Wednesday Addams is a fictional character from the Addams Family multimedia franchise created by American cartoonist Charles Addams. She is typically portrayed as a morbid and emotionally reserved child that is fascinated by the macabre, often identified by her pale skin and black pigtails.

Wednesday has been portrayed by several actresses in various films and television series, including Lisa Loring in the television series The Addams Family (1964–1966) and in the television film Halloween with the New Addams Family (1977); Christina Ricci in the feature films The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993); Nicole Fugere in the direct-to-video film Addams Family Reunion (1998) and in the television series The New Addams Family (1998–1999); and Jenna Ortega in the streaming television series Wednesday (2022).

Origin[edit]

Addams Family members were unnamed in The New Yorker cartoons that first appeared in 1938. The character that would later be known as Wednesday Addams first appeared in the August 26th, 1944 issue of The New Yorker in an illustration captioned, «Well, don’t come whining to me. Go tell him you’ll poison him right back.» When the characters were adapted for the 1964 television series, Charles Addams named Wednesday based on the Monday’s Child nursery rhyme line: «Wednesday’s child is full of woe». Actress and poet Joan Blake, an acquaintance of Charles Addams, offered the idea for the name.^[1] Wednesday is the only daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams and the sister of Pugsley Addams. Earlier adaptations depict her as the younger sibling, while later adaptations depict Wednesday as the elder Addams child.

Appearance and personality[edit]

Wednesday Addams is a typically young girl (in the original series, she is about six, in the two original movies and animated movies, she is 13, in the Netflix series, she is 15 and 16, and is 18 in the Addams Family musical) who is obsessed with death and is described as very brilliant, with a penchant for doing odd scientific experiments. Wednesday does most of her experiments on her brother Pugsley Addams for «fun» or for punishment. Wednesday has been shown to care for Pugsley, but is often hostile towards him, and has tried to kill Pugsley many times. She enjoys raising spiders and researching the Bermuda Triangle. She has a tendency to startle people due to her gothic personality.

Wednesday’s most notable features are her pale skin and long, dark braided pigtails. She seldom shows her emotions and is generally bitter, often sporting a stare forward with blank, emotionless eyes, and seldom changes her expression. Wednesday usually wears a black dress with a white collar, black stockings, and black shoes. In the TV series, her middle name is «Friday»,^[2] and in the Netflix series, she retains this middle name, because she was born on Friday the 13th.

In the 1960s series, she is sweet-natured and serves as a foil to the weirdness of her parents and brother; although her favorite hobby is raising spiders, she is also a ballerina. She is stated to be six years old in the television series pilot episode. Wednesday’s favorite toy is her Marie Antoinette doll, which her brother guillotines (at her request). She also paints pictures (including a picture of trees with human heads) and writes a poem dedicated to her favorite pet spider, Homer. Wednesday is deceptively strong; she is able to bring her father down with a judo hold. Although she is obsessed with death, the macabre, and enjoys being miserable, she is also good-natured, smiles and dances often, and with a slight distaste for torture.

In the 1991 film, she is depicted in a darker fashion. She shows sadistic tendencies and a dark personality and is revealed to have a deep interest in the Bermuda Triangle (which has remained an integral part of her interests throughout the adaptations) and an admiration for an ancestor (Great Aunt Calpurnia Addams) who was burned as a witch in 1706. In the 1993 sequel, she was even darker: she buried a live cat, tried to guillotine her baby brother Pubert, set fire to Camp Chippewa, and (possibly) scared fellow camper Joel to death.

In the animated series and Canadian TV series The New Addams Family from the 1990s, Wednesday retains her appearance and her taste for darkness and torture; she is portrayed as having her parents’ consent to tie Pugsley to a chair and torture him with a branding iron and ice pick. In the 1990s animated series, no one is allowed to touch Wednesday’s pigtails.

In The Addams Family Broadway musical, Wednesday is 18 years old and has short hair rather than the long braids in her other appearances. Her darkness and sociopathic traits have been toned down, and she is in love with (and revealed to be engaged to) Lucas Beineke. In the musical, Wednesday is older than Pugsley.

In the parody web series Adult Wednesday Addams, Wednesday recovers her dark, sociopathic and sadistic nature (although as in the originals any actual horrific acts are only implied and may or may not occur off-camera) and her long braids, connecting with the events and the depiction of the movies and the original cartoons. This Wednesday deals with being an adult after moving out of her family home.^[3]

In the 2019 animated version of the same title, Wednesday retains her emotionless nature and sadistic tendencies, trying to bury Pugsley and tormenting a bully at school. However, despite her gothic strangeness, she’s also bored with her macabre and sheltered life, wanting to see the world despite Morticia’s objections. This leads to her befriending Parker Needler and the two taking on several of each other’s traits, with Wednesday at one point wearing colorful clothes, though ultimately deciding she likes dressing in darker colors more; in the 2021 sequel, she is revealed to love science experiments as well. She also often feels disconnected from the rest of her family for her differences, later realizing that being different is «the most Addams-y thing to be» and growing to love her differences, and has a pet squid named Socrates. Her braided pigtails end in nooses in the first film, and weights in the second.

In the Netflix series Wednesday, Wednesday is the titular character and is interested in being a detective. She has an interest in writing novels, specifically gothic mysteries. She tries to publish her works, but they are seen as far too shocking and macabre to publish. Other than writing, some of Wednesday’s other hobbies are cello playing and fencing. She also knows German and Latin. It’s mentioned that Wednesday’s allergic to any color other than black, white, or grey. She retains her mostly emotionless nature, but opens up during the course of the series: having a best friend, the colorful werewolf Enid; having a love interest; showing her care for her brother more explicitly. Wednesday in the series has psychic abilities, she can see important things of a person’s past or future through touch. Because of her abilities, Wednesday is a «Raven» as her visions typically are negative, which causes her to estrange herself from the others, thinking she cannot trust them, though she learns to trust over the course of the series. Her mother, who has similar abilities, tells Wednesday that their psychic visions are based on their own attitude, and calls herself a «Dove» as her visions are usually positive, compared to Wednesday’s visions.

Wednesday is played by Lisa Loring in the original TV series, though far less malevolent than described by the cartoons. In the first animated series from Hanna-Barbera, her voice was provided by Cindy Henderson. Henderson voiced that same character in an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies. In the second animated series from Hanna-Barbera, she is voiced by Debi Derryberry.

In the 1977 television holiday-themed special, Halloween with the New Addams Family, Lisa Loring plays a grown-up Wednesday, who mostly entertains their party guests with her flute, and can hear and understand coded help messages by bound-up members of the family, and dispatch help to free them. In the time interval between the original TV series and this television movie, her parents had two more children who look just like the original Pugsley and Wednesday, and they appropriately are called Wednesday Jr and Pugsley Jr, respectively.

The Addams Family (1991) and its sequel Addams Family Values (1993)^[5] portray Wednesday more comic-accurately, maybe even darker. In both films, she is played by Christina Ricci. Wednesday’s personality is severe, with a deadpan wit and a morbid interest in trying to inflict harm upon her brothers, first Pugsley and later Pubert. In the film Addams Family Values (1993), Wednesday and Pugsley are sent to a summer camp for «privileged young adults» called Camp Chippewa, where Joel Glicker (played by David Krumholtz)—a neurotic, allergy-ridden wallflower camper with an overbearing mother—takes a liking to Wednesday. She refuses to participate in Gary Granger’s play, a musical production of the first Thanksgiving. She, Pugsley, and Joel are locked in the «Harmony Hut» and forced to watch upbeat family films to curb their antisocial behavior. On emerging from the hut, Wednesday feigns perkiness and agrees to play the role of Pocahontas, though her smile ends up scaring the campers, as well as her blonde nemesis.^[6] During the play, she leads the other social outcasts—who have all been cast as Native Americans—in a revolt, capturing Gary, Becky, and Amanda and leaving the camp in chaos with Pugsley and Joel. Before she leaves, Wednesday and Joel kiss. At the end of the film, however, it is suggested that Wednesday, though she obviously likes Joel, purposely tries to scare him to death after he brings up the subject of marriage.

Wednesday is portrayed by Nicole Fugere in the straight-to-video movie Addams Family Reunion and Fox Family Channel’s television series The New Addams Family, which were both produced in 1998.

Zoe Richardson appeared at the Birmingham Hippodrome as Wednesday Addams in a Musical adaptation of The Addams Family on Ice in November 2007.

The Addams Family musical debuted on Broadway in April 2010, with Krysta Rodriguez playing Wednesday. The character is now 18 years old, has «become a woman», and no longer sports her signature pigtails. In March 2011, Krysta Rodriguez was replaced with Rachel Potter as Wednesday in the Broadway cast. The production began its first national tour in September 2011, with Cortney Wolfson cast in the role of Wednesday Addams.

The web series Adult Wednesday Addams (2013–2015) gained media attention with the third episode of Season 2 in which Wednesday punished a pair of catcallers.^[7] While this behavior gained attention from early fans, The Tee & Charles Addams Foundation, copyright owners of The Addams Family, flagged the series for copyright violation resulting in the series being temporarily pulled from YouTube,^[8] however as of 2016 the series has been reinstated.

Chloë Grace Moretz voices Wednesday in the 2019 animated movie and in the sequel, which was released on October 1, 2021. The whole family is mostly designed to resemble the initial cartoon depictions, with added details; for instance, Wednesday’s hair braids end in nooses in the first film, and weights in the second.

Jenna Ortega portrays Wednesday in the 2022 Netflix series of the same name. Ortega’s performance in the series received acclaim from critics;^[9][10] she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy.^[11] The series was renewed for a second season.

In the TV series, her middle name is «Friday». In the Spanish-language version, her name is Miércoles Addams (Spain [Wednesday in Spanish]) or Merlina Addams (Latin America). In the Brazilian version, her name is Wandinha (Little Wanda in Portuguese), and in Italy, her name is Mercoledì (Wednesday in Italian).

She is the sister of Pugsley, Pugsley Jr., Wednesday Jr., and Pubert, and the oldest daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams. Wednesday has a close kinship with the family’s giant butler, Lurch.

In the original Addams Family cartoons illustrated by Charles, Wednesday is a pale, dark-haired, grim-looking little girl who is fascinated with death and the macabre. She rarely smiles.

The Addams Family (1964-1966)

In the original sitcom, Wednesday tends to be a lot happier than in the New Yorker cartoons; she is significantly more sweet-natured, although her favorite hobby is raising spiders. She is also a ballerina. Wednesday’s favorite toy is her Marie Antoinette doll, which her brother guillotined (at her request). She is stated to be six years old in the television series’ pilot episode. She also paints pictures, including one of trees with human heads, and writes a poem dedicated to her favorite pet spider, Homer. Wednesday is deceptively strong; she can bring her father down with a judo hold.

She dislikes school, especially the stories they read to them where they slay dragons.

The New Scooby-Doo Movies

Wednesday appears in the crossover with Scooby-Doo in an episode titled «Wednesday Is Missing.» Wednesday first appears playing with a voodoo doll and is upset when the pins prick her. She is very polite to the new housekeepers, Mystery Inc., and gets the table to settle down after it rises. She later goes missing, and Mystery Inc. spends most of the episode trying to locate her.

She was unaware that she was being searched for, as she simply stayed in the tower where she was placed and played with her spider, Homer, who «makes a groovy yoyo.»

In the 1991 film, she is closer to the original cartoons. She shows sadistic tendencies and a dark personality, has a deep interest in the Bermuda Triangle, and has an admiration for her great-aunt Calpurnia Addams, who was burned as a witch in 1706.

Wednesday plays with her brother Pugsley by shooting an apple in his mouth before the two of them head off to school. The two of them also play outside with an antenna during a thunderstorm before they’re called inside for the séance.

Wednesday greets Tully and Margaret Alford at the door as they arrive for the séance, helping Margaret get the fingertrap off. She speaks during the seance, calling for the ancestors to help them find Fester, who soon appears.

Wednesday is suspicious of Fester and Dr. Pinder-Schloss, as they claim Fester was in the Bermuda Triangle, and, according to Wednesday, «Nobody gets out of the Bermuda Triangle.» She keeps an eye on Fester when he tries to escape his room later that night.

She maintains her suspicions, talking about them with Pugsley as she attempts to electrocute him during their game «Is There a God?» However, she becomes more trusting of him when he helps them with their Shakespeare performance at school, helping Pugsley choreograph his stabs and giving them bloody fake limbs to wear.

When Fester says he has to leave, the Addamses throw him a party with all their relatives. Morticia sends Wednesday upstairs to fetch Fester, but she overhears him talking with Pinder-Schloss, who is money. She flees from them and hides in the mausoleum, where she falls asleep until Gomez finds her. She tells them that Fester is a fake, but they’re too late, as Fester has locked them out of the house.

The family has to live in a motel, where Wednesday and Pugsley try to raise money by selling lemonade, but Wednesday scares away a Girl Scout customer.

Later, when Craven and Tully are thrown from the house, they land in graves dug by the Addams’ children, who bury them.

The next Halloween, Wednesday, she comes downstairs to greet Cousin Itt and Margaret, who ask her where her costume is as she appears not to have one. She responds, «This is my costume. I’m a homicidal maniac. They look just like everyone else.» She later wants Fester to be on her team for «Wake the Dead.»

The Addams Family (1992-1993)

In the animated series from the 1990s, Wednesday retains her appearance and her taste for darkness and torture.

Addams Family Values (1993)

In the 1993 sequel, she was even darker as she tried to kill her younger brother Pubert and burned down Camp Chippewa.

Wednesday, Pugsley and Grandmama bury a live cat outside. They later go to the hospital when Morticia goes into labor, where Wednesday tells a little girl that her parents had sex and argues with Pugsley over the baby’s gender.

However, after the baby’s birth, Wednesday informs Pugsley that once a new baby is born, one of the other children has to die, and she and Pugsley try to drop their new brother Pubert off the roof. Their parents assure them that they won’t be killed, but the two siblings continue to try and kill Pubert in several different ways.

Since this is starting to stress Morticia, their parents try to hire a nanny, but Wednesday continues to scare them off. Finally, Debbie Jellinsky is hired, since she seems to get along well with the family. However, Wednesday grows suspicious that Debbie may not be what she seems, so Debbie convinces Gomez and Morticia to send the two children to Camp Chippewa. Once there, Wednesday makes quick enemies with the popular girl, Amanda Buckman, but also becomes allies with a boy named Joel Glicker. The camp counselors, Becky and Gary, favor the popular campers and are very unfair to the outcast campers, of which Wednesday becomes the ringleader.

While at camp, Wednesday finds out that Fester and Debbie are getting married, and her refusal to hug the other campers gets her and Pugsley sent to the Harmony Hut, after which she and Pugsley try to escape, aided by Joel, but are caught and subjected to the campers singing Kumbaya. Wednesday and Joel become closer, and she invites him to the wedding since she has a free pass to go. After she returns to camp, she receives a letter from Fester that says he never wants to see them again, to which she concludes that «he’s a dead man.»

She, Joel, and Pugsley hide under the bleachers during a camp announcement to look at Joel’s Serial Killer Trading Cards, where he finds the Black Widow, which they suspect is Debbie. Wednesday then discovers that she’s been selected to play Pocahontas in the camp pageant, «A Turkey Named Brotherhood,» to her horror.

She, Joel, and Pugsley sneak away to try and call the FBI, only to be caught and dragged back since they missed their costume fitting. Wednesday states that she doesn’t want to be in the pageant, as she thinks it’s «puerile and under-dramatized.» Becky and Gary then decide to brainwash the three by showing them happy movies, like «The Little Mermaid» and «The Brady Bunch.» It appears to have worked, as Wednesday says she wants to be perky and even smile.

During the play, Wednesday arrives as Pocahontas and tells Sara Miller (who is played by Amanda) that they brought a gift- a turkey- and compliments her beauty. However, she then stops the play, describing to the Pilgrims all the horrors that will be inflicted on the Natives, before announcing that she will scalp the pilgrims «and burn [their] village to the ground.» The Misfit Campers (who are all playing Indians) then revolt, burning down the camp, putting Becky and Gary on a spit, and tying Amanda to a stake, before Wednesday approaches and lights a match, intent on burning her alive.

Later, she escapes over the camp fence, sharing a kiss with Joel before driving away with Pugsley. They arrive at the house and are reunited with their family before Debbie arrives and ties the family to electric chairs, monologuing her backstory to them before trying to kill them. Sometime later, at Pubert’s birthday party, Joel and Wednesday walk outside in the garden. Joel asks her if she would ever want to get married or have kids, to which she replies that she doesn’t and that she would pity any man who would want to «be [her] devoted slave.» Joel says Debbie was sad, to which she replies, «She was sloppy. If I wanted to kill my husband, I’d do it. And I wouldn’t get caught […] I’d scare him to death.» A hand then shoots out of Debbie’s grave and grabs Joel, as Wednesday smiles.

The Addams Family: A New Musical

In the Broadway musical, Wednesday is eighteen years old and has short hair rather than long braids. She is in love with and engaged to Lucas Beineke. Under protest from her family members, she has invited Lucas and his parents, Mal and Alice, to dinner. While torturing Pugsley on a rack, Wednesday admits that love is pulling her in a new direction («Pulled»).

As the Beinekes arrive, Wednesday and Lucas instruct their families to act normally so they can all enjoy a simple dinner («One Normal Night»). Wednesday, for the first time after wearing black for eighteen years, she appears in a bright yellow dress. Away from the families of Lucas and Wednesday, they reveal that the reason they brought their families together was to announce that she and Lucas were getting married.

Later, in a mix-up, Alice drinks Pugsley’s potion of Acremonium and, in front of everyone, says that her marriage with Mal is a loveless mess («Waiting»). Mal, humiliated by the outburst, attempts to leave with his family, which causes Wednesday to announce they’re here and Lucas’ engagement. Which causes tension between the two families.

During a storm, Wednesday tries to leave with Lucas, but he wants to stay and work things out with their families, leading the pair to start their first fight. Later, she runs into Gomez. He says that he is happy that she’s found someone to love, yet sad that his daughter is growing up («Happy/Sad»). Wednesday is then left worrying that she and Lucas are too different. Then, as a show of trust, Lucas blindfolds Wednesday and lets her shoot an apple off his head with a crossbow («Crazier Than You»). She succeeds, and the two embrace.

With all the couples reunited, Pugsley admits to slipping the potion to Alice but is congratulated since it brought everyone together. Uncle Fester, wearing a rocket, tells everyone he’s flying off to be with the moon. As the families sing one last ballad, they are all shocked as Lurch sings out loud for the first time, just as a puff of smoke is seen on the moon, signaling Fester has just landed («Move Toward the Darkness»).

The Addams Family (2019)

In this film, Wednesday offers to help Pugsley prepare for his Mazurka, but she just wants to bury him alive. She then spots the balloon coming down, along with the confetti from Margaux’s taping. When Margaux decides to visit The Addams’ Mansion, Parker comes with her mother and eventually ends up meeting Wednesday, who is firing her crossbow at Fester. Both Wednesday and Parker confessed to each other that they are bored with their lives, at least until Parker mentions her school to Wednesday, who takes an interest in seeing this part of town. Wednesday asks her parents if it is okay for her to go to school with Parker. Morticia is reluctant, but Gomez thinks it’s a good idea. When she gets there, she finds Parker with her only other friends, twins Layla and Kayla.

When she sees Parker being picked on by mean girl Bethany, who stuffs a moldy sandwich and some kid’s soda in her backpack, Wednesday then manages to intimidate Bethany with a threat. In class, the students are set to dissect frogs. Wednesday instead builds a contraption that brings all the frogs to life like zombies, and they proceed to attack Bethany and cause all the kids and teachers, except for Parker, Layla, and Kayla, to run out. Parker thinks Wednesday is awesome for this, and the two become friends. Wednesday eventually goes to Parker’s house, where they both lament about how their mothers want them to be the way they are and not how they choose to define themselves. Parker then dyes her hair black and adopts a goth look, while Wednesday wears bright colors.

Following an argument with Morticia, Wednesday confides in Pugsley that she is running away. However, Pugsley blabs to his mom about where his sister went anyway. Wednesday goes to Parker’s house, where Parker is looking for her phone. Wednesday suggests it’s in Margaux’s crafting room, which Parker says they are not allowed in. They go in anyway and discover a room with cameras, as Margaux has hidden cameras in all the homes in Assimilation. Margaux finds the girls there and locks them in the attic, but Wednesday manages to pick the lock.

Wednesday arrives with the living tree Ichabod to rescue the entire Addams Family from their home once Margaux has ordered the entire town of Assimilation to destroy the Addams’ home with giant boulders thrown into the Addams’ home. Morticia and Wednesday share a hug for Wednesday’s return to rescue the family. Along with Parker, they expose Margaux for hiding hidden cameras in the homes of citizens of Assimilation.

After Margaux’s show is canceled due to Parker live streaming her rant with her phone and Uncle Fester decides to help Margaux sell houses for the extended Addams Family, the citizens of Assimilation want to help rebuild the Addams’ home to make amends for their actions. Wednesday tells her mother that although the citizens of Assimilation are unusual, they are good people, and they should not judge them for who they are. After the house is rebuilt, Pugsley completes his Mazurka, which causes Wednesday to smile.

Wednesday’s pigtails are nooses.

After Wednesday gives a great show at a science fair, a scientist claims to be her biological father to convince her to leave the other Addamses while on a family-bonding cross-country road trip. Her pigtails are regular with eyeball clips.

Wednesday 2022 (Netflix series)

In the series on Netflix, Wednesday (born Friday, October 13th, 2006) is new to Nevermore Academy after she was expelled from her old school for trying to kill her brother’s (Pugsley’s) bullies. She struggles with coming to grips with her newfound psychic abilities and fitting in with her new classmates. Upon arriving in Nevermore, she quickly finds herself caught up in the many mysteries surrounding the academy. She meets her roommate Enid Sinclair, and during the scene where Wednesday is talking to Principal Larissa Weems shortly after arriving, Morticia Addams says that the meaning behind Wednesday’s name is a word from a line from her favorite rhyme: «Wednesday’s child is full of woe.» She has black hair in two long braids, a fringe over her brow, a pale complexion, dark brown eyes, and black eyeshadow. She is relatively short compared to the other students at Nevermore and is also quite slim. She is often seen wearing black nail polish and, on occasion, black lipstick. Wednesday’s wardrobe is completely monochrome, exclusively black and white. As stated by Morticia Addams in Episode 1, Wednesday is «allergic to color» and wears a custom black Nevermore uniform instead of the standard indigo. Wednesday briefly owned a black «snood» that her roommate Enid gifted her for her 16th birthday, which she later lost at the Gates house. At the Rave’N dance, Wednesday is seen wearing a floor-length frilly black dress from Jericho’s antique store, Uriah’s Heap. The dress resembles a raven, which may foreshadow Morticia classifying her as a raven in Episode 5. It also features a black collar, possibly a reference to her traditional collared dress from previous adaptations. Wednesday also looks strikingly similar to her ancestor, Goody Addams.

She, Pugsley, and Joel are locked in the «Harmony Hut» and forced to watch upbeat family films to curb their antisocial behavior. On emerging from the hut, Wednesday feigns perkiness and agrees to play the role of Pocahontas. However, during the play, she leads the other social outcasts—who have all been cast as Native Americans—in a revolt, capturing Gary, Becky, and Amanda and leaving the camp in chaos. Before she leaves, Wednesday and Joel kiss. Joel is a neurotic, allergy-ridden boy with an overbearing mother. In one scene in the film, she smiles, which ends up scaring the campers, as well as her blonde nemesis. At the end of the film, it is suggested that Wednesday, though she obviously likes Joel, purposely tries to scare him to death after he brings up the subject of marriages.
• In the 1977 television holiday-themed special, Halloween with the New Addams Family, Lisa Loring plays a grown-up Wednesday, who mostly entertains their party guests with her flute, and can hear and understand coded help messages by bound-up members of the family, and dispatch help to free them. • Psychic Visions: Wednesday describes them as feeling like electroshock therapy but without the satisfying afterburn. Her visions trigger spontaneously at random and only seem to occur when she physically touches an object or person. Her visions show her events from the past or events in the near future, usually of a violent nature. Morticia tells Wednesday in Episode 5 that visions are influenced by the psychic’s disposition. Since Wednesday is very cynical and sees the world through a darker lens, her visions tend to reflect this. She is considered a Raven, a psychic who experiences negative visions.
• Spiritualist Practitioner: Using a séance, Wednesday attempted to summon Goody’s spirit in order to learn how to control her psychic ability.

• Peak Human Durability: Despite her appearance, Wednesday has great durability. She has shown herself to be capable of tolerating multiple injuries and continuing with little difficulty. While she is facing Joseph Crackston and receives an arrow shot in her shoulder, Wednesday is still able to fight, showing barely any sign of disconformity and even performing a side flip with little effort.
  • Pain Tolerance: Wednesday has an immense tolerance for pain. No matter how many injuries she gets or how dangerous they are, Wednesday will never complain, scream, or cry about it. When she is chained in Crackston’s crypt, she tells Tyler that she won’t cry or scream like a «little baby.» She didn’t even blink when she was kidnapped by the Nightshade Society and tied up her wrists tight enough to cut off circulation, demonstrating her great pain suppression.
• Peak Human Smell: Wednesday states that her olfactory sense is remarkable, as she was able to pick up and recognize the whiff of Thing’s favorite hand lotion.

She also is very competent at creating plans, which are mostly successful; she managed to disclose Marilyn Thornhill’s true identity to the principal Weems while she was transformed and made her believe that was Tyler. She was able to free herself of being tied up twice, thanks to a small knife she is always carrying with her in one of her shoes. Another example of her intelligence is when she resolved Poe’s riddle and discovered the secret library. Since episode one, Wednesday has had multiple plans to escape Nevermore. Wednesday is also an enthusiastic author, having already written at least one novel about a serial killer. This was revealed to have been rejected by an editor, resulting in Wednesday sending this editor a box of mouse traps as a ‘thank you’. Moreover, Wednesday is a talented cellist. She indulges in this habit frequently late at night.
  • Master Tactician: Wednesday is well known for always making plans down to the details. The night before the Poe Cup, she prepared, with the assistance of Thing, a trap to successfully defeat Bianca. After being kidnapped by the Nightshade Society, Wednesday was able to distract them and untie herself without anyone noticing, including Xavier Thorpe, who was right next to her. When she found out Tyler Galpin is the monster that has been committing all those murders, she trapped him by asking him to meet near the Crackston cave, and when she confronted him, she made sure he couldn’t escape with the help of her friends, with Bianca using her siren voice to force Tyler into submission.
  • Master Investigator: Despite being only a teenager, Wednesday has demonstrated to be a highly competent detective, at least on a professional level. By herself, she keeps an investigation going to find out who’s behind all the crimes in Nevermore. She was even capable of proving her father’s innocence by solving the murder of Garrett Gates and learning that the cause of death was actually nightshade poisoning.
  • Expert Engineer: Although she doesn’t show it very much, Wednesday is a very skilled engineer. She fixed the espresso machine in the cafe where Tyler works. Later, she alters the Black Cat team’s canoe for the Edgar Allen Poe Cup race, equipping it with chariot piles, a fishing-net launcher, and a concealed outboard motor. She also reveals to Tyler that she built a steam-powered guillotine when she was ten.
  • Expert Scientist: She is well-learned in this subject, particularly regarding carnivorous plants, due to her mother being an «enthusiast» on the subject. Notably, she is able to discern from second-hand descriptions alone that Garrett’s madness had been caused by exposure to nightshade extract.

When she finds out that Thing was sent by her parents to spy on her and report to them, she manipulates him by giving him two options: lock him up in her desk for the rest of the semester or submit to her and swear fidelity to her. She is later seen employing this skill against Lucas when he and his group attempt to bully Eugene Ottinger in Pilgrim World, where Wednesday successfully uses her agility to outmaneuver and fight one of the gang.
• Sword Mastery: Wednesday is an excellent fencer with a graceful finesse in swordsmanship, likely having been taught by her father. She appears to have a natural talent for it, as seen when Wednesday singlehandedly challenged Bianca Barclay without hesitation, who was the undisputed fencing champion in the training hall. After watching her easily defeat Rowan Laslow, Bianca would complain about the lack of «real competition,» which Wednesday would later fill in. Wednesday was the only opponent to contend with Bianca evenly, and she was the only fencer in the academy to pose a legitimate challenge to the champion. Her fencing display of the lunge is also seen when she encounters Uncle Fester. Later, in facing a reincarnated version of Joseph Crackstone, Wednesday would incorporate her fencing skills with the use of a sword against the undead pilgrim.
• Expert Marksman: Wednesday is very proficient with archery. When visiting Nevermore’s archery club, she proves to be extremely accurate with her arrows, hitting the target twice, with the second time hitting an apple simultaneously.
• Master Acrobat: Wednesday appears to be an adept gymnast, as she is capable of performing complex acrobatic maneuvers, such as somersaults. In her fencing duel against Bianca, Wednesday performs a side flip while dodging her attacks, and in her duel against a reincarnated Joseph Crackstone, Wednesday performs a defensive back flip to stagger the supernatural pilgrim.
• Multilingualism: Wednesday is fluent in English, Spanish, and German. She is also capable of reading Latin and Italian, as seen when she helps Tyler fix a coffee machine with an instruction manual written in Italian and when she reads a stone inscription in Latin during an investigation in Nevermore Academy. In Pilgrim World, Wednesday speaks fluent German while dressing up as a guide for German tourists.

Relationships

• Morticia (Mother): Wednesday has always had a strained relationship with her mother. For most of the series, it can be seen that Wednesday has a one-sided rivalry with Morticia, often defying and rebelling against her. Although Morticia loves her daughter and wants the best for her, she is incapable of getting close to her. After she resolved the crime of Garrett Gates, Wednesday left her hatred behind and reconciled with Morticia.

• Gomez (Father): Wednesday has a good relationship with her father. She is deeply grateful for the way he raised her. Wednesday demonstrates her affection by doing all in her power to prove that Gomez is innocent of the murder of Garrett Gates.

• Pugsley (Brother): Wednesday often performs experiments on her brother, either for fun or for punishment. She is nevertheless shown on occasions to care about him. In the Netflix series, Wednesday exacts revenge on the bullies who were tormenting Pugsley by releasing piranhas into the pool they were in, proclaiming, «The only person who gets to torture my brother is me.»

• Uncle Fester (Uncle): In the Netflix series, Fester’s behavior seems goofy even by Addams’ standards, and Wednesday seems occasionally put off or annoyed by his antics. Enid’s bright colors and cheerful disposition nauseated Wednesday, who promptly removed all color from her side of the room, putting a black piece of tape down the center to divide them. Enid refuses to be put off by Wednesday’s prickly demeanor and makes a point of trying to become her friend. As time passes, the girls become closer, in spite of Wednesday’s attempts to push everyone away. She grows to care enough for Enid that she volunteers to be a rower in the Poe Cup, knowing how much it means for her to win. Though Wednesday’s intentions weren’t pure, as she wanted to beat Bianca. They became fellow investigators in the mystery of Nevermore, though Enid couldn’t stomach the gruesome aspects of the murders that Wednesday found fascinating. She eventually moves her murder board for Enid’s comfort. She repeatedly masks her true feelings so as not to hurt Enid’s, such as when Enid gifted her a snood for her sixteenth birthday. Enid carefully crafts a birthday surprise for her best friend by concocting a ruse with their friends, putting a lot of effort into making Wednesday happy. That night, Wednesday, tricks her into investigating the Gates family home under the pretext of having a girls’ night out. They, alongside Tyler, are nearly killed by the Hyde, which changes Enid’s perspective of their friendship. She realizes that Wednesday is incapable of seeing past her own agendas and needs, making her a terrible friend. She decides to leave and move in with Yoko. Wednesday fears that by chasing everyone out of her life, she’s fulfilling her destiny of always being alone — which doesn’t feel nearly as good as she thought. Even though Enid moves out, she conveniently «forgets» things at least three times a day to stop by their room. After voicing everything they dislike about one another, Enid storms out of the room. She submits a form to change rooms, which phases Wednesday when she learns of the choice. They become roommates again when Enid realizes she needs boundaries that Yoko can’t meet. She’s ready to lay the tape back down, but Wednesday tells her not to bother. The girls step closer from their sides of the room as they use Thing as a cover to admit they miss each other. When Wednesday gets expelled, Enid helps her pack up her belongings. Wednesday tells her that the mark Enid has left on her is indelible, and, in turn, Enid confesses that she is going to miss Wednesday and that she has learned much from her. She asks her for a final hug, but Wednesday refuses, so the girls agree that not hugging is their thing. After hearing that Wednesday is in trouble, she leaves Ajax Petropolus with the others and goes into the woods to try and help her. This is when Enid is finally able to ‘wolf out’ and fight Tyler Galpin, who is in Hyde form, to save Wednesday. She wins the fight with Tyler and successfully aids in Wednesday’s mission to kill the resurrected Joseph Crackstone. As Enid stumbles out of the woods after turning human, Ajax embraces her and brings her to the group. She asks where Wednesday is, and when she sees everyone’s reactions to the question, her eyes widen in panic and worry. Almost instantaneously, Wednesday walks through the gates, and Enid sees her. She runs over, and the two share a meaningful moment — their first hug. With classes canceled for the rest of the semester, Enid hopes Wednesday will visit her in San Francisco or that she’ll see her next year.

• Eugene Ottinger (Friend): Eugene and Wednesday have a sibling-like relationship; Wednesday tells him that he is like her younger brother without the desire to strangle him. Wednesday is very protective of Eugene, as seen when she defends him from Lucas Walker and his friends, who were attacking him in the Pilgrim World. After Eugene is attacked by Tyler Galpin in his hyde form, Wednesday feels responsible, saying that she should’ve been there to prevent the attack. She visits him frequently at the hospital and takes care of his bees in the hive. Eugene is also very loyal to her, and according to his mother, Eugene truly appreciates her and talks about her every time, seeing Wednesday as his first and only true friend. After she defeats Joseph Crackstone, Eugene helps her face Marilyn Thornhill, and then Wednesday tells him to stay away as she handles Thornhill.

• Bianca Barclay (Frenemy): At the beginning of the first season, Bianca and Wednesday were relatively hostile towards each other. Since the first time they met, they disliked each other, quickly starting a rivalry between them, competing verbally and physically. However, at the end of the season, they defeated Joseph Crackstone together.
