The Volkswagen Touareg (German pronunciation: [ˈtuːaʁɛk]) is a car produced by German automaker Volkswagen Group since 2002 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant. A five-seater mid-size luxury crossover SUV, the vehicle was named after the nomadic Tuareg people, inhabitants of the Saharan interior in North Africa.^[1] As of its first generation, the Touareg was developed together with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, and as of October 2020, the Touareg was developed together with the Audi Q8, the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus. The vehicles were designed as unibody SUVs with independent suspensions. The initial generation (2002–2010) offered five-, six-, eight-, ten- and twelve-cylinder engine choices depending on choice.

Development[edit]

The Volkswagen Touareg (internally designated Typ 7L) was developed as a joint venture project by Porsche and the Volkswagen Group, involving the Audi and Volkswagen brands. At the time of Typ 7L development and for the first several years of production, Porsche was independently owned and not yet a part of the Volkswagen group. The sports car market fluctuates, and Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking was looking to expand into new segments; this included marketing its first four-door vehicle. A team in Weissach, Germany, of over 300, led by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert, developed the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Now it is shared between the Touareg, the Audi Q7, and the Porsche Cayenne. However, there are styling, equipment, performance, and technical differences between them. The Touareg and Cayenne both seat five, while the Q7’s stretched wheelbase accommodates a third row for seven passengers.

The Volkswagen Touareg is built at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Audi Q7. The Cayenne is assembled by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany, at a facility built for Cayenne production.

Due to the demand and the exchange rates of euros against the US dollar, as well as different pricing and environmental policies in the US, the V6 and V8 engine variants make up most of Volkswagen’s American Touareg offering. Compared to other Volkswagen-branded vehicles sold in the US, which are aimed at the mass market, Touaregs came in more upscale trims and competed with other luxury crossover SUVs.^[2][3]

The Touareg comes as standard with a 4motion four-wheel drive system. It has an automatic progressively locking centre differential (with manual override) and a «low range» setting that can be activated with in-cabin controls. The Touareg featured an optional 4-wheel active air suspension, which can raise the ride height on command, and a locking rear differential to increase off-road capability.^[4] A rare option was a front-locking differential. Its load level ground clearance is at 6.3 in (160 mm), Off-Road Level is at 9.6 in (244 mm), and extra clearance of 11.8 in (300 mm).^[5]

W12 (2005–2010)[edit]

The 6.0-litre double overhead camshaft (DOHC), 48-valve W12 engine version was initially intended to be a limited-edition model, with just 500 units planned to be produced; around 330 were slated for sale in Saudi Arabia, with the remainder sold in Europe. Some of those W12 Touaregs were sold in China, but the number sold is unknown. No sales were made in the United States. Eventually, the W12 model became an ordinary model without any production restrictions. It is estimated to reach 100 kilometres per hour (62.1 mph) in 5.9 seconds.^[6]

V10 TDI (2002–2008)[edit]

The V10 TDI was offered in the United States for a limited time in 2004, but emissions regulations forced it off the market temporarily.^[7]

The V10 TDI returned to the U.S. market as a 2006 model-year vehicle in five states. Later US models went on sale in 2006, which was compliant with 50 states emission with Ultra-low sulphur diesel and particulate filter.^[8] Stricter California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards resulted in the V10 TDI being reduced to only 43 state emissions in 2008^[9] before being cancelled again in the United States.^[10] The V10 engine was replaced by a V6 TDI engine that met the CARB minimum emission requirements for the 2009 model year.

Fifth Gear used this version for testing to tow a Boeing 747.

Facelift (2006-2010)[edit]

The Touareg’s first facelift was unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show,^[11] with its North American debut at the 2007 New York Auto Show as a 2008 model.^[12] It now features the shield grille styling shared with other vehicles in the Volkswagen range. The updated Touareg has more than 2300 redesigned parts and boasts some new technological features:

• ABS Plus, which works in conjunction with the traction control system and shortens the braking distance by up to 25% on loose surfaces;
• Front Scan, an adaptive cruise control system which can slow or even stop the car depending on traffic conditions;
• Side Scan, a blind-spot monitor: it uses radar at the rear of the car to sense another car’s presence and causes light-emitting diodes (LEDs) built into the wing mirrors to flash. If the driver indicates to move out, the LEDs flash at an accelerated rate to warn the driver until the other vehicle moves out of the Touareg’s field of vision.

The 2007 Touareg, alongside an already lengthy options list, could be equipped with a driving dynamics package, a rollover sensor, a 620-watt Dynaudio sound system, and redesigned comfort seats. All diesel versions now have the diesel particulate filter standard.^[13]

In the US and Canada, the face-lifted Touareg was marketed as the Touareg 2 for the 2008–2010 model years, reverting to simply Touareg in 2011.

R50 (2007–2010)[edit]

The Touareg R50 is the third Volkswagen after the Golf and Passat to be given the ‘R’ treatment by Volkswagen Individual GmbH. The R50 global launch was at the 2007 Australian International Motor Show.

The «R50» naming comes from the engine displacement: 5.0 L. The R50 was offered with a 5.0-litre V10 diesel engine that produces 257 kW (349 PS; 345 bhp) and 850 N⋅m (627 lbf⋅ft) of torque, pushing the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 6.7 seconds.^[14]

The R50 came standard with 21-inch Omanyt wheels, sport-tuned air suspension, decorative ‘engine spin’ finish interior trim inlays, and an optional four-zone Climatronic climate control system.

V6 TDI (2007–2010)[edit]

The 2007 version of the V6 TDI has 239 PS (176 kW; 236 hp) and 500 N⋅m (369 lbf⋅ft) of torque. With this engine, the Touareg can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 8.3 seconds.^[15]

V6 TDI Clean Diesel (2009–2016)[edit]

The V6 TDI Clean Diesel featuring Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system replaced the V10 TDI in US and Canada. The Touareg contains a 4.5 US gallons (17 l; 3.7 imp gal) tank in the rear of the vehicle underneath the spare tyre, which stores the AdBlue solution. It is estimated that this tank will need to be replenished every 6,000–10,000 miles (9,700–16,100 km).^{[citation needed]} The Touareg does not include the NOX storage catalyst found in Jetta Clean Diesel TDI due to its heavy weight.^[16]

The Touareg BlueTDI was unveiled at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.^[17] The production version of the V6 TDI Clean Diesel was unveiled at the 2008 LA Auto Show.^[18]

Sander Kuiken, Technical development diesel application, Volkswagen AG, was one of the engineers that worked on the AdBlue system created by Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Kuiken talked about the difference between the VW Touareg diesel and gasoline vehicles.^[19]

Touareg «Lux Limited» (2009)[edit]

The Touareg «Lux Limited» is a version of the V6 TDI Clean Diesel (225PS), V6 FSI, and V8 FSI for the US market. It features 20-inch alloy wheels («Mountain» type) with size 275 all-season tires and a choice of 4 body colours (Sapphire Blue, Black Magic Pearl, Campanella White, and Galapagos Gray). It also came equipped with a full body colour aerodynamics kit, dual power front seats, full Cricket two-tone leather interior, touch screen navigation with streaming Bluetooth audio, 320-watt 11-speaker audio system, and adaptive high-intensity discharge headlamps.

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2009 NAIAS.^[20]

Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid (2009)[edit]

The Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid is a prototype hybrid vehicle featuring a 2,995 cc (182.8 cu in) V6 petrol engine with a ‘Twin Vortices Series’ (TVS) supercharger rated at 333 PS (245 kW; 328 bhp) at 5,500 rpm and 440 N⋅m (325 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 3,000 rpm, an electric motor rated at 52 PS (38 kW; 51 bhp) and 300 N⋅m (220 lbf⋅ft) of torque and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It has combined ratings of 374 PS (275 kW; 369 bhp) and 550 N⋅m (406 lbf⋅ft) of torque. The electric motor is powered by a 240-cell, 288 V, 6 Ah nickel metal-hydride battery array. The 4motion four-wheel drive system utilised a lighter Torsen centre differential from the Audi Q7 to save weight. The electric motor has a top speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). Start-stop system supports regenerative braking, and coasting. Power steering and air conditioning were changed to be powered by battery.

The planned production version included a special E-switch that the driver can activate for pure electric driving, 160 km/h (99 mph) coasting speed.^[21]

Marketing[edit]

In Canada and the US, ads showed the Touareg capable of feats that other Volkswagen cars could not accomplish, such as going right through a snowbank while a New Beetle got stuck.

A 2007 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI pulled a Boeing 747 as part of an advertising campaign, which holds the world record for the heaviest load towed by a passenger car.^[22]

In 2007 Día de los Innocents, Volkswagen Spain’s website, showed a fake Touareg Cabrio convertible. The site was registered to VW’s Spanish division.^[23]

As part of the Touareg 2 launch campaign coinciding with the premier of The Bourne Ultimatum movie, Volkswagen launched an interactive stunt simulator that allowed fans to play out their own stunts online. Users could maneuver any of six different VW models through various explosions, while altering vehicle speeds, props, sound effects, and camera angles to make that perfect scene.^[24]

The second generation (Typ 7P) Touareg was revealed on February 10, 2010, in Munich^[26] and later at the 2010 Beijing International Auto Show.^[27]

The new Touareg features a world-first automotive headlight technology: the «Dynamic Light Assist» glare-free high beam.^[26] Unlike an adaptive high-beam system, the Dynamic Light Assist system continually and gradually adjusts not only the high-beam range but also its pattern.^[28] The beam pattern changes its direction continually so that vehicles in front are not being illuminated, while the area surrounding them is being constantly illuminated at high beam intensity.^[29]

Touareg Hybrid (2010–2018)[edit]

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show^[32] and later at the 2010 New York International Auto Show and^[33] the 2010 Guangzhou Auto Show.

The Chinese model went on sale in early 2011.^[34]

Touareg Exclusive (2010-2018)[edit]

The Touareg Exclusive is a version of the Touareg that features seats with a two-tone leather combination «Nappa» upholstery in 2 colour combinations (Pepper Beige–Titan Black, Dark Burgundy–Titan Black). It also comes with heated front seats with electric 12-way settings, leather door inserts, a black headliner, and sill panel strips in stainless steel with exclusive lettering. Decorative elements made from real wood in «Olive Silk Gloss», 19-inch «Salamanca» alloy wheels in Sterling Silver (no-cost optional 19-inch Girona wheel, optional 20-inch «Tarragona» wheel), Chrome & Style package and roof rails in anodised silver.^[35]

Race Touareg 3[edit]

The Race Touareg 3 is a race car built for the 2011 Dakar Rally, replacing the Race Touareg 2. It includes a 2.5-litre twin-turbocharged TDI engine rated at 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp), a 5-speed sequential gearbox with a ZF-Sachs three-plate ceramic clutch, a steel space-frame chassis and BF Goodrich 235/85 R16 tyres.^[36]

2011 Qatar Motor Show concepts (2011)[edit]

The Race Touareg 3 Qatar is a concept car based on the Race Touareg 3 but adapted for street use. It includes BBS 18-inch gold wheels, Serpentino Grey Metallic safety cage, Recaro racing bucket seats, Matt Carbon interior trim, «Black» and «Pure Grey» Nubuk leather upholstery at seat side supports and the door trim panels, Titan Black Nappa leather-upholstered centre seat panels, two-tone seams and silver piping on the seat covers and safety-related items painted in Tornado Red.

The Touareg Gold Edition is based on the Touareg with a 4.2 V8 FSI engine. It includes custom-designed 22-inch wheels, roof rails, protective guard strips and window frames, mirror caps and parts of the air intake frame, «Magic Morning» body colour, 24-carat gold accents and switches, «Luna» interior trim colour, Luna Alcantara roof liner and Nappa leather seats, natural brown leather dashboard with Magnolia seams and floor mats in Natural brown with leather inserts in «Luna.»

The vehicles were unveiled at the 2011 Qatar Motor Show.^[37]

Touareg X (2013-2014)[edit]

The Touareg X is a limited (1000 units) version of the 2014 Touareg TDI Clean Diesel Lux (240PS) with a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system for the US market, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Volkswagen Touareg. It includes unique 19-inch ‘Moab’ aluminum-alloy wheels, Moonlight Blue Pearl body colour, LED taillight, Touareg X-specific badging, Vienna leather seating surfaces in Black Anthracite, a complementing black headliner, a panoramic powered sunroof, keyless access with push-button start, bi-xenon headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights, front fog- and cornering lights, RNS 850 navigation system with an eight-inch color touchscreen, 60GB hard drive, and rearview camera; Bluetooth technology, Climatronic dual-zone air conditioning, 12-way powered and heated front seats with driver seat memory and power adjustable lumbar and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel.^[38]

Marketing[edit]

As part of the Touareg product launch in China, a 3-part, 15-minute total movie named A Journey Beyond (锐·享征程) was produced. The movie was produced by DDB Guoan,^[43][44] and directed by Lu Chuan.^[45][46][47] The film itself was nominated as a finalist in the China Longxi awards under the FILM – Craft: Best editing category.^[48]

As part of National Museum of China sponsorship, Touareg Hybrid vehicles were offered as a free shuttle service – named «Museum Hopping» – between the National Museum, the Palace Museum, and the National Art Museum.^[49][50]

2015 facelift[edit]

For the model year 2016, the Touareg 7P was given a face-lift. Changes included:^[51]

The third generation Touareg was revealed on March 23, 2018. It emphasises fuel efficiency. VW discontinued the Touareg for sale in North America from the 2017 model year onward based on sales and the availability of the larger and less expensive Atlas (sold as the Teramont outside of the United States, Canada, and Chile) which was specifically designed for the United States.^[55] The vehicle is larger and uses the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with the corporate siblings, the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.

Touareg R PHEV[edit]

In February 2020, Volkswagen revealed the Touareg R plug-in hybrid variant. The powertrain combines a 3.0 litres (2,995 cc) V6 turbocharged petrol engine, a 136 PS (100 kW; 134 bhp) electric motor, and a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The total system output is 462 PS (340 kW; 456 bhp) and 700 N⋅m (516 lb⋅ft) torque.^[56]

Pikes Peak[edit]

VW Touareg TDI entered the 85th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, with V10 TDI Touaregs and a V6 TDI Touareg, driven by Ryan Arciero, Mike Miller, and Chris Blais. Arciero won the race with a time of 13:17:703 setting a new division record for the fastest time with a diesel powered vehicle. Miller finished second with a time of 13:25:247. Chris Blais finished third with a time of 15:48:312.^[57]

Baja 500[edit]

The 2.5L R5 TDI won a 2007 Baja 500 class with drivers Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/South Africa).^[58]

Baja 1000[edit]

It includes a 5.5 L V12 clean diesel engine with dual Garrett TR30R turbochargers rated at 550 PS (405 kW; 542 bhp) and 850 N⋅m (627 lbf⋅ft) of torque, Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission, 9-inch rear axle, Fox Racing Shocks, KMC 17″ custom forged Beadlock wheels with BFGoodrich Baja KRT 37×13.5×17 tires, Lowrance 9200 GPS and Sparco carbon fiber racing seats. It uses a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The chassis and body were designed by Arciero Miller Racing and Volkswagen Design Center California respectively.

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2008 LA Auto Show.^[59]

The Race Touareg TDI Trophy Truck completed the 41st Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 race with 13th position for Trophy Truck Class. The vehicle was driven by Mark Miller.^[60]

Dakar Rally[edit]

In the 2003 Dakar Rally, Volkswagen entered a team of rear-wheel drive Tarek buggies.^[61] VW claimed sixth overall, driven by Stephane Henrard and co-driver Bobby Willis. In the following year, the 2004 Dakar Rally saw the debut rally for the T2 class, built Race Touareg by Volkswagen Motorsport.^[61] Bruno Saby and co driver Matthew Stevenson claimed sixth position overall. In the 2005 Dakar Rally, Jutta Kleinschmidt and co-driver Fabrizia Pons claimed third spot overall in the Race Touareg.^[62]

In the 2006 Dakar Rally, Volkswagen driver Giniel de Villiers and co-driver Tina Thörner claimed the second spot, the highest ever for a diesel model in the new Race Touareg 2. It has a shorter wheelbase than the original Race Touareg, as well as increased visibility.^[62] For the 2007 Dakar Rally, VW driver Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford drove the Race Touareg 2 to 4th position overall. In the 2008 Central Europe Rally, Carlos Sainz drove his Race Touareg 2 to victory.^[63] Finally, in the 2009 edition of Rally Dakar, Volkswagen achieved a one-two result. Giniel de Villiers and co driver Dirk von Zitzewitz won the race ahead of Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford. With just two days to go, Carlos Sainz crashed out after dominating the rally for several days, thus preventing Volkswagen from making it a one-two-three result.^[64]

Carlos Sainz won in 2010 with a 1-2-3 finish, and Nasser Al-Attiyah won for VW in 2011.

A 1/32 slot car model of the Red Bull-sponsored Touareg, which is designed to run on the company’s RAID track (which simulates off-road racing), is available from Ninco.

Cape to Cape[edit]

On September 20, 2015, a Touareg V6 TDI driven by Rainer Zietlow, Marius Biela, and Sam Roach completed the run of 19,000 km from Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa, to the North Cape (Nordkapp) of Norway in a world record time of 9 days, 4 hours, 9 minutes and 27 seconds.^[65]

For the record run, a stronger suspension, larger tires, roll-cage and extra strong Hella head lights were added as well as additional tanks for a total range of 3,000 km (1,900 mi). The 244 hp (182 kW) V6 TDI engine and other mechanical parts such as gearbox and drive shafts were standard.

The Volkswagen Touareg (German pronunciation: [ˈtuːaʁɛk]) is a car produced by German automaker Volkswagen Group since 2002 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant. A five-seater mid-size luxury crossover SUV, the vehicle was named after the nomadic Tuareg people, inhabitants of the Saharan interior in North Africa.^[1] As of its first generation, the Touareg was developed together with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, and as of October 2020, the Touareg was developed together with the Audi Q8, the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus. The vehicles were designed as unibody SUVs with independent suspensions. The initial generation (2002–2010) offered five-, six-, eight-, ten- and twelve-cylinder engine choices depending on choice.

Development[edit]

The Volkswagen Touareg (internally designated Typ 7L) was developed as a joint venture project by Porsche and the Volkswagen Group, involving the Audi and Volkswagen brands. At the time of Typ 7L development and for the first several years of production, Porsche was independently owned and not yet a part of the Volkswagen group. The sports car market fluctuates, and Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking was looking to expand into new segments; this included marketing its first four-door vehicle. A team in Weissach, Germany, of over 300, led by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert, developed the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Now it is shared between the Touareg, the Audi Q7, and the Porsche Cayenne. However, there are styling, equipment, performance, and technical differences between them. The Touareg and Cayenne both seat five, while the Q7’s stretched wheelbase accommodates a third row for seven passengers.

The Volkswagen Touareg is built at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Audi Q7. The Cayenne is assembled by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany, at a facility built for Cayenne production.

Due to the demand and the exchange rates of euros against the US dollar, as well as different pricing and environmental policies in the US, the V6 and V8 engine variants make up most of Volkswagen’s American Touareg offering. Compared to other Volkswagen-branded vehicles sold in the US, which are aimed at the mass market, Touaregs came in more upscale trims and competed with other luxury crossover SUVs.^[2][3]

The Touareg comes as standard with a 4motion four-wheel drive system. It has an automatic progressively locking centre differential (with manual override) and a «low range» setting that can be activated with in-cabin controls. The Touareg featured an optional 4-wheel active air suspension, which can raise the ride height on command, and a locking rear differential to increase off-road capability.^[4] A rare option was a front-locking differential. Its load level ground clearance is at 6.3 in (160 mm), Off-Road Level is at 9.6 in (244 mm), and extra clearance of 11.8 in (300 mm).^[5]

W12 (2005–2010)[edit]

The 6.0-litre double overhead camshaft (DOHC), 48-valve W12 engine version was initially intended to be a limited-edition model, with just 500 units planned to be produced; around 330 were slated for sale in Saudi Arabia, with the remainder sold in Europe. Some of those W12 Touaregs were sold in China, but the number sold is unknown. No sales were made in the United States. Eventually, the W12 model became an ordinary model without any production restrictions. It is estimated to reach 100 kilometres per hour (62.1 mph) in 5.9 seconds.^[6]

V10 TDI (2002–2008)[edit]

The V10 TDI was offered in the United States for a limited time in 2004, but emissions regulations forced it off the market temporarily.^[7]

The V10 TDI returned to the U.S. market as a 2006 model-year vehicle in five states. Later US models went on sale in 2006, which was compliant with 50 states emission with Ultra-low sulphur diesel and particulate filter.^[8] Stricter California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards resulted in the V10 TDI being reduced to only 43 state emissions in 2008^[9] before being cancelled again in the United States.^[10] The V10 engine was replaced by a V6 TDI engine that met the CARB minimum emission requirements for the 2009 model year.

Fifth Gear used this version for testing to tow a Boeing 747.

Facelift (2006-2010)[edit]

The Touareg’s first facelift was unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show,^[11] with its North American debut at the 2007 New York Auto Show as a 2008 model.^[12] It now features the shield grille styling shared with other vehicles in the Volkswagen range. The updated Touareg has more than 2300 redesigned parts and boasts some new technological features:

• ABS Plus, which works in conjunction with the traction control system and shortens the braking distance by up to 25% on loose surfaces;
• Front Scan, an adaptive cruise control system which can slow or even stop the car depending on traffic conditions;
• Side Scan, a blind-spot monitor: it uses radar at the rear of the car to sense another car’s presence and causes light-emitting diodes (LEDs) built into the wing mirrors to flash. If the driver indicates to move out, the LEDs flash at an accelerated rate to warn the driver until the other vehicle moves out of the Touareg’s field of vision.

The 2007 Touareg, alongside an already lengthy options list, could be equipped with a driving dynamics package, a rollover sensor, a 620-watt Dynaudio sound system, and redesigned comfort seats. All diesel versions now have the diesel particulate filter standard.^[13]

In the US and Canada, the face-lifted Touareg was marketed as the Touareg 2 for the 2008–2010 model years, reverting to simply Touareg in 2011.

R50 (2007–2010)[edit]

The Touareg R50 is the third Volkswagen after the Golf and Passat to be given the ‘R’ treatment by Volkswagen Individual GmbH. The R50 global launch was at the 2007 Australian International Motor Show.

The «R50» naming comes from the engine displacement: 5.0 L. The R50 was offered with a 5.0-litre V10 diesel engine that produces 257 kW (349 PS; 345 bhp) and 850 N⋅m (627 lbf⋅ft) of torque, pushing the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 6.7 seconds.^[14]

The R50 came standard with 21-inch Omanyt wheels, sport-tuned air suspension, decorative ‘engine spin’ finish interior trim inlays, and an optional four-zone Climatronic climate control system.

V6 TDI (2007–2010)[edit]

The 2007 version of the V6 TDI has 239 PS (176 kW; 236 hp) and 500 N⋅m (369 lbf⋅ft) of torque. With this engine, the Touareg can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 8.3 seconds.^[15]

V6 TDI Clean Diesel (2009–2016)[edit]

The V6 TDI Clean Diesel featuring Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system replaced the V10 TDI in US and Canada. The Touareg contains a 4.5 US gallons (17 l; 3.7 imp gal) tank in the rear of the vehicle underneath the spare tyre, which stores the AdBlue solution. It is estimated that this tank will need to be replenished every 6,000–10,000 miles (9,700–16,100 km).^{[citation needed]} The Touareg does not include the NOX storage catalyst found in Jetta Clean Diesel TDI due to its heavy weight.^[16]

The Touareg BlueTDI was unveiled at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.^[17] The production version of the V6 TDI Clean Diesel was unveiled at the 2008 LA Auto Show.^[18]

Sander Kuiken, Technical development diesel application, Volkswagen AG, was one of the engineers that worked on the AdBlue system created by Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Kuiken talked about the difference between the VW Touareg diesel and gasoline vehicles.^[19]

Touareg «Lux Limited» (2009)[edit]

The Touareg «Lux Limited» is a version of the V6 TDI Clean Diesel (225PS), V6 FSI, and V8 FSI for the US market. It features 20-inch alloy wheels («Mountain» type) with size 275 all-season tires and a choice of 4 body colours (Sapphire Blue, Black Magic Pearl, Campanella White, and Galapagos Gray). It also came equipped with a full body colour aerodynamics kit, dual power front seats, full Cricket two-tone leather interior, touch screen navigation with streaming Bluetooth audio, 320-watt 11-speaker audio system, and adaptive high-intensity discharge headlamps.

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2009 NAIAS.^[20]

Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid (2009)[edit]

The Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid is a prototype hybrid vehicle featuring a 2,995 cc (182.8 cu in) V6 petrol engine with a ‘Twin Vortices Series’ (TVS) supercharger rated at 333 PS (245 kW; 328 bhp) at 5,500 rpm and 440 N⋅m (325 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 3,000 rpm, an electric motor rated at 52 PS (38 kW; 51 bhp) and 300 N⋅m (220 lbf⋅ft) of torque and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It has combined ratings of 374 PS (275 kW; 369 bhp) and 550 N⋅m (406 lbf⋅ft) of torque. The electric motor is powered by a 240-cell, 288 V, 6 Ah nickel metal-hydride battery array. The 4motion four-wheel drive system utilised a lighter Torsen centre differential from the Audi Q7 to save weight. The electric motor has a top speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). Start-stop system supports regenerative braking, and coasting. Power steering and air conditioning were changed to be powered by battery.

The planned production version included a special E-switch that the driver can activate for pure electric driving, 160 km/h (99 mph) coasting speed.^[21]

Marketing[edit]

In Canada and the US, ads showed the Touareg capable of feats that other Volkswagen cars could not accomplish, such as going right through a snowbank while a New Beetle got stuck.

A 2007 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI pulled a Boeing 747 as part of an advertising campaign, which holds the world record for the heaviest load towed by a passenger car.^[22]

In 2007 Día de los Innocents, Volkswagen Spain’s website, showed a fake Touareg Cabrio convertible. The site was registered to VW’s Spanish division.^[23]

As part of the Touareg 2 launch campaign coinciding with the premier of The Bourne Ultimatum movie, Volkswagen launched an interactive stunt simulator that allowed fans to play out their own stunts online. Users could maneuver any of six different VW models through various explosions, while altering vehicle speeds, props, sound effects, and camera angles to make that perfect scene.^[24]

The second generation (Typ 7P) Touareg was revealed on February 10, 2010, in Munich^[26] and later at the 2010 Beijing International Auto Show.^[27]

The new Touareg features a world-first automotive headlight technology: the «Dynamic Light Assist» glare-free high beam.^[26] Unlike an adaptive high-beam system, the Dynamic Light Assist system continually and gradually adjusts not only the high-beam range but also its pattern.^[28] The beam pattern changes its direction continually so that vehicles in front are not being illuminated, while the area surrounding them is being constantly illuminated at high beam intensity.^[29]

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show^[32] and later at the 2010 New York International Auto Show and^[33] the 2010 Guangzhou Auto Show.

Touareg Exclusive (2010-2018)[edit]

The Touareg Exclusive is a version of the Touareg that features seats with a two-tone leather combination «Nappa» upholstery in 2 colour combinations (Pepper Beige–Titan Black, Dark Burgundy–Titan Black). It also comes with heated front seats with electric 12-way settings, leather door inserts, a black headliner, and sill panel strips in stainless steel with exclusive lettering. Decorative elements made from real wood in «Olive Silk Gloss», 19-inch «Salamanca» alloy wheels in Sterling Silver (no-cost optional 19-inch Girona wheel, optional 20-inch «Tarragona» wheel), Chrome & Style package and roof rails in anodised silver.^[35]

Race Touareg 3[edit]

The Race Touareg 3 is a race car built for the 2011 Dakar Rally, replacing the Race Touareg 2. It includes a 2.5-litre twin-turbocharged TDI engine rated at 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp), a 5-speed sequential gearbox with a ZF-Sachs three-plate ceramic clutch, a steel space-frame chassis and BF Goodrich 235/85 R16 tyres.^[36]

2011 Qatar Motor Show concepts (2011)[edit]

The Race Touareg 3 Qatar is a concept car based on the Race Touareg 3 but adapted for street use. It includes BBS 18-inch gold wheels, Serpentino Grey Metallic safety cage, Recaro racing bucket seats, Matt Carbon interior trim, «Black» and «Pure Grey» Nubuk leather upholstery at seat side supports and the door trim panels, Titan Black Nappa leather-upholstered centre seat panels, two-tone seams and silver piping on the seat covers and safety-related items painted in Tornado Red.

The Touareg Gold Edition is based on the Touareg with a 4.2 V8 FSI engine. It includes custom-designed 22-inch wheels, roof rails, protective guard strips and window frames, mirror caps and parts of the air intake frame, «Magic Morning» body colour, 24-carat gold accents and switches, «Luna» interior trim colour, Luna Alcantara roof liner and Nappa leather seats, natural brown leather dashboard with Magnolia seams and floor mats in Natural brown with leather inserts in «Luna.»

The Touareg X is a limited (1000 units) version of the 2014 Touareg TDI Clean Diesel Lux (240PS) with a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system for the US market, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Volkswagen Touareg. Marketing[edit]

As part of the Touareg product launch in China, a 3-part, 15-minute total movie named A Journey Beyond (锐·享征程) was produced. The movie was produced by DDB Guoan,^[43][44] and directed by Lu Chuan.^[45][46][47] The film itself was nominated as a finalist in the China Longxi awards under the FILM – Craft: Best editing category.^[48]

As part of National Museum of China sponsorship, Touareg Hybrid vehicles were offered as a free shuttle service – named «Museum Hopping» – between the National Museum, the Palace Museum, and the National Art Museum.^[49][50]

2015 facelift[edit]

For the model year 2016, the Touareg 7P was given a face-lift. Changes included:^[51]

The third generation Touareg was revealed on March 23, 2018. It emphasises fuel efficiency. VW discontinued the Touareg for sale in North America from the 2017 model year onward based on sales and the availability of the larger and less expensive Atlas (sold as the Teramont outside of the United States, Canada, and Chile) which was specifically designed for the United States.^[55] The vehicle is larger and uses the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with the corporate siblings, the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.

Touareg R PHEV[edit]

In February 2020, Volkswagen revealed the Touareg R plug-in hybrid variant. The powertrain combines a 3.0 litres (2,995 cc) V6 turbocharged petrol engine, a 136 PS (100 kW; 134 bhp) electric motor, and a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The total system output is 462 PS (340 kW; 456 bhp) and 700 N⋅m (516 lb⋅ft) torque.^[56]

A modified Touareg dubbed Stanley won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge.

Pikes Peak[edit]

VW Touareg TDI entered the 85th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, with V10 TDI Touaregs and a V6 TDI Touareg, driven by Ryan Arciero, Mike Miller, and Chris Blais. Arciero won the race with a time of 13:17:703 setting a new division record for the fastest time with a diesel powered vehicle. Miller finished second with a time of 13:25:247. Chris Blais finished third with a time of 15:48:312.^[57]

Baja 500[edit]

The 2.5L R5 TDI won a 2007 Baja 500 class with drivers Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/South Africa).^[58]

Baja 1000[edit]

It includes a 5.5 L V12 clean diesel engine with dual Garrett TR30R turbochargers rated at 550 PS (405 kW; 542 bhp) and 850 N⋅m (627 lbf⋅ft) of torque, Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission, 9-inch rear axle, Fox Racing Shocks, KMC 17″ custom forged Beadlock wheels with BFGoodrich Baja KRT 37×13.5×17 tires, Lowrance 9200 GPS and Sparco carbon fiber racing seats. It uses a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The chassis and body were designed by Arciero Miller Racing and Volkswagen Design Center California respectively.

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2008 LA Auto Show.^[59]

The Race Touareg TDI Trophy Truck completed the 41st Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 race with 13th position for Trophy Truck Class. The vehicle was driven by Mark Miller.^[60]

Dakar Rally[edit]

In the 2003 Dakar Rally, Volkswagen entered a team of rear-wheel drive Tarek buggies.^[61] VW claimed sixth overall, driven by Stephane Henrard and co-driver Bobby Willis. In the following year, the 2004 Dakar Rally saw the debut rally for the T2 class, built Race Touareg by Volkswagen Motorsport.^[61] Bruno Saby and co driver Matthew Stevenson claimed sixth position overall. In the 2005 Dakar Rally, Jutta Kleinschmidt and co-driver Fabrizia Pons claimed third spot overall in the Race Touareg.^[62]

In the 2006 Dakar Rally, Volkswagen driver Giniel de Villiers and co-driver Tina Thörner claimed the second spot, the highest ever for a diesel model in the new Race Touareg 2. It has a shorter wheelbase than the original Race Touareg, as well as increased visibility.^[62] For the 2007 Dakar Rally, VW driver Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford drove the Race Touareg 2 to 4th position overall. In the 2008 Central Europe Rally, Carlos Sainz drove his Race Touareg 2 to victory.^[63] Finally, in the 2009 edition of Rally Dakar, Volkswagen achieved a one-two result. Giniel de Villiers and co driver Dirk von Zitzewitz won the race ahead of Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford. With just two days to go, Carlos Sainz crashed out after dominating the rally for several days, thus preventing Volkswagen from making it a one-two-three result.^[64]

On September 20, 2015, a Touareg V6 TDI driven by Rainer Zietlow, Marius Biela, and Sam Roach completed the run of 19,000 km from Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa, to the North Cape (Nordkapp) of Norway in a world record time of 9 days, 4 hours, 9 minutes and 27 seconds.^[65]

For the record run, a stronger suspension, larger tires, roll-cage and extra strong Hella head lights were added as well as additional tanks for a total range of 3,000 km (1,900 mi). The 244 hp (182 kW) V6 TDI engine and other mechanical parts such as gearbox and drive shafts were standard.

Просто мне казалось, что исторически французы, чтобы заработать лишнего баблоса на печати, самозабвенно вставляли лишние буквы во все слова. Добротная машина, высокое качество изготовления,некоторые детали кузова пора менять, а от многих отказаться.

Гонял и в Астрахань, и в Карелию — все отлично. По ходовым качествам ни с чем ни сравнишь, движок шикарный и немаловажно экономичный. Запас хода 1 000 км. Самое главное обслуживать, согласно требований производителя. В прошлом году купил новый 3,0 TDI X Edition и дочери бензиновый 3,6 очень довольны! Достойная машина. Соотношение цена-качество лучшее (японцев и корейцев даже никогда не рассматривал).

Две недели назад купил новый Туарег Р-лайн, в целом авто понравилось, но за такие деньги, что он стоит, могли бы и музыку поставить хорошую, а то баян, баяном. Одним словом плохая и шумки совсем нет, то есть очень плохая. Буду делать и то, и другое.

Короче, расход около 12 литров в режиме ECO. При этом машина готова в любой момент прыгнуть и убежать, унося тебя с собой, в отличие от прошлого японца… Волшебное ощущение! Но на экране тут же средний расход прыгает до 14 и выше, да и фиг с ним, ну в самом деле! В общем, после японцев, машина «прыгает» и рулится лучше. Сильно лучше, и это прямо очень заметно.

Тормозит тоже очень хорошо! Ощущение, что на педаль тормоза давить нужно сильнее, но, субъективно, ход у неё меньше, поэтому быстрее достигает предела. Про эргономику. Мне несколько за сорок, и кресла в Туареге — это то, что мне нужно! Ну вот удобные, что сказать? Массаж, чтобы не заснуть, вентиляция, чтобы, ну, вы поняли. Руль на себя вытягивается так, как на ни одном Ниссане. Вот теперь мне удобно!

Внешний вид

В целом дизайн Фольксваген Туарег 2021 в новом кузове не подвергнется серьезным переделкам, но на фото все равно можно будет найти несколько интересных деталей, которых раньше не было. Новая модель получит более грозную воздухозаборную систему, немного переделанную головную оптику, иные воздухозаборники, немного нового рельефа, а также больше вставок, которые имеют хромированный окрас.

Заметнее всего преобразилась передняя часть, которая стала чуть короче, а также располагается под меньшим углом, благодаря чему морда теперь больше походит на то, что обычно можно наблюдать на современных внедорожниках. Передняя часть бампера представлена массивной воздухозаборной системой почти трапециевидной формы, которая включает в себя обилие полосок, расположенных как горизонтально, так и вертикально, и образующих сетку.

Максимально солидно новый Volkswagen Toareg 2021 выглядит сбоку. Здесь в глаза бросается обилие деталей, которые покрашены в хром. К таковым относятся рейлинги на крыше, тонкое обрамление окон, вставки, расположенные немного ниже зеркал заднего вида, дверные ручки, но не в каждой комплектации, а также полоска, помещенная немного выше порогов.

К украшениям можно отнести обилие волнообразного рельефа, крупные окна с черными глянцевыми разделительными стойками, стильные треугольные зеркала, оснащенные поворотными сигналами, огромные колёсные арки с солидными расширениями, немного выпирающие пороги и защиту из некрашеного пластика для периметра, которая ставится по желанию.

В целом облик задней части внедорожника остался практически таким же, каким и был до обновления. Все так же эта часть кузова располагается под небольшим наклоном и оснащается такими деталями, как немного наклоненный козырек, крупное окно прямоугольной формы, треугольные габаритные сигналы, волнообразный рельеф и шильдики, покрашенные в хром. Много места выделено тут под обвес, который состоит из небольшого диффузора, покрашенного в черный цвет, полоски стоповых сигналов, противотуманок, защитной вставки и пары вырезов под выхлопную систему, имеющих интересную форму.

Салон

Внутри новый Фольксваген Туарег 2021 модельного года оснащен по последнему слову техники. Здесь можно найти шикарную отделку из натуральной кожи, металлов, дерева и совсем небольшого количества пластика с тканями, огромное количество опций, повышающих комфорт и безопасность, а также набор великолепных сидений, благодаря которым любая поездка на машине будет приносить пассажирам только положительные эмоции. Современный облик достался приборной панели. Она состоит из огромного сенсорного дисплея, который поделен на две неравные части: экран приборов и основной мультимедийный монитор, слегка повернутый в сторону водителя. Также на торпедо можно найти декоративные вставки из дерева и пару дефлекторов.

Следом идет тоннель, который располагается перпендикулярно к торпедо. Он заполняется крупной технической панелью, парой подстаканников с функциями охлаждения и подогрева содержимого, а также большим подлокотником, который под собой скрывает холодильник.

Автомобиль всегда будет иметь пять очень комфортных посадочных мест, которые получат отделку натуральной кожей, систему подогрева, охлаждение, регулировки положения при помощи электрических приводов, память настроек, боковую поддержку, наклоняемые подголовники, а также откидной подлокотник для дивана второго ряда.

Безопасность Touareg 3

Система безопасности нового Туарега поражает воображение. Кроме стандартных передних и боковых подушек безопасности, разработчики учли все возможные риски при передвижении. Новый внедорожник оснащен:

Специально для этой машины придуманы совершенно новые системы безопасности: программа Roadwork Line Assist, которая позволяет ездить по пробкам (до 60 км/час). Авто может само регулировать руль, придерживаться полосы, разгоняться, тормозить, останавливаться.

The Volkswagen Touareg is a luxury 4×4 (US: SUV) automobile manufactured by Volkswagen. It is the first of this class ever produced by this manufacturer.

The Touareg was co-developed with Porsche, who was also looking to add an SUV to their lineup, as a cost-sharing initiative. Porsche shares this chassis to underpin their Cayenne SUV, although there are numerous styling, equipment and technical differences between the two vehicles. Also, the Touareg replaced the Volkswagen Eurovan for North America as the company’s truck.

Recent Changes

• The 2010 Geneva Motor Show played host to the world debut of the Second-generation Touareg. The 200kg (440 lb) lighter body also previews the next generation Porsche Cayenne. Aesthetically, the new mid-size SUV borrows heavily from the Scirocco/Golf school of design but, at the same time, eschews the slab-sided-ness of the outgoing model in favor of a curvier and more sculpted, yet familiar, body. Inside, the new Touareg sports a cleaner, simpler and better integrated cabin while still retaining its signature wood trim surrounded by aluminium borders. The longer body also accomodates, what VW claims, is the largest panoramic sunroof in any SUV. Under the hood, VW offers three new engine choices in the forms of a 3.0 litre TDI V6 which develops 240 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque while sipping only 31.8mpg US (38.1mpg UK or 7.4lt/100km) and producing 195g/km of CO2, a 4.2 litre TDI V8 churning out 335 hp and a massive 590 lb-ft of torque while returning 25.8 mpg US (31mpg UK or 9.1 lt/100km) and 239g/km of CO2 and, the biggest news, a 3.3-liter supercharged V6 TSI mated to a 46 hp electric motor (see Hybrid Models section). All powertrains are mated to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission channeling power to all four wheels. Speaking of the AWD system, the base 4MOTION versions get a Torsen limited-slip differential (climbing ability: 31 degrees) and an «Off-road driving programme», which — at the press of a button — tunes the ABS, EDS and ASR for off-road duty, activates Hill Descent Assist and adjusts the automatic gearshift points. Optionally, instead of a Torsen differential, the V6 TDI can be ordered with an «Terrain Tech Packet» that is said to have an even more rugged transfer case designed for off-road duty. It includes reduction gearing and centre and rear differentials, each with up to 100 percent locking (climbing ability: 45 degrees). Like the first-gen model, this version also gets a rotary switch that allows the driver to adapt the car to specific duty conditions over five levels: 1. «On-Road»; 2. «Off-Road» (like «Off-road driving programme» plus automatic control of the mechanical locks); 3. Low (like «Off-road» plus activation of reduced gearing, higher shift points, no automatic upshift in manual mode); 4. Addition of centre differential lock; 5. Addition of rear differential lock. The twin-turbocharged diesel V10 engine pushes the Touareg from 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.9 seconds, and on to 130 mph (209 km/h) maximum. The Diesel V10 was offered in the United States for a limited time in 2004 and 2005, but — emissions regulations forced it off the market for a temporary period. Volkswagen is working on fixing these issues, and will return the V10 to the US lineup in 2006.

The W12 version should reach 100 km/h (60 mph) in 5.9 seconds. Production of the W12 Touareg is limited to 500 units. Of these, 330 are slated for Saudi Arabia, with none going to the United States.

Reliability

• RECALL ALERT: On February 18, 2008, Volkswagen announced a small recall involving 96 MY 2008 Touaregs. The problem stems from a fuel supply line that was changed during production which could lead to insufficient sealing of the fuel supply line connector. This condition could lead to a fuel leak which in turn could result into a fire in the presence of an ignition source. Volkswagen dealers will inspect and replace the fuel supply line, if necessary. The 2007 Touareg received very high ratings in safety tests carried out by the NHTSA. In front- and side-impact crash tests, the Touareg received 5-Star ratings across the board, and in tests for rollover, it received a 4-Star rating.

Hybrid Models

The second-generation features a Hybrid option right off the bat. The powertrain is a 3.3-liter supercharged V6 TSI producing 330hp and 265 lb-ft of torque with a 46hp electric motor for a combined output of 376hp and 428 lb-ft. The Touareg Hybrid, that can be driven up to 50 km/h or 30 mph in purely electric mode, sprints from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 6.5 seconds and returns a combined 8.2lt/100km which is equal to 34.4mpg UK and 28.7mpg US.

Unique Attributes

Volkswagen employees had set out an experiment to see if the Touareg V10 can tow a 155 ton Boeing 747. Set in an airfield outside London, the necessary modification to the car is an extra 4300 kgs added to ensure the power from the engine to be translated into propelling force. The Touareg managed to tow the Boeing 150 metres without any stress to all of the car’s components.

Third generation (CR; 2018)

The third generation Touareg was revealed on March 23, 2018. It emphasizes fuel efficiency. VW has discontinued the Touareg for sale in North America from the 2017 model year onward, based on sales, and on the availability of the larger and less expensive Atlas (Teramont elsewhere) model which was specifically designed for the United States. The vehicle is larger and uses the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with the corporate siblings, the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.

Touareg R PHEV

In February 2020, Volkswagen revealed the Touareg R plug-in hybrid variant. The powertrain is a combination of a 3.0 litres (2,995 cc) V6 turbocharged petrol engine, a 136 PS (100 kW; 134 bhp) electric motor and a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The total system output is 462 PS (340 kW; 456 bhp) and 700 N⋅m (516 lb⋅ft) torque.

Second generation (7P; 2010)

The second generation (Typ 7P) Touareg was revealed on February 10, 2010 in Munich, and later at the 2010 Beijing International Auto Show.

The new Touareg features a world first in automotive headlight technology: the «Dynamic Light Assist» glare-free high beam. Unlike an adaptive high beam system, the Dynamic Light Assist system continually and gradually adjusts not only the range of the high-beam, but also its pattern. The beam pattern changes its direction continually so that vehicles in front are not being illuminated, while the area surrounding them is being constantly illuminated at high beam intensity.

Touareg Hybrid (2010–2018)

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, and later at the 2010 New York International Auto Show and 2010 Guangzhou Auto Show.

The Chinese model went on sale in early 2011.

Touareg Exclusive (2010-2018)

The Touareg Exclusive is a version of the Touareg that features seats with a two-tone leather combination «Nappa» upholstery in 2 colour combinations (Pepper Beige–Titan Black, Dark Burgundy–Titan Black), heated front seats with electric 12-way settings, electro-pneumatically adjustable backrest side bolsters and head restraints with longitudinal and height adjustment; leather door inserts, a black headliner and sill panel strips in stainless steel with exclusive lettering, decorative elements made from real wood in «Olive Silk Gloss», 19-inch «Salamanca» alloy wheels in Sterling Silver (no-cost optional 19-inch Girona wheel, optional 20-inch «Tarragona» wheel), Chrome & Style package and roof rails in anodised silver.

First Generation/Origins: (2004-2010)

Despite the misconception that the Touareg and Cayenne are «soft-roaders» with little or no off-road ability, Porsche/Volkswagen jointly did extensive off-road testing with test mules and both vehicles are in actuality extremely capable off-road, all that is really necessary are more aggressive tires. Volkswagen, for instance, entered a modified Touareg in the Paris Dakar.

Stanley the modified Touareg also won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge.

Both Touareg and Cayenne come standard with four wheel drive, a manually lockable center differential and a «low range» setting that can be activated with in-cabin controls. Options to make the vehicles more capable off-road include an available air suspension system which can raise the car’s ride height on command and an interior switch allowing the rear differential to be manually locked along with the center unit. At maximum ride height, the air suspension system gives 10.7 in of ground clearance.

The Touareg name is derived from the French moniker for the nomadic Tuareg tribe. The name of the vehicle is frequently mispronounced; the proper pronunciation is TWAH-reg. Ironically it is a word that Germans find difficult to pronounce, finding it eas
ier to say «Tour-egg».

Worldwide

The Touareg has become controversial in Australia. Former Australian Rugby Union captain, Phil Kearns was provided with a V8-powered Touareg as an ambassador for the vehicle. On October 22, 2005 an incident occurred in the driveway of the Kearns’ family home whereby the 19-month old daughter of Kearns was struck by the vehicle in forward motion not reverse, leaving her with very serious injuries. Road safety advocates in Australia have pointed to the poor visibility from the drivers’ seat of the Touareg, and of SUVs generally, as the cause of the accident. An Australian National Roads and Motorists Association (NRMA) study has revealed that a child needs to be 7.8 metres from the rear bumper of the vehicle in order to be observed by the driver. This fact has led to calls for reversing cameras to be made compulsory on all SUVs sold in Australia.

Design quirks and oddities

Environmental and health concerns

The V10 diesel version of the Touareg was named «meanest» or least-energy-efficient 2004 car by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) for its fuel economy of 17 miles per US gallon city (7.3 km/L) and 23 mpg highway (9.8 km/L). This, along with the Touareg’s emissions and their estimated impact on global warming and health, earned it the low «Green Score» of 9, as compared to the Honda Civic GX, which was the «greenest«, at a score of 57. Within the context of the US SUV’s that are significantly less efficient (e.g. Hummer) this accolade is not so damning.

Interestingly enough, diesel is the ecological option used around the world. In Europe, where ecology has a strong effect on politics, over 50% of the cars are diesel. The coalition government of the German Green Party and the SPD Social Democratic Party of Germany introduced highly restrictive environmental policies, that increased the use of diesel and biodiesel vehicles. Diesel engines are, on average, 40% more efficient than gasoline engines (spark-ignition engines). The increased fuel economy of the diesel over the petrol engine means that the diesel produces less carbon dioxide (CO2) per unit distance. Recently, advances in production and changes in the political climate have increased the availability and awareness of biodiesel, an alternative to petroleum-derived diesel fuel with a much lower net-sum emission of CO2, due to the absorption of CO2 by plants used to produce the fuel.

The Touareg was Car and Driver magazine’s Best Luxury SUV for 2003, Motor Trend magazine’s Sport/Utility of the Year for 2004, «Four Wheeler» magazine’s Four Wheeler of the Year for 2005 & Overlander’s 2003 4WDOTY.

The Touareg’s V10 engine won 2003’s International Engine of the Year.

Development, Success and Distribution

The Touareg was a joint project developed by Porsche and Volkswagen, initially called E1. The goal was to create an off-road vehicle that could handle as a sports car. The team, with over 300 people, was lead by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert and was based in Weissach im Tal, Germany.
The Volkswagen Touareg is built in Bratislava, Slovakia. The manufacturing plant shares production with Touareg-cousins Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.
Due to the demand, and the exchange rates of Euro vs. Dollar, as well as different pricing and environmental policies in the USA, only V6 and V8 are available for the North American market. A very limited number of the 2004 V10 diesel engine units were sent and are currently highly priced, even on the used market.
