Sirius Black is a character in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Sirius was first mentioned briefly in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as a wizard who lent Rubeus Hagrid a flying motorbike shortly after Lord Voldemort killed James and Lily Potter. His character becomes prominent in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, in which he is the titular prisoner, and is also revealed to be the godfather of the central character Harry Potter. He is portrayed in the film adaptations by Gary Oldman.

Character background

Sirius Black is the last heir of the House of Black, a once notable Pure-blood Wizarding family. His parents, Orion and Walburga Black, were both Blacks by birth and second cousins. Sirius had a younger brother, Regulus Arcturus Black, and three older cousins: Bellatrix Lestrange, Andromeda Tonks (his favourite cousin and mother of Nymphadora Tonks), and Narcissa Malfoy (mother of Draco Malfoy). In line with the Black family tradition of naming children after stars and constellations, Sirius was named after the Dog Star. Sirius’s early life proved unhappy; he had come to hate most of his relatives, in particular his mother. He rejected his family’s pure-blood elitism and reverence for the Dark Arts. At Hogwarts, rather than be sorted into Slytherin like the rest of his family, Sirius was placed in Gryffindor.

In contrast to his home life, Sirius greatly enjoyed life at Hogwarts, where he was inseparable from his best friend, James Potter. Sirius and James were immensely popular and known for their exceptionally good looks. Students liked his biting humour, and teachers respected his intelligence, though not his behaviour. His popularity was not universal, as a mutual hatred sprang up between James and Severus Snape. Sirius actively supported James, leading to Snape developing an equal and lifelong loathing of Sirius. Sirius and James often went out of their way to bully Snape, whom they despised for his great interest in the Dark Arts. They also became best friends with Peter Pettigrew and Remus Lupin, whom they later discovered was a werewolf. To support Lupin, Sirius, James, and Peter secretly became Animagi, which allowed them to safely accompany Lupin during his transformations and keep him under control. Sirius’s form is that of a huge black dog, from which his nickname Padfoot was derived.

Sirius left home at the age of sixteen and took refuge with James and his parents. His outraged mother burned his name off the family tree. Sirius’ Uncle Alphard left him a large inheritance, causing Sirius’ mother to also remove Alphard’s name. He was left financially independent by his uncle’s generous bequest. After leaving school, Sirius fought against Voldemort, eventually joining the Order of the Phoenix. He remained close friends with James and eventually attended James and Lily Evans’ (now Lily Potter) wedding as their best man. When their son, Harry, was born, Lily and James named Sirius as Harry’s godfather.

When the Potters became aware that Harry was Voldemort’s specific target, Albus Dumbledore advised them to go into hiding using the Fidelius Charm, a highly complex spell allowing a secret to be concealed within another person. Trusting Sirius above all of their other friends, Lily and James wanted him to be their Secret Keeper. Sirius, however, worried that Voldemort would immediately suspect him of being the Potters’ Secret Keeper and would target him; so he convinced the Potters to reassign Pettigrew as their Secret Keeper because he did not believe Voldemort would ever suspect a “weak, talentless thing” like Pettigrew. As it turned out, Pettigrew was Voldemort’s spy within the Order. He betrayed the Potters to Voldemort, who subsequently tracked them down and murdered them.

After giving his motorbike to Hagrid so that Hagrid could deliver Harry to the Dursleys, Sirius then tracked down Pettigrew, determined to kill him in revenge. However, Pettigrew outwitted him: confronted by Sirius on a city street, he created an explosion, faking his own death (leaving a severed finger behind as evidence) and killing twelve Muggles in the process. Sirius was arrested, accused of murdering Pettigrew and the muggles and of serving Voldemort, and was promptly thrown in prison by Barty Crouch, Sr. without receiving a trial. He spent the next twelve years in Azkaban, brooding over his friends’ deaths and obsessing over Pettigrew’s betrayal. Sirius states that unlike most other Azkaban prisoners (who often became insane during their terms of imprisonment), he was able to keep his sanity because he knew he was innocent, and also used his Animagus form to ward off the Dementors, who are unable to perceive unsophisticated canine minds.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Twelve years into his sentence, Sirius sees a picture of the Weasley family on the front cover of the Daily Prophet. He notices Scabbers perched on Ron Weasley’s shoulder. This serves as a turning point in the series and sets the events of the third novel, as Sirius immediately recognises Scabbers as Pettigrew’s Animagus form. He realises that stationed at Hogwarts, Pettigrew will easily be able to deliver Harry to Voldemort should Voldemort ever regain power. This knowledge clears his mind and gives him the mental strength to escape Azkaban. He is the first person known to have escaped the wizard prison by his own means, accomplishing this feat by transforming into his Animagus dog form. The dementors’ inability to detect Animagi, along with his severe weight loss from malnutrition, allow him to slip through his cell bars. After his escape, Sirius takes refuge in and around Hogsmeade, intent on exacting revenge upon Pettigrew and remaining near Harry. Knowing that the dementors have been stationed around Hogsmeade and at Hogwarts, Sirius remains in his Animagus form during this time, and is able to enter the Hogwarts grounds without being recognised by the dementors. Harry catches several glimpses of Sirius in his dog form and mistakenly believes him to be the Grim. He befriends Hermione Granger’s cat Crookshanks, who is aware that Sirius is not actually a dog and who recognises Pettigrew for what he really is. Sirius breaks into Gryffindor tower at one point with a knife looking for Pettigrew, having had Crookshanks obtain Neville Longbottom’s list of the dorm passwords, and shreds Ron’s curtains after finding Pettigrew gone, due to Pettigrew having faked his death and framed Crookshanks. After Harry’s broom is destroyed by the Whomping Willow during a Quidditch match invaded by Dementors, Sirius anonymously sends Harry a Firebolt as a Christmas gift, although it is confiscated by Professor McGonagall on suspicion that the broom is jinxed.

Towards the end of the novel, Harry, Ron, and Hermione confront Sirius and Harry nearly kills him; however, Lupin’s timely intervention stops Harry. Lupin, who has learned that Sirius is innocent, is reunited in friendship with him. Pettigrew is unmasked, and, most importantly, Harry stops Sirius and Lupin from murdering Pettigrew, arguing that his father would not want his friends to commit murder. Harry begins to view Sirius as a surrogate father, although events swiftly turn against him again – Pettigrew escapes, and Sirius is captured by the dementors at Hogwarts and sentenced to the Dementor’s Kiss, a fate worse than death. Harry and Hermione help him escape with Buckbeak, a hippogriff who had also been unjustly condemned. Sirius is once again a wanted man.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Sirius flees Europe – to somewhere tropical, Harry believes – beyond the Ministry of Magic’s jurisdiction. There, he slowly recovers from his years in Azkaban and regains his health. Although he can only communicate sparingly with Harry by owl post, he gives Harry reasoned and sensible advice. Harry grows closer to Sirius and relies on his help. Sirius, worried, returns to Britain when Harry tells him that his scar has begun hurting him again (a signal of Voldemort’s presence), and when there are reports of Death Eater activities at the Quidditch World Cup. He sacrifices some of his regained health to help Harry; by the time he reaches Hogsmeade, he is once again gaunt and dishevelled, hiding in a cave with Buckbeak and surviving mainly on rats (with occasional gifts of food from Harry, Ron, and Hermione). He has little influence on Harry in this book; his presence cannot prevent the disaster at the Triwizard Tournament, and he mostly gives Harry advice on how to complete the Triwizard Tasks. He is later summoned to Hogwarts by Dumbledore and listens to Harry’s re-telling of Voldemort’s rebirth. Dumbledore tasks him with alerting Lupin, Arabella Figg, Mundungus Fletcher, and other members of the Order of the Phoenix, and is instructed by Dumbledore to lay low at Lupin’s for a while. Sirius reassures Harry, who does not want him to leave, that they will see each other again soon and then departs.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Sirius takes refuge in his ancient family home at 12, Grimmauld Place. As the last Black, Sirius inherits the property and allows it to be used as the Order headquarters, although it had fallen into disrepair. Due to the ongoing manhunt, Sirius is confined there. His confinement causes depression, and he is frequently withdrawn and antagonistic – especially so by Snape’s increasingly important role within the Order. Harry detects a whiff of alcohol on his breath. The hostility between himself and Kreacher, his demented house-elf, also affects him, and he is consistently hateful towards Kreacher. When he briefly leaves the house to see Harry off to Hogwarts, his Animagus form is recognised by Draco and Lucius Malfoy, resulting in more threats and warnings. Harry and Sirius stay in touch through owls and the Floo Network, a system to communicate through fireplaces. Sirius is nearly captured by Dolores Umbridge, a Ministry official who is monitoring the Network and the owl mail in and out of Hogwarts. Near the middle of the novel, a large number of Death Eaters, including Sirius’s hated cousin Bellatrix, escape Azkaban. The Ministry, which refuses to accept that Voldemort has returned and that the dementors have joined him, tries to blame on Sirius, stating that Sirius helped the prisoners escape and is leading them.

Sirius acts as a father figure to Harry throughout the book. Fun-loving, bold, and reckless, he encourages Harry to oppose Umbridge and her reforms and strongly approves of Harry starting the secret defensive tutorial group for students, Dumbledore’s Army. He also demonstrates a high-level of trust in and respect for Harry, willingly answering the latter’s questions about the Order and Voldemort. Sirius’ long incarceration at a young age affected his emotional development. Lupin and Molly Weasley express disapproval for Sirius’s behaviour around Harry, stating that Sirius treats his godson as if he is James, Harry’s father, and that this is inappropriate.

With his growing power, Voldemort implants a false vision into Harry’s mind that Sirius is captive and under torture at the Department of Mysteries. Harry tries to contact Sirius at Grimmauld Place through the Floo Network, in order to determine whether he is at the Ministry or not; however, he discovers that the house is seemingly deserted apart from Kreacher, who tells Harry that Sirius will not return from the Ministry. Convinced that Voldemort is torturing Sirius, Harry and his friends enter the deserted Ministry and gain access to the Department of Mysteries. When they are ambushed by Death Eaters, Harry realises Voldemort lured him into a trap. It is Snape, however, who saves them; after confirming that Sirius is safe at Grimmauld Place (it is later revealed that Sirius had been upstairs tending to Buckbeak the Hippogriff and therefore had not been in sight when Harry tried to contact him), Snape alerts the Order that the students are missing and have gone to the Ministry. The Order immediately sends a rescue team including Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, Alastor Moody, and Kingsley Shacklebolt. Sirius, desperate for any time out of his confinement, comes along too.

The Order battles the Death Eaters in the «Death Chamber.» During a frenzied duel with Bellatrix, Sirius taunts her for failing to harm him. Bellatrix strikes Sirius with a curse, sending him backwards into the veil and to his death. Overcome with grief and rage, Harry tries – and fails – to get revenge on Bellatrix, only to be interrupted by Voldemort’s arrival. After a short duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore, Voldemort flees, but not before being seen by the Minister for Magic and other Ministry officials. As a result, the Ministry abandons its stance that Voldemort has not returned, and Dumbledore is trusted once more. He, in turn, persuades the Minister that Sirius is innocent. By the following book, Sirius is exonerated; unfortunately, it is far too late. Dumbledore refers to this as «a brutal ending to what was going to be a long and happy relationship.»^[1] Harry is left to mourn Sirius, reflecting that, despite his flaws, he was a loving and protective godfather, and the closest thing Harry had ever had to a real parent. Harry inherits all of Sirius’s possessions, including the house at Grimmauld Place, the house-elf Kreacher, and Buckbeak the Hippogriff.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

As stated by J. K. Rowling during the BBC Paxman interview, 2003, Sirius is «definitely dead.»^[2] She has created further intrigue, however, by making a cryptic reference to the communication mirror Sirius gave to Harry before he died: «The mirror might not have helped as much as you think, but on the other hand, will help more than you think. You’ll have to read the final book to understand that!»^[3] In the final book, Aberforth Dumbledore uses the two-way mirror – which he bought from Mundungus Fletcher a year prior – to see Harry in the Malfoy Manor cellars, which enables Aberforth to send Dobby to rescue Harry.

Sirius makes his final appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when Harry discovers the Resurrection Stone within the golden snitch. Appearing as a ghostly figure alongside Lily, James and Lupin, Sirius supports Harry’s walk into death and assures him that dying is, «Quicker and easier than falling asleep.» He also promises Harry that the four will always remain a part of him.

Rowling revealed a family tree in the J. K. Rowling Documentary on ITV concerning all of the grandchildren of the Weasley family. In this family tree, it is known that Harry named his first son James Sirius, after his father and godfather.^[4]

Harry Potter prequel

Sirius and James are the protagonists of an 800-word story set three years before Harry’s birth.^[5] The two friends are riding Sirius’s motorbike and are chased by two Muggle policemen for breaking the speed limit. The policemen attempt to arrest them when three Death Eaters on broomsticks fly down towards them. Sirius and James use the police car as a barrier and the Death Eaters crash into it. In the end, they escape from the policemen flying on the motorbike.

Portrayals within films

Gary Oldman first portrayed Sirius in the film adaptation of Prisoner of Azkaban. Oldman revealed that he accepted the part because he needed the money, as also because he had not taken on any major work in several years as he had decided to spend more time with his family.^[6] The actor compared Sirius to John Lennon,^[6] and also said he was «surprised by how difficult it was to pull off», comparing the role to Shakespearean dialogue. Oldman suggested Sirius’s hairstyle, while Alfonso Cuarón, the director of the third film, designed his tattoos.^[7] He had read the first book, and his children were fans of the series. The part made Oldman a hero with his children and their schoolmates.^[8] Oldman said about his work in the Harry Potter films that he has «…done so much R-rated work, it’s nice to have a job you can show your kids».^[9] Oldman was said to bring energy to the character of Sirius, and the actor stated that this energy came from Cuarón and described him as having «such enthusiasm and a joy for life».^[7]

Though Sirius appears several times during Goblet of Fire, the character appears very briefly in the film adaptation, in an expository scene in the Gryffindor common room’s fireplace, with Oldman providing the voice. The actor appears again in Order of the Phoenix. It has been stated that Oldman and Daniel Radcliffe became very close during the filming of the series. Sirius as a teenager also made a brief appearance in Order of the Phoenix, played by James Walters.^{[citation needed]}

Just as in the book, Sirius returns via the Resurrection Stone in The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 alongside James, Lily and Remus right before Harry enters the Forbidden Forest to face Voldemort. The character is referenced for the final time in the last scene, where it is revealed that Harry and Ginny’s first born son was named after both James and Sirius.^[10]

Attributes

Outward appearance

Sirius is described as a tall man with long, black hair and grey eyes.^[11] Several times during the series, Sirius is stated to be very good-looking^[12][13] and «carelessly handsome»^[14] prior to his imprisonment; Harry also noted that as a teenager, Sirius always had a slightly spoiled, haughty look on his face. His long years in Azkaban made his face gaunt, and lack of grooming resulted in long, dirty hair and yellow teeth. Harry’s first impression of Sirius is of a corpse.^[15]

Personality

As a student at Hogwarts, Sirius was well-known for being a troublemaker, and once mentioned to Harry that he, James, Lupin, and Pettigrew «were all idiots.»^[16] He once stated that he had never been appointed a prefect as he always spent too much time in detention with James.^[17] Sirius is protective of Harry, but also encourages him to take unwise risks and sometimes — inappropriately — acts with him as he used to with James.^[18] On this, the author commented that «what Harry craves is a father.»^[19] Rowling has stated that though she likes Sirius, «I do not think he is wholly wonderful.»^[20] According to her, despite being brave and loyal, Sirius is also reckless, embittered, and «slightly unbalanced by his long stay in Azkaban.»^[20] When asked if Harry has a godmother, Rowling replied that «Sirius was always too busy being a big rebel to get married.»^[21]

Unlike his parents and brother, Sirius detested the Dark Arts and did not believe in the so-called purity of blood. Rowling has said that Sirius has also proven to «be very good at spouting bits of excellent personal philosophy, but he does not always live up to them.» This primarily has to do with his treatment of Kreacher the house-elf; because Kreacher was a reminder to Sirius of the home he had always hated (and also due to Kreacher’s parading of the attitudes and views of Sirius’s parents), Sirius is hateful to Kreacher and consistently mistreats him. This in turn comes back to haunt him, as Kreacher eventually betrays Sirius to Voldemort, leading to Sirius’s death. Rowling has also stated that unlike Lupin, who is the same age as Sirius and appears more mature in nature, Sirius never really grew up, as he was placed in Azkaban during his early twenties and therefore had not had a very normal adult life. Despite all of this, Rowling states that Sirius’s «redeeming quality is the affection that he is capable of feeling. He loved James like a brother and went on to transfer this attachment to Harry.»^[20][22]

Magical ability

Sirius was described as a powerful wizard by Minerva McGonagall, his former teacher.

Sirius became an Animagus at only age fifteen, and was able to turn himself into a large black dog. As he is unregistered, he is able to take advantage of his ability to continually elude the Ministry of Magic. In his Fifth year, Sirius held his own against Severus Snape, who «knew more jinxes in his first year than most seventh years». During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, he survived a duel against Antonin Dolohov. However in the following fight against his cousin Bellatrix, he underestimated his opponent and even openly mocked her, before being hit by an unknown spell that blew Sirius backwards and he disappeared through the veil in the Death Chamber.

Most of the members of The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black were advocates of blood purity, and many were involved with the Dark Arts. The Black family home at Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, London, contains many artefacts of dubious origin and/or dangerous ability. The family motto is Toujours Pur, which is French for «Always/Still Pure,» because the Black family is one of the few remaining completely pure blood lineages.

The Blacks intermarried with several other pure-blood families, including the families of known Dark (or at least, malicious) wizards such as Bulstrode, Crabbe, Flint, Lestrange, Malfoy, Rosier, and Yaxley, but also non-Dark families such as Crouch, Longbottom, Macmillan, Potter, Prewett, and Weasley. This was done to ensure that pure-bloods would last in the years to come. That is why most of the pure-blood families are interrelated; because their ancestors married other pure-bloods. The last several generations of Blacks all trace their ancestry back to Phineas Nigellus Black and Ursula Flint. The Blacks believed in Voldemort’s idea of «purifying the Wizarding race», but many, such as Sirius’s parents, refrained from outwardly supporting him once they saw what he was willing to do for power. Sirius’s brother, Regulus Black, was a Death Eater, but later reconsidered after Voldemort tried to kill the house elf Kreacher. Although there are several living Black family members throughout the series, all are either female, female-line distaff Black descendants, or descendants of disowned family members, and none of them has the name of Black. The last known surviving bearer of the family name, Sirius, is murdered by his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The family tree is described in the fifth book, but it came more directly to public attention in January 2006 when the author donated a version she had hand-drawn to a Book Aid International charity auction. The tree shows the members of one of the oldest magical families, and their links by marriage to a number of other families whose members also appear in the books. The tree described in the books extends back some seven hundred years, but the version drawn by Rowling only covers approximately one hundred fifty years. Exact details of the tree were kept secret during the charity auction by publishing only incomplete or partially blurred images of the item for sale. However, a number of people attending the auction made notes that were used to confirm the details upon it, and a compilation of the details was published. This was later amended by further information from another copy of the tree incorporated into the film set for Order of the Phoenix where the tree appears displayed in the Black family house, Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. The tree caused a considerable stir amongst fans as it provided new information about elements of the plot of the series in between publication of volumes six (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and seven (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). It was eventually purchased for £30,000 on behalf of British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter in the film series.^[23]

• Isla Black of the first generation shown was disowned for marrying Bob Hitchens, a Muggle.
• Phineas Black of the second generation shown was disowned for supporting Muggle rights.
• Marius Black, third generation son of Cygnus and Violetta Black (née Violetta Bulstrode), was disowned as he was a Squib.
• Cedrella Black, also third generation and cousin of Marius, was disowned for marrying a blood traitor, Septimus Weasley.
• Alphard Black of the fourth generation shown was posthumously disowned for leaving gold in his will to his «runaway nephew», Sirius Black.
• Sirius Black of the fifth generation shown, ran away from home and was subsequently removed.
• Andromeda Black, cousin of Sirius, was disowned for marrying Muggle-Born Ted Tonks.

Reception

Sirius is often regarded as one of the best characters in the Harry Potter lore, as well as often being recognised as Harry’s most notable father-figure. IGN ranked Sirius as the 8th best character in the Harry Potter universe stating, «it’s the father/son relationship that begins to develop between Sirius and Harry that endears the character to us.»^[24] Separately, WatchMojo.com placed Sirius as the 4th best character in the franchise, again citing his fatherly relationship with Harry as a highpoint of praise.^[25] The character’s untimely death in Order of the Phoenix is often regarded as one of the most emotional and heartbreaking moments of the series.^[26]

У Сириуса есть два дяди по матери: Альфард Блэк и Сигнус Блэк III, одна тётя по отцу: Лукреция Пруэтт (Блэк), двоюродные сестры: Беллатриса Лестрейндж, Андромеда Тонкс и Нарцисса Малфой.

Родители приветствовали решение Беллатрисы и Нарциссы соединиться с чистокровными семействами Лестрейнджей и Малфоев, тогда как имя Андромеды за брак с маглорождённым было удалено с гобелена родового древа Блэков. Та же участь постигла дядю Альфарда за помощь взрослому Сириусу деньгами и домом. Регулусом же родители были очень довольны: он проявлял все качества «истинных Блэков» и даже стал в весьма юном возрасте Пожирателем смерти. Биография

Учёба в Хогвартсе

Сириус был лучшим другом отца Гарри Поттера — Джеймса Поттера, ещё с Хогвартса (мальчики были связаны родственными узами посредством брака Карлуса Поттера и Дореи Блэк — двоюродной бабушки Сириуса). Помимо Джеймса Сириус дружил с Римусом Люпином и Питером Петтигрю. Четверо друзей называли себя «Мародёрами» и частенько хулиганили, иногда весьма злобно. Изготовили «Карту Мародёров». Вскоре после знакомства Сириус и его друзья узнают, что Люпин — оборотень. Но вместо того, чтобы отвернуться от Люпина, друзья решают стать анимагами, чтобы составлять компанию Люпину во время его ночных «прогулок». И уже к 5 курсу вся компания без проблем стала превращаться в животных: Сириус — в большого чёрного пса, Джеймс — в большого оленя, а Питер становился маленькой крысой.

От рождения до крестин Гарри

Домашняя обстановка Сириусу очень не нравилась и даже раздражала его. В раннем детстве он привык получать всё, что пожелает: ну как же, «быть Блэком, это почти то же самое, что быть отпрыском королевской крови». Некоторые замашки представителя «золотой молодёжи» остались у него даже после Азкабана. Однако после того, как Сириус столь неожиданно для родителей попал в Гриффиндор, они к нему постепенно охладели. Пытаясь вернуть сына «на путь истинный», постоянно ставили ему в пример младшего брата и читали нравоучения. И так ему надоели «со своей манией чистой крови», что в шестнадцать лет Сириус бежал из дома и поселился в доме Поттеров, где его встретили как родного сына — с распростёртыми объятиями. Ноябрьское происшествие с Петтигрю

Из Блэка получился никудышный психолог: Хвост примкнул в своё время к «мародёрам» в поисках сильных личностей, в тени которых ему будет спокойно и комфортно жить. Поэтому, когда покровительство Джеймса, Римуса и Сириуса стало шатким, Питер начал поиски нового хозяина. Именно Питер Петтигрю и стал тем предателем, о котором догадывались орденцы. Он выдал Волан-де-Морту местоположение семьи Поттеров и тем обрёк их, беззащитных, на верную смерть. Волан-де-Морт явился в дом Поттеров на исходе дня 31 октября 1981 года, убил Джеймса и Лили, и попытался убить маленького Гарри, но… вместо этого исчез сам. Сириус, узнав о несчастье, сразу же отправился к руинам дома Поттеров на своём летающем мотоцикле. Там он встретил Хагрида, который получил приказ от Дамблдора доставить Гарри к Дурслям. Петтигрю был вскоре найден Сириусом на одной людной магловской улице Лондона. Здесь произошла их схватка. Петтигрю прилюдно обвинил Сириуса в предательстве Поттеров, отрезал себе палец и превратился в крысу, создав при этом оглушительный взрыв. Петтигрю исчез, а Сириус был схвачен прибывшими из министерства мракоборцами. Свидетели-маглы безусловно признали виновным Сириуса. (После опроса маглам стёрли память специальными заклинаниями). Сириус же за убийство маглов и Петтигрю получил пожизненный срок в Азкабане, причём без суда и следствия. Гарри узнаёт об этом от Сириуса и Люпина на третьем курсе.

Заключение в Азкабане

Сириус долгое время провёл в Азкабане — с ноября 1981 по июнь 1993 года (то есть почти 12 лет). В этот период времени Сириус непрерывно сражался за свою жизнь, и ещё больше — за свой рассудок, ведь в Азкабане заключённые рано или поздно сходят с ума. Сириусу значительно помогали его магические возможности анимага. Превращаясь в большую чёрную собаку, Сириус практически не замечал дементоров, точнее — они теряли к нему интерес. Навязчивая мысль о том, что он сидит за чужую вину, а предатель разгуливает на свободе, не была счастливой, поэтому дементоры её не могли высосать. И эта мысль была тем стержнем, за который держался разум Блэка. За время заключения Сириус так отощал, что смог пролезть через решётку камеры, и в образе пса незамеченным сбежать из Азкабана.

Бегство из Азкабана и знакомство с Гарри

В июне 1993 года Азкабан посещал Корнелиус Фадж — министр магии. Он привёз газеты заключённым, одна из которых досталась Сириусу. На её первой странице было изображено семейство Уизли, выигравшее тур в Египет. Сириуса заинтересовала на этой фотографии маленькая крыса, сидевшая на плече у Рона Уизли. У неё не доставало одного пальца на лапе. Сириус сразу же понял, что крыса — это Петтигрю, которому он должен отомстить. Эта идея завладела Сириусом. Даже стража Азкабана заметила, что он каждую ночь шептал: «Он в Хогвартсе…». После бегства Сириуса из Азкабана многие считали, что эти слова относятся к Гарри, но это оказалось не так. В одно июньское утро, когда дементоры разносили еду по камерам, Сириус выскочил через приоткрытую дверь камеры в облике пса. Так как дементорам чуждо восприятие животных, некоторое время никто не поднимал тревоги по поводу его исчезновения. Сириус же покинул остров-тюрьму, и, переплыв пролив между островом и материком, долго скитался, уходя как можно дальше от дементоров. В конце июля он добрался до городка, в котором жил Гарри. Это был большой крюк на пути к Хогвартсу, куда стремился Блэк, но, во-первых, времени до сентября, когда начнутся занятия и старая крыса Питер появится в замке с младшим Уизли, было достаточно, а во-вторых, ему очень хотелось взглянуть на выросшего крестника.

Поздним вечером Гарри, который только что сбежал от Дурслей, заметил Сириуса между домами в облике огромного пса. Мальчик так при этом испугался, что едва не попал под колёса автобуса «Ночной Рыцарь». После этого происшествия Сириус добрался до Хогсмида, где устроил своеобразную «штаб-квартиру» в старой доброй «Визжащей хижине», дожидаясь приезда учеников в Хогвартс. Его не остановило даже присутствие дементоров, специально из-за него патрулирующих периметр территории замка. В этом году в школу в качестве преподавателя Защиты от Тёмных искусств приглашён Римус Люпин, но на помощь старого школьного товарища Сириусу рассчитывать не приходится: Люпин уверен в виновности Блэка. Вот с кем он действительно подружился, и кто всячески помогал Сириусу проникнуть в Хогвартс — это… кот Гермионы Живоглот. Сириусу удалось сделать это трижды. Первый раз он появился на стадионе во время матча Гриффиндор-Пуффендуй, правда, он вновь сильно напугал Гарри (тот принял Сириуса за пса Грима — предвестника скоропостижной кончины).

Второй раз Сириус, пробравшись в замок через потайной лаз, попытался заставить Полную Даму открыть дверь в общую гостиную Гриффиндора, после чего перепуганные преподаватели прочесали Хогвартс, но никого не нашли. Министерство после этого ужесточило охрану замка и окрестностей дементорами. Из всех портретов Хогвартса охранять вход в гостиную Гриффиндора согласился лишь Сэр Кэдоган, и так замучил учеников частой сменой паролей, что Невилл Долгопупс вынужден был все пароли записать на бумажку… которую благополучно из спальни мальчиков стащил Живоглот. Пробравшийся ночью в замок Сириус торжественно зачитал «грозному стражу» все пароли, спокойно прошёл в спальню, и попытался убить Питера. Питера, а не проснувшегося и заоравшего с перепугу Рона… Петтигрю понял, что Блэк не успокоится, пока не найдёт его. Поэтому он инсценировал свою смерть (перепачканная кровью простыня и пара волосков из шерсти Живоглота — не так это было и сложно) и сбежал. Правда, недалеко: в хижину Хагрида, где его случайно обнаружили Гарри, Рон и Гермиона. Был конец учебного года (июнь 1994 года), когда в результате погони за крысой Коростой (под этим именем Рон знал Питера Петтигрю) ребята попадают в «логово Блэка» — Визжащую Хижину. Там они поначалу приняли Сириуса за врага — Пожирателя смерти, но после разговора с прибежавшим Люпином (он давно уже присматривал за Гарри с помощью «карты Мародёров») и с самим Сириусом, а главное, после превращения крысы Рона в Петтигрю, достаточно быстро разобрались, кто кого действительно предал 13 лет назад (Сириус поведал друзьям всю правду про события октября-ноября 1981 года).

Потом… Потом случилось много событий: Люпина так не вовремя настиг приступ ликантропии, Питер воспользовался заминкой и, вновь обратившись в крысу, сбежал, а стараниями Снегга Сириуса схватили и посадили в башню замка до наказания — поцелуя дементора. Но Гарри и Гермиона, воспользовавшись маховиком времени, спасли Сириуса — он улетел на приговорённом к смерти (и также несправедливо) и спасённом ребятами гиппогрифе Клювокрыле.

Последний промежуток жизни

Последние 2 года жизни Сириуса — с июня 1994 по июнь 1996 года — от его встречи с Гарри и его друзьями в Визжащей хижине и до смерти в Министерстве Магии. За этот короткий промежуток мы узнали о Сириусе больше всего, т.к. он принимает живейшее участие в жизни Гарри, даже когда не может быть рядом с крестником. Вначале (лето 1994 года) Сириус покидает территорию замка и отправляется совсем в другую часть Англии, там он как бы случайно показывается маглам, чтобы дементоров убрали с охраны замка. Затем Сириус перемещается в дальние южные страны, время от времени связывается с Гарри, а 22 ноября 1994 даже общается с ним с помощью Летучего пороха (специальная каминная связь). Сириус постоянно даёт Гарри советы, наставления и становится для Гарри больше, чем другом, он становится кем-то вроде старшего брата и отца в одном лице: он становится для Гарри родным. Зимой 1994-95 года Гарри, Рон и Гермиона встречаются с Сириусом в Хогсмиде, и он оседает в Англии после долгих странствий вне дома. С лета 1995 года Сириус проживает в доме своей покойной матушки — Вальбурги Блэк. Здесь он томится от запрета покидать дом (Дамблдор боится за его жизнь и высказывается категорически против его «прогулок» даже в облике собаки), остро переживает свою неспособность активно помогать вновь восстановленному Ордену феникса. Чуть позже, после прочтения седьмой книги читателям представляется возможность провести параллель между сидением Джеймса Поттера и его семьи под заклятием Фиделиус и «вынужденным заключением» Сириуса. В августе 1981 Лили в своём письме пеняет Блэку, что тот не навещает друга. Всю безрадостность их положения Сириус ощутил лишь сейчас. Его одиночество скрашивают приезды Гарри и друзей летом 1995 года и в январе 1996 года. В это время Сириус пишет Гарри письма, ухаживает за Клювокрылом. Так проходит всё время Сириуса до рокового июня 1996 года. Эти события описаны в четвёртой и пятой книгах.

Сражение в Отделе тайн и смерть

Волан-де-Морт обманом заманивает Гарри Поттера в Министерство магии. Об этом Ордену Феникса становится известно от Северуса Снегга.

На подмогу Гарри в Отдел тайн Дамблдор отправляет лучших бойцов Ордена. В их число входит и Сириус Блэк (он сам настоял на отправке на это задание). На месте Сириус яростно сражается с Долоховым, потом перебрасывается парой слов с Гарри, спасает его от смертоносного луча и предлагает ему бежать. После этого Сириус вступает в сражение с Беллой. От первого луча Сириус уворачивается, а второй попадает ему в грудь, и отбрасывает прямо в занавес Арки Смерти, откуда возврата уже нет. Гарри, увидев, что Сириус не появляется, хочет последовать за ним, но Люпин запрещает Гарри идти в Арку, говоря, что Сириуса уже не вернёшь (из-за занавеса живыми не выходят). После Гарри много горевал, злился на себя и окружающих (в особенности в кабинете Дамблдора сразу после сражения в Отделе тайн), но всё-таки понемногу успокоился после наставлений Дамблдора и разговора с Полумной Лавгуд.^[4]

Мотоцикл Сириуса Блэка	Блэк владел им в молодости. После смерти Лили и Джеймса Поттеров был отдан Сириусом Рубеусу Хагриду. Через несколько лет был модернизирован Артуром Уизли. Был разрушен в ходе операции «Семь Поттеров», но, скорее всего, починен Артуром Уизли, который забрал его себе и продолжил его улучшение.

Этимология

• Имя Сириусу дали в честь ярчайшей звезды ночного небосвода, следуя древней традиции давать детям «астрономические» имена. Это самая яркая звезда в созвездии Большого Пса, что является отсылкой к анимагическому образу Сириуса Блэка — большой чёрный пёс.
• Sirius является латинской транскрипцией греческого Σείριος — «яркий», «блестящий». Латинское название Сириуса звучит как «Каникула» — «маленькая собачка», что так же является отсылкой к анимагическому образу Блэка.
• Фамилия Блэк означает «чёрный», и чаще всего такую фамилию получают черноволосые люди. Но, возможно, родоначальники Блэков получили свою фамилию не из-за волос, а из-за дел.

Блэки

К своей семье Сириус относился весьма неоднозначно. Ни слова мы не слышим от Сириуса об отце, но о матери и брате он отзывается без всякой теплоты. Чересчур властная Вальбурга своими нравоучениями, похоже, настроила сына против себя, а похвалы послушному Регулусу отдалили Сириуса и от брата. Уже к одиннадцати годам юный Блэк настолько ненавидит всё, что олицетворяют Блэки, что с удовольствием поступает на Гриффиндор.

Сириус про Беллатрису

Кузину Беллатрису Сириус Блэк ненавидел всей душой. Именно он сражался с ней в Министерстве магии. Это был его последний поединок, кузина Беллатриса с радостью убила его.

Единственные члены семьи, которых Сириус любил — это кузина Андромеда и дядя Альфард.

Гарри Поттер

Изначально Сириус чувствует вину перед Гарри за то, что не сумел спасти его родителей. Поэтому первым делом, сбежав из Азкабана, Блэк решил повидать юного Гарри и был поражён внешним сходством мальчика с Джеймсом. Иногда Сириус даже говорит: «Браво, Джеймс!», но это скорее из-за того, что полное имя Гарри — Гарри Джеймс Поттер. В свою очередь Гарри узнаёт сначала ту версию событий в Годриковой впадине, по которой в смерти его отца и матери обвиняется именно Блэк. Поэтому он люто ненавидит сбежавшего узника. При первой встрече Сириус никак не защищается от Гарри. Его цель — убить Петтигрю, за которым он так долго охотился и по вине которого на самом деле умерли Джеймс и Лили, а выпады Гарри он считает вполне заслуженными. Когда же всё выясняется, у Сириуса появляется робкая надежда наладить отношения с крестником. Каково же было его удивление, когда предложение пожить с ним Гарри радостно принимает.

Гарри становится для Сириуса самым главным человеком в жизни. Из-за внешнего сходства с Джеймсом Блэку иногда кажется, что его друг ожил.^[6] Он поддерживает любые начинания крестника, особенно — идею создания ОД. Правда, когда Гарри теряет осторожность, Сириус вспоминает свою роль старшего товарища и предупреждает об опасности. В стремлении защитить мальчика Блэк не останавливается перед трудностями и не задумывается о своей безопасности. В результате Гарри теряет того, кто заменил ему отца и старшего брата.^[7]

Насколько дорог крёстный для Гарри видно из того, что во время действия воскрешающего камня к Поттеру приходят тени отца, матери, Римуса Люпина и Сириуса. И своего сына-первенца взрослый Гарри называет в честь самых любимых людей — Джеймс Сириус.

Альбус Дамблдор

Сириус всегда уважал Дамблдора и полностью ему доверял. Когда-то давно директору стало известно, что пятикурсник Блэк подстроил встречу слизеринца Снегга с оборотнем^[8], и только по счастливой случайности дело не кончилось трагически. Тогда Дамблдор замял этот случай. Позже, когда Альбус Дамблдор создал Орден Феникса, он пригласил туда и Сириуса Блэка.

После побега из Азкабана отношения между Блэком и Дамблдором стали несколько натянутыми. Хотя Сириус понимал, что директор Хогвартса желает ему добра, он всё же постепенно накапливал раздражение, подчиняясь его требованиям, которые шли вразрез с натурой Сириуса. Блэк, вынужденный скрываться в родительском доме (который, кстати, не переваривает ещё с детства), ощущает себя как в тюрьме. Любые попытки активно поучаствовать в работе Ордена Феникса натыкаются на вежливые, но настойчивые увещевания Дамблдора не подвергать себя опасности. Он нарушает запрет Дамблдора и пробирается в образе пса проводить Гарри на поезд. Появление собаки на закрытой от маглов платформе 9¾ привлекло внимание министерских мракоборцев, что в свою очередь сделало невозможным дальнейшие вылазки Сириуса из дома на пл. Гриммо, 12. В следующий раз Блэк покидает убежище, узнав, что Гарри грозит опасность в Отделе тайн…

Также Сириус знает о том, что Дамблдора и Грин-де-Вальда некогда связывала дружба, ведь в августе 1981 года Лили Поттер пишет ему:

Возможно, Сириус не поверил этому, возможно — не запомнил, но факт передачи информации остается фактом.

Джеймс и Лили Поттер

Джеймс Поттер — лучший друг Сириуса. Именно он принял Сириуса в «мародёры». Они сдружились с первой поездки в Хогвартс, 1 сентября 1971 года. Тогда они ехали в одном купе и одинаково возненавидели Снегга.

К Лили Поттер Сириус относился так же, как и к Джеймсу.

Он был в ярости, когда Питер предал их, и готов был убить его.

Римус Люпин

Люпин был «мародёром» и другом Сириуса. Однако Римус был более осторожным и серьёзным, нежели Джеймс и Сириус. Римус, в отличие от своих друзей, никогда не участвовал в травле Северуса Снегга (и, вероятно, других студентов): из-за неизлечимой болезни он очень остро ощущал чужую боль. Но при этом Люпин никогда не останавливал товарищей в их «забавах»: слишком уж он дорожил их дружбой и боялся её потерять. Даже спустя годы Люпин сожалеет о том, что проявлял трусость и нерешительность. Возможно, в юные годы это стало причиной непонимания между ним и Сириусом. И, вероятно, это непонимание стало причиной того, что Сириус решил, что среди «мародёров» только Люпин способен стать предателем, а Люпин, напротив, поверил в виновность Сириуса. Но после побега Сириуса из Азкабана, они, скорее всего, смогли поговорить по душам и до конца понять друг друга. До самой смерти Сириуса у них сохраняются очень тёплые, дружеские отношения. Римус был сильно огорчён смертью друга, но, несмотря на собственную боль, смог удержать Гарри от побега в Арку Смерти.

Кикимер

Сириус испытывает к домашнему эльфу острую неприязнь, ведь он — часть нелюбимого отчего дома. Впрочем, Кикимер отвечает ему взаимностью. «Хозяин Сириус» всячески шпыняет и унижает домовика. Гермиона и Дамблдор уговаривают Сириуса относиться к Кикимеру помягче, но тот всё пропускает мимо ушей, что в итоге приводит к трагедии.

Перед Рождеством 1995 года Кикимер, воспользовавшись мимоходом брошенным Сириусом приказанием («Вон!»), покидает дом Блэков и отправляется к двоюродной сестре Сириуса Нарциссе Малфой. В доме Малфоев Кикимера принимают хорошо, а тот рассказывает там о Сириусе всё, что может и в дальнейшем продолжает поддерживать отношения с Малфоями. В конечном итоге, несколько месяцев спустя Волан-де-Морт использует домовика, чтобы заманить Гарри в Отдел тайн. Когда Орден спешит на выручку Гарри, Сириус настаивает, чтобы орденцы его взяли с собой. И в сражении в Комнате смерти он погибает.

Позже Гермиона, ярая защитница домашних эльфов, так выскажется по этому поводу: «Маги ещё поплатятся за своё отношение к домовикам,<…> Волан-де-Морт, вон, уже поплатился… Да и Сириус тоже».

Sirius Orion Black (born November 3, 1959) was an English Pureblood wizard and member of The Marauders, a group of mischievous Hogwarts students that dominated the Hogwarts social scene during the 1970’s. As an heir to the Black family with two unstable and possessive parents, Sirius was far-removed from having a good childhood. This influence made Sirius despise Purebloodism and his family in general, except for a select few such as his uncle Alphard and cousin Andromeda.

At seven years old, his parents would take him to a Black family ball. It was at this where he first met James Potter, a relative of a cousin of the main family and who would become his best friend.

James and Sirius would later befriend Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew, and the four friends would ‘terrorize’ Hogwarts for a generation, creating many impressive magical items and accomplishing feats of magic far beyond their peers’ capabilities. However, they could also pull cruel pranks, especially on Severus Snape. Several circumstances over the Marauders’ time at Hogwarts forced Sirius to become very dependent on his friends for support and to grow as a person, such as when his parents disowned him or when his brother Regulus became a Death Eater.

In the final years of their time at Hogwarts, Remus and Sirius would have a committed yet secret relationship facilitated and known by their two closest friends. The two would be separated during the war, and their relationship fizzled out after the events of October 31, 1981.

In the final hours of the war, James and Lily were betrayed by Peter Pettigrew, whom Sirius successfully located and attempted to kill. Pettigrew framed Sirius for espionage and for killing twelve Muggles, which landed Sirius squarely into Azkaban for, as of 1991, 10 years.

While in prison, Sirius would be in close contact with many ex-Death Eaters, including his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange. From his experiences, he had gained a more nuanced view of Death Eaters and Dark Magic.

Biography

At 11, Sirius would purchase a 13″ ebony and phoenix feather wand, unyielding from Ollivander’s wandshop.

Hogwarts (1971-1978)

Sirius Black was sorted into Gryffindor along with his childhood friend James Potter, as well as their new friends Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. All four were gifted wizards who either squandered their talents through pranks and hexing their classmates or utilized them for good or inventive purposes, such as creating the Marauder’s Map or becoming Animagi to be with Remus during his monthly transformations.

Sirius would slowly begin to antagonize his former childhood friends who had been sorted into Slytherin. When James began to bully Severus Snape, Severus became a favored target of Sirius as well. Sirius did not however bully his younger brother Regulus, and often held out hope that his brother would see reason and not join the Death Eaters.

Sirius would join the Gryffindor Quidditch team as a Beater in his second year. He later joined the Dueling Club alongside James, where he held the second-place position overall. Sirius alongside James would discover Remus was a werewolf early on in their times at Hogwarts, and would work with the other three Marauders to become Animagi to be with Remus during his transformations by their fourth year.

Sirius lashed out at the Marauders’ main rival, Severus Snape, in the worst way possible: Sirius let slip to him that they went to the Shrieking Shack in order that a transformed Lupin would turn Snape into a werewolf or otherwise severely injure him. A week before, James had humiliated Severus in front of Lily Evans that later caused Lily and Severus’ friendship to end permanently.

Disownment (1996)

In 5th year, Sirius would finally be disowned by his parents after he refused to join Lord Voldemort’s cause. Despite only being disowned by his immediate family, his other relatives such as Narcissa Malfoy or Arcturus his grandfather refused to see him. He still remained the heir to the Black family. Regulus, Sirius’ younger brother, did join the Death Eaters in his 5th year.

In his 6th year, Sirius began dating Remus Lupin in secret. The two had long been affectionate but had pursued other people. The two kept their relationship a secret except to their closest friends James, Lily, and Peter, neither wanting attention or hate directed towards them. As James had largely given up on antagonizing the Slytherins, so did Sirius.

The First Wizarding War (1978-1981)

Shortly after graduating, Sirius was approached by Albus Dumbledore to join the Order of the Phoenix, a secret cabal that aimed to destroy Lord Voldemort’s forces and ideals within Wizarding Britain. He accepted and fought and contributed his skills in enchanting to further Dumbledore’s goals.

During the war, Sirius would put himself at the front lines alongside his boyfriend Remus and his best friend Sirius. Remus would be hyper-focused on parleying with the werewolf groups in Britain and abroad while Peter performed stealth missions in his Animagus form. The five would meet in The Hogs’ Head monthly, but hardly saw each other. Remus and Sirius however met far more often than the others, Sirius’ flexible position allowing him to seek out Remus wherever he was.

Sirius’ brother Regulus died after apparently betraying Lord Voldemort within a year of the war’s beginning Sirius was distraught, immensely guilty that he had failed to save his brother. He poured all of his energy into creating an enchanted motorbike while he grieved for his brother.

Shortly after the birth of Harry Potter, James and Lily would retreat to Godric’s Hollow in a newly-purchased cottage, hidden from the Death Eaters and from the majority of the Order. Only four people knew of the family’s true location, as other false ones had been meted out: Albus Dumbledore (the leader as well as a very powerful Occlumens), Bathilda Bagshot (who was considered very trustworthy and inconspicuous), Peter Pettigrew (a trusted friend who was considered inconspicuous), and Sirius himself. Remus Lupin was not told due to his work amongst the werewolves; he had been away for nearly a year at that point.

October 31, 1981

The Potters however were betrayed. Sirius learned of this after attempting to get a hold of James through their two-way mirror. He used his motorbike to fly to Godric’s Hollow, where he encountered Albus Dumbledore and Rubeus Hagrid. The two told him the worst, and were highly suspicious of Sirius’ behavior, though of course Sirius was under a very horrible set of circumstances. He left his bike with Hagrid and set out to find Peter Pettigrew, the only logical person it could’ve been to have betrayed the Potters.

Eventually he did find Peter, though the rat quickly took advantage of Sirius’ state, blowing up the street and framing Sirius for his death and the death of twelve Muggles caught in the blast. Sirius’ mind truly broke then. He was given a show trial but was saved at the last minute by the efforts of his grandfather Arcturus, whose efforts were decried by progressive parties as the corruption inherent in the aristocratic system.

Exile (1981 — current)

Sirius was in effect exiled and a social pariah, traveling around Europe, picking up controversy wherever he went before going dark. It has been many years since he’s made contact with anyone in England.

Physical Appearance

Sirius was tall and broad, with pale skin and black hair that he often styled to his shoulders, as well as a mustache and beard combination after he left Hogwarts. He had the famous Black grey eyes as well.

Sirius wore casual Muggle clothing: tee-shirts, jeans, jumpers, trainers, leather jackets, beanies, all of it. He liked dark, simple fabrics and wore lots of black and maroon. He also bore many tattoos, most of them gotten during his 6th year on a bender. Some were in fact his tattoos from the Circe method of becoming an Animagus.

Personality

Over the course of his Hogwarts years, Sirius went from a reluctant Pureblood elitist to a full-fledged ideological crusader. All through this, he was a fanatically loyal friend to James Potter and Remus Lupin. Through James’ influence, he rejected most everything about his past in the most fabulous and radical way while at Hogwarts, making sure that none of it could be proven by his parents. While at home, he largely remained aloof.

Sirius was very antagonistic towards Slytherin House and dark magic in general. He delighted in being cruel towards them, with the ready excuse that they were going to be Death Eaters anyway. Years of emotional repression combined with a radically different House ideology led to Sirius becoming wholly chaotic and emotionally turbulent with an explosive temper to boot. He was vicious in the way his parents were to him to the Slytherins, most of the times unjustifiably so.

However his time in exile has given him much time for reflection and a resorting of his priorities. He became bitter and calculative instead of impulsive, vengeful instead of vindictive.

• Alphard’s donation: When Sirius was disowned in 1976, his Uncle Alphard gave him a small fortune in order to live from, unbeknownst to the rest of the family.
• Black Fortune: As the sole surviving male heir, the vast Black fortune stored in the high-security vaults of Gringotts is Sirius’. The hoard contains a slew of family wands.
• Black Manor: Black Manor on the coast of Kent is also Sirius’ as the last male Black heir. It contains many Dark artifacts and has been unreachable since Sirius’ grandfather Arcturus’ death in 1991.
• Chiswick Apartment: Sirius owns an apartment in Chiswick where he rendezvoused with Remus Lupin during the war. The rent is paid through Sirius’ inheritance from Alphard Black but has remained empty since October 31, 1981.
• Enchanted Penknife: Sirius invented a penknife that can go through any Muggle or common magical lock. His penknife is currently in his Chiswick apartment.
• Marauder’s Map (formerly): Sirius is one of the titular owners of the Marauder’s Map. He lost the map during his 6th year.
• Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place: The Black’s London residence, Sirius’ childhood home, is Sirius’. It has been abandoned since the death of Sirius’ mother Walburga.
• Sirius Black’s motorbike (formerly): Sirius enchanted a Muggle motorbike to give it flight capabilities. He loaned it to Rubeus Hagrid before being arrested. It is currently in Hagrid’s possession at his hut at Hogwarts.

Sirius had always had a strained relationship with his parents, particularly since Sirius didn’t take to instruction in the same way Regulus did. However over the course of Sirius’ childhood and adolescence, many things outside of Sirius’ control would contribute to his parents ultimately disowning him, such as Sirius being sorted into Gryffindor.

Sirius became radically and increasingly rebellious against his parents. Eventually he was thrown out of the house and disowned by his immediate family.

Regulus Black

Sirius and Regulus were fond of eachother as children, though Regulus was far more part of ‘the firm’ than Sirius was. Regulus often was in Sirius’ shadow, and thought that he would be a better heir to the family than Sirius was. Despite this, the two remained at the worst of times civil, but otherwise got along. That changed when Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor. Regulus disowned Sirius far sooner than his parents did.

On his part, Sirius never antagonized his brother though did plenty of damage to Regulus’ friends. Sirius remained nice to Regulus in the hopes that he could save him from his inevitable fate, despite his brother’s cold hostility. Sirius’ efforts were in vain, as Regulus joined the Death Eaters during Sirius’ sixth year.

He used his motorbike to fly to Godric’s Hollow, where he encountered Albus Dumbledore and Rubeus Hagrid. The two told him the worst, and were highly suspicious of Sirius’ behavior, though of course Sirius was under a very horrible set of circumstances. He left his bike with Hagrid and set out to find Peter Pettigrew, the only logical person it could’ve been to have betrayed the Potters.

Eventually he did find Peter, though the rat quickly took advantage of Sirius’ state, blowing up the street and framing Sirius for his death and the death of twelve Muggles caught in the blast. Sirius’ mind truly broke then. He was given a show trial but was saved at the last minute by the efforts of his grandfather Arcturus, whose efforts were decried by progressive parties as the corruption inherent in the aristocratic system.

Exile (1981 — current)

Sirius was in effect exiled and a social pariah, traveling around Europe, picking up controversy wherever he went before going dark. It has been many years since he’s made contact with anyone in England.

Physical Appearance

Sirius was tall and broad, with pale skin and black hair that he often styled to his shoulders, as well as a mustache and beard combination after he left Hogwarts. He had the famous Black grey eyes as well.

Sirius wore casual Muggle clothing: tee-shirts, jeans, jumpers, trainers, leather jackets, beanies, all of it. He liked dark, simple fabrics and wore lots of black and maroon. He also bore many tattoos, most of them gotten during his 6th year on a bender. Some were in fact his tattoos from the Circe method of becoming an Animagus.

Personality

Over the course of his Hogwarts years, Sirius went from a reluctant Pureblood elitist to a full-fledged ideological crusader. All through this, he was a fanatically loyal friend to James Potter and Remus Lupin. Through James’ influence, he rejected most everything about his past in the most fabulous and radical way while at Hogwarts, making sure that none of it could be proven by his parents. While at home, he largely remained aloof.

Sirius was very antagonistic towards Slytherin House and dark magic in general. He delighted in being cruel towards them, with the ready excuse that they were going to be Death Eaters anyway. Years of emotional repression combined with a radically different House ideology led to Sirius becoming wholly chaotic and emotionally turbulent with an explosive temper to boot. He was vicious in the way his parents were to him to the Slytherins, most of the times unjustifiably so.

However his time in exile has given him much time for reflection and a resorting of his priorities. He became bitter and calculative instead of impulsive, vengeful instead of vindictive.

• Alphard’s donation: When Sirius was disowned in 1976, his Uncle Alphard gave him a small fortune in order to live from, unbeknownst to the rest of the family.
• Black Fortune: As the sole surviving male heir, the vast Black fortune stored in the high-security vaults of Gringotts is Sirius’. The hoard contains a slew of family wands.
• Black Manor: Black Manor on the coast of Kent is also Sirius’ as the last male Black heir. It contains many Dark artifacts and has been unreachable since Sirius’ grandfather Arcturus’ death in 1991.
• Chiswick Apartment: Sirius owns an apartment in Chiswick where he rendezvoused with Remus Lupin during the war. The rent is paid through Sirius’ inheritance from Alphard Black but has remained empty since October 31, 1981.
• Enchanted Penknife: Sirius invented a penknife that can go through any Muggle or common magical lock. His penknife is currently in his Chiswick apartment.
• Marauder’s Map (formerly): Sirius is one of the titular owners of the Marauder’s Map. He lost the map during his 6th year.
• Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place: The Black’s London residence, Sirius’ childhood home, is Sirius’. It has been abandoned since the death of Sirius’ mother Walburga.
• Sirius Black’s motorbike (formerly): Sirius enchanted a Muggle motorbike to give it flight capabilities. He loaned it to Rubeus Hagrid before being arrested. It is currently in Hagrid’s possession at his hut at Hogwarts.
• Sirius Black’s first wand: Sirius’ wand was 13 inches, made of ebony and phoenix feather. His wand is currently in an evidence locker in the Ministry.
• Sirius Black’s second wand: Sirius’ second wand is 13 and a half inches, made of hornbeam and unicorn hair. It is a Gregorovitch creation.
• Two-way Mirror: Sirius crafted a pair of two-way mirrors, one of which he gave to James Potter. His mirror is currently in Sirius’ Chiswick apartment.

Relationships

Orion and Walburga Black

Sirius had always had a strained relationship with his parents, particularly since Sirius didn’t take to instruction in the same way Regulus did. However over the course of Sirius’ childhood and adolescence, many things outside of Sirius’ control would contribute to his parents ultimately disowning him, such as Sirius being sorted into Gryffindor.

Sirius became radically and increasingly rebellious against his parents. Eventually he was thrown out of the house and disowned by his immediate family.

Regulus Black

Sirius and Regulus were fond of eachother as children, though Regulus was far more part of ‘the firm’ than Sirius was. Regulus often was in Sirius’ shadow, and thought that he would be a better heir to the family than Sirius was. Despite this, the two remained at the worst of times civil, but otherwise got along. That changed when Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor. Regulus disowned Sirius far sooner than his parents did.

On his part, Sirius never antagonized his brother though did plenty of damage to Regulus’ friends. Sirius remained nice to Regulus in the hopes that he could save him from his inevitable fate, despite his brother’s cold hostility. Sirius’ efforts were in vain, as Regulus joined the Death Eaters during Sirius’ sixth year.
