Leroy Merlin (French: [ləʁwa mɛʁlɛ̃]) is a French-headquartered home improvement and gardening retailer serving several countries in Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa. Leroy Merlin is owned by the Mulliez family, which also owns Auchan.

In 1923, Adolphe Leroy and Rose Merlin, associates in private and business life,[clarification needed] opened a business of American surplus. Strengthened by this first success, they decided to sell DIY products and supplies at moderate prices. In 1960, the firm was named Leroy Merlin. It became a precursor, as it was the first company to offer free delivery services.[1]
Generally established on the outskirts of major towns and cities, Leroy Merlin stores are large centres (9000 m2 on average) providing self-service and sales assisted services. Its business is centred on six main sectors: DIY, building, gardening, sanitary equipment, renewable energy, and interior decoration.[2]
Controversies[edit]
Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, many international, particularly Western, companies pulled out of Russia. Leroy Merlin, however, on 11 March announced that it has no plans to reduce its operations in Russia, where it operates 143 stores.[3] On 17 March they cut off the Ukrainian office from corporate communications and stated that they would increase supplies to the Russian Federation.[4]
Leroy Merlin has a strong presence in Russia and generates 18% of its turnover there.[5] In 2020 the company paid $335 million in taxes as a result of their operations in Russia. The company has been criticized for making indirect contributions to the Russian military effort.[6]
On the night of 20-21 March 2022, a shopping centre in Kyiv housing a Leroy Merlin shop was bombed. Shop employees called on the company to leave Russia,[7] as did the Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko. The latter, elected in the constituency of Odessa and member of the Ukrainian delegation to the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe, broadcast a video.[8] The video was shot in front of the devastated store.
In a statement to AFP, Adeo, Leroy Merlin’s holding company, said a closure would be considered a «premeditated bankruptcy»[9] and says that it has an «employer’s responsibility towards (its) 45,000 employees and their families who have been contributing to the building of Leroy Merlin Russia for the past 18 years». However, there are reports of insults and threats from customers following the company’s continued operations in Russia.[10]

История
История компании берёт начало с 1923 года, когда Нё-ле-Мин. Адольф Леруа и Роз Мерлен, партнеры в жизни и в бизнесе, открыли торговое предприятие по реализации излишков американской армии. Вдохновленные первым успехом, они принимают решение продавать строительные материалы и мебель по доступным ценам. В 1960 году торговое предприятие «Сток Америкен» («Au Stock Americain») переименовывается в Leroy Merlin. Склады организуются по секциям (строительство, столярные изделия, материалы, мебель, небольшой отдел сантехнических изделий).

В 1966 году в Нё-ле-Мин был открыт первый универсальный магазин самообслуживания, специализирующийся на товарах для дома, строительства и ремонта.
В 1980 году контрольный пакет компании купила семья Мюлье, владеющая сетью гипермаркетов Auchan. 1989 год ознаменовался выходом на европейский рынок с открытием первого магазина за рубежом в Леганесе (Испания, район Мадрида) под вывеской L&M. В 1994 году начата деятельность в Италии и в Польше, выкуплен фирменный знак Брикоман (Bricoman), лидера среди супермаркетов DIY в Бельгии.
В 1998 году — начало деятельности в Бразилии, в 2004 году открылся первый «Леруа» в России (в районе Мытищ Московской области). В том же 2004 году открылся первый магазин сети в Китае.
В 2006 году группа Leroy Merlin переименована в Groupe Adeo.

Общая численность персонала — свыше 35 тыс. человек (2005). Оборот компании за 2005 — 6,57 млрд евро.
Leroy Merlin в России
В 2004 году Leroy Merlin открыла первый магазин в Мытищах. Сейчас (август 2009) гипермаркеты этой сети действуют в Москве и Московской области. В конце 2007 — начале 2008 компания открыла свои гипермаркеты в Санкт-Петербурге, Краснодаре, Ростове-на-Дону, Самаре и Новосибирске. В 2009 году компания открыла магазин в Омске, в 2010 году — в Воронеже (30.07.2010), Климовске (28.12.2010). Позже были открыты магазины в Самаре, Уфе (25.05.2011) и Красноярске (07.02.2012)[1][2][3].
Leroy Merlin на Украине
Первый строительный гипермаркет Leroy Merlin открыт в Киеве на улице Полярной, 17а (Оболонский район) 18 ноября 2010 года[4]. Кроме того, в октябре 2010-го директор по развитию Leroy Merlin Ukraine Алексей Ревин заявил о планах открытия второго гипермаркета сети в Киеве в 2011-м[5].
