Poppy Playtime is an episodic horror video game developed and published by American indie developer Mob Entertainment. The player takes the role of a former employee of toy-making company Playtime Co., who revisits its abandoned toy factory 10 years after its staff’s disappearance. The player navigates through a first-person perspective and must solve puzzles, some requiring a gadget named the GrabPack, to progress while avoiding various enemies.

The first chapter was released on Steam for Microsoft Windows on October 12, 2021, and later for Android and iOS on March 11, 2022. The second chapter was released for Microsoft Windows on May 5, and for iOS and Android on August 15. All chapters after the first will be released as downloadable content. The game garnered positive reviews for its gameplay on its initial release, but the second chapter received mixed reviews for its numerous bugs. Additionally, the game developer team Mob Entertainment received harsh criticism for announcing non-fungible tokens of in-game content.

Gameplay

Poppy Playtime is a horror video game where the player plays as a former employee of Playtime Co. who returns to the abandoned toy factory of said company after receiving a letter from the staff who were thought to have disappeared 10 years ago.[1] The player discovers that the factory is filled with toys who are alive and malicious towards them,[2] and starts looking for a way to escape the premises.[3] Various VHS tapes can be found throughout the factory, each one giving a more in-depth explanation of the story.[4]

The game utilizes multiple puzzles throughout, which the player must solve in order to progress further, with some requiring a gadget named the GrabPack, a backpack that can be equipped with two extendable hands which can be used to pull and reach objects from a far distance, conduct electricity, and access certain doors;[5][6][7] in Chapter 2, it can also be used to swing across gaps and, with a green hand obtained during gameplay, transfer electricity between sources.[8]

Plot

Chapter 1 – A Tight Squeeze

The player receives a package that contains a VHS tape, which shows a commercial for the titular doll Poppy Playtime and tours of the factory before abruptly cutting to spliced-in footage of graffiti of a poppy, and a letter from the missing staff, requesting them to «find the flower». They then enter the abandoned toy factory and, after solving the code to a security door, acquire the GrabPack, which they use to unlock the door to the lobby. After entering the lobby, the player is introduced to Huggy Wuggy, who is on display in the center of the room. While trying to unlock one door in the lobby, the power suddenly cuts, forcing them to restore power in the power room.

After heading back to the lobby, they discover that Huggy has disappeared from his display. The player then restores power to a control panel in order to control an overhead crane and retrieve the right hand of the GrabPack, which they use to unlock a hatch to a conveyor belt that leads to the «Make-a-Friend» section of the factory, where they restore power to the machinery and manufacture a toy. They then place the toy in a scanner and open a door to a hallway which, after the player enters, Huggy suddenly appears from and chases the player through the vents. After reaching a dead-end, the player pulls down a box and breaks part of the conveyor belt, causing Huggy to fall to the bottom of the factory. They then head to the aforementioned graffiti and open a door to a hallway, leading to a room where they find Poppy in a case which the player opens, freeing Poppy.

Chapter 2 – Fly in a Web

After freeing Poppy from her case, the player explores the back halls of the factory, eventually finding the office of Elliot Ludwig, Playtime’s founder. After entering the vents in the office, they encounter Poppy, who thanks them for freeing her and offers to help them escape the factory by giving them a code to activate the factory’s train. However, she is grabbed and pulled deeper into the factory. As they approach the Game Station where the train is located, the player encounters Mommy Long Legs, who holds Poppy hostage and takes the red hand from the player’s GrabPack. She challenges the player to win the three games in the Game Station, and in return will give the player the code for the train, threatening to kill them if they disobey the rules. Making their way through the factory, the player crafts the green hand for the GrabPack and then proceeds through the three games.

The player is able to obtain two parts of the code before escaping during the third game, fleeing into the tunnels beneath the factory. An enraged Mommy accuses them of cheating and pursues them through the tunnels and back up into the factory until she becomes caught in the teeth of an industrial grinder, killing her. A needle-fingered hand rises to take her broken body away. The player finds Poppy trapped in a spider web with the third part of the code. After freeing her, the player boards the train to escape. However, Poppy diverts the train, saying that she could not let the player leave yet due to the events that had occurred inside the factory, claiming that she knows the player can handle whatever comes next. The train runs out of control and derails near a sign pointing to «Playcare».

Originally starting out as a Kickstarter campaign, the idea of Poppy Playtime was originally thought of by game director Isaac Christopherson, stating that people called most indie horror games ‘Walking Simulators’, giving Mob Entertainment the idea to «create something with gameplay that doesn’t feel quite so run-of-the-mill, while still staying exciting, terrifying, and unique.» A trailer for the game’s first chapter was uploaded in September 2021.[9][10]

In an interview with The New York Times, Zach Belanger stated that his idea behind Huggy Wuggy was to «create something entirely new», and that his technique of making him terrifying was by making him larger than everything on screen.[11]

The first chapter was released on Steam for Microsoft Windows on October 12, and later for Android and iOS on March 11, 2022.[12] After the first chapter’s release, official merchandise of the game began being released, including T-shirts, posters and plush toys,[13][14][15] as well as official collectibles produced by Youtooz.[16]

All chapters after the first will be released as downloadable content.[5] A trailer for Chapter 2, named Fly in a Web, was released on February 22, 2022,[17] with several teasers later being posted to Twitter,[18] including a teaser trailer on April 9.[19] In preparation of the second chapter’s release, the first chapter was made free.[20] The second chapter was then released on May 5, for Microsoft Windows[21] and then on August 15, for iOS and Android[22] and is estimated to be thrice as long as the first chapter.[23] A trailer for Chapter 3 was released on August 6, with the chapter expected to be released in 2023.[24]

Reception

Critical response

Poppy Playtime was well-received upon its initial release, receiving praise for its atmosphere, story, and character design,[25][26][27] as well as being compared to the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise,[18] with Screen Rant‘s Austin Geiger calling Poppy Playtime «more engaging» than Security Breach.[28] However, the first chapter has been criticized for its short length, claimed to being roughly 30–45 minutes long,[23][29] and some initially regarded the game as a Five Nights at Freddy’s clone.[30] The game also quickly gained exposure on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch,[31][32] with videos on the former reaching millions of views,[33] as well as games based on Poppy Playtime appearing on Roblox.[34]

Chapter 2 received mixed reviews on Steam, receiving praise for its voice acting and ending,[35] but also being criticized for its number of bugs and performance issues, including audio issues, crashes, lag, and the so-called «Barry glitch». Mob Entertainment responded with an apology and began rolling out patches for the aforementioned issues.[36]

Controversy

In December 2021, on Twitter, the developers announced non-fungible tokens of the in-game posters, which was quickly met with backlash and negative reviews from the community, as well as some users requesting refunds, arguing that the developers put lore of the game behind a paywall. In response, the developers deleted the announcement but were unable to remove the NFTs as well due to a contract they had signed, stating that they have to wait for it to expire.[37][38][39] On May 3, 2022, Mob Entertainment’s CEO Zach Belanger posted a statement on Twitter where he confirms that all profits earned from the NFTs would be going to the Clean Air Task Force organization.[40][41]

Around Poppy Playtime‘s release, developer Ekrcoaster claimed that Mob Entertainment plagiarized his game Venge. In the aforementioned statement, Belanger denied the allegations, stating that the claims were based around ‘past drama’ from 2017.[40][41]

Dorset Police and Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department both released a statement to parents regarding the character Huggy Wuggy on March 22, 2022,[42] and April 7,[43] respectively, claiming that due to the character’s name, various videos were not being blocked by «firewalls»[34][42] and filtered by parental filters on various platforms, including TikTok and YouTube Kids.[44] The former also claimed that various schools in the United Kingdom reported children recreating a game where one child hugs another and then whispers sinister things into the recipient’s ear.[45] It was also reported that a child had attempted to jump out of a window to mimic the character,[34] and that Luxemburg-Casco School District had received complaints from students claiming they could not sleep due to the character.[46] Fact-checking website Snopes confirmed that while there had been reports from parents within the United Kingdom, the police had incorrectly claimed that the character sang songs, despite said songs being fan-made and not appearing in-game. Snopes had also said that inappropriate videos involving the character were not available for younger users on TikTok and YouTube Kids, with spokespersons for each platform confirming so.[42]

In September 2022, El Observador reported that seven children at a school in Uruguay played a game based on Poppy Playtime that instructed them to commit self-harm using pencil sharpeners, with two being hospitalized as a result.[47] The president of the Institute of Children and Adolescents of Uruguay, Pablo Abdala, states that the incident «confirms that technological development entails a very severe risk».[48]

Spin-off

Project: Playtime

On October 31, 2022, Project: Playtime, a free-to-play co-op horror game that is a spin-off of Poppy Playtime, was announced and was released as early access on Steam on December 12, 2022,[49][50] missing its original set date of December 6 due to «server backend issues».[51] Six players are assigned as Survivors while another player is given the role of the Monster, which can either be Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs, or a new jack-in-the-box-themed character called Boxy Boo. Survivors are tasked with retrieving toy parts in order to assemble a large toy, while the Monster is tasked with finding the Survivors and killing them.[52]

Film adaptation

In April 2022, according to Deadline Hollywood, Mob Entertainment partnered with Studio71 to produce a film adaptation of the video game.[53] They reportedly sought to bring Roy Lee into the project.[54]

Merchandise

In November 2022, the sale of the Huggy Wuggy plush toys was banned by the Turkish Ministry of Trade, stating that the toys «do not meet the requirements of the Toy Safety Regulation.» Ministry of Family and Social Services also said it determined that the toy «had a negative effect on the psychosocial development of children.»[55]

In early 2023, Huggy Wuggy plush toys – both licensed and unlicensed – were highly in demand with toy sellers worldwide. The toys’ popularity was fueled by demand from children who encountered the character on YouTube.[11]

The unnamed protagonist receives an odd letter with a Vintage Poppy Commercial VHS Tape. The letter is misspelled and says that the employees are still at the factory, and they’re not missing. The letter then instructs to find the Poppy Flower, where it is soon revealed where Poppy is.

The protagonist arrives at the factory, where everything is completely abandoned. They manage to unlock the Color Code Room where, by watching the Blue VHS Tape, they obtain the GrabPack, but the red hand is missing. They open a door that leads them to the Playtime Area, where the protagonist activates the power to give the Huggy Wuggy statue a key in his hand, so the protagonist can unlock the Power Room. They manage to turn back on the electricity of the factory, but Huggy Wuggy disappeared mysteriously. The protagonist opens the Hallway, and as they move forward, Huggy’s arm was seen sticking out of the door but slides back in when the protagonist steps closer. The protagonist opens the door and find nothing. As they move to the Batteries Area, they find the Yellow VHS Tape and all the Batteries. When going up the stairs to attach all the Batteries, they see Huggy Wuggy staring at them creepily through a slightly ajar vent. When the protagonist approaches, the vents suddenly close, leaving Huggy Wuggy inside the vents and possibly finding another way out. With all the Batteries connected, the protagonist manages to obtain the red hand, and unlocks a vent door where they need to do a small, short puzzle to go further into the factory. They soon arrive at the Make-A-Friend area, and turn on the power to activate the Make-A-Friend machines. When the Cat-Bee toy is created, they place it beside the «Nobody Leaves Without a Toy» gate, and it opens as the Cat-Bee toy is scanned and accepted. As soon as the protagonist goes near the shadowy hallway, Huggy Wuggy suddenly appears and slowly chases down the protagonist. The protagonist is forced to run through the vents to run away from Huggy. At the end, in panic, the protagonist pulls down a giant box when Huggy Wuggy was about to break down the door. The box hits Huggy Wuggy right in the back, causing him to fall off a very high place to an unknown fate. The protagonist finally reaches the Poppy Flower and opens Poppy’s case. Poppy’s voice was heard talking about her case being opened, ending the chapter.

After the event of Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze, The Player follows Poppy, who, in response to the player’s rescue, decides to help The Player escape via the Game Station located deep under the facility. This plan is soon vandalized, as the chapter’s main antagonist, Mommy Long Legs assaults and snatches Poppy, forcing The Player to drop down to attempt to save her. Once in the station, Mommy Long Legs confronts The Player, stating that in order to escape, The Player must play three games that become increasingly more difficult.

The first game is Musical Memory, where The Player has to select the correct buttons. This will gradually get faster until the game malfunctions and an emergency stop is required. The Player then finds themselves in a rejected toys warehouse, where there is a switch to unlock the door which leads to the train station.

The second game is Wack-a-Wuggy, where The Player must hit the Mini Huggies, which are small, differently colored Huggy Wuggy toys as they as it comes out of holes in the wall across various areas.

The third game is Statues, a game similar to ‘Red Light. Green Light’, where The Player navigates a maze while being pursued by PJ Pug-a-Pillar. The Player stops when the lights turn on and can move when the lights go off.

The Player escapes the third game, which is obviously rigged (the ending is blocked by debris). However, this infuriates Mommy Long Legs in the process, who starts hunting down The Player, claiming we ‘cheated’, and that she is going to play ‘one last game’ with us, calling it ‘hide-and-seek’. Survive Mommy’s relentless chase, and The Player will then trap Mommy in a grinder and activate the lever, killing her. After this, a mysterious, claw-like hand appears from the bottom of the partially closed door and drags Mommy’s severed torso into the dark, before the door to the right opens, and The Player is let back into the Game Station. Navigating Bay 09 lets us find a trapped Poppy, and proceeds to free her. Poppy then boards the Train while The Player inputs the Train Code correctly, and the Train begins to move.

However, Poppy, witnessing our outstanding agility and intelligence, deems that we are ‘too perfect to lose’, and changed the train’s direction at the last second. Poppy then states she had ‘much time to think and reflect’, and that together, The Player and she can ‘set things right’. But before she can finish, a garbled static cuts her off. Poppy only has time to exclaim ‘what-?’ before the audio is cut off. The Train accelerates alarmingly. We can attempt to use the emergency stop, but it won’t change anything. The Train derails and crashes, and our vision fades into darkness after, but not before we see a sign for the Playcare. The chapter then ends.

Chapter 3

The plot of the chapter continues from the end of Chapter 2: Fly in a Web where The Player crashes the train near Playcare.

Trivia

  • On November 6, 2021, it was announced that Poppy Playtime would be having a DLC crossover with the multiplayer horror game Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals, and in March 2022, it was released.
    • Prior to the announcement, when asked if a crossover could happen, the official Monsters & Mortals Twitter account said that it was possible, but that they wanted to «see how long that one lasts».
  • Zachary Preciado has revealed that before coming up with the name «Poppy Playtime», they had other names for the game, such as «The Toy Game» and «Toy Story but Evil».[1] Mike said at one point they almost named the game «Tina Toytime».[2]
    • Another planned name was «Poppy’s Playtime», although this was changed last minute because the name was meant to be based off the titular character, Poppy Playtime.

Um… I wanted to thank you for freeing me, I was stuck in there for so long. Thank you.
Poppy thanking the Player for freeing her, in Chapter 2: Fly in a Web.

Poppy is the first toy produced by Playtime Co., who debuted in Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze. She is the titular character of the game, first appearing in the end of Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze as a minor character and later re-appearing in Chapter 2: Fly in a Web as its major deuteragonist.

Appearance

Poppy is a petite doll with chalk-white skin, freckles and rosy cheeks. She has red, curly hair tied into double pigtails, held up with a pair of powder blue ribbons. The way light reflects off her face suggests she is made from porcelain and glazed. She wears a large, flouncy powder blue gown with long frilly sleeves adorned with numerous bows, frills, and bustles, and a pair of black Mary Janes. She also wears deep red lipstick. She has a pair of thin, black eyebrows, and a pair of uncannily realistic-looking blue eyes framed by long lashes.

Personality

In her commercial, Poppy is seen to be a social, outgoing, dainty and elegant individual. She also cares a lot about her appearance since she always wants to look her best, as seen within the Vintage Poppy Commercial. She is also very courteous, politely asking her owner if they could polish her shoes and brush her hair.

As a living doll, although she still retains her general personality, Poppy acts somewhat different. At the start of Chapter 2: Fly in a Web, Poppy is first introduced with a bubbly, caring personality, thanking The Player for freeing her, patiently waiting for The Player as we climb up the vents in the Backrooms, and offering to help us escape the factory. She continues this personality throughout the start of the game. Although during the end of Chapter 2: Fly in a Web, this personality seems to have turned into a dark, blank personality with her asking creepy questions like, «Did you kill her?» Once we confirm Mommy’s death, Poppy boards the Train. Upon The Player entering the Train Code and starting the Train, Poppy decided not to let us leave yet, explaining how she knows we are capable of doing whatever she wants us to do. Its unknown why her personality made this questionable switch, although it is presumed that Poppy has been taken over by this ‘darkness’ or this could be her true colors.

In previously teased versions of old scenes Poppy was seen in, she indeed had this blank personality, but was still willing to help you as you helped her. Her unused train ending also has her offer to help us, even though most employees disappeared.

Story

Backstory

Poppy was created by Playtime Co. in 1950 with the intent of behaving and interacting in the way that humans do, such as talking and conversing, and she was introduced inside the Vintage Poppy Commercial. The VHS tape simply introduces her as a toy with the ability to converse with a child, a revolutionary technology of her era. As such, Poppy gained mass attention and became popular. Her final words in the commercial being, «I’m a real girl… just like you.» This lead to speculation that either Poppy is a human inside of the doll or this is just a reference to Pinocchio.

Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze

At the end of the chapter, Poppy is seen contained within a glass case. Once The Player opens the case, the lights start to flicker rapidly and her eyes open as she announces to The Player that they opened her case. It is unclear who or what put her inside the case and why she was in the case.

Chapter 2: Fly in a Web

We first meet Poppy at the very start of the game, in the Mommy Long Legs Commercial. If we listen closely, before her appearance, she whispers ‘wake up’ softly. After the glitching of said commercial, her face jumps out of the darkness, while she says ‘WAKE UP’ more forcefully. The commercial then cuts to black, and we don’t meet Poppy again until going into the Backrooms. Poppy seems to be free from her case, and we are initially startled by her accidentally pushing over a crate. She states that she was ‘just trying to get the power back on’, but allows us to do it on our own with our GrabPack. Once turning on the power, she tells us about how she has been ‘stuck in that case for so long’. She then offers to help us, as we ‘saved’ her when blindly opening her case. This assistance she offers is to escape the factory through the Game Station, by taking the Train which leads out of the factory, of which Poppy has the Train Code. Although The Player entered the factory to find the missing employees, we accept. Poppy then helps us navigate this Train Station throughout the vents, following and guiding us as we move. We then meet with Poppy in a room with a large hole, surrounded by locked doors. Poppy tells us to trust her, but before she can continue, she gets snatched away by Mommy Long Legs.

We then view Poppy in the clutches of Mommy Long Legs, in the Game Station Hallway. Mommy mocks Poppy whose mouth she’d covered with spiderwebs, explaining how it wouldn’t be fun if Poppy were to just give the player the Train Code to the Train. Instead, Mommy whisks Poppy away and makes us play three deadly games, each with their own antagonists, in order to get the Train Code and rescue Poppy. Upon completing all three mini-games, we must kill Mommy. After witnessing The Prototype dragging Mommy’s top half away, we then navigate through Bay 09 to find Poppy.

After going through Bay 09, we find Poppy in the Game Station Control room, trapped in spiderwebs, and alongside her is the final piece of Train Code. Upon using the GrabPack to free Poppy, she seems different. Her bubbly, fun personality has given way to a dark, sadistic one, as she coldly asks us if we killed Mommy. She congratulates us, then boards the Train, telling us that we need to leave. Once navigating to the front of the Train, we enter the Train Code and the Train starts. However, instead of escaping, Poppy suddenly decided to not let us leave yet and sends us deeper into the factory. She explains how she «had so much time to think and reflect» inside the case, and how she wants to «set things right» as she knows that we are capable of doing whatever she needs of us. She also says that «terrible things have happened» in the factory. Before Poppy can finish her monologue, she is caught off guard by the sound of an alarm clock, only having enough time to exclaim her surprise before the audio goes silent completely. The Train then speeds up alarmingly, and we along with Poppy derail and crash, witnessing the sign for Playcare before blacking out. It is currently unknown where Poppy is (if she’s still on the Train or kidnapped again), and who or what cut her off.

Poppy Playtime Maintenance

Poppy Playtime Maintenance is a tape that is not intended to be seen by the public eye. It is only accessible through the Poppy Playtime steam page and the official MOB Entertainment YouTube channel. For a tape that simply demonstrates to the viewer how to take care of one’s Poppy Playtime doll, it contains more secrets than one would expect.

As the VHS tape plays, it grows increasingly bizarre and twisted. The footage skips the third and fourth steps, and then the camera aims at Poppy laying face-down, eyes closed, apparently unconscious. The screen then cuts to a claw or tweezer pulling out Poppy’s voice box, though it comes out eerily soaked in blood, some even dried around the edges. Poppy then screams a roiling torrent of ‘LET ME GO’ at the viewers, hinting that she has become sentient and is desperate to escape this torture.

This further supports that like Huggy Wuggy and other toy experiments, Poppy is organic.

Abilities and Anatomy

Poppy, with her tiny stature, can navigate her way through the vents effortlessly to get around the factory. This allows her to follow The Player with relative ease, and even get ahead of them. She also seems to have a knack for working machines, as she changed the direction of the train that the Player and she are on at the last second with ease.

Trivia

  • Porcelain dolls were very popular as pretend-and-make-believe toys for young girls in the 90s.
    • Coincidentally, if Poppy was indeed made from porcelain, it would likely make her one of the most popular toys of Playtime Co.
  • The Poppy doll seen in the case, and later assisting The Player, is seemingly the original prototype of its toy type.
  • Both Stella Greyber and Poppy Playtime share the same voice actress.
    • Whether or not this is intentional as per the developer’s decision, or simply due to shortage of voice providers, it is still worth noting.
    • While people believed that Stella Greyber was Poppy, Chapter 2 disproves this by showing that Stella was still around during 1991 when Mommy was created.
  • It is theorized that Poppy Playtime is the adopted daughter of Elliot Ludwig.[2]
    • While the experiment was a success, Elliot isn’t exactly sure what he did, which we know based on the note about Experiment 814 in his office.
  • Extracts of poppies in real life are known as opium. The species of flower itself is also sometimes referred to as the Opium Poppy. Interestingly, opium is a drug used to induce death-like sleep and lull, while the flower itself was later worshiped widely as it was believed to have inhuman healing properties.
    • It was most probably why Experiment 814 was carried out: to learn and achieve immortality.
  • Although Poppy is revealed to be The Player’s ally in Chapter 2, it is partially theorized that she has many ulterior motives which could lead to her becoming an anti-hero; however, she might just need the Player’s help to defeat the Prototype and end its reign of terror.
  • A deleted audio of Poppy features a longer line from Poppy if she hadn’t been interrupted from talking to the Player by Mommy Long Legs kidnapping her by dragging her into the large hole. The deleted audio features Poppy instructing The Player on where to go.
  • A deleted animation from a MOB Games animator reveals that Poppy used to have a more monotone voice and stoic personality from the start of Chapter 2; she lacks the energetic and joyful persona she ultimately has in the final game. In the animation, Poppy’s monologue is longer and consists of information pertaining to the game’s plot like foreshadowing Mommy Long Legs potentially being a threat.[3][4]
  • Poppy, at least for now, is the only human toy there is from Playtime Co, as most other toys are all animals.
  • While it is unknown what happened to Poppy after the train crashed, it can be presumed that she was captured by the Prototype.
  • It is theorized that Poppy is the one talking to the Player when they die.
  • A deleted, fully recorded audio of Poppy showed an alternate ending that Poppy was supposed to have. In the audio, Poppy’s voice is a lot more monotone and her monologue was longer, revealing various information pertaining to the plot that was ultimately removed from the final game. The full, unedited audio can be found below.
