Stray Kids (Korean: 스트레이 키즈; RR: Seuteurei Kijeu; often abbreviated as SKZ) is a South Korean boy band formed by JYP Entertainment through the 2017 reality show of the same name. The group is composed of eight members: Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. Originally a nine-piece group, member Woojin left due to undisclosed personal reasons in October 2019.

Stray Kids released their pre-debut extended play (EP) Mixtape in January 2018 and officially debuted on March 25 with the EP I Am Not, followed by other two I Am series EPs, I Am Who and I Am You. Their Clé trilogy EPs were issued in 2019, consisting of Clé 1: Miroh, Clé 2: Yellow Wood, and Clé: Levanter. The group’s first studio album Go Live was released in 2020, becoming their first platinum-certified album by Korea Music Content Association (KMCA). That year, Stray Kids also made their Japanese debut with the compilation album SKZ2020 through Epic Records Japan.

In 2021, Stray Kids’ second studio album Noeasy became their first million-selling album. After signing with Republic Records for promotions in the United States in 2022, the group released the EPs Oddinary and Maxident, which marked their first appearances atop the US Billboard 200 and on the UK Albums Chart. Maxident was certified triple-million in album sales by the KMCA, making them just the second group to achieve this in Korean history. As of October 2022, Stray Kids has sold over 10 million albums across both Korean and Japanese releases.[1]

Name

The group’s name «Stray Kids» was not defined by JYP Entertainment but conceptualized by the members themselves. It originally referred to a lost child who wants to chase their dreams and later evolved to represent the idea of finding a way together out of the ordinary.[2][3]

History

2017–2018: Formation, debut and I Am series

In August 2017, JYP Entertainment (JYPE) officially announced their new reality survival show with the goal of launching a male idol debut project. More details and teasers were released in the next two months, including the show’s title, Stray Kids.[4][5][6] Prior to its premiere on October 17, JYPE released Stray Kids’ first music video for a song titled «Hellevator», which was later released as a digital single. Two members, Lee Know and Felix, were initially eliminated from the group but returned to the final nine-member line-up.[7][8][9]

Along with the launch of Stray Kids’ official website, JYPE announced the release of the group’s pre-debut extended play (EP) titled Mixtape. It contains seven tracks co-written and co-composed by the members, including «Hellevator» and other songs that they performed on the show.[10] The EP, along with the performance video of its second track «Beware» (Korean: Grrr 총량의 법칙), was released on January 8, 2018, while the performance video of «Spread My Wings» (Korean: 어린 날개) was uploaded online a week later.[11][12][13] It debuted at number two on the Gaon Album Chart and Billboard World Albums chart.[14][15]

On March 25, the group held their debut showcase of the group, Stray Kids Unveil (Op. 01: I Am Not), at Jangchung Arena.[16][17] They officially debuted the next day with the release of their EP titled I Am Not, along with the music video of its title track «District 9», while the music video of «Grow Up» and performance video of «Mirror» were released on March 31 and April 23, respectively.[18][19][20][21] I Am Not debuted at number four on the Gaon Album Chart and sold over 54,000 physical copies in March.[22][23]

On April 14, Stray Kids performed at KCON Japan 2018, the group’s first overseas performance.[24][25] On July 12, JYPE announced the group’s second showcase, Stray Kids Unveil (Op. 02: I Am Who), for August 5 at Kyung Hee University’s Grand Peace Palace. Their second EP, I Am Who, was released the next day along with lead single «My Pace».[26][27][28] On October 4, JYPE announced the group’s third showcase, Stray Kids Unveil (Op. 03: I Am You), for October 21 at Olympic Hall. The performance was followed by the release of their new EP I Am You the day afterward.[29]

2019: Clé series and Woojin’s departure

Stray Kids began the year by bringing their showcase tour, the Unveil Tour «I Am…», to the Asia-Pacific, starting on January 19 in Bangkok.[30] The group also held their national promotional Hi Stay Tour in Busan, Daejeon and Incheon in March, as well as a finale in Seoul in Olympic Park on April 20.[31] On March 5, JYPE announced Stray Kids would make their third comeback on March 25, 2019, with the release of their fourth EP Clé 1: Miroh in commemoration of the first anniversary of the group’s debut.[32] The group earned their first music show win on April 4 on M Countdown for the album’s lead single, «Miroh.»[33] On June 19, they released their first special album Clé 2: Yellow Wood, along with lead single «Side Effects» (Korean: 부작용), between the American and European legs of their first world tour.[34]

Stray Kids released a digital single titled «Double Knot» on October 9 and announced their District 9 Unlock World Tour, beginning with shows at Olympic Hall in Seoul, South Korea from November 23–24. Their fifth EP Clé: Levanter was initially scheduled for a November 25 release; however, on October 28, JYPE announced that Woojin had left the group due to personal circumstances, and the release date would therefore be postponed.[35] On November 13, the group released the music video for «Astronaut,» their first single as an eight-member group,[36] followed by Cle: Levanter on December 9. Stray Kids held the Japanese shows for the Hi Stay Tour on December 19 at Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Tokyo with an audience of 8,000 people.[37] The group released the digital single «Mixtape: Gone Days», the first single of their Mixtape Project, on December 26.[38]

Stray Kids released the first English versions of «Double Knot» and «Levanter» as digital singles together titled Step Out of Clé, along with a performance video of the English version of «Double Knot» on January 24.[39] They officially debuted in Japan on March 18 with compilation album SKZ2020, which contained new recordings of previous songs and included Japanese versions of «My Pace», «Double Knot» and «Levanter», through Epic Records Japan.[40] The group released the second Mixtape Project digital single «Mixtape: On Track» on March 26.[41] On June 3, Stray Kids released their first Japanese single, «Top», and its B-side «Slump». The former was used as the theme song for the anime Tower of God, and the latter as it’s ending theme;[42] a Korean version was released on May 13,[43] and an English version on May 20.[44][45] The single debuted atop Oricon Singles Chart, making them the fourth foreign male artist in history to debut at number one on the chart with their first single, after Jang Keun-suk, Exo, and iKon.[46]

On June 17, Stray Kids released their first studio album Go Live alongside lead single «God’s Menu»,[47] including on the tracklist the Korean versions of «Top» and «Slump» and previously released singles “Gone Days» and «On Track». Go Live became the group’s best-selling album at the time, debuting atop the weekly Gaon Album Chart and selling 243,462 copies by the end of the month to reach number five on the monthly Gaon Album Chart.[48] The album was certified platinum by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) in August 2020, the group’s first album to achieve this.[49] «God’s Menu» became the group’s first single to appear on the weekly Gaon Download Chart, debuting at number 144.[50] Three months later, the group reissued their first studio album as In Life on September 14.[51] During promotions, the group received two music show wins: once on MBC M’s Show Champion and once on Mnet’s M Countdown.[52][53] Lead single «Back Door» was recognized by Time magazine at eighth on its list of the 10 Best Songs of 2020, the only song by a Korean act on the list, and described as «an artful Frankenstein that’s as catchy as it is complex».[54]

On November 4, Stray Kids released their first Japanese EP, All In, with title track «All In» serving as lead single. The EP also included Japanese versions of «God’s Menu» and «Back Door», as well as their first Japanese single «Top».[55] On November 22, the group held their first online concert, titled «Unlock: Go Live In Life», via Beyond Live, which was considered a continuation of their «District 9: Unlock» Tour that faced postponement and cancellation due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. During the concert, the group performed the Korean version of their song «All In» for the first time, which was eventually released on November 26 as a digital single.[56][57]

2021: Kingdom: Legendary War and Noeasy

At the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards, it was announced that Stray Kids would be joining Ateez and The Boyz on the inaugural season of Kingdom: Legendary War, a Mnet boy group competition show;[58] BtoB, iKon and SF9 were later confirmed as participants as well.[59] On May 28, 2021, the group released a song for the final round of the competition titled «Wolfgang», which marked the group’s first appearance on the main Gaon Digital Chart, at number 138.[60] They won the program on June 3, earning them their own reality show and a Kingdom Week special show for their comeback.[61]

Stray Kids held their first official fan meeting, Stray Kids 1st #LoveStay ‘SKZ-X’ on February 20, 2021, via V Live[62] and their first Japanese fan meeting—STAYing Home Meeting—for the first anniversary of their Japanese debut on March 18.[63] The group collaborated with Swedish producer Alesso and Chinese DJ Corsak on the Korean version of the song «Going Dumb» for the mobile game version of PUBG, released on March 19.[64] The song debuted at number 13 on Billboard‘s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, the group’s first appearance on the chart.[65]

The group released their second Japanese single «Scars»/»Thunderous (Japanese ver.)» on October 13.[78] The single entered at number two on both Oricon Singles Chart[79] and Billboard Japan Hot 100, selling over 180,000 CD copies.[80] A Christmas-themed «special holiday» single album titled Christmas EveL was released on November 29, featuring both the title track and «Winter Falls» as lead singles.[81] It peaked atop Gaon Album Chart,[82] selling over 743,000 copies in 2021 alone,[83] and was certified double platinum by KMCA.[84] The group concluded the year with the digital release of SKZ2021, a compilation album including re-recorded versions of previous songs and the Korean version of «Scars», on December 23.[85]

The latter made them the third Korean act in history to top the chart, after BTS and SuperM.[96] Its lead single «Maniac[97] became the group’s first song to chart the UK Singles Chart at number 98,[98] and the Bubbling Under Hot 100 at number 19, among others.[99]

Stray Kids «Double Knot» M V

Stray Kids (KR: 스트레이 키즈; JP: ストレイキッズ) is an eight-member boy group under JYP Entertainment. Formed through the competition reality show of the same name. Originally as nine, they debuted on March 25, 2018 with the mini album I Am Not.

Prior to their debut, they released a mini album, Mixtape, on January 8, 2018.

History[]

Pre-debut: Stray Kids and Mixtape[]

The sub-unit 3RACHA, composed of Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han, existed prior to Stray Kids. While the nine were still trainees, Bang Chan picked each member of the group himself. They then participated in Mnet’s reality show Stray Kids (named after the group), in which they had various challenges to accomplish together in order to prove to JYP that they deserved to debut as nine, which was their wish. «Part of what sets Stray Kids apart is their heightened emphasis on self-composition[1]«, and the challenges in the show reflected this, like when they had to create their own songs and choreographies. They released a digital single titled «Hellevator» during the show on November 7, 2017. Though two members — Lee Know and Felix — were eliminated on the show, they were eventually given a second chance. It was announced in the last episode that the group would debut as nine.

Stray Kids released the pre-debut album Mixtape on January 8, 2018. All the songs featured on it were initially created during the reality show.

2018: Debut with I Am Not, followed by mini-albums I Am Who and I Am You[]

Stray Kids debuted on March 25, 2018 with I Am Not and its title track «District 9». The group announced its fandom name, STAY, on August 1.[2] This was a few days before their first comeback on August 6 with the title track «My Pace» and the mini album I Am Who. Finally, they released I Am You on October 22. The three mini albums, the I Am series, were all released in less than a year and are all part of the same narrative cycle revolving around the theme of identity and self-discovery.[1]

2019: ‘Clé’ trilogy, Woojin’s departure and «Mixtape : Gone Days»[]

Clé 1 : Miroh was released on the first anniversary of the group’s debut, March 25, 2019. «MIROH» is a word Stray Kids created; ‘miro’ means ‘maze’ in Korean, and the H at the end of MIROH symbolizes either heaven or hell, meaning there are two possible places it can lead to. The album tackles the subject of surviving in a new world that might be harsh — in Stray Kids’ case, this new world is both celebrity and adulthood.[3] It’s with the title track of that album, «Miroh», that the group received their first ever music show win, on April 4. [4]

They came back on June 19 with Clé 2 : Yellow Wood. The «Clé» and «I Am» series were then connected. For example, the city Stray Kids is looking at at the end of the music video for «I Am You» is MIROH, and the roof of Clé 2: Yellow Wood was where the music video «MIROH» has finished.

On October 27, it was announced by JYP that Woojin had left the group and agency due to personal circumstances. As a result of that, the mini album Clé : Levanter, which was scheduled to be released on November 25, was delayed to be released on December 9.[5] The album included the two pre-released tracks «Double Knot» and «Astronaut«, and also the title track «Levanter».

Stray Kids released «Mixtape : Gone Days» less than twenty days later, on December 26. The song is about the conflict between the new generation, who wants to do things their way and be able to gain maturity on their own, and the older generations, who nags and pushes to do things like it was done in the past. The title is also a play on words, as it sounds like the Korean word «ggondae», a term for old, nosy and bossy people.[6]

2020: «Step Out of Clé», Japanese debut, «Mixtape : On Track», Go Live, In Life, All In[]

On January 14, Stray Kids announced their first English release titled «Step Out of Clé» to be released on the 24th. It contains English versions of the tracks «Double Knot» and «Levanter».[7]

On January 16, it was announced the group would be making their Japanese debut on March 18 with the release of the best album SKZ2020.[8]

On March 13, a poster for the group’s upcoming release was posted on their Twitter account. On March 19, the members’ teaser photos were also posted, announcing their new digital single, «Mixtape : On Track«, to be released on the 25th.[9]

The digital single «Top«, consisting of the Korean versions of the opening and ending songs of the anime Tower of God, was released on May 13. The English version of the single was released on May 20, and the Japanese version on June 3.

On May 26, the first trailer for Go Live, the group’s first full album, was released. The album was released on June 17 with title track «God’s Menu». The album’s repackage, In Life, was released on September 14.

Stray Kids released their first Japanese mini album, All In, on November 4. A Korean version of the album’s title track was released on November 26.

The group held an online concert, Unlock : Go Live In Life, on November 22. During the show, which was two hours long, Stray Kids showcased a variety of powerful performances, accompanied with technological visual effects, for a total of 22 songs.[10]

2021: Hyunjin’s hiatus[]

JYP has announced that group member Hyunjin will go on hiatus from all activities and promotions for an undefined amount of time due to school bullying scandals. The group will promote with seven members for the time being. JYP Entertainment Announces Stray Kids’ Hyunjin Will Halt All Activities. In the meantime, Lee Know or I.N will take on the role of Stray Kids’s main vocalist until Woojin’s departs.

Stray Kids,

Mixtape

Billboard World Albums.[12][13]

5 марта был анонсирован дебютный шоукейс группы «Stray Kids Unveil (Op. 01: I Am Not)», который был проведен 25 марта.[14][15] На следующий день состоялся их официальный дебют с мини-альбомом I Am Not, вместе с клипом к титульному треку «District 9», а клип к «Grow Up» и видео выступления с «Mirror» вышли 31 марта и 23 апреля соответственно.[16][17][18][19] I Am Not дебютировал на четвертой строчке альбомного чарта Gaon, а всего в марте было продано 54,000 копий физического альбома.[20][21] 14 апреля Stray Kids выступили KCON Japan 2018, что отметило первое выступление группы за границей.[22][23]

12 июля JYP анонсировали второй шоукейс «Stray Kids Unveil (Op. 02: I Am Who)», который был проведен 5 августа. Второй мини-альбом I Am Who вместе с титульным треком «My Pace» вышел на следующий день.[24][25][26] 4 октября был анонсирован третий шоукейс «Stray Kids Unveil (Op. 03: I Am You)», прошедший 21 октября, за чем последовал релиз третьего мини-альбом I Am You.[27]

2019: Clé 1: Miroh и Clé 2: Yellow Wood, «Double Knot», уход Уджина, «Astronaut» и Clé: Levanter

2020: Японский дебют, «Step Out of Clé», «Mixtape: On Track», Go Live и In Life

Переиздание Go Live под названием In Life вышло 14 сентября.[34]

Stray Kids выпустили свой первый японский мини-альбом All In 4 ноября. Unlock : Go Live In Life.

Circus, Time Out», Maxident

Mixtape : Time Out».

SKZ-Replay.[59]

2023: The Sound

Introduction

Stray Kids (KR: 스트레이 키즈; JP: ストレイキッズ) is an eight-member boy group under JYP Entertainment. They were formed through the competition reality show of the same name and debuted on March 25, 2018 with the mini album ‘I Am Not.’

Prior to their debut, they released a mini album, Mixtape, on January 8, 2018.

Stray Kids debuted on March 25, 2018 with I Am Not and its title track «District 9». The group announced its fandom name, STAY, on August 1st. That was a few days before their first comeback on August 6 with the title track «My Pace» and the mini album I Am Who. Finally, they released I Am You on October 22. The three mini albums, the I Am series, were all released in less than a year and are all part of the same narrative cycle revolving around the theme of identity and self-discovery.

On October 28, 2019 JYPE announced that Woojin had left the group due to personal circumstances. On November 13, the group released the music video for «Astronaut,» their first single as an eight-member group.

At the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards, it was announced that Stray Kids would be participating in the Mnet survival show Kingdom: Legendary War. On May 28, 2021, the group released a song for the final round of the competition titled «Wolfgang», which marked the group’s first appearance on the main Gaon Digital Chart at number 138. They won the program on June 3, earning them their own reality show and a Kingdom Week special show for their comeback.

On February 10, 2022, it was announced that Stray Kids signed with Republic Records for promotions in the United States as part of JYP Entertainment’s strategic partnership with the label.
