no Uta». It expresses the determination of Tanjiro, who stands up from despair and struggles to protect his younger sister.[4]

Akari Kitō, the Japanese voice actor of Nezuko, said Tanjiro’s voice actor, Natsuki Hanae, is like a big brother to her at the studio as he is supportive and if there are parts that she has difficulty recording, Hanae would stay and wait till she finishes even though he has done his part. Hanae said he also thinks of Kitō as a younger sister.[5] For the English dub, Abby Trott described Nezuko as «a sweet, caring sister to her many siblings,» even when she becomes a demon as she often aids her brother in battles. This kindness displayed by Nezuko was found relatable by Trott.[6]

AppearancesEdit

Nezuko is the daughter of Tanjuro Kamado and Tanjiro’s younger sister who is turned into a demon. Despite Muzan Kibutsuji assumption that he has killed them all in his attempt to sire a sun-resistant demon, Nezuko survives as a demon with her mind mostly gone. However, she retains enough of her memories to keep herself from killing Tanjiro. Due to two years of hypnotic conditioning by Urokodaki, Nezuko regards all humans as her family and will mercilessly attack any demon that threatens them. Instead of consuming human flesh, Nezuko regains energy from sleep and tends to become unconscious for long periods of time after overexerting herself. Initially, she is unable to speak and must wear a bamboo gag to keep from biting anyone. However, in later volumes, the muzzle is removed and she gains the power of speech in volume 22 then remembers everything and gets her human thoughts again and remembers her name, albeit very broken due to not speaking for more than two years. Nezuko has several powers, including regeneration, superhuman strength, growing and shrinking rapidly and a blood demon technique called Exploding Blood (爆血, Bakketsu) that causes her blood to burn once it leaves her body. Tanjiro generally carries her around in a wooden box (a gift from Urokodaki) until she develops the ability to survive exposure to sunlight, with Muzan targeting her soon after. Nezuko’s mind and humanity are eventually restored during the final battle against Muzan, and it is implied that she helps Tanjiro recover from his demon transformation by allowing him to ingest her blood, which contains antibodies for Muzan’s demonic blood.

The character also makes an appearance in the video game Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles.[7]

ReceptionEdit

Early response to Nezuko was positive. Rebecca Silverman from Anime News Network noted that Nezuko retained her humanity despite becoming a demon due to how she protects her older brother which makes Giyu allow the siblings to embark on a quest to find a cure to her state. James Beckett from the same site said that Nezuko’s transformation into a demon was the pilot’s strongest part which makes the narrative surprisingly unconventional, based on Tanjiro’s reaction to it and Giyu’s actions.[8] Manga.Tokyo also praised the development of Nezuko’s actions because she manages to awake after two years as a caring demon to Tanjiro which makes their embracing emotional.[9] Comic Book Bin enjoyed Nezuko’s portrayal as, while being a cursed character, she is still active and appealing to see, mostly due to how she develops supernatural strength to use in combat.[10] In a general overview of the series’ first episodes, UK Anime News found Nezuko as the most compelling character for the depth she possesses and, like Comic Book Bin, noted she is surprisingly helpful to Tanjiro when it comes to fighting.[11] Comic Book Resources regarded the duo as «the most likable male and female leads of the decade».[12] UK Anime News also liked how the two siblings are compared to the villains in a meaningful way.[13] Anime Inferno said, «Tanjiro and Nezuko make a great team and are two enjoyable protagonists, with the series at its best when the two siblings are working together.»[14]

In February 2020 at Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the fight of Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko against Rui won the «Best Fight Scene» category.[15] The 19th episode of the first season, «Hinokami», was cited by critics at IGN as one of television’s best episodes in history, commenting on the build-up and exciting execution.[16] Manga.Tokyo enjoyed the build-up of this scene as Nezuko manages to assist Tanjiro thanks to being motivated by her late mother and the power she shows surprised the writer. Due to the emotional delivery of this scene, the writer looked forward to more interactions between the two siblings.[17] Anime News Network was surprised by Nezuko’s heroic actions in the episode as well as the voice acting from Akari Kitō despite not having multiple lines in the series, being able to develop her character in the process.[18] The character’s handling in the Entertainment District Arc was panned by Anime News Network for giving her sexualization despite her young age.[19][20][21]

She was ranked in 3rd place in the first Demon Slayer character popularity poll with 3,319 votes.[22] IGN regarded Nezuko as one of the series’s most popular characters and noted how her design elaborates the way she sees humans as good people as a result of hypnosis.[23] Siliconera made a similar article discussing her characterization and how compelling she is during the anime’s first season due to how, despite her tragic backstory, Nezuko becomes a more heroic figure when fighting other demons.[24] In 2021, Nezuko appeared on the cover of the July issue of Weekly Playboy featuring an interview with Kitō.[25] In October 2021, Shueisha failed its appeal to trademark the clothing patterns for three of Demon Slayer main characters including Nezuko.[26] She won the Newtype «Best Female Character» award for her role in the series.[27]

As a result, the internet has exploded with various cosplayers dressing up as Nezuko on TikTok;[28] and Instagram.[29] Many websites have also started creating content on how to do a Nezuko cosplay.[30] Even graphic designers and illustrators have taken to Pinterest;[31] with their own fan art and interpretations of Nezuko.

Nezuko Kamado (竈門 (かまど) () () () Kamado Nezuko?) is the deuteragonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is a demon and the younger sister of Tanjiro Kamado and one of the two remaining members of the Kamado family. Formerly a human, she was attacked and transformed into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji.

Appearance

Nezuko is a petite young girl with fair skin, visibly large, prominent fangs, and sharp, stiletto nails with a base color of light pink and ombre fading to a red-pinkish color at the end where they point. Her hair is long, black, and wavy. It reaches just below her waist, turning a flame-orange color as it passes her elbows, and appears to be crimped into large, straight ridges, worn side-swept drastically to her left. She has soft-looking, pale pink eyes that appear a lighter color around the rims of their irises, slanted downward toward the sides of her face and framed by notably long eyelashes, the pupils of which can appear slit as she transforms. In the manga, Nezuko can sometimes be shown with more than one bow. According to Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko was known as a great beauty in their home town.[4]

She wears a light pink kimono with an asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern, the lining a paler pink, secured by a red and white-checkered hanhaba obi with an orange-threaded obijime and a green obiage. Over this, she sports a long, dark-brown haori that reaches her calves, as well as a pair of zōri with pink straps and white tabi socks, wrapped with thick pieces of black material resembling kyahan. Nezuko also wears a small pink ribbon on the left side of her head to keep her hair out of her face, along with the bamboo muzzle Giyu Tomioka gave her,[5] which is secured around her jaw with a strip of red cloth.

When Nezuko transforms into her awakened form during her fight with Daki, she has a bigger, taller and curvaceous body and has longer hair that reaches to her feet. She loses her bamboo muzzle and footwear, as well as the sleeves of her haori and kimono. She grows a short white horn on the right side of her forehead designed with irregular crack pattern, along with vein-like patterns in her forehead near her horn. She has vein-like pattern appears around her left eye, but her most striking new feature is the red and green vine-like pattern that covers her skin, circling around her arms, legs, and chest.

As a human, she had a very similar appearance, the only differences being her lack of demon-like traits, vermilion hair, and pale pink eyes. Instead, Nezuko had fully black hair, worn tied back in three low buns, decorated by pink ribbons, and eyes of a dark red color that only appeared pale pink around their lower irises. She wore the same kimono, just without her haori and with a white Onbuhimo cloth tied around her, which she used to carry her little brother, Rokuta Kamado, on her back.[6]

Personality

Nezuko’s original personality as a human was that of a kind and caring girl who thought of others before herself much like her older brother, Tanjiro. Additionally, she was a responsible elder sister to her younger siblings and often put their needs first rather than her own.[7][8] Nezuko is, however, not afraid to get in harm’s way, protecting her friends from demons even after being returned to a human state. It is also shown that Nezuko’s humane, laid-back demeanor supports this fact after Tanjiro apologized to her.[9]

Nezuko’s friendly disposition.

While Nezuko initially starts off like any other demon, bloodthirsty and hungry for human flesh, after seeing her brother’s desire to protect her from being killed by a Demon Slayer despite her being a demon, she changes completely and becomes fiercely protective of him. Nezuko seems to have forgotten a good portion of her memories as a human, besides those related to her family, and thus doesn’t retain the exact personality she had before transformation, instead acting akin of a child. She is still very caring and protective towards humans who she sees as members of her family, although this is mainly due to the influence Sakonji Urokodaki had on her while she was asleep for two years. Nezuko also retains some of her human emotions, as she has been seen to cry when sad and smile when happy, but in general she appears more detached than her human cohorts, although she is still much calmer and less malicious than most demons. Nezuko also tends to see the images of her siblings in other humans, like Rokuta Kamado in Yushiro.

Nezuko protecting Tanjiro from Giyu.

Since becoming a demon, Nezuko appears to have become rather brazen, and does not seem to fear fighting; she fiercely guards her brother as well as her allies. She has also developed a strong willpower, which can be seen through her refusal to consume human flesh or blood, even in cases of extreme injury or exposure to human blood, which can be seen when she refuses Sanemi Shinazugawa after he attempts to lure her into biting him with his Marechi blood.[10] Her strong willpower remains even when she is no longer a demon, shown when she willingly leaps in front of Inosuke to protect him from her own brother, who had become a demon and was attempting to kill those around him. Though she could have been killed, Nezuko did not hesitate to protect her brother.

On the rare occasion that Nezuko attempts speech, she has been seen to stutter a lot, which may be due to her bamboo mouthpiece, which is seldom removed, and the fact that she didn’t speak for a number of years after her transformation. However, after developing resistance towards sunlight, which allows her to go outside and interact with others more often, her speech has shown signs of improvement and she is able to fully pronounce words if someone else has just spoken them,[11] or hears them repeated frequently enough.[12]

It was later revealed by Tamayo that her missing memories and underdeveloped personality were due to her being not fully conscious, as she prioritized developing her resistance to sun to regaining her consciousness.[13]

Abilities

Nezuko overpowering an Upper Rank demon.

Overall Abilities: Despite not being a member of the Twelve Kizuki, Nezuko is a very powerful demon. Her most prominent trait is her extraordinary growth rate, possibly due to the high amount of blood she received from Muzan Kibutsuji when he turned Nezuko into a demon and the fact that she doesn’t need to consume human blood to survive. This was shown across many battles in the course of the series where she could defeat her enemies despite being overwhelmed by them in the beginning. She has shown to defeat her enemies by increasing her own physical capabilities, enhancing her regeneration, or developing her own Blood Demon Art in dire situations.

Despite being a young demon, Nezuko has displayed great combat proficiency and skill in battle, overpowering the Temple Demon and helping Tanjiro fight the Swamp Demons. Nezuko’s accelerated growth also seems to mirror Tanjiro’s own incredible growth rate, as she could take on members of the Twelve Kizuki and match Upper Rank demons in months. However, the trait that sets her apart from all other demons is the fact that she has the ability to conquer the sun, prompting the Demon King to call her the «chosen demon».

Abnormal Demon Physiology: Nezuko has several unique demonic traits that set her apart from all other demons. Most notably, Nezuko can continuously restore her power without consuming any human blood like any other demon would need to do. Instead, she recovers her strength through sleep alone, though she would have to spend a lot of time sleeping in order to recuperate and regain her power. Moreover, Nezuko has an extraordinary growth rate, as shown multiple times when she grows stronger without any training or consuming humans. This ability is shown to trigger even in the midst of battle and with huge power boosts. This is best exemplified during her battle against Susamaru where her foot was blown by the Temari demon’s ball attack, but after regenerating she was able to face her in an even match kicking the ball and eventually surpass her.

  • Full Demon Form: Nezuko has the ability to enter a berserk state where she becomes more demonic in appearance, transforming into an adult version of herself with vine-like tattoos that circle her body, a single horn protruding from her right forehead side. This awakened form greatly enhances Nezuko’s physical capabilities as well as increasing her regeneration level to match that of the Upper Ranks’. When she first awakened this ability in her fight with Daki, she became frenzied in battle, lost her usual restrain to human blood, and the only way she could revert back to normal is to have Tanjiro sing her a lullaby. During the Demon Slayer’s fight against Hantengu, Nezuko manages to control this form at will, allowing her to fight more effectively while maintaining her usual composure and restrain from feeding on humans.
  • Sunlight Resistance: During their battle against Upper Rank Four, Hantengu, Nezuko developed immunity from sunlight, a feat thought impossible for demons, even by the Demon King himself. With this immunity to sunlight, she is able to completely walk and go about in the daytime without being burnt to ash, prompting Muzan to shift his goals to hunt and absorb her to conquer the sun himself.

Blood Manipulation: In addition to her Blood Demon Art, Nezuko has shown in her Awakened Form to have immense control of her own blood. When her limbs and head were all severed and she was going to be cut into pieces by Daki, Nezuko managed to control her severed limbs and head by instantly congealing and solidifying the blood spraying from them before the streams could break apart. With this, she was able to command her limbs to grab and stop Daki’s sashes, and, even though it was done with floating, severed limbs connected by blood, she was able to do it with such strength that the sashes were stopped dead in their tracks. She was then able to pull all of her limbs back together through those blood streams, allowing her body to regenerate.[14]

Nezuko instantly reattaching her body parts.

Immense Regeneration: As a demon, Nezuko has enhanced regenerative abilities that allow her to heal in the blink of an eye. When she first became a demon, her regeneration was relatively slow compared to other demons, taking a while to heal slash wounds. However, once in her awakened state, her regeneration ability evolved to the point it matched the caliber of the Upper Ranks, allowing her to reconnect her whole torso and body parts as well as regrow her arms and legs instantaneously. Daki noted that Nezuko’s regeneration then surpassed her own.

Nezuko kicking the Temple Demon’s head off.

Immense Strength: Nezuko possesses naturally enhanced physical strength as a demon. Even at the start of the series when she first became a demon, she was strong enough to decapitate another demon with a kick. Nezuko also punched the Swamp Demon so hard that he coughed up blood, even overwhelming the demon with powerful punches and kicks. As she has no combat experience, Nezuko relies on brute strength, using her legs as her main weapon to deliver fast and strong kicks. Nezuko has also shown to increase her strength in battles during dire situations, like strengthening her legs to kick back Susamaru’s handballs despite having her legs torn off by them earlier. In her awakened state, she could pierce through the back of an Upper Rank demon with a kick and hold down the clones of Upper Rank Four, Hantengu. She was also capable of stopping an awakened Daki’s obi with her bare limbs. This same Obi was powerful enough to wound Tanjiro Kamado and wreak massive destruction upon multiple buildings.

Size Alteration: Upon being transformed into a demon, Nezuko displayed the basic ability to change and alter her body’s size and height. She was able to shrink herself into the physical size of a small child in order to fit inside a small box or a basket in order to hide from sunlight when traveling through during the daytime with Tanjiro and could enlarge herself into a much bigger form, in order to be able to battle against demons.

Fighting Style

Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Nezuko’s fighting style mainly revolved around the use of her powerful legs and sharp nails. Since transforming into a demon, she has been a major contributor to battles fought by Tanjiro, frequently assisting in the occasion that he is overwhelmed by an opponent. She was skilled enough to fight back the likes of the Upper Rank demons in the Twelve Kizuki, and numerous demons before that. She doesn’t use her Blood Demon Arts as often, as using too much blood could make her fall asleep.[15]

Blood Demon Art

Nezuko burning Daki using her Blood Demon Art.

Pyrokinesis: Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art allows her to generate and manipulate special demonic flames created from her blood that are pinkish in color. Her flames have a special property which makes it only harmful to demons and objects of demon origin while being completely harmless to humans and other objects. This was shown when her fire could burn Rui’s threads, Enmu’s dream spell, Daki’s body, Hantengu’s manifestations of emotion, and Genya Shinazugawa who had consumed demons but unable to affect Tanjiro and the Mugen Train. These flames of purification have been noted to hamper the regeneration of demons to an extent too, as shown with Daki’s sustained burns took much longer to heal than traditional wounds, needing to heal with aid from her brother’s stronger healing.

Nezuko has shown to be quite proficient in using her Blood Demon Art, from setting demons on fire to enhance the potency of her attacks, burning away Gyutaro’s poison to save Inosuke and Tengen Uzui from dying[16] and turning Tanjiro’s Nichirin Sword bright red, which gave him a much needed advantage against Hantengu’s clones.

Trivia

  • Nezuko is the first demon to ever be a member of the Demon Slayer Corps.
  • The first kanji of Nezuko’s name means «red bean» (禰豆 (ねず) nezu?) and is also part of the Japanese word for a flower, the Japanese Snowball ( () () () gonezu?). Whereas the second kanji is a common feminine suffix, which translates to «child» ( () ko?). The first kanji of her last name translates to a traditional Japanese wood or charcoal-fuelled cookstove/furnace ( (かま) kama?), while the second kanji means «door» ( () do?).
    • The fact that her surname translates to the word for a wood-fueled furnace is likely a reference to her family’s occupation prior to their demise.
  • The first part of her Japanese voice actress’ name, Akari Kitō ( () (とう) 明里 (あかり) Kitō Akari?), means «Demon» ( () ki?).
    • Nezuko and Kito also share the same height, 5’0″.
  • Nezuko’s rankings in the popularity polls are as follows:
    • Nezuko ranked 3rd place in the first popularity poll with 3,319 votes.
    • Nezuko ranked 11th place in the second popularity poll with 5,000 votes.
  • The reason Nezuko’s hair isn’t bound up now that she’s a demon is because Tanjiro is not that good at doing it for her and she cannot do it herself now. The accessory she has at the front is the one piece Tanjiro can do well for her, and since Nezuko doesn’t remove it, it stays on.
  • Nezuko gets really happy when her hair is braided like Mitsuri Kanroji’s. Tanjiro is shown trying to braid it for her after Chapter 105.[18]
  • Nezuko always dreams of her family. Zenitsu and Inosuke, as well as other people who have been nice to her will make appearances as well.[citation needed]
  • Before becoming a demon, Takeo once asked Nezuko about her ideal man. She replied by saying «My ideal man is like a rook!«, referring to a shogi piece that can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically.[19]

  • Nezuko’s favorite food is konpeitō ( (こん) (ぺい) (とう) Konpeitō?), Japanese colored sugar sweets shaped like tiny-orbs with small bulges all around it.
  • In Kimetsu Academy, Nezuko is a girl who’s known to bite baguettes and keeps it in her mouth, referencing her bamboo muzzle.[20]

Quotes

  • (To herself) «Humans are to be protected and saved… I will never hurt them.» [21]
  • (To Tanjiro Kamado) «Stop apologizing, Tanjiro. Why are you always saying you’re sorry? Is it because we were poor? Did you feel unworthy because you wore a tattered kimono? Is that why you’re always looking to take the blame? That’s just the way things were when father died. We tried as hard as we could, but it didn’t work. It’s no one’s fault. Things don’t go exactly the way we want them to. We’re only human. You get to decide where your happiness comes from. What’s important is now. Let’s look to the future. Let’s do our bestーtogether!«[22]
  • (To Tanjiro Kamado) «My dear brother! I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I didn’t understand for so long. I put everything on your shoulders. Why is it you who always has to suffer? Why do kind people who struggle every day get trampled over and over? It’s frustrating but don’t give in! It is almost over so don’t turn into a demon. Let’s go home. Let’s go back home together.«[23]

Перевод «Незуко» на английский

К сожалению, Незуко сама превратилась в кровожадного демона.

Unfortunately, Nezuko has been turned into a bloodthirsty demon herself.

Вернувшись на следующий день, Танджиро встретился с неприглядным видом убитой всей его семьи, а его маленькая сестра Незуко была единственной выжившей.

Returning the next day, Tanjiro is met with the unsightly view of his entire family slaughtered, with his little sister Nezuko being the only survivor.

Выжить удается лишь Танджиро и его сестре Незуко, правда, теперь Танджиро — демон, но он все еще по неизвестным причинам мыслит, как человек, и проявляет эмоции, присущие человеческому виду.

Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident, though Nezuko is now a demon, but surprisingly still shows signs of human emotion and thought.

My dear brother! I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I didn’t understand for so long. I put everything on your shoulders. Why is it you who always has to suffer? Why do kind people who struggle every day get trampled over and over?

—Nezuko Kamado

Nezuko Kamado (竈門 (かまど) () () () , Kamado Nezuko) is a demon and the younger sister of Tanjiro Kamado and one of the two remaining members of the Kamado family. Formerly a human, she was attacked and turned into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji.

According to Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko was known as a great beauty in their home town.

Nezuko also wears a small pink ribbon on the left side of her head to keep her hair out of her face, along with the bamboo muzzle Giyu Tomioka gave her, which is secured around her jaw with a strip of red cloth.

When Nezuko transforms into her awakened form during her fight with Daki, she has a bigger, taller and curvaceous body and has longer hair that reaches to her feet. She loses both her bamboo muzzle and footwear, as well as the sleeves of her haori and kimono.

She wore the same kimono, just without her haori and with a white Onbuhimo cloth tied around her, which she used to carry her little brother, Rokuta Kamado, on her back.

Personality

Nezuko’s original personality as a human was that of a kind and caring girl who thought of others before herself much like her older brother, Tanjiro. Additionally, she was a responsible elder sister to her younger siblings and often put their needs first rather than her own. Nezuko is, however, not afraid to get in harm’s way, protecting her friends from demons even after being returned to a human state. It is also shown that Nezuko’s humane, laid-back demeanor supports this fact after Tanjiro apologized to her.

While Nezuko initially starts off like any other demon, bloodthirsty and hungry for human flesh, after seeing her brother’s desire to protect her from being killed by a Demon Slayer despite her being a demon, she changes completely and becomes fiercely protective of him. Unlike most demons who fully remember their human life, Nezuko seems to have forgotten a good portion of her memories as a human, besides those related to her family, and thus doesn’t retain the exact personality she had before transformation, instead acting akin of a child.

Since becoming a demon, Nezuko appears to have become rather brazen, and does not seem to fear fighting; she fiercely guards her brother as well as her allies. She has also developed a strong willpower, which can be seen through her refusal to consume human flesh or blood, even in cases of extreme injury or exposure to human blood, which can be seen when she refuses Sanemi Shinazugawa after he attempts to lure her into biting him with his Marechi blood. Her strong willpower remains even when she is no longer a demon, shown when she willingly leaps in front of Inosuke to protect him from her own brother, who had become a demon and was attempting to kill those around him.

However, after developing resistance towards sunlight, which allows her to go outside and interact with others more often, her speech has shown signs of improvement and she is able to fully pronounce words if someone else has just spoken them, or hears them repeated frequently enough.

It was later revealed by Tamayo that her missing memories and underdeveloped personality were due to her being not fully conscious, as she prioritized developing her resistance to sun to regaining her consciousness.

Trivia

  • The first kanji of Nezuko’s name means «red bean» (禰豆 (ねず) , nezu) and is also part of the Japanese word for a flower, the Japanese Snowball ( () () () , gonezu). Whereas the second kanji is a common feminine suffix, which translates to «child» ( () , ko). The first kanji of her last name translates to a traditional Japanese wood or charcoal-fuelled cookstove/furnace ( (かま) , kama), while the second kanji means «door» ( () , do).
    • The fact that her surname translates to the word for a wood-fueled furnace is likely a reference to her family’s occupation prior to their demise.
  • The first part of her Japanese voice actress’ name, Akari Kitō ( () (とう) 明里 (あかり) , Kitō Akari), means «Demon» ( () , ki).
  • Nezuko gets really happy when her hair is braided like Mitsuri Kanroji‘s. Tanjiro is shown trying to braid it for her after Chapter 105.
  • Nezuko always dreams of her family. Zenitsu and Inosuke, as well as other people who have been nice to her will make appearances as well.
  • Before becoming a demon, Takeo once asked Nezuko about her ideal man. She replied by saying «My ideal man is like a rook!«, referring to a shogi piece that can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
    • This may be a foreshadowing of Nezuko’s marriage of Zenitsu, since like a rook, he can travel great distances with a single move.
  • Nezuko is good at rock, paper, scissors. When she and her brother have to decide something and can’t come to an agreement, they play rock paper scissors, and she always wins.
  • Nezuko’s favorite food is konpeitō ( (こん) (ぺい) (とう) , Konpeitō), Japanese colored sugar sweets shaped like tiny-orbs with small bulges all around it.
  • In Kimetsu Academy, Nezuko’s a girl who’s known to bite Baguettes/French bread and keeps it in her mouth, referencing her bamboo muzzle.
