Винтерфелл (ориг. Winterfell) — родовой замок дома Старков. Согласно преданию, он был построен восемь тысячелетий назад.

Описание[]

Это большой замок, расположенный в центре Севера и являвшийся его столицей. Рядом проходит Королевский тракт, по которому, проделав путь в тысячу миль, можно добраться до Королевской гавани. Сам замок построен на вершине холма, под которым бьют горячие источники, что позволяет пережить здесь даже самые холодные зимы. Под Винтерфеллом находятся катакомбы, используемые в качестве склепа дома Старков. Также в замке, как и во всех замках Севера, есть богороща, место поклонения Старым Богам. Рядом с замком расположено небольшое поселение, которое называется Зимний городок.

История[]

Согласно мифам, Винтерфелл был построен восемь тысяч лет назад Брандоном Строителем, который прибегнул к помощи гигантов. Точнее, замок начал строиться при Брандоне, и, как и в случае с другими замками, на его постройку ушли тысячи лет. Первые люди решили обосноваться на этом месте из-за горячих источников, бьющих из-под земли, которые помогали им пережить тяжелые северные зимы.

Чтобы никто другой не посягнул на это место, первые люди начали возводить стены. В давние времена у них было много врагов, в том числе жители Барроутона и болотные жители. Но самыми страшными врагами были Болтоны, или, как они называли себя до завоевания, Красные короли. Согласно преданиям, Короли Севера сражались с Болтонами начиная со времен Долгой ночи и заканчивая вторжением андалов. Именно из-за Болтонов и были воздвигнуты стены Винтерфелла, и чем чаще те нападали, тем крепче были стены, и тем больше на них было башен и укреплений.

Замок рос, и каждую зиму из окрестностей к нему стали стекаться крестьяне. Зимой они прятались за стенами замка, а весной пополняли армию Старков.

Здесь всегда правили Старки, сначала — как короли Севера, а после Завоевательной войны — в качестве верховных лордов Севера.

Во время Войны пяти королей замок был захвачен Теоном Грейджоем, бывшим воспитанником Эддарда Старка. Винтерфелл был освобожден от железнорождённых Рамси Сноу, который перебил всех его жителей, а замок предал огню. Замок не требует постоянного отопления — он построен на горячих источниках, вода из которых течет внутри его стен и обогревает комнаты.
• Название замка состоит из двух частей — «winter» («зима») и «fell» («гора, холм»). Слово «fell» для обозначения горы/холма практически ушло из живого употребления и сохранилось преимущественно в двусоставных географических названиях средневековых замков Северной Англии.

Ви́нтерфе́лл — родовой замок Старков, откуда те правят Севером. Расположен в центре региона, на восточной окраине Волчьего леса, к западу от Белого Ножа и юго-западу от Длинного озера. Королевский тракт проходит мимо стен Винтерфелла. Зимний городок у стен замка служит приютом для подданных Старков в долгие зимы. Винтерфелл стоит на холмах — землю перед его строительством не выравнивали, и некоторые постройки гораздо выше других. 1. Северные ворота. Северные ворота существенно выше южных. Существует туннель, идущий под замковой стеной с третьего этажа южных ворот на первый этаж северных^[3].
2. Разрушенная башня, очень древняя, зубчатая, в прошлом — самая высокая сторожевая башня замка. В середине II века после З.Э. башня загорелась от удара молнии и частично разрушилась — верхний третий ярус провалился внутрь. Ее так и не восстановили^[3].
3. Оранжерея, или зимний сад, теплица со стенами и крышей из толстого желтого стекла. Здесь даже зимой выращиваются свежие фрукты и овощи.
4. Кладбище и вход в крипту. Они расположены в самой старой части замка, к западу от разрушенной башни^[4]. Вход в крипту находится у подножия Первой Твердыни. В крипту, расположенную глубоко под землей, ведет спиральная лестница^[5].
5. Первая Твердыня, старая бывшая главная башня замка. Это круглая башня, более высокая, чем это кажется. Украшена горгульями^[3]. Первая Твердыня считается самой старой частью замка, но это не значит, что она стоит на этом месте с самого строительства Винтерфелла. Мейстеры, обследовавшие башню, пришли к выводу о том, что её перестраивали бесчетное количество раз, и трудно сказать, когда она была построена. 9. Арсенал. Его с Великим Замком соединяет крытый переход с окошками^[8].
10. Западные ворота, или Охотничьи. Если выехать из них и проехать через зимний городок, можно попасть прямо в Волчий Лес^[9].
11. Псарня, находящаяся у западных ворот — что и понятно, если лорд на охоту в лес выезжает в основном через эти ворота.
12. Гостевой дом, примыкающий к богороще. Здесь останавливаются гости Винтерфелла; завтракают они в утренней комнате гостевого дома^[10].
13. Крытый переход между арсеналом и Великим Замком. Из его окон видно, что делается внизу, во дворе^[8].
14. Великий Замок — современный донжон Винтерфелла, самая главная башня замка. Здесь живет лорд Старк и его семья.

    

    

15. Воронья вышка. Здесь держат почтовых воронов и живет мейстер. Вышка стоит на возвышении, и с ее второго этажа на четвертый этаж колокольной башни перекинут мостик^[3].
16. Кухня, круглое большое здание рядом с западными воротами; занимала отдельный флигель, стоящий поодаль от чертога и жилых зданий^[5]
17. Главный двор. Здесь защитники замка тренируются в бое на мечах^[8].

19. Библиотечная башня. В библиотеке Винтерфелла собрано больше ста тысяч книг, многие из них очень редкие и существуют в одном-единственном экземпляре^[10]

Сожжение и восстановление

В конце второй книги Винтерфелл был превращен в руины людьми Рамси Сноу, когда тот отбил замок у Теона Грейджоя; при этом большая часть замковой челяди была перебита. Ответственность за сожжение замка Рамси возложил на Теона. Сам Рамси в дальнейшем именовался «лордом Винтерфелла». Замок был сильно поврежден пожаром, большая часть башен и других построек осталась без крыш, некоторые здания обвалились, однако двойное кольцо гранитных стен все еще стояло в целости. Первая Твердыня обрушилась, от нее остался только обгоревший каркас. Все солома и дерево сгорели почти полностью. Теплицы были разбиты, и все фрукты и овощи в них вымерзли. Богорощу пожар не затронул, и выжившие вороны из сожженной башни мейстера переселились туда.

Около года замок лежал в руинах, пока в пятой книге Русе Болтон не решился его восстановить. Даже частично разрушенный замок оставался сердцем Севера и, кроме того, мощной крепостью, где северяне-лоялисты могли бы эффективно защищаться от атак Станниса Баратеона. В замке жило около двадцати человек-погорельцев, переживших сожжение замка и поселившихся на развалинах; Русе Болтон заставил их участвовать в восстановлении замка, а потом повесил.

Армия Русе Болтона и его союзников располагалась в шатрах во внутренних дворах, в подвалах, под башнями и в пустующих постройках. Ворота замка и крышу Великого Чертога восстановили первым делом, нарубив для этого деревьев в Волчьем Лесу. Некоторые спальни в главной башне уцелели при пожаре, и их обставили привезенной из Барроутона мебелью, приведя в приличный вид. Взамен сожженных конюшен построили новые, вдвое больше старых; позже в этих конюшнях, правда, из-за нападавшего снега — а возможно, и из-за чьей-то диверсии — обвалилась крыша, убив двадцать шесть лошадей и двух конюхов. Этимология

Winter в переводе с английского означает «зима». У слова fell есть значение «лютый», «свирепый», поэтому появлялись такие варианты перевода, как Лихозимь и Злозимье (т.е. «лихая, злая зима»). Fell может быть формой прошедшего времени от глагола fall (падать, обрушиваться); у него также есть значение «шкура».

В северной Англии и на острове Мэн словом fell (от старонорвежского fjall — гора) называли каменистые гряды и горы, а также не заросшие лесом возвышенности, используемые как пастбища. В таком значении слово Fell входит во многие географические названия Северной Англии; в частности, этот корень есть в названии самой высокой точки Англии — горы Скофел-Пайк (Scafell Pike). Замки в Средневековье часто строились на возвышенностях, так что Винтерфелл вполне может быть «зимним холмом».

Winterfell is the capital of the Kingdom of the North and the seat and the ancestral home of the royal House Stark. It is a very large castle located at the center of the North, from where the head of House Stark rules over his or her people.

During the War of the Five Kings, Winterfell is seized by the Starks’ enemies, first by the ironborn, and later by the Boltons. Eventually the Starks liberate Winterfell. In the subsequent Great War, Winterfell is the site of the great battle between the Army of the Dead and the Starks and their allies.

History

Background

According to legend, House Stark has held Winterfell for 8,000 years, though it has been considerably expanded upon over the centuries.^[1] It was said to have been built by House Stark’s founder, Bran the Builder, during the Age of Heroes, who was also said to have constructed the Wall and even Storm’s End.

The castle is located alongside the Kingsroad as it makes its way from the Wall to the capital of the Six Kingdoms, King’s Landing, more than a thousand miles to the south. A small godswood is enclosed within the walls. It is situated atop hot springs which keep the castle warm even in the worst winters.^[2] Winding tombs below the castle contain the remains of Stark kings and lords and record the history of the ancient family.^[3] The castle has stood for millennia.^[4] According to Maester Luwin, there are hidden passageways built in the castle so its Lords could escape.^[5]

Game of Thrones: Season 1

The Stark family is at Winterfell. Following Jon Arryn’s death, king Robert arrives along with much of the royal court, including Cersei Lannister, their three children, Jaime and Tyrion. A great feast is held in Robert’s honor. Robert visits the tomb of Lyanna Stark and asks Eddard to return with him to King’s Landing as his new Hand.^[3]

After word reaches Robb that his father has been arrested in King’s Landing, he calls the armies of all the Northern bannermen. Robb departs Winterfell to lead his army to war in the south and leaves Bran in charge as acting lord of Winterfell.^[6]

Game of Thrones: Season 2

House Greyjoy invades the North. The treacherous Theon captures Winterfell.^[7] Theon’s men turn against him and hand him over to the Boltons. After killing the ironborn, Ramsay Snow orders to destroy Winterfell. The castle is put to the torch and most of her people to the sword, with few if any survivors. All of the wooden parts of the castle are burned out, though the core stone structures remain intact.^[5]

Game of Thrones: Season 3

When word reaches Robb at Harrenhal of the destruction of Winterfell.^[8] Following the Red Wedding, Roose Bolton intends to relocate to Winterfell.^[9]

Game of Thrones: Season 4

Following the surrender of Moat Cailin, the Bolton army returns to the North, to enforce Bolton/Lannister rule, and heads for Winterfell.^[10]

Game of Thrones: Season 5

The Boltons settle in at Winterfell and bring in work crews and timber to start rebuilding the burned-out parts of the castle.^[11] Stannis attempts to liberate Winterfell, but is defeated by the Boltons.^[12]

Game of Thrones: Season 6

The Starks defeat the Boltons. Wintefell is finally restored to House Starks.^[13]

The Northen lords gather at Winterfell and proclaim Jon the King in the North.^[14]

Game of Thrones: Season 7

Jon holds court at Winterfell, in which he and Sansa prepare for the defense against the White Walkers.^[15]

Sansa helps prepare Winterfell for the Great War. Bran returns to Winterfell,^[16] and Arya too.^[17]

Game of Thrones: Season 8

Jon returns to Winterfell alongside Daenerys and her troops. They are greeted in the Winterfell courtyard by the Starks.^[18]

The combined armies of the living prepare the defenses of Winterfell against the oncoming army of the dead. The White Walkers soon arrive in the night with their army of the dead,^[19] leading to a great battle. As a result of this battle, Winterfell is nearly razed completely to the ground. Many battlements, walls, and towers are destroyed, leaving the great castle in a state of ruin. The crypts beneath Winterfell also received damage.^[20]

• Queen Sansa Stark, daughter of Lord Eddard and Lady Catelyn Stark. Briefly lived in Winterfell under the Bolton’s reign as Ramsay Bolton’s wife, but escaped and helped Jon retake Winterfell with the help of the knights of the Vale. She is the current Queen in the North and Lady of Winterfell.
• Wolkan, the castle’s new maester, after the death of Maester Luwin. Formally served the Boltons until their subsequent extinction at the hands of the Starks.
• Aberdolf Strongbeard, man-at-arms in the Winterfell garrison.

• Lord Rickon Stark, the Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North. He swore allegiance to King Viserys I Targaryen and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, promising to uphold the princess’s status as heir to the Iron Throne.

Behind the scenes

For the television series, a variety of locations were used to create Winterfell as it appears on screen. For the pilot episode, Doune Castle in Scotland was used for some exterior shots and the great feast held when King Robert Baratheon and his party arrive. Castle Ward in County Down, Northern Ireland was used for the scenes of sparring in Winterfell’s castle yard and the arrival of Robert’s party at Winterfell’s gates. The rest of the castle, including the other interiors and the scenes involving Bran climbing the walls, were filmed as interiors at the Paint Hall studio facility in Belfast. For the first season itself, Castle Ward was the principal filming location for the Winterfell scenes. Doune Castle was not revisited. One of the only full scenes from Doune Castle to survive from the pilot episode is the scene in the crypts of Winterfell when Eddard and Robert visit Lyanna’s grave. All subsequent appearances of the Winterfell crypts from Season 2 onward were filmed in the cellars of Shane’s Castle in Northern Ireland.

While it isn’t visible on-camera at all, the cellars of Shane’s Castle are infested with numerous spiders. Any scenes in the cellars involving candles with open flames (all of them, because it is dark) will make swarms of spiders crawl out of their hiding places to scramble away from the heat source. The actors report that while the camera can’t see them, they can, and there are so many they can hear them — and even feel them falling onto them. The actors don’t like filming scenes in the cellar as a result.^[21]

As of the end of Season 5, Winterfell is one of three locations (the others being King’s Landing and Castle Black/the Wall) to be featured in every opening credits sequence, regardless as to whether the location is actually visited in the episode (this includes Season 3 and virtually all of Season 4 during which Winterfell is never visited nor seen at all).

As explained in the Blu-ray commentary, the main Winterfell set was greatly expanded in Season 5. The original sets from Seasons 1 and 2 primarily consisted of the outer courtyard, the feast hall, and one interior bedroom which could be redressed (for Eddard and Catelyn’s room, Bran’s room, etc.), but otherwise there wasn’t an extensive interconnected interior set. For Season 5, the production team constructed a complex of staircases, corridors and bedrooms, all added on top of the existing courtyard and feast hall.^[21]

In the books

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Winterfell is a huge castle complex spanning several acres, consisting of two massive walls with a ditch between them and a village located just outside. The complex consists of many buildings and keeps, some ancient and decrepit, some in good repair. According to legend, Winterfell was built by Bran the Builder eight thousand years ago.

The castle has been built over natural hot springs, and the scalding waters rush through its walls and chambers like blood through a man’s body, driving the chill from the stone halls, filling the glass gardens with a moist warmth, keeping the earth from freezing. Open pools smoke day and night in a dozen small courtyards. In summer, it is insignificant; in winter, it is the difference between life and death.

There is no mentioning in the novels that there are any hidden passageways in the castle.

The full castle as it appears at the start of the narrative has not been standing for eight thousand years: it was gradually expanded over many centuries like a tree growing new branches, giving it a less organized appearance than large castles which were planned out all at once such as the Red Keep in King’s Landing. Parts have also had to be rebuilt over time, either due to natural degeneration or damage in sieges (Winterfell was burned out several times in ancient wars with the Boltons and other enemies, but the Starks always rallied and rebuilt it). The eldest surviving part of the castle is the First Keep, an old tower no longer actively used, which some maesters think dates back to some point after the Andal Invasion began six thousand years ago.

The crypts underneath Winterfell are massive — larger than the entire castle complex above ground. This is a testament to just how long the Starks have held Winterfell: according to tradition, there should be eight thousand years’ worth of tombs in the crypts. According to tradition, while all Stark family members are buried in the crypts, statues are only made for those who were head of House Stark (either as kings or later as lords). There have been some exceptions over the generations, and Eddard himself had statues made at the tombs of his older brother Brandon and his sister Lyanna. The most ancient tombs are in the lower levels, and the more current ones closer to the surface. Many of the lower levels are half-collapsed and unexplored. With their vast size and lack of active use, it is quite easy for someone to hide in the crypts for weeks or even months at a time, as Bran, Rickon, and their followers did during the Sack of Winterfell, provided that they bring sufficient supplies with them. According to legend, when the infamous wildling rogue Bael the Bard seduced the daughter of a Stark lord, they hid out in the crypts for nearly a year undetected, long enough that when the daughter one day reappeared in her chambers she had with her the infant son that she had with Bael.

Winterfell is the capital of the Kingdom of the North and the seat and the ancestral home of the royal House Stark. It is a very large castle located at the center of the North, from where the head of House Stark rules over his or her people.

During the War of the Five Kings, Winterfell is seized by the Starks’ enemies, first by the ironborn, and later by the Boltons. Eventually the Starks liberate Winterfell. In the subsequent Great War, Winterfell is the site of the great battle between the Army of the Dead and the Starks and their allies.

History

Background

According to legend, House Stark has held Winterfell for 8,000 years, though it has been considerably expanded upon over the centuries.^[1] It was said to have been built by House Stark’s founder, Bran the Builder, during the Age of Heroes, who was also said to have constructed the Wall and even Storm’s End.

The castle is located alongside the Kingsroad as it makes its way from the Wall to the capital of the Six Kingdoms, King’s Landing, more than a thousand miles to the south. A small godswood is enclosed within the walls. It is situated atop hot springs which keep the castle warm even in the worst winters.^[2] Winding tombs below the castle contain the remains of Stark kings and lords and record the history of the ancient family.^[3] The castle has stood for millennia.^[4] According to Maester Luwin, there are hidden passageways built in the castle so its Lords could escape.^[5]

Game of Thrones: Season 1

The Stark family is at Winterfell. Following Jon Arryn’s death, king Robert arrives along with much of the royal court, including Cersei Lannister, their three children, Jaime and Tyrion. A great feast is held in Robert’s honor. Robert visits the tomb of Lyanna Stark and asks Eddard to return with him to King’s Landing as his new Hand.^[3]

After word reaches Robb that his father has been arrested in King’s Landing, he calls the armies of all the Northern bannermen. Robb departs Winterfell to lead his army to war in the south and leaves Bran in charge as acting lord of Winterfell.^[6]

Game of Thrones: Season 2

House Greyjoy invades the North. The treacherous Theon captures Winterfell.^[7] Theon’s men turn against him and hand him over to the Boltons. After killing the ironborn, Ramsay Snow orders to destroy Winterfell. The castle is put to the torch and most of her people to the sword, with few if any survivors. All of the wooden parts of the castle are burned out, though the core stone structures remain intact.^[5]

Game of Thrones: Season 3

When word reaches Robb at Harrenhal of the destruction of Winterfell.^[8] Following the Red Wedding, Roose Bolton intends to relocate to Winterfell.^[9]

Game of Thrones: Season 4

Following the surrender of Moat Cailin, the Bolton army returns to the North, to enforce Bolton/Lannister rule, and heads for Winterfell.^[10]

Game of Thrones: Season 5

The Boltons settle in at Winterfell and bring in work crews and timber to start rebuilding the burned-out parts of the castle.^[11] Stannis attempts to liberate Winterfell, but is defeated by the Boltons.^[12]

Game of Thrones: Season 6

The Starks defeat the Boltons. Wintefell is finally restored to House Starks.^[13]

The Northen lords gather at Winterfell and proclaim Jon the King in the North.^[14]

Game of Thrones: Season 7

Jon holds court at Winterfell, in which he and Sansa prepare for the defense against the White Walkers.^[15]

Sansa helps prepare Winterfell for the Great War. Bran returns to Winterfell,^[16] and Arya too.^[17]

Game of Thrones: Season 8

Jon returns to Winterfell alongside Daenerys and her troops. They are greeted in the Winterfell courtyard by the Starks.^[18]

The combined armies of the living prepare the defenses of Winterfell against the oncoming army of the dead. The White Walkers soon arrive in the night with their army of the dead,^[19] leading to a great battle. As a result of this battle, Winterfell is nearly razed completely to the ground. Many battlements, walls, and towers are destroyed, leaving the great castle in a state of ruin. The crypts beneath Winterfell also received damage.^[20]

Any scenes in the cellars involving candles with open flames (all of them, because it is dark) will make swarms of spiders crawl out of their hiding places to scramble away from the heat source. The actors report that while the camera can’t see them, they can, and there are so many they can hear them — and even feel them falling onto them. The actors don’t like filming scenes in the cellar as a result.^[21]

As of the end of Season 5, Winterfell is one of three locations (the others being King’s Landing and Castle Black/the Wall) to be featured in every opening credits sequence, regardless as to whether the location is actually visited in the episode (this includes Season 3 and virtually all of Season 4 during which Winterfell is never visited nor seen at all).

As explained in the Blu-ray commentary, the main Winterfell set was greatly expanded in Season 5. The original sets from Seasons 1 and 2 primarily consisted of the outer courtyard, the feast hall, and one interior bedroom which could be redressed (for Eddard and Catelyn’s room, Bran’s room, etc.), but otherwise there wasn’t an extensive interconnected interior set. For Season 5, the production team constructed a complex of staircases, corridors and bedrooms, all added on top of the existing courtyard and feast hall.^[21]

In the books

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Winterfell is a huge castle complex spanning several acres, consisting of two massive walls with a ditch between them and a village located just outside. The complex consists of many buildings and keeps, some ancient and decrepit, some in good repair. According to legend, Winterfell was built by Bran the Builder eight thousand years ago.

The castle has been built over natural hot springs, and the scalding waters rush through its walls and chambers like blood through a man’s body, driving the chill from the stone halls, filling the glass gardens with a moist warmth, keeping the earth from freezing. Open pools smoke day and night in a dozen small courtyards. In summer, it is insignificant; in winter, it is the difference between life and death.

There is no mentioning in the novels that there are any hidden passageways in the castle.

The full castle as it appears at the start of the narrative has not been standing for eight thousand years: it was gradually expanded over many centuries like a tree growing new branches, giving it a less organized appearance than large castles which were planned out all at once such as the Red Keep in King’s Landing. Parts have also had to be rebuilt over time, either due to natural degeneration or damage in sieges (Winterfell was burned out several times in ancient wars with the Boltons and other enemies, but the Starks always rallied and rebuilt it). The eldest surviving part of the castle is the First Keep, an old tower no longer actively used, which some maesters think dates back to some point after the Andal Invasion began six thousand years ago.

The crypts underneath Winterfell are massive — larger than the entire castle complex above ground. This is a testament to just how long the Starks have held Winterfell: according to tradition, there should be eight thousand years’ worth of tombs in the crypts. According to tradition, while all Stark family members are buried in the crypts, statues are only made for those who were head of House Stark (either as kings or later as lords). There have been some exceptions over the generations, and Eddard himself had statues made at the tombs of his older brother Brandon and his sister Lyanna. The most ancient tombs are in the lower levels, and the more current ones closer to the surface. Many of the lower levels are half-collapsed and unexplored. With their vast size and lack of active use, it is quite easy for someone to hide in the crypts for weeks or even months at a time, as Bran, Rickon, and their followers did during the Sack of Winterfell, provided that they bring sufficient supplies with them. According to legend, when the infamous wildling rogue Bael the Bard seduced the daughter of a Stark lord, they hid out in the crypts for nearly a year undetected, long enough that when the daughter one day reappeared in her chambers she had with her the infant son that she had with Bael.

Винтерфелл — знаменитый замок, родовое гнездо семейства Старков, королей Севера из книг Дж. Мартина «Песнь Льда и Пламени» и сериала «Игра Престолов».

У слова Винтерфелл есть много значений. Его можно перевести с английского как Winter — зима, fell — лютый, свирепый. В Англии словом fell называли горы. В средневековье замки строили на возвышеностях и название замка может означать «Зимний холм». 

Создание

Основа замка была построена Брандоном Строителем — основателем дома Старков, в Век Героев. По Легендам в постройке Винтерфелла принимали участие великаны.  Первоначально это был небольшой форт, который рос с веками.

Так как разные постройки принадлежат разным векам, архитектура в Винтерфелле самая разнообразная.

Место

Винтерфелл был возведен на холмах и горячих источниках. Теплая вода идет внутри стен, поэтому даже зимой в замке тепло. Подземные бездонные источники согревают жителей замка и богорощу. Горячие источники под замком нагреваются Мировой печью.

Горячие, подземные воды нагреваются — печами мира. Теми, что создали вулканы на Вестеросе.

За пределами замка находится Зимний городок, где процветает торговля и ремесло. Долгое время Старки проводили праздники в городке. Сюда съезжались жители близлежащих земель в долгую зиму, что бы переждать ее. В долгое лето городок пустел. Как и подобает в городе располагались таверны, бордели, дома для слуг и гостей.

Стены

Замок обнесен двойной стеной из серого гранита, укрепленный башнями. Между стенами находится ров.

Внутренняя стена высотой 30 метров, появилась самой первой, около 2000 лет назад. Ее башни четырехугольные.

Внешняя стена высотой всего 24 метра, появилась во время правления Эдрика Снежная Борода. Башни внешней стены — восьмиугольные.

Ворота

В замке существуют двое ворот. Северные (1) выше южных. Но Южные ворота (24) считаются главными. Западные ворота (10) вели в Волчий лес, поэтому назывались Охотничьими. Восточные ворота (8) выходят прямиком на Королевский Тракт -самую большую дорогу Вестероса.

Башни

Среди стен находится разрушенная башня (2). Она самая старая и была повреждена молнией. Несмотря на то, что это произошло в ~ 150 году после З.Э., ее так и не восстановили.

Первая твердыня (5) является старой круглой башней, украшенной горгульями.

Колокольная башня (18), располагается у западной стены, рядом с кухней. Мост от нее ведет к вышке мейстра.

В Вороньей вышке (15), живет сам мейстер замка, а так же находятся почтовые вороны.

Башня с библиотекой (19) имеет огромное собрание книг со всего Вестероса и может похвастаться редкими изданиями.

Внутренние постройки

На северной стороне замка находится Зимний сад (3) или теплица в которой выращивают овощи и свежие фрукты. В старой части замка имеется кладбище (4). Там же располагается вход в крипту где похоронены многие Старки.

Богороща (6) это небольшой святой лес, который оставался неизменным на протяжении тысяч лет. В богороще растет чардерево, перед которым люди Севера молятся Старым Богам. Рядом с деревом располагается глубокий, теплый пруд. Рядом с богорощей, прямо в центре, располагается Дом для почетных гостей (12).

В замке есть место караульной (7), арсеналу (9) и псарне (11).

Великий замок (14) располагается у восточной стены и является главной башней, где жило и живет семейство Старков. Из замка в арсенал ведет крытый переход (13), с которого Старки наблюдали за тем что твориться в Главном дворе (17).

У восточной стены, близ Великого замка располагается септа (20) построенная специально для Кейтилин Старк. Рядом с септой находится Большой чертог (22), где стоит трон Северных Королей и где Старки проводят свои пиры.

У западной стены располагается кухня (16) и конюшни (21).

Прямо у южных ворот стоит кузница (23).

Сожжение

Когда многие из Старков были убиты в войне за Железный трон, замок был захвачен бастардом Рамси Сноу. Многие жители замка были убиты, а некоторые постройки сожжены. Рамси так же сжег Зимний городок.

Многие башни пали в пожаре, в том числе Первая Твердыня (5), но гранитная стена, оба ряда, остались не тронутыми. Хотя теплицы с урожаем были так же уничтожены, богороща не пострадала.

Восстановление

Спустя год после пожара. Русе Болтон нынешний «Лорд Винтерфелла» решил его восстановить. Винтерфелл все еще оставался сердцем Севера и без него невозможно было взять по свое крыло другие дома.

В восстановлении замка принимали участие выжившие в пожаре. После того как крепость была частично восстановлена, все жители были повешены.

Замок полностью оккупировали солдаты Болтона. Они располагались по всей крепости: в подвалах, башнях и тд.

Битвы

В 302 году после З.Э. возле замка произошло сражение под названием Битва Бастардов. В ходе битвы Винтерфелл был возвращен законным владельцам Старкам. Проигравшие Болтоны, проиграли. Их дом перестал существовать.

Легенды

Многие предполагают, что под замком спит настоящий дракон, который согревает горячие источники. Бытуют мнения что это не дракон, а возможно яйца дракона которые находятся где-то в крипте. Почему же появились такие мысли? Дело в том, что драконы всегда были связаны с подземным теплом в Вестеросе.
