The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV^[1] manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo’s Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend‘s SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

In January 2001, Volvo débuted its Adventure Concept Car at the North American International Auto Show, to gauge reaction to the styling and features of its upcoming SUV.^[9] In November 2001, Volvo released a teaser image showing the frontal styling of the production version, named the XC90. Notable as Volvo’s first SUV model, the styling of the XC90 recalled the concept.^[10] In January 2002, the full XC90 unveiling occurred, at the North American International Auto Show.^[10] Production began in August 2002, after Volvo’s traditional mid-year shutdown, with the first XC90s coming out of the Torslanda factory in Sweden.^[10]

At its North American launch for the 2003 model year, the XC90 was presented with a choice of two trim levels, the 2.5 T and the T6. The 2.5 T was the entry level version and offered a 2.5-litre B5254T2 «T5» turbocharged inline-five engine, producing 208 hp (155 kW) and 236 lb⋅ft (320 N⋅m) mated to an Aisin co-developed five-speed AW55-50/51 automatic. The T6 offered a 2.9-litre B6294T twin-turbocharged inline-six with 268 hp (200 kW) and 280 lb⋅ft (380 N⋅m) mated to a GM-sourced, Volvo-modified four-speed 4T65EV/GT automatic. While the 2.5T came standard with front-wheel drive, a Haldex Traction all-wheel drive (AWD) system was optional. The T6 was offered only with the AWD system.

A Yamaha V8 engine was added in 2005. This 4.4-litre Volvo B8444S engine produced 288 hp (215 kW) for the first few models later upgraded to^{[citation needed]} 311 hp (232 kW) and 325 lb⋅ft (441 N⋅m) of torque.^[11] Volvo sold just over 40,000 XC90 units in North America that year.^[12]

The XC90 won the North American Car of the Year award and Motor Trend magazine’s Sport/Utility of the Year for 2003.

Jeremy Clarkson, ex-host of Top Gear, has previously owned three XC90s,^[13] and claims they were designed by «someone who must’ve had children due to its practicality.»

The XC90 was updated for 2007 with a restyled front and rear and a revised interior. The 235 hp (175 kW; 238 PS) 3.2 L SI6 straight-6 engine replaced the 208 hp (155 kW; 211 PS) B524T2 straight-5 in the base model for the US market. The 2007 XC90 debuted in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show.

For model year (MY) 2009, the XC90 received a new rear logo, featuring larger lettering with wider spaces between the «VOLVO» letters.

In 2010, all XC90 models received painted wheel arches (previously they were optional). In addition, a new, larger, circular Volvo logo appeared on the front grille.

For MY 2012, new LED tail-lights became available on certain models, although entry-level models retain the previous style. For MY 2013, the XC90 received a cosmetic refresh that included standard LED daytime running lights and taillights, and exterior revisions including body colour bumpers, rocker panels and silver trim replacing black plastic trim.

The refreshed model went on sale during late spring 2012 with a base price of US$40,395 for a front-wheel drive base model.^[14] For the 2014 model year the base price is US$39,700.^[15]

In 2001 Volvo became the main sponsor of an around-the-world sailing race, now called the Volvo Ocean Race. The 2005 edition was the first in which all competitors used the same boat known as the Volvo Open 70, a 21.5 m (71 ft) racing yacht made for a crew of 10+ and to be robust enough to survive the open ocean.

In early 2006, Volvo released a special version called Ocean Race Edition. Special blue colour, leather interior with contrast stitching and special interior trim.^[16] A total of 800 were made.^[17]

XC Classic[edit]

The first generation Volvo XC90 was sold in China as the XC Classic.^[18] It was produced at the Volvo factory located in Daqing,^[19] Heilongjiang Province, with necessary tooling shipped from Sweden.^[20]
Equipment levels were changed compared to the international versions, and only one engine, a 2.5L turbo petrol 5-cylinder engine^[21] with 220 hp, was available. All XC Classic models came with AWD as standard and either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.^[22] It was priced below the second generation XC90.^[19]

Safety[edit]

The Volvo XC90’s front end is designed to absorb frontal impacts and also deflect any pedestrians up on to the hood of the vehicle rather than underneath the vehicle. Volvo has patented the unique frontal structure that features crumple zones, and predetermined positions for the engine and other ancillaries during a frontal impact.^{[citation needed]}

The XC90’s roof is reinforced with ultra-high-strength steel to help prevent a collapse in the passenger cavity in the event of a roll-over. This Volvo system is marketed as ROPS, and is closely associated with the Roll Stability Control (RSC), electronic stability control (DSTC), and SIPS systems of Volvo to prevent and ultimately minimise accident forces. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration measures the roll-over risk of the 2013 XC90 as 17.9%.^[26] The maximum sideway thrust is 0.77g.^[27]

The XC90’s rear structure has been designed to absorb impact energy, with occupants are also protected by a whiplash protection system. Marketed as WHIPS, the system cradles the occupants during a rear-end collision.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Volvo XC90 their Top Safety Pick award. The XC90 was granted the IIHS’s rating of «good» in front, side, rear and roof strength tests and has Electronic Stability Control as standard equipment to receive the award.^[28]

The industry-first Roll Stability Control was first introduced in XC90 in 2003.^[29][30]

At the end of July 2007, Volvo Car Corp. announced the recall of 42,211 2005 model year XC90s for risk of battery short circuit and fire. The vehicles were manufactured in the Swedish Torslanda Plant between 7 June 2004, and 13 May 2005.^[31] The recall only applies to cars in the US and Canada.^[32] There have been no reports of short circuiting in the vehicles.^{[citation needed]}

In May 2012 Volvo announced that the second generation XC90 would go into production in late 2014, with orders being taken in 2014 and the vehicle officially going on sale in 2015.^[43] The SUV would be sold in Europe, Asia and North America, with the United States expected to account for at least a third of global sales.^[44]

Volvo had begun development of a second generation XC90 using Ford’s EUCD platform under the codename Y305, but was cancelled in 2008 as Ford wouldn’t have enough funds to also facelift the rest of the Volvo lineup.^[45][46][47]

The XC90 is based on Volvo’s new platform, marketed as Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology which features a stronger platform offering weight reduction while improving safety and efficiency.^{[citation needed]}

The vehicle is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor.^[48] All engines in the XC90 are 2.0-litre four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains with Volvo’s eight-speed Geartronic transmission, delivered by Aisin. The line-up include two petrol engines: a twincharged 320 hp (239 kW; 324 PS) T6, producing 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) of torque and a turbocharged 254 hp (189 kW; 258 PS) T5, producing 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft) of torque, two diesel engines: a twin turbo 235 hp (175 kW; 238 PS) D5, producing 470 N⋅m (347 lb⋅ft) of torque and a turbocharged 190 hp (142 kW; 193 PS) D4, producing 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) of torque. The top-of-the-line model is the XC90 T8 Twin Engine, a plug-in hybrid which combines the more powerful petrol engine at the front with an electric motor at the rear to produce 400 hp (298 kW; 406 PS) and 640 N⋅m (472 lb⋅ft) of torque.^[49]

The First Edition of the all-new Volvo XC90, was 1,927 individually numbered cars only available for sale via digital commerce, and sold out in 47 hours after orders opened on 3 September 2014.^[49] All 1,927 of the First Edition models, which could feature either the Petrol T6 or Diesel D5 engine, were finished in Onyx Black and feature 21-inch alloy wheels and include every available vehicle option. The limited production run number represents the year the Swedish brand was launched, with each model fitted with uniquely numbered tread plates and a distinctive rear mounted badge,^[50] with customers able to select their XC90 First Edition numbers. Number 1 was allocated to Carl XVI Gustav, the King of Sweden, with number 10 going to Zlatan Ibrahimović, a Swedish professional footballer.

Design[edit]

The new XC90 has a redesigned chassis with double wishbone front suspension and a new integral link rear axle incorporating transverse leaf spring of lightweight material.^[51][52] The new XC90 can also be equipped with electronically controlled air suspension with a choice of five modes.^[49]

The interior features a 9″ tablet-like touch screen control console along with steering wheel controls and voice-control system, all linked to an interface, marketed as Sensus, which allows for access to cloud-based apps including Internet radio, connected navigation, parking, music streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hot spot for using a tablet in the car. Other features include a gear lever made of Orrefors crystal as well as diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and drive mode control, located on the centre console between the driver and passenger seats.

The highest level audio system in the XC90 features a 1400W Class-D amplifier and 19 Bowers & Wilkins speakers as well as one of the first air-ventilated subwoofers in a car.^{[citation needed]} Integrated into the car body, it turns the entire interior space into a large subwoofer. The latest sound processing software has been used to manage the timing of the sound and co-ordination of the speakers.

The vehicle’s seats have also been redesigned with adjustable side bolsters, seat cushion extension and massage. The second row features three individual seats with recline adjustment. A sliding function can be used to create more legroom for the passengers in the third row or to increase loading space. An integrated child booster cushion in the centre seat is available. The Volvo XC90 seats 5 people in two rows of seating or seats 7 people in three rows of seating. The former was discontinued for the 2018 model year. Second-row captain chairs, which eliminates the centre seat in the 2nd-row and reduces capacity to six people, became optional on the Volvo XC90 for the 2020 model year.

Volvo Cars’ air purification system has been improved by adding a new carbon filter for more efficient capture of small, particles and pollen in the incoming air. The second generation XC90 offers a 360° view system capable of providing the driver with a birds-eye view, whereby information from all cameras is gathered and digitally integrated in a central processor to form a 360° image. The rear sensing system, marketed as Park Assist Pilot, offers automatic reversing into a parking bay.^[49]

The 2nd generation XC90 was the first Volvo to carry the company’s new, more prominent iron mark, which has the iconic arrow aligned with the diagonal metallic slash across the grille,^[53] along with T-shaped LED daytime running lights known as «Thor’s Hammer» by Volvo designers.^[54]

The car is available in five trim levels (Volvo describing it as «expressions»), namely Kinetic (base trim level), Momentum, Inscription (a more luxurious trim), R-design (a sportier trim) and Excellence (ultra-luxury).^[49][55]

Safety[edit]

The Volvo XC90 safety systems include:

• Run-off-road protection package. In a run-off-road scenario, the all-new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. To help prevent Spinal cord injury, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain.^[49]
• City Safety with auto brake in intersections. The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car.^[58] This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher.
• IntelliSafe with City Safety has become the umbrella name for all of Volvo Cars’ auto brake Collision avoidance functions, which are standard equipment in the new XC90. This equipment now covers vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in front of the car during both day and night.
• Adaptive Cruise Control with Pilot Assist traffic jam assistant enables safe and comfortable semi-autonomous driving by automatically following the vehicle ahead in stop-and-go traffic. Acceleration, braking and now also steering are controlled automatically.^[49]

Pilot Assist II model year 2017[edit]

A lane departure warning system includes a semi-autonomous drive technology, Pilot Assist II as standard on the XC90 in selected markets for model year 2017.^[59]

The Volvo brand has also made the claim that «By 2020, nobody shall be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo.»^[60]

Euro NCAP tested a 2015 XC90 (model year 2016), 5-door SUV with standard equipment. Euro NCAP regards the XC90 model as a «best in class» performer.^[61] NHTSA only recorded for rollover.

With over 50,000 vehicles sold in the UK by 2018, no driver or passenger fatality had been recorded.^[65]

T8[edit]

The T8 plug-in hybrid version of the XC90 is based on technology used in the Volvo V60 PHEV.^[44] The batteries, which are situated at the centre of the vehicle, can be charged using an electric vehicle charger and can also store energy recovered by regenerative braking. Volvo says that the XC90 T8 sacrifices no passenger or cargo space to accommodate the hybrid equipment.^[48] However, the tank capacity was reduced to 50 litres (13.2 US gal; 11.0 imp gal)^[66] for 2016-2018 models and the spare tire was removed.

The vehicle emits 49 g/km of CO₂ and has an all-electric range of 43 km (27 mi) under the New European Driving Cycle. Normal driving is conducted in the default hybrid mode, but the driver can switch to a mode that uses only electric power, with zero emission driving.^[67] Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tests, at launch, the XC90 T8 had an all-electric range of 14 miles (23 km), with some gasoline consumption (0.1 gal/100 mi), so the actual all-electric range was rated between 0 to 13 miles (0 to 21 km).^[68]

The EPA, under its five-cycle tests, rated the 2016 model year XC90 T8 energy consumption in all-electric mode at 58 kWh per 100 miles, which translates into a combined city/highway fuel economy of 53 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (4.4 L/100 km (64 mpg_‑imp) gasoline equivalent). When powered only by the gasoline engine, EPA’s official combined city/highway fuel economy is 25 mpg_‑US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg_‑imp).^[68]

At launch, for the 2016 model year, the XC90 T8 used a 9.2 kWh (33 MJ) lithium-ion battery (6.7 kWh (24 MJ) usable).^[69] Over time, Volvo continued to gradually increase the battery size. For the 2018 model year, it was increased to 10.4 kWh (37 MJ) (8.0 kWh (29 MJ) usable);^[70] for the 2020 model year, it was increased to 11.6 kWh (42 MJ);^[71] and for the 2023 model year, it was increased to 18.6 kWh (67 MJ).^[72]

Deliveries of the XC90 T8 PHEV began in the United States in August 2015.^[73] Sales in Europe totaled 2,653 units in 2015.^[74] Cumulative sales in the US totaled 488 units up until February 2016.^[75][76] According to Volvo, sales of the plug-in variant represent 20% of Volvo XC90 global sales by mid-March 2016.^[77]

In 2021 the T8 powertrain was updated with a more powerful electric motor (delivering 107 kW (143 hp; 145 PS)), updated engine and increased battery capacity (18.8 kWh (68 MJ)). ^[78]

Trim levels[edit]

The second-generation Volvo XC90 is available in three distinct trim levels: Momentum, R Design, and Inscription. Momentum is the «base» design, and does not include features such as full leather-trimmed seating surfaces, woodgrain interior trim, or a GPS navigation system as standard equipment. The R Design features «Nubuck» upholstery and a sports exterior body kit, as well as dark trim accents on the exterior and interior. Inscription is the top-of-the-line design, and features full perforated Napa leather-trimmed seating surfaces, woodgrain interior trim, dual heated front and outboard rear seats, and additional bright accents on the exterior. For 2017, an «Excellence» trim was introduced (see below) with the «T8» plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain as standard equipment, as well as additional luxury features.

XC90 T8 Excellence[edit]

For 2017, a new «Excellence» trim level was introduced as a luxury-oriented version of the XC90. The Excellence offered a four-passenger (front/rear) seating configuration, which included rear «lounge» bucket seats that were heated and ventilated. Additional features included the Bowers and Wilkins premium surround-sound audio system with amplifier, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a dual-pane panoramic power moonroof, rear seat entertainment system, and the «T8» plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. There were a limited number of additional options available for the Excellence trim. The Excellence trim was discontinued following the 2020 model year, leaving the Inscription as the top trim level of the XC90.

Facelift (2019)[edit]

In May 2019, for the 2020 model year, the Volvo XC90 received a mid-cycle facelift. The facelift included revised front and rear fascias, a new front grille design, and the previous Excellence trim was discontinued.^[79] For the 2021 model year, the «T8» powertrain was renamed the «XC90 Recharge».

For 2022 models, the base Momentum was replaced with the Core model, the R Design replaced with the Plus model, and the Inscription replaced with the Ultimate. All models include features as standard which were previously cost-extra options.^[80]

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV^[1] manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo’s Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend‘s SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

In January 2001, Volvo débuted its Adventure Concept Car at the North American International Auto Show, to gauge reaction to the styling and features of its upcoming SUV.^[9] In November 2001, Volvo released a teaser image showing the frontal styling of the production version, named the XC90. Notable as Volvo’s first SUV model, the styling of the XC90 recalled the concept.^[10] In January 2002, the full XC90 unveiling occurred, at the North American International Auto Show.^[10] Production began in August 2002, after Volvo’s traditional mid-year shutdown, with the first XC90s coming out of the Torslanda factory in Sweden.^[10]

At its North American launch for the 2003 model year, the XC90 was presented with a choice of two trim levels, the 2.5 T and the T6. The 2.5 T was the entry level version and offered a 2.5-litre B5254T2 «T5» turbocharged inline-five engine, producing 208 hp (155 kW) and 236 lb⋅ft (320 N⋅m) mated to an Aisin co-developed five-speed AW55-50/51 automatic. The T6 offered a 2.9-litre B6294T twin-turbocharged inline-six with 268 hp (200 kW) and 280 lb⋅ft (380 N⋅m) mated to a GM-sourced, Volvo-modified four-speed 4T65EV/GT automatic. While the 2.5T came standard with front-wheel drive, a Haldex Traction all-wheel drive (AWD) system was optional. The T6 was offered only with the AWD system.

A Yamaha V8 engine was added in 2005. This 4.4-litre Volvo B8444S engine produced 288 hp (215 kW) for the first few models later upgraded to^{[citation needed]} 311 hp (232 kW) and 325 lb⋅ft (441 N⋅m) of torque.^[11] Volvo sold just over 40,000 XC90 units in North America that year.^[12]

The XC90 won the North American Car of the Year award and Motor Trend magazine’s Sport/Utility of the Year for 2003.

Jeremy Clarkson, ex-host of Top Gear, has previously owned three XC90s,^[13] and claims they were designed by «someone who must’ve had children due to its practicality.»

Facelifts[edit]

The XC90 was updated for 2007 with a restyled front and rear and a revised interior. The 235 hp (175 kW; 238 PS) 3.2 L SI6 straight-6 engine replaced the 208 hp (155 kW; 211 PS) B524T2 straight-5 in the base model for the US market. The 2007 XC90 debuted in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show.

2009, 2010, and 2012 updates[edit]

For model year (MY) 2009, the XC90 received a new rear logo, featuring larger lettering with wider spaces between the «VOLVO» letters.

In 2010, all XC90 models received painted wheel arches (previously they were optional). In addition, a new, larger, circular Volvo logo appeared on the front grille.

For MY 2012, new LED tail-lights became available on certain models, although entry-level models retain the previous style. For MY 2013, the XC90 received a cosmetic refresh that included standard LED daytime running lights and taillights, and exterior revisions including body colour bumpers, rocker panels and silver trim replacing black plastic trim.

The refreshed model went on sale during late spring 2012 with a base price of US$40,395 for a front-wheel drive base model.^[14] For the 2014 model year the base price is US$39,700.^[15]

In 2001 Volvo became the main sponsor of an around-the-world sailing race, now called the Volvo Ocean Race. The 2005 edition was the first in which all competitors used the same boat known as the Volvo Open 70, a 21.5 m (71 ft) racing yacht made for a crew of 10+ and to be robust enough to survive the open ocean.

In early 2006, Volvo released a special version called Ocean Race Edition. Special blue colour, leather interior with contrast stitching and special interior trim.^[16] A total of 800 were made.^[17]

XC Classic[edit]

The first generation Volvo XC90 was sold in China as the XC Classic.^[18] It was produced at the Volvo factory located in Daqing,^[19] Heilongjiang Province, with necessary tooling shipped from Sweden.^[20]
Equipment levels were changed compared to the international versions, and only one engine, a 2.5L turbo petrol 5-cylinder engine^[21] with 220 hp, was available. All XC Classic models came with AWD as standard and either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.^[22] It was priced below the second generation XC90.^[19]

Safety[edit]

The Volvo XC90’s front end is designed to absorb frontal impacts and also deflect any pedestrians up on to the hood of the vehicle rather than underneath the vehicle. Volvo has patented the unique frontal structure that features crumple zones, and predetermined positions for the engine and other ancillaries during a frontal impact.^{[citation needed]}

The XC90’s roof is reinforced with ultra-high-strength steel to help prevent a collapse in the passenger cavity in the event of a roll-over. This Volvo system is marketed as ROPS, and is closely associated with the Roll Stability Control (RSC), electronic stability control (DSTC), and SIPS systems of Volvo to prevent and ultimately minimise accident forces. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration measures the roll-over risk of the 2013 XC90 as 17.9%.^[26] The maximum sideway thrust is 0.77g.^[27]

The XC90’s rear structure has been designed to absorb impact energy, with occupants are also protected by a whiplash protection system. Marketed as WHIPS, the system cradles the occupants during a rear-end collision.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Volvo XC90 their Top Safety Pick award. The XC90 was granted the IIHS’s rating of «good» in front, side, rear and roof strength tests and has Electronic Stability Control as standard equipment to receive the award.^[28]

The industry-first Roll Stability Control was first introduced in XC90 in 2003.^[29][30]

At the end of July 2007, Volvo Car Corp. announced the recall of 42,211 2005 model year XC90s for risk of battery short circuit and fire. The vehicles were manufactured in the Swedish Torslanda Plant between 7 June 2004, and 13 May 2005.^[31] The recall only applies to cars in the US and Canada.^[32] There have been no reports of short circuiting in the vehicles.^{[citation needed]}

In May 2012 Volvo announced that the second generation XC90 would go into production in late 2014, with orders being taken in 2014 and the vehicle officially going on sale in 2015.^[43] The SUV would be sold in Europe, Asia and North America, with the United States expected to account for at least a third of global sales.^[44]

Volvo had begun development of a second generation XC90 using Ford’s EUCD platform under the codename Y305, but was cancelled in 2008 as Ford wouldn’t have enough funds to also facelift the rest of the Volvo lineup.^[45][46][47]

The XC90 is based on Volvo’s new platform, marketed as Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology which features a stronger platform offering weight reduction while improving safety and efficiency.^{[citation needed]}

The vehicle is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor.^[48] All engines in the XC90 are 2.0-litre four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains with Volvo’s eight-speed Geartronic transmission, delivered by Aisin. The line-up include two petrol engines: a twincharged 320 hp (239 kW; 324 PS) T6, producing 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) of torque and a turbocharged 254 hp (189 kW; 258 PS) T5, producing 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft) of torque, two diesel engines: a twin turbo 235 hp (175 kW; 238 PS) D5, producing 470 N⋅m (347 lb⋅ft) of torque and a turbocharged 190 hp (142 kW; 193 PS) D4, producing 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) of torque. The top-of-the-line model is the XC90 T8 Twin Engine, a plug-in hybrid which combines the more powerful petrol engine at the front with an electric motor at the rear to produce 400 hp (298 kW; 406 PS) and 640 N⋅m (472 lb⋅ft) of torque.^[49]

The First Edition of the all-new Volvo XC90, was 1,927 individually numbered cars only available for sale via digital commerce, and sold out in 47 hours after orders opened on 3 September 2014.^[49] All 1,927 of the First Edition models, which could feature either the Petrol T6 or Diesel D5 engine, were finished in Onyx Black and feature 21-inch alloy wheels and include every available vehicle option. The limited production run number represents the year the Swedish brand was launched, with each model fitted with uniquely numbered tread plates and a distinctive rear mounted badge,^[50] with customers able to select their XC90 First Edition numbers. Number 1 was allocated to Carl XVI Gustav, the King of Sweden, with number 10 going to Zlatan Ibrahimović, a Swedish professional footballer.

Design[edit]

The new XC90 has a redesigned chassis with double wishbone front suspension and a new integral link rear axle incorporating transverse leaf spring of lightweight material.^[51][52] The new XC90 can also be equipped with electronically controlled air suspension with a choice of five modes.^[49]

The interior features a 9″ tablet-like touch screen control console along with steering wheel controls and voice-control system, all linked to an interface, marketed as Sensus, which allows for access to cloud-based apps including Internet radio, connected navigation, parking, music streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hot spot for using a tablet in the car. Other features include a gear lever made of Orrefors crystal as well as diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and drive mode control, located on the centre console between the driver and passenger seats.

The highest level audio system in the XC90 features a 1400W Class-D amplifier and 19 Bowers & Wilkins speakers as well as one of the first air-ventilated subwoofers in a car.^{[citation needed]} Integrated into the car body, it turns the entire interior space into a large subwoofer. The latest sound processing software has been used to manage the timing of the sound and co-ordination of the speakers.

The vehicle’s seats have also been redesigned with adjustable side bolsters, seat cushion extension and massage. The second row features three individual seats with recline adjustment. A sliding function can be used to create more legroom for the passengers in the third row or to increase loading space. An integrated child booster cushion in the centre seat is available. The Volvo XC90 seats 5 people in two rows of seating or seats 7 people in three rows of seating. The former was discontinued for the 2018 model year. Second-row captain chairs, which eliminates the centre seat in the 2nd-row and reduces capacity to six people, became optional on the Volvo XC90 for the 2020 model year.

Volvo Cars’ air purification system has been improved by adding a new carbon filter for more efficient capture of small, particles and pollen in the incoming air. The second generation XC90 offers a 360° view system capable of providing the driver with a birds-eye view, whereby information from all cameras is gathered and digitally integrated in a central processor to form a 360° image. The rear sensing system, marketed as Park Assist Pilot, offers automatic reversing into a parking bay.^[49]

The 2nd generation XC90 was the first Volvo to carry the company’s new, more prominent iron mark, which has the iconic arrow aligned with the diagonal metallic slash across the grille,^[53] along with T-shaped LED daytime running lights known as «Thor’s Hammer» by Volvo designers.^[54]

The car is available in five trim levels (Volvo describing it as «expressions»), namely Kinetic (base trim level), Momentum, Inscription (a more luxurious trim), R-design (a sportier trim) and Excellence (ultra-luxury).^[49][55]

Safety[edit]

The Second Generation Volvo XC90 SUV feature (IntelliSafe), including Run-off-road protection package and Auto brake at intersection.^[56][57]

The Volvo XC90 safety systems include:

• Run-off-road protection package. In a run-off-road scenario, the all-new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. To help prevent Spinal cord injury, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain.^[49]
• City Safety with auto brake in intersections. The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car.^[58] This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher.
• IntelliSafe with City Safety has become the umbrella name for all of Volvo Cars’ auto brake Collision avoidance functions, which are standard equipment in the new XC90. This equipment now covers vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in front of the car during both day and night.
• Adaptive Cruise Control with Pilot Assist traffic jam assistant enables safe and comfortable semi-autonomous driving by automatically following the vehicle ahead in stop-and-go traffic. Acceleration, braking and now also steering are controlled automatically.^[49]

Pilot Assist II model year 2017[edit]

A lane departure warning system includes a semi-autonomous drive technology, Pilot Assist II as standard on the XC90 in selected markets for model year 2017.^[59]

The Volvo brand has also made the claim that «By 2020, nobody shall be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo.»^[60]

Euro NCAP tested a 2015 XC90 (model year 2016), 5-door SUV with standard equipment. Euro NCAP regards the XC90 model as a «best in class» performer.^[61] NHTSA only recorded for rollover.

With over 50,000 vehicles sold in the UK by 2018, no driver or passenger fatality had been recorded.^[65]

T8[edit]

The T8 plug-in hybrid version of the XC90 is based on technology used in the Volvo V60 PHEV.^[44] The batteries, which are situated at the centre of the vehicle, can be charged using an electric vehicle charger and can also store energy recovered by regenerative braking. Volvo says that the XC90 T8 sacrifices no passenger or cargo space to accommodate the hybrid equipment.^[48] However, the tank capacity was reduced to 50 litres (13.2 US gal; 11.0 imp gal)^[66] for 2016-2018 models and the spare tire was removed.

The vehicle emits 49 g/km of CO₂ and has an all-electric range of 43 km (27 mi) under the New European Driving Cycle. Normal driving is conducted in the default hybrid mode, but the driver can switch to a mode that uses only electric power, with zero emission driving.^[67] Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tests, at launch, the XC90 T8 had an all-electric range of 14 miles (23 km), with some gasoline consumption (0.1 gal/100 mi), so the actual all-electric range was rated between 0 to 13 miles (0 to 21 km).^[68]

The EPA, under its five-cycle tests, rated the 2016 model year XC90 T8 energy consumption in all-electric mode at 58 kWh per 100 miles, which translates into a combined city/highway fuel economy of 53 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (4.4 L/100 km (64 mpg_‑imp) gasoline equivalent). When powered only by the gasoline engine, EPA’s official combined city/highway fuel economy is 25 mpg_‑US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg_‑imp).^[68]

At launch, for the 2016 model year, the XC90 T8 used a 9.2 kWh (33 MJ) lithium-ion battery (6.7 kWh (24 MJ) usable).^[69] Over time, Volvo continued to gradually increase the battery size. For the 2018 model year, it was increased to 10.4 kWh (37 MJ) (8.0 kWh (29 MJ) usable);^[70] for the 2020 model year, it was increased to 11.6 kWh (42 MJ);^[71] and for the 2023 model year, it was increased to 18.6 kWh (67 MJ).^[72]

Deliveries of the XC90 T8 PHEV began in the United States in August 2015.^[73] Sales in Europe totaled 2,653 units in 2015.^[74] Cumulative sales in the US totaled 488 units up until February 2016.^[75][76] According to Volvo, sales of the plug-in variant represent 20% of Volvo XC90 global sales by mid-March 2016.^[77]

In 2021 the T8 powertrain was updated with a more powerful electric motor (delivering 107 kW (143 hp; 145 PS)), updated engine and increased battery capacity (18.8 kWh (68 MJ)). ^[78]

Trim levels[edit]

The second-generation Volvo XC90 is available in three distinct trim levels: Momentum, R Design, and Inscription. Momentum is the «base» design, and does not include features such as full leather-trimmed seating surfaces, woodgrain interior trim, or a GPS navigation system as standard equipment. The R Design features «Nubuck» upholstery and a sports exterior body kit, as well as dark trim accents on the exterior and interior. Inscription is the top-of-the-line design, and features full perforated Napa leather-trimmed seating surfaces, woodgrain interior trim, dual heated front and outboard rear seats, and additional bright accents on the exterior. For 2017, an «Excellence» trim was introduced (see below) with the «T8» plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain as standard equipment, as well as additional luxury features.

XC90 T8 Excellence[edit]

For 2017, a new «Excellence» trim level was introduced as a luxury-oriented version of the XC90. The Excellence offered a four-passenger (front/rear) seating configuration, which included rear «lounge» bucket seats that were heated and ventilated. Additional features included the Bowers and Wilkins premium surround-sound audio system with amplifier, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a dual-pane panoramic power moonroof, rear seat entertainment system, and the «T8» plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. There were a limited number of additional options available for the Excellence trim. The Excellence trim was discontinued following the 2020 model year, leaving the Inscription as the top trim level of the XC90.

Facelift (2019)[edit]

In May 2019, for the 2020 model year, the Volvo XC90 received a mid-cycle facelift. The facelift included revised front and rear fascias, a new front grille design, and the previous Excellence trim was discontinued.^[79] For the 2021 model year, the «T8» powertrain was renamed the «XC90 Recharge».

For 2022 models, the base Momentum was replaced with the Core model, the R Design replaced with the Plus model, and the Inscription replaced with the Ultimate. All models include features as standard which were previously cost-extra options.^[80]

Volvo XC90 — внедорожник SUV (также позиционируется как кроссовер)^[1][2], производящийся шведской компанией Volvo Cars. Впервые показан на Детройтском автосалоне 2002 года. Основан на платформе P2, на которой также основан Volvo S80 и другие большие автомобили Volvo.

В 2009 году XC90 получил немного другой логотип на двери багажника. С 2010 года XC90 имеет окрашенные колёсные арки (раньше это было опцией). В 2012 году XC90 получил новые передние фары и задние фонари, бамперы, окрашенные в цвет кузова, боковые молдинги. Все изменения носят косметический характер.

XC Classic (2014)

XC90 первого поколения по-прежнему продаётся в Китае как XC Classic с 2014 года. Вместо семи кресел у автомобиля только четыре. Завод, где выпускают автомобиль, находится в Дацин, Хэйлунцзян.^[3]

Второе поколение

Первоначально планировалось, что новое поколение выйдет в 2009—2010 годах,^[6] но из-за того, что Volvo Cars продали китайской Geely, разработку пришлось отложить.^[7]

Второе поколение было представлено 26 августа 2014 года^[8]. Серийное производство стартовало в начале февраля 2015 года на заводе в Гётеборге (последний XC90 первого поколения был собран на заводе летом 2014 года). Первые машины клиенты получили в конце весны 2015 года. Была выпущена специальная серия First Edition в количестве 1927 автомобилей в честь года основания Volvo. Серия была продана через интернет в течение 47 часов в начале сентября 2014 года^[9]. В специальной серии каждый автомобиль имел свой номер (от 1 до 1927), который могли выбрать клиенты при заказе.

По итогам 2015 года во всём мире был продан 40 621 новый XC90. Автомобиль получил премию «Североамериканский внедорожник» 2016 года (вручается жюри из независимых журналистов), повторив успех первого поколения в 2003 года. Также новый XC90 получил премию Euro NCAP как лучший автомобиль в своём классе^[10].

Volvo XC90 – первый кроссовер от шведского бренда. Он же является самым крупным и самым дорогим в модельном ряду.

Первое поколение представили в 2002 году. Кроссовер хорошо продавался, прошел через несколько рестайлингов и производился рекордно долго (после выхода нового поколения он еще некоторое время выпускался в Китае под названием XC Classic).

Долгожданное второе поколение показали в 2014 году – производство началось в 2015-м. Это был первый «Вольво» на модульной платформе SPA с абсолютно новой внешностью и новым салоном.

В 2019 году Volvo XC90 II получил скромное обновление. Немного изменились бампер и решетка радиатора, появились новые комплектации. В России кроссовер продавался неплохо, поэтому на вторичном рынке есть из чего выбрать.

СКОЛЬКО СТОИТ VOLVO XC90 2 ПОКОЛЕНИЯ

Сейчас на вторичке продается более 400 экземпляров «Вольво ХС90» 2-го поколения. Самые дешевые кроссоверы стоят чуть больше 2 млн рублей, а самые дорогие – больше 10 млн рублей.

В августе, по данным сервиса проверки и подбора авто «Автокод», модель проверили 1 378 раз. Большая часть машин продавалась с долгами по штрафам – 1 026 единиц. У 20 авто было ДТП, 8 машин числилось в залоге, 6 – в лизинге и у четырех ХС 90 имелись ограничения на регистрацию в ГИБДД.

Для интереса я пробил через «Автокод» машину с доски объявлений.

Владелец пишет, что авто продается после одного владельца. ДТП не было, все ТО у официального дилера, родной окрас, идеальное состояние и проч. Единственный изъян – трещина на лобовом стекле.

«Автокод» подтвердил слова собственника. Из проблем отобразились только расчеты ремонтных работ.

Калькуляции производились как раз-таки по замене лобового стекла.

И таких авто – с незначительными проблемами, а то и вовсе без проблем – продается много. Однако покупка авто не гарантирует безоблачной эксплуатации – ХС90 может подкинуть неожиданные сюрпризы.

В сегодняшнем посте я расскажу, с какими проблемами и неисправностями можно столкнуться при эксплуатации Volvo XC90 II, во сколько обойдется их устранение и что вызывает недовольство у владельцев.

С ЧЕМ ПРОДАЕТСЯ VOLVO XC90 II

Все Volvo XC90 2-го поколения продавались только с двухлитровыми турбомоторами. Никаких пяти- или шестицилиндровых агрегатов, а тем более мотора V8, у него нет.

В Россию кроссовер официально поставлялся в четырех версиях:

• бензиновый T5 (249 л. с.);
• бензиновый T6 (320 л. с.);
• дизельный D5 (235 л. с.);
• подзаряжаемый гибрид T8 (407 л. с.).

После рестайлинга появилась новая модификация с индексом B5. Так назывались машины, получившие систему мягкого гибрида (стартер-генератор помогает эффективнее разгоняться и экономить топливо). Мощность осталась на прежнем уровне. Гибрид T8 позже переименовали в Recharge.

Дизельная версия D5 менее надежная, чем бензиновые агрегаты. Часто владельцы сталкиваются с ремонтом системы Power Pulse, которая призвана устранять эффект турбоямы (слабый разгон на низких оборотах двигателя). В специальный резервуар компрессор нагнетает воздух и в нужный момент подает его для более эффективной раскрутки турбины. Патрубок зачастую не выдерживает давления и рвется, иногда его просто срывает с крепления.

Оригинал обойдется примерно в 25 тыс. рублей, но проблему можно решить дешевле. Примерно за 10 тыс. рублей ставится неоригинальный шланг, который будет даже прочнее оригинального. Теоретически можно вообще ничего не делать: система не сильно влияет на ходовые качества, ошибок на панели приборов не будет, но лучше проконсультироваться со специалистами сервиса.

В обновленной дизельной модификации B5 от системы Power Pulse отказались вовсе.

У дизельных Volvo XC90 бывают проблемы с клапаном EGR (система рециркуляции отработанных газов). Если его не чистить периодически (примерно раз в 30 тыс. км), то придется менять весь механизм (около 50 тыс. рублей). Долговечностью не отличается и металлическая трубка, которая идет к самому клапану (30 тыс. рублей).

На сравнительно небольших пробегах (иногда это 100-120 тыс. км) нередко ломается турбина. Новая стоит дорого – порядка 200-300 тыс. рублей за оригинал. Можно попробовать реанимировать старую либо купить восстановленную – это будет кратно дешевле.

У некоторых машин начинает течь масло из-под клапанной крышки (новая стоит около 35 тыс. рублей). В этом случае требуется переуплотнить соединение.

Бывает, на небольших пробегах выходит из строя катализатор. Если его не успели заменить по гарантии, новый обойдется примерно в 200 тыс. рублей.

У бензиновых моторов Volvo XC90 слабых мест, как я уже сказал, заметно меньше. Бывают проблемы с кислородным датчиком (15-25 тыс. рублей) и турбокомпрессором (200 тыс. рублей за новый и 40-50 тыс. за восстановленный).

К восьмиступенчатой автоматической коробке передач Aisin и системе полного привода нареканий нет.

НАСКОЛЬКО КОМФОРТНО В САЛОНЕ VOLVO XC90 II

В плане опций все Volvo XC90 II оснащены хорошо, пустых комплектаций просто нет. В салоне кожаная отделка, вставки из алюминия или дерева, два цифровых экрана, пять или семь мест на выбор.

В дорогих комплектациях есть:

• четырехзонный климат-контроль;
• проекция;
• массаж сидений;
• пневмоподвеска;
• и даже отделанный хрусталем селектор коробки передач.

В целом салон XC90 удобен. Привыкания требует сенсорный центральный экран (9 дюймов). В него зашито управление практически всеми настройками автомобиля. Чтобы поменять температуру в салоне, нужно воспользоваться экраном, что не очень удобно, особенно на ходу. Плюс, экран очень маркий, как и глянцевая панель вокруг него.

Материалы салона качественные, но презентабельный вид теряют быстро. Отделка дверей затирается даже на небольших пробегах. Кожа на руле и сиденьях нежная и подвержена быстрому износу, что особенно заметно у машин со светлым салоном.

С КАКИМИ ПРОБЛЕМАМИ МОЖНО СТОЛКНУТЬСЯ ПРИ ЭКСПЛУАТАЦИИ VOLVO XC90 II

Обзоры про Volvo XC90 II встречаются самые разные. Одни владельцы без особых нареканий проезжают по 150 тыс. км, другие на меньших пробегах ремонтируют авто по несколько раз. В любом случае к надежности кроссовера есть вопросы.

Чаще всего встречаются следующие неисправности Volvo XC90:

• Замена оптики по гарантии. Сами фары светят отлично, но у них есть склонность к запотеванию. Обычно это происходит из-за трещин, которые появляются от контакта фары с бампером (его впоследствии модернизировали). Если повреждения небольшие, может помочь герметизация. Замена в любом случае обойдется недешево, даже за восстановленную фару просят от 25 до 90 тыс. рублей.

• Выход из строя блока управления VCM (Vehicle Connectivity Module). Это сопровождается самыми разными ошибками. Может перестать работать навигация, Bluetooth или система Volvo on Call (помощь на дороге и управление функциями автомобиля со смартфона). Новый блок дорогой – порядка 300 тыс. рублей. В 2019 году по VCM проводилась отзывная кампания.

• Проблемы с электрикой зимой. Влага с салонного коврика просачивается под педаль газа, из-за чего контакты разъемов постепенно окисляются. Машина начинает глючить (например, невозможно ее заглушить), на панели приборов выскакивают ошибки. На сервисе предлагают сделать герметизацию или перенести сам блок выше, чтобы на него не попадала вода.

• Проблемы с пневмоподвеской, возникающие из-за попадания влаги. Из-за этого, например, может максимально подняться вверх или, наоборот, упасть кузов автомобиля. Может помочь простая чистка насоса (около 5 тыс. рублей), но, если проблема серьезная, новый компрессор потянет примерно на 200 тыс. рублей.

• Поломки замка рулевой колонки SCL. Кроссовер перестает заводиться при работающей панели приборов. Замок можно отключить либо поменять на новый за 20-40 тыс. рублей.

• Проблемы с замками задних дверей (чаще всего с левой стороны) в холодное время года. В механизмы попадает вода, после чего двери просто не получается открыть или закрыть, пока машина не прогреется. Можно попробовать разобрать и смазать замки либо купить новые (22-30 тыс. рублей за штуку).

У ХС90 бывают и другие глюки с электрикой: перестает работать электронный стояночный тормоз, машина может не заводиться из-за неплотного прилегания клемм стартера, выскакивают ошибки по подушкам безопасности (обычно помогает чистка замка ремня безопасности).

СТОИТ ЛИ ПОКУПАТЬ VOLVO XC90 II

Из-за большого количества болячек ХС90 сложно назвать образцово надежным кроссовером. Хорошо, если их успели устранить по гарантии. Если нет, ремонт может вылиться в ощутимую сумму (особенно это касается дизельных машин). И с этой точки зрения покупка шведского кроссовера не выглядит такой уж привлекательной.

С другой стороны, у автомобиля немало плюсов:

• хорошее оснащение;
• солидный дизайн;
• престиж бренда;
• безопасность, которой так славятся автомобили Volvo.

Если автомобиль вам нравится, лучше присмотреться к машинам от 2016-2017 года. В первое время у Volvo XC90 2 было немало разных неисправностей, из-за чего проводились отзывные кампании.

Автомобили Volvo мне всегда нравились. Это те машины, которые абсолютно не напрягают. И не важно, несусь ли я под 200 по автобану, еду по извилистой скользкой дороге или торчу в пробке — в Volvo мне всегда комфортно и удобно. Но это всё — про легковые модели. А что получится, если применить философию Volvo к внедорожнику? Ответ мы знаем — получится XC90.

Машина эта, в принципе, не новая, написано и сказано о ней немало. Да и в городском потоке XC90 уже давно примелькался. Но мне всё равно было интересно поездить на нетипичной (до последнего времени) для Volvo машине. Хотя, если посмотреть на её начинку, то видно, что для создания XC90 специалистам компании почти ничего не пришлось изобретать. Полный привод был, турбомоторы — тоже. Так что не сделать автомобиль нового, набирающего всё большую популярность класса кроссоверов Volvo просто не могла.

В салоне XC90 всё так привычно, что совсем не ощущаешь себя за рулём внедорожника. Скорее, кажется, что ты сидишь в некоей помеси моделей S60 и S80 (уже предыдущего поколения). Интерьер — практически такой же, как у них. Но вот управляется этот гигант совсем по-другому — сказываются более мягкая и длинноходная подвеска, плюс высокий центр тяжести.

Это значит, что если ехать на ХС90 как на обычной легковушке (а я привык именно так), то ничего, кроме раздражения, не получишь. Закладывая автомобиль в поворот, отмечаешь, что усилия на деревянном руле никакого нет, и траекторию приходится строить буквально на ощупь. И ладно бы только это! Так ведь в повороте надо ещё умудриться не выскочить из скользкого и почти лишённого боковой поддержки кожаного сиденья — телу катастрофически не хватает опоры. Плюс, каждое более-менее интенсивное торможение или разгон сопровождается клевками и бурчанием пассажиров: «Кажется, меня укачало». И дело не в том, что я гонщик-отморозок, для которого существуют только два режима — «газ в пол» и «тормоз в пол». На легковом автомобиле всё было бы нормально — там и крены, и раскачка куда слабее. Да и другие внедорожники вели себя лучше. Дурацкая машина! Или, может, я что-то делаю неправильно?

«Спокойствие, только спокойствие!» — напомнил я себе девиз знаменитого земляка Volvo XC90. Раз не получается ехать как обычно, будем приспосабливаться. Во-первых, отныне всегда держим такую дистанцию, что даже если впередиидущая машина резко затормозит, нам с пассажирами не пришлось бы играть в игру «у кого вестибулярный аппарат лучше». Хорошо ещё, что перед нами не будет пытаться влезть каждый второй: «выражение морды» у XC90 хоть и интеллигентное, но внушающее уважение, вставать на его пути осмелится не каждый. Но если уж кто полезет, да ещё и с поворотником, — обязательно пропустим. Зачем лишний раз дёргаться?

И в повороты надо заходить помедленнее: всё-таки высокий и тяжёлый автомобиль лучше выглядит на прямой, чем на дуге. А если спешим? Ничего страшного, что в повороте мы чуть-чуть отстанем: когда Volvo XC90 выйдет на «оперативный простор», он наверстает упущенное. Даже базовый 210-сильный турбомотор тянет очень прилично. А версии T6 и V8, думается, будут куда быстрее. Что, всё равно не успеваем? Вставать надо раньше! Или выбирать другой автомобиль. Правда, вряд ли этот «другой автомобиль» сможет вас доставить до места назначения с тем же комфортом.

Хотя мне хватало и пяти цилиндров, благо «автомат» у XC90 работает адекватно и совсем не мешает им работать на полную. Он, кстати, тоже настроен так, чтобы плавное управление было максимально удобным, но при этом и ускориться в случае чего можно было без задержек. Если продавить педаль менее чем наполовину, автомобиль начнёт ускоряться без перехода на более низкую передачу, что очень удобно, если ты хочешь разогнаться быстро, но без рывка, сопутствующего понижению ступени. Далее следует ступенька по усилию, после которой мы развязываем коробке руки, и она может перейти вниз. Но, опять же, довольно плавно. А если резко нажать педаль до упора, то машина действительно «пульнёт», наплевав на покой пассажиров. Довольно необычно, но когда привыкнешь, оказывается, что очень удобно. Главное — не запутаться во всех этих положениях педали. А вот педаль тормоза настроена как раз так, что к ней приходится привыкать и приспосабливаться, — уж слишком резко она схватывает. Видимо, шведы решили сделать это «на всякий случай» — мол, лучше перетормозить, чем недотормозить. Главное, чтобы в момент торможения сзади не оказался какой-нибудь любитель «повисеть на хвосте», — иначе Volvo XC90 быстро отучит его это делать.

Но, приспособившись к спокойному стилю вождения, начинаешь ловить от этой машины кайф. Да, разгоняться на ней лучше только по прямой, да, резких телодвижений за рулём лучше не совершать. Но если ехать плавно, то наградой становится воистину царский комфорт. Ты сидишь в «плоских» креслах, словно на троне. И начинаешь понимать, что хотя сиденья XC90 и не держат тебя, как тиски, зато в них можно устроиться так, как тебе удобно. А сзади перестаёт доноситься ворчание пассажиров. Вокруг — сплошь кожа, дерево, мягкий пластик. Так и едем: быстро или медленно, но всегда — очень плавно, без малейшей суеты. Что ж, развалимся поудобнее в кресле и послушаем музыку. Ого, да XC90 превратил меня в настоящего Volvo-драйвера! К слову, легковые модели шведской фирмы никогда не навязывали мне такого стиля вождения. А в XC90 мне пришлось к нему привыкнуть. И знаете что — мне понравилось!

В движении Volvo XC90 очень напоминает корабль или яхту. Он будто бы плывёт над дорогой — спокойно, уверенно, слегка покачиваясь на волнах асфальта. За тем лишь исключением, что «плавать» он умеет только по дорогам. Но зато это он делает весьма уверенно. Главное — плавно работать «штурвалом» и педалями — иначе пассажирам не избежать приступа морской болезни.

И, кстати, пусть вас не вводит в заблуждение внушительный клиренс Volvo XC90: в грязь на нём лучше не соваться. Ведь в обычных условиях на переднюю ось подаётся аж 95% тяги, а значит, на бездорожье автомобиль будет выглядеть не лучшим образом. Вискомуфта подключит задние колёса в тот момент, когда передние уже успеют надёжно «окопаться» в земле. С другой стороны, если верить русской поговорке про «крутизну» джипов, за трактором вам, в случае чего, далеко идти не придётся — метров 20—30 от силы. Но XC90 и не пытается «косить» под настоящие вездеходы, его стихия — городские бордюры и сельские дороги, благо с геометрической проходимостью проблем не возникает. А на все остальные типы препятствий интеллигентный XC90 не обращает внимания. В смысле, предпочитает не лазить, куда не надо.

Итак, XC90 — это автомобиль для бескомпромиссного Volvo-драйвера. Чтобы получать от езды удовольствие, надо вести машину именно так, как она к тому располагает. То есть спокойно и плавно, позволяя себе «торопиться» исключительно на прямых участках дороги. Иначе вы начнёте жаловаться на крены и клевки кузова, на аморфные сиденья и «пустой» руль, а задние пассажиры будут ездить туда-сюда по кожаному дивану и постоянно просить вас остановиться подышать свежим воздухом. Но если вам удастся приспособиться к автомобилю, он вам обязательно понравится. В этом — весь Volvo XC90: вы обязательно поменяете либо стиль вождения, либо автомобиль.
