Mylène Jeanne Gautier[3] (French: [milɛn ʒan ɡotje]; born 12 September 1961), known professionally as Mylène Farmer ([milɛn faʁmœʁ]), is a Canadian-born French singer, songwriter, occasional actress, writer, and entrepreneur. Having sold more than 30 million records in France,[4] she is among the most successful recording artists of all time in that country.[5] She holds the record for the most number one hit singles in the French charts, with twenty-one to date – eight of which were consecutive.[6]

Born in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada (a former city now part of the Montreal borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro),[7] to French parents, the family soon relocated to Chaville, near Paris, where Farmer pursued a career in modelling and acting.[8] She later gained prominence as a recording artist with the release of her debut single «Maman a tort» in 1984.[9] In 1988, she released her second studio album, Ainsi soit je…, which sold 1.5 million copies in France.[10] The album spawned Farmer’s first number one on the French singles chart, «Pourvu qu’elles soient douces».[11] Her third studio album, L’autre…, sold two million copies, becoming Farmer’s best-selling album to date.[12] Its lead single, «Désenchantée», became Farmer’s most successful single, and is often described as her signature song.[13]

Departing from the synth-pop and Europop soundscape of her first albums, Farmer reinvented her musical style with the release of her fourth studio album, Anamorphosée, in 1995.[14] Recorded in the United States, the album features more live instrumentation and shows rock and R&B-oriented influences.[14] Her fifth studio album, Innamoramento, was released in 1999, featuring more techno influences.[15] In the second part of the 2000s, Farmer continued exploring a range of genres on her albums, namely acoustic pop music on Avant que l’ombre…[16] and electronica on Point de suture.[17]

In 2010, Farmer released her eighth studio album, Bleu noir.[18] The album marked Farmer’s return to the dark synth-pop and Europop production of her first albums.[19] The lead single, «Oui mais… non», sold over 170.000 copies in France.[20] In 2015, Farmer’s tenth studio album, Interstellaires, debuted at number one in France;[21] the album was preceded by the lead single «Stolen Car», a duet with Sting, which reached the number one position on the French singles chart in September 2015.[22] Her eleventh studio album, Désobéissance, was released in 2018, debuting at number one and selling over 265.000 copies.[23]

In addition to her music career, Farmer also worked as a songwriter for French singer Alizée, while also being responsible for her image and public appearances.[24] Her debut single, «Moi… Lolita», written by Farmer, reached number one in several countries in Europe,[25][26][27][28] and peaked at number nine on the UK Singles Chart in February 2002.[29] Farmer made her film debut in 1994, starring in Giorgino,[30] and in 2018, she starred in the English-language horror film Ghostland.[31]

Throughout her career, Farmer has broken a number of records. She is the best-selling French singer since 1984,[32] has a record number of diamond records,[33] and she is the only artist to have obtained a diamond album in four consecutive decades.[33] Selling over two million copies, her 2001 greatest hits album Les Mots is the highest-selling compilation album by a French recording artist.[34]

Biography and career[edit]

1961–1983: Early years and career beginnings[edit]

Mylène Jeanne Gautier was born 12 September 1961 in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada (a former city now part of the present-day Montreal borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro). Her father, Max Gautier was a dam engineer; her mother, Marguerite (née Martin) was a homemaker.[35] The family moved from France in the late 1950s due to her father’s work responsibilities.[35] Her family moved back to France when Farmer was eight, settling in the Parisian banlieue of Chaville.[8] When she first arrived in France, she took speech classes after her school declared her Québécois accent to be «improper».[36] At the age of 17, Farmer discovered acting and undertook a three-year course at the Cours Florent, a drama school in Paris.[37] Changing her name to Mylène Farmer as a tribute to her idol, 1930s Hollywood actress Frances Farmer, she began to earn a living as a model acting in several TV adverts, such as those for IKEA, Fiskars and Caisse d’Epargne.[38][39] Farmer also appeared in a local stage production of Le père Noël est une ordure.[37]

In 1984, Farmer met Laurent Boutonnat, a young film student, after answering a newspaper advert for an actress for a small film project he was working on.[40] Farmer and Boutonnat became friends and forged a creative partnership, writing and producing the music.[41] Boutonnat, whose ambition was to become a film director, became the creative force behind Farmer’s videos.[41] In 1984, Farmer recorded and released the song «Maman a tort», written by Boutonnat and Jérôme Dahan.[42] The trio continued to work together on what would become Farmer’s first studio album.

1984–1992: Cendres de lune, Ainsi soit je… and L’autre…[edit]

Farmer’s debut studio album, Cendres de lune, was released in 1986.[43] During the recording process, it was decided that Farmer would write lyrics and Boutonnat would write music and direct the music videos.[41] «Libertine» was released as the lead single of the album, accompanied by a music video in the style of a short film, inspired by 19th century literature.[44]

In 1988, Boutonnat and Farmer started work on her sophomore album, Ainsi soit je…. The album sold 1.5 million copies in France[10] and spawned Farmer’s first number one on the French singles chart, «Pourvu qu’elles soient douces».[11] The album also features the songs «Sans contrefaçon» and the Juliette Gréco cover «Déshabillez-moi».[45] Ainsi soit je… was the best-selling female album of the 1980s in France.[46]

Following the positive response to small-scale concerts at the Palais de Sport,[47] Farmer agreed to embark on a 50-date tour throughout francophone Europe in 1989.[48] The tour saw Farmer play in arenas and featured dancers and outfits designed by French fashion designer Thierry Mugler.[48] A live album documenting the tour was released at the end of that year, titled En Concert.[49]

Farmer released the song «Désenchantée» in March 1991. An uptempo pop song, «Désenchantée» talks about a disillusioned generation.[50] The song was preceded by a number of demonstrations in Paris, led by high-school students, who were «protest[ing] against overcrowded classrooms, inadequate security and too few teachers».[51][52] The song ended up spending nine weeks atop the French singles chart,[43] becoming Farmer’s most successful single to date and her signature song. The song was also successful in Belgium, where it spent six weeks at number one, and it was a top ten hit in several European countries.[43] Its accompanying music video, shot in Budapest, sees Farmer play a rebelling prisoner in a concentration camp.[53]

Led by the success of «Désenchantée», L’autre… was released in April 1991. The album spent twenty consecutive weeks on top of the French album charts, becoming Farmer’s best-selling studio album to date with two million copies sold.[54] The album also charted in Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.[55] To further promote the album, the singles «Regrets», «Je t’aime mélancolie» and «Beyond My Control» were released.[56]

1992 saw the release of the remix compilation Dance Remixes. It was led by the single «Que mon cœur lâche», which deals with the topic of AIDS and sexual relations.[57] It was accompanied by a video directed by Luc Besson, in which Farmer plays an angel sent down to earth by God to report on the changing ways people experience love.[58]

1995–2000: Anamorphosée and Innamoramento[edit]

In 1994, Farmer starred in the film Giorgino, written and directed by Boutonnat.[59] The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics[60][61][62] and was a box-office bomb.[63] Following this, Farmer relocated to Los Angeles.[64]

While in the U.S., Farmer and Boutonnat started working on her fourth studio album, Anamorphosée. The album marked an artistic turn for Farmer, moving away from her early synth-pop music in favour of pop rock, R&B and new jack swing influences.[65] The album was launched by «XXL», the music video of which was directed by Marcus Nispel and features Farmer strapped to the front of a moving train.[66] To further promote the album, the singles «L’Instant X», «California», «Comme j’ai mal» and «Rêver» were released. The music video for «California» was directed by American filmmaker Abel Ferrara and features Farmer in a dual role.[67] The album differs lyrically from Farmer’s previous work: «Rêver» deals with the Holocaust and features a call for tolerance,[68] «XXL» talks about universal love from a feminist perspective,[69] and «L’Instant X» offers a humorous look at the end of the world.[70]

In summer 1996, Farmer embarked on her second concert tour, during which she performed 21 shows in arenas around France, Belgium and Switzerland.[71] Inspired by American concert tours,[72] Farmer performed the majority of songs from Anamorphosée, songs from her previous studio albums, and a cover of «La Poupée qui fait non» with French singer Khaled.[73] The corresponding live album, Live à Bercy, was released in May 1997.[74]

Farmer released her fifth studio album Innamoramento in 1999. The album was preceded by «L’Âme-stram-gram», an uptempo techno song with a music video inspired by the film A Chinese Ghost Story.[75] Both the single and the album reached the second position on the French charts.[76] The music video for the second single, «Je te rends ton amour», sparked controversy because of its religious and transgressive imagery, and was censored by French TV channel M6.[77] Consequently, the video was released on VHS, with the profits donated to French charity Sidaction to support HIV/AIDS research.[78] Furthermore, the singles «Souviens-toi du jour», «Optimistique-moi» and «Innamoramento» were released in promotion of the album.[79][80][81]

In late 1999, Farmer embarked on her third concert tour, the Mylenium Tour.[82] The stage of the show featured aerial structures and a pharaonic statue at the centre of the stage. Farmer performed 42 shows in total, including three shows in Russia, her first concerts in a non-French-speaking country.[82] The tour concluded in March 2000.[82]

2000–2007: Alizée, Les mots and Avant que l’ombre…[edit]

In 2000, Farmer and Boutonnat started working on songs and video ideas they felt appropriate for a younger singer. They discovered Alizée Jacotey on the French television show Graines de stars. Farmer and Boutonnat wrote and produced Alizée’s albums Gourmandises (2001)[83] and Mes courants électriques (2003).[84] In addition, Farmer was also responsible for Alizée’s image and public appearances.[24] Her debut single, «Moi… Lolita», written by Farmer, reached number one in several countries in Europe,[25][26][27][28] and peaked at number nine on the UK Singles Chart in February 2002.[29] It also went on to sell more than one million copies in France.[85] In 2005, after two albums and a concert tour, Alizée amicably parted ways with the duo to work with different songwriters and producers.[86]

In 2001, Farmer recorded «L’Histoire d’une fée, c’est…» for the animated film Rugrats in Paris: The Movie. At the end of the year, Universal released Farmer’s first greatest hits collection: Les Mots. Les Mots was the best selling album of 2001 and 2002,[34] and remains the best selling greatest hits album in France with more than 1.5 million copies sold.[87] The album also featured new tracks, including the title track, a duet with British singer Seal, «C’est une belle journée» and «Pardonne-moi».[88]

After a hiatus of four years, Farmer held a press conference in 2005, announcing her new album, Avant que l’ombre…, the single «Fuck Them All», as well as a special 13-night concert engagement at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in January 2006.[89] The residency in Bercy featured a complex set designed by Mark Fisher, including two stages, a mobile bridge to link the two stages and a water curtain used to project words and the singer’s silhouette.[90] A live album and a concert DVD, Avant que l’ombre… à Bercy, were released in December 2006.[91]

Following this, Farmer and American electronic musician Moby worked on the French-language duet version of the singer’s song «Slipping Away», with the French lyrics translated by Farmer herself.[92] In 2007, Farmer recorded a song «Devant soi» for the soundtrack of the film Jacquou le Croquant,[93] and worked as a voice actress in Luc Besson’s animated feature Arthur and the Minimoys, lending her voice to Princess Selenia.[94] Farmer would later reprise her role in the film’s two sequels.

2008–2014: Point de suture, Bleu noir and Monkey Me[edit]

Farmer’s seventh studio album, Point de Suture, was released on 25 August 2008, debuting at number one on the French album chart.[95] Along with its lead single «Dégénération», the album features more electronic instrumentation and is predominately uptempo.[96][97] Other singles released from the album include «Appelle mon numéro» and «C’est dans l’air», bothof which charted at number one on the French singles chart.[98]

Following the release of the album, Farmer embarked on her fifth concert tour entitled Mylène Farmer en tournée. The tour saw Farmer play in stadiums for the first time in her career, giving concerts at the Stade de France, Stade de Genève and King Baudouin Stadium, as well as a number of arenas in France and Russia.[99][100][101] A live album, N°5 on Tour, was released on 7 December 2009, which was followed by a DVD of her Stade de France concerts.[102]

Farmer recorded a duet with French Chanson singer Line Renaud entitled «C’est pas l’heure».[103] In November 2010, Farmer recorded her vocals for a cover of «Never Tear Us Apart» with Ben Harper for Australian band INXS’s album Original Sin.[104]

2010 also saw the release of Farmer’s eighth studio album, Bleu noir. Produced by RedOne,[105] Moby[106] and British alternative band Archive,[106] it entered the French album chart at number one and remained at the top for three consecutive weeks. It was the 9th best-selling album in France in 2010, with more than 300,000 copies sold in only three weeks.[107] «Oui mais… non», the album’s lead single was released in October 2010 and went on to become the singer’s most successful single since 2002.[108] In promotion of the album, the singles «Bleu Noir» and «Lonely Lisa» were released.[109][110]

Farmer’s second greatest hits collection, titled 2001.2011, was released in late 2011, featuring all singles recorded after 2001’s Les Mots, and a new single titled «Du temps«.[111]

In early 2012, Farmer said that she was recording a new album which was to be released late 2012.[112] The lead single, «À l’ombre» had its radio premiere in October 2012, and the album, Monkey Me entered the French charts at number one in December 2012.[113]

In support of Bleu noir and Monkey Me, Farmer embarked on the Timeless 2013 concert tour, starting in September 2013.[114] More than 500,000 people in total attended the tour, which visited arenas in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Belarus and Russia.[115][non-primary source needed] The live album of the tour was released in December, with an eponymous film shot in widescreen during the shows in Lyon.[116]

2015–2021: Interstellaires, Désobéissance and Histoires de[edit]

In 2015, Farmer collaborated with French photographer Sylvie Lancrenon on a coffee table book entitled Fragile.[117] Featuring 90 photos of Farmer taken by Lancrenon, the imagery consists of intimate photographs of the singer covered in talc and clay, focusing on the juxtaposition of fragility and powerfulness.[118]

In August 2015, a new site was launched, announcing new material from Farmer. The first single to be released was «Stolen Car»,[119] a duet with Sting, who originally recorded the song for his 2003 album Sacred Love. The single reached number one on the French and Belgian (Wallonia) singles chart[120] and also marks Farmer’s debut on top of Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart.[121] Its parent record, Interstellaires, was released on 6 November 2015, becoming Farmer’s 12th number one album in France.[21] Farmer collaborated with American producer Martin Kierszenbaum and French DJ The Avener on the album, which also features a cover of «I Want You to Want Me», a song by American rock band Cheap Trick.[122] To promote the album and Stolen Car in the U.S., the singer was interviewed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon accompanied by Sting, and the two also performed a live rendition of the song.[123]

In 2017, it was announced that Farmer had signed a new record deal with Sony Music Entertainment France.[124] In January 2018, the single «Rolling Stone» was unveiled, making it her first release under her new label.[125] It was followed up by a duet with American singer-songwriter LP, entitled «N’oublie pas».[126] The song was co-written by LP, and the video, set in Iceland, marked the artistic return of Farmer’s long-time collaborator, Laurent Boutonnat. Farmer’s eleventh studio album, Désobéissance, was released in September 2018. The album was commercially and critically successful, topping the French album chart in its first week,[127] and being described as Farmer’s best album in 15 years.[23][128][129][130]

To promote the albums Interstellaires and Désobéissance, Farmer began a nine-date concert residency titled Mylène Farmer 2019 at the Paris La Défense Arena in June 2019.[131][132] A live album titled Live 2019 was released in October that year.[133]

In 2020, Farmer and Boutonnat started working with upcoming French singer Julia. Her album Passe… comme tu sais was released on 19 June 2020, featuring songs penned by Farmer and produced by Boutonnat.[134][135][136]

2020 also saw the premiere of Mylène Farmer — L’Ultime Création, a behind-the-scenes documentary about her 2019 residency concerts.[137] In order to promote the documentary, and a subsequent greatest hits album entitled Histoires de, the new single «L’âme dans l’eau» was announced, along with a music video consisting of footage from the upcoming documentary. A collection of live and studio recordings between 1984 and 2020, Histoires de debuted at number two on the French charts on 4 December 2020.[138]

In 2021, Mylène Farmer became a member of the jury at Cannes Film Festival.[139][140]

2022–present: Nevermore tour and L’emprise[edit]

Nevermore, the 2023 tour, had its posters revealed in July 2021.

In July 2021, several hints about Nevermore were given from her official YouTube channel. It showed motion videos of a crow’s eye, adapted from the album cover of L’autre… and a picture of Mylène Farmer that was taken from the En Concert album cover. There were three teasers: the first one showed the title Nevermore, the second one showed the title Nevermore 2023, and a few days after, it was revealed from the third teaser that Nevermore 2023 was indeed the name of her next stadium tour. It will consist of thirteen shows which will be held in France, Switzerland, and Belgium, in June and July 2023. The tour was also planned to go to Russia around August or September 2023 but was cancelled due to the current situation in the country. Tickets of the stadium tour were also available to be purchased after the announcement published on YouTube.

On 13 May 2022, Pascal Nègre, Mylène Farmer’s manager, confirmed in an Instagram story that Mylène Farmer is currently working on her new studio album along with musicians Woodkid, AaRon, Moby and Archive. The album is due to be released in late 2022.

On 26 August 2022, the song «À tout jamais», a song written by Woodkid, was released. It is the first single from the forthcoming album, with the music video being released on September 12. The Maxi Single of the song, which contains remixes, released in Vinyl, CD, and Digital Platforms on September 30. The album was revealed to be called L’Emprise in October 2022. The album was also followed by two other singles: «Rayon Vert»; a duet with AaRon, and «Rallumer Les Etoiles».

Artistry[edit]

Farmer’s influences include musicians, actors and literary figues. The singer adopted her stage name as an homage to Hollywood actress Frances Farmer, whose character always fascinated her.[141] Other cinematic figures Farmer says she is inspired by include Greta Garbo,[142] Michelle Pfeiffer,[143] Steven Spielberg,[144] and Andrei Tarkovsky.[145] In addition, she has named Depeche Mode, Kate Bush and Jacques Brel as musical influences.[146] In turn, Farmer’s work has influenced a number of French recording artists, including Christine and the Queens,[147] Damso[148] and Gims.[149]

Lyrical influences[edit]

Farmer is known for her poetic songwriting, which often features philosophical ideas, symbolism, transgression, religious imagery, alliterations, double entendres and neologisms.[150][151] Common topics of her lyrics include sex, death, religion and love.[151] Farmer’s literary influences include Charles Baudelaire, Edgar Allan Poe, Pierre Reverdy, Stefan Zweig and Søren Kierkegaard.[152]

Musical style[edit]

Musically, Farmer is usually described as a pop and French pop artist;[40] nevertheless, she is known for reinventing her style with every album cycle.[1][153] All her albums between 1984 and 2008 were produced by her collaborator, Laurent Boutonnat.[154] Her first albums, Cendres de lune, Ainsi soit je… and L’autre… feature dark synth-pop and new wave instrumentation. 1995 saw the release of Anamorphosée, which features more simplistic lyrics and pop rock-influenced music.[155] Innamoramento and Avant que l’ombre… are often described as merging acoustic instruments with electronic beats.[156] Farmer then experimented with electronica and club music on 2008’s Point de suture.[157] In 2010, Farmer released her first album without Laurent Boutonnat, Bleu noir, featuring songs produced by RedOne, Moby and British alternative band Archive.[19] The album saw Farmer return to the darker synth-pop and Europop production of her debut album.[19] For 2012’s Monkey Me, Farmer collaborated with Boutonnat in the studio one more time. Interstellaires, the singer’s tenth studio album shows influences of pop rock and adult contemporary styles, produced by French DJ The Avener and Martin Kierszenbaum.[158][159] On Désobéissance, Farmer collaborated with French DJ Feder, American singer-songwriter LP and American producer Mike Del Rio, marking a return to electronic dance music.[160]

Public image[edit]

In 1988, she refused to appear at the Victoire de la musique awards ceremony due to the behind the scenes hypocrisy[clarification needed] she experienced while rehearsing for the show.[161]

In November 1991, Laurent Berger, a disturbed man who had been stalking Farmer, entered the Polydor Records headquarters in Paris and held employees at gunpoint demanding to talk to her. After not being granted the singer’s address, the man killed the receptionist with a gunshot.[162] It is said that the incident contributed to Farmer’s absence in the media.[163]

Farmer is regarded as a gay icon.[164][165] Her status has been attributed to her lyrics, which often feature references to homosexual love and sexuality, and her tomboy image early in her career.[165] She publicly accepted her position as a gay icon in 2008 by saying «We’ve been following each other for many years, that’s important to me. I also think that I share with the gay public, as with other audiences, the feeling of being «different», a feeling that causes difficulty to live in this world.»[166]

In January 2015, following the Île-de-France attacks, Farmer declared her support for the Je suis Charlie movement.[167] In March 2020, Farmer’s management shared her drawing in support of doctors and nurses working in French hospitals amidst the COVID-19 pandemic,[168] and another unpublished drawing of hers was later auctioned to support the purchase of protective equipment for caregivers.[169]

Personal life[edit]

Farmer met American actor, singer and guitarist Jeff Dahlgren on the set of their 1994 movie Giorgino.[64] Following the commercial failure of the film, the couple relocated to Los Angeles.[64] Dahlgren played the guitar on the singer’s 1990s albums Anamorphosée and Innamoramento, and accompanied her on stage during her Mylenium Tour.[170] The couple ended their relationship in 1999.[171]

In 2002, Farmer began a relationship with French director and producer Benoît Di Sabatino [fr].[171][172] The couple met while creating the animated music video for Farmer’s single «C’est une belle journée».[171] Di Sabatino also directed the music video for «L’amour n’est rien…» in 2006 and «Appelle mon numéro» in 2008.[171]
The couple ended their relationship in 2022.[173]

Ville-d’Avray).

Point de suture».

Cendres de Lune.

Ainsi soit je …

L’Autre … и «Désenchantée» (1990–1992)

Anamorphosée (1992–1997)

Innamoramento.

Les mots (2001–2003)

Avant que l’ombre … (2004–2006)

Avant que l’ombre …

Point de Suture (2008–2010)

Bleu Noir (2010–2011)

Mylène Jeanne Gautier[1] (Template:IPA-fr; born 12 September 1961), known professionally as Mylène Farmer (Template:IPA-fr), is a Canadian-born French singer, songwriter, occasional actress, writer, and entrepreneur. She was born in Pierrefonds, Quebec, to a French family, and brought up in France.

She has sold more than 30 million records in France[2] and is among the most successful recording artists of all-time in France.[3] She holds the record for the most number one hits in the French charts, with eighteen to date – eight of which were consecutive.[4] Twelve of her albums have also reached number one in France.

Biography and career[]

Early years[]

Template:BLP sources section
Mylène Farmer was born in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada. Her parents, Max Gautier (originally from Marseille) and his wife Marguerite (born in Lennon, in Brittany) moved from France in the late 1950s as Farmer’s father pursued an engineering contract on a dam. Her family moved back to France when she was eight, settling in the Parisian suburb of Ville-d’Avray. When she first arrived in France, she took speech classes after her school declared her Québécois accent to be «improper» – this is why she now speaks with the accent of metropolitan France.[5] In her teenage years, Farmer was passionate about horse-riding, qualifying as a riding instructor at the equestrian centre in Saumur. At the age of 17, however, Farmer discovered acting and she left the stables to undertake a three-year course at the Cours Florent, a drama school in Paris. Changing her name to Mylène Farmer as a tribute to her idol, 1930’s Hollywood actress Frances Farmer, she began to earn a living as a model acting in several TV adverts such as those for Fiskars, Caisse d’Epargne etc.

In 1984, Farmer met Laurent Boutonnat, a young film student, after answering a newspaper advert for an actress for a small film he was working on. Farmer and Boutonnat became friends and forged a creative partnership, writing and producing the music. Boutonnat, whose ambition was to become a film director, became the creative force behind Farmer’s videos.

Farmer gained fame with songs featuring controversial yet poetic lyrics and explicit music videos: «Maman a tort» was about a young girl’s love for her female nurse. «Pourvu qu’elles soient douces» contains hints of sodomy; the video, set in the 18th Century, features caning. «Libertine» is said to feature the first full frontal nudity appearance by a singer on a major music video. «Que mon cœur lâche» was about love in the AIDS era; the video features a scene in which God tells Jesus he will not be sent to Earth again because the last time «was a disaster». The videos for «Beyond My Control» and «Je te rends ton amour» were banned because of their sexual and violent content. Later released as a video single, the latter became the biggest selling video single in France.

Debut (1984–1989)[]

After Boutonnat and Jérôme Dahan (a young songwriter) co-wrote the song, Farmer was auditioned and eventually chosen to record «Maman a tort» (one of the few songs not to be written by Farmer herself), which became a mild success in March 1984. The video, which cost the mere sum of 5000₣, became controversial, due to the song’s ambiguous lyrics (a woman falls in love with her female nurse).

Despite the minor success of her first two singles, Farmer, helped by Boutonnat, started working on her first album, Cendres de lune. Even though the album was almost entirely written by Boutonnat, it was then that it was decided that Farmer would write the lyrics to her songs — Boutonnat would write the music and direct the videos. «Libertine«, the album’s lead single, was released in March 1986 and set the tone for Farmer’s musical style. The sensual, romantic lyrics were inspired by 19th century literature. As for the video, which has a running time of over 10 minutes, Boutonnat was inspired by the film Barry Lyndon and the novels by Marquis de Sade, thus giving the video a cinematic style. Farmer, lit by candlelights, is shrouded in mystery and sexual ambiguity. It also was the very first video in which a French female singer appeared in full-frontal nudity. The following single, «Tristana«, also met with great success and its video carried the cinematic approach.

In 1988, Boutonnat and Farmer started to work on her follow-up album, Ainsi soit je… (a play on the French expression ainsi soit-il, meaning «so be It» or «amen»). This album, infused with a much darker atmosphere, is more sexually ambiguous than her previous one, featuring songs inspired by Farmer’s favourite authors, including the French romantic poet Charles Baudelaire and the American horror writer Edgar Allan Poe. The album sold 1.8 million copies[6] on the back of the No. 2 hit «Sans contrefaçon» as well as her first No. 1 hit, «Pourvu qu’elles soient douces«. The other singles «Sans logique» and the title song were also hits in France, while the Juliette Gréco cover «Déshabillez-moi» became a fan favourite. Ainsi soit je… was the best-selling female album in France of the 1980s.[7]

In spite of her drama courses, Farmer found it difficult to overcome shyness when facing an audience. She hesitantly agreed to tour in 1989. After test-singing in a small venue in Saint-Étienne, the singer went to Paris to perform at the Palais des Sports for a week in May. Following the positive response of the audience, she agreed to a full-scale 52-date tour throughout francophone Europe. A live album documenting the tour was released at the end of that year, titled En Concert. It featured a new song, «A quoi je sers» (What Am I Good For), in which she questioned the future of her career. The tour costumes were created by the famous French designer Thierry Mugler.

It was also during this period that it was noticed that Farmer rarely gave interviews or appeared in public, though she is now even less inclined to public exposure than at the time.[8]

L’Autre… and «Désenchantée» (1990–1992)[]

By the turn of the decade Farmer was a full-blown superstar in France, but it wasn’t until the release of her third album, L’Autre…, and single «Désenchantée» that she became iconic. The album, released on 8 April 1991, displayed a new image to her audience: more mature, more confident, with very short hair and a more defiant attitude (as evidenced in the videos for «Désenchantée» and particularly «Je t’aime mélancolie«, in which Farmer plays a professional boxer fighting a male opponent). The music had also evolved in comparison to her previous records. The lyrics now approached a larger scope of subjects such as religion («Agnus Dei»), politics («Désenchantée») and press criticism («Je t’aime mélancolie»).

«Désenchantée«, the album’s lead single, became a phenomenon in French pop music, striking a universal chord with its political lyrics. The song hit No. 1 in France, spending nine weeks atop of the chart. At the time, it was the best selling French single of all time (both in France and around the globe), according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It also spent six weeks at No. 1 in Belgium, made the Top 10 in Canada and the Top 20 in Austria and the Netherlands. It was accompanied by a video in which Mylène plays a rebelling prisoner in a facility which resembles a concentration camp or gulag.[9]

Following the phenomenal success of «Désenchantée«, Farmer released three more very successful singles from the album: «Regrets«, a gold-selling No. 3 duet performed with Jean-Louis Murat, «Je t’aime mélancolie» (No. 3) and «Beyond My Control» (No. 8), the latter having a blood-and-sex-charged video that was banned from airplay. The success of the singles helped their parent album sell 2 million copies,[6] having been certified Diamond.[10] It spent a then-record 20 weeks at the pole position of the French charts, as well as topping the chart in Belgium and making top 10 in Canada. It has become Farmer’s best selling studio album.

Prior to the release of the album’s third single on 19 November 1991[11] a disturbed man who had been stalking Farmer entered the Polydor Records headquarters in Paris and held employees at gunpoint demanding to talk to her. The man had previously written the singer some fan mail, which she did not respond to. He killed the receptionist.[12] Following this occurrence, Farmer shunned media attention and left France to live in Los Angeles for a few weeks.[13]

In late 1992, she released the remix album Dance Remixes, a two-disc set containing 14 remixes of the singer’s greatest dance hits plus a new song: the single «Que mon cœur lâche«. As usual, Farmer did not shy away from controversy; «Que mon cœur lâche», a song dealing with AIDS and sexual relations, is accompanied by a video directed by Luc Besson (the first time in the singer’s career that a video wasn’t directed by Boutonnat) in which Farmer plays an angel sent down to earth by God (who refuses to send Jesus again, stating that «last time it was a disaster») to save mankind from itself. The imagery in the clip references pop stars, condoms, prostitution, homosexuality and drug use. The single was also recorded in an English version, «My Soul Is Slashed«.

Giorgino (1992–1994)[]

«Que mon cœur lâche» would be the last single released by Farmer in 3 years. In the meantime the singer would star in a movie, as her longtime collaborator had written a script he had wanted to direct for a long time. The result was the ill-fated Giorgino (1994). The film, shot in English, was a huge critical and commercial flop. Budgeted at 80 million francs, it was seen by only 60,000 people and recovered only 1% of its budget.[14] One of the main reasons for the film’s flop was its length of over three hours. According to Farmer herself, the bad reception of Giorgino was particularly hard on Boutonnat, who was directing his first feature film,[15] something he would not do again for 13 years until the release of Jacquou le Croquant in 2007. Following the lukewarm reception of the film, Farmer decided to leave France to take a long break in the United States.[16]

Anamorphosée (1995–1997)[]

During her time in California, Farmer started to write her fourth studio album, Anamorphosée. The album was launched by «XXL«, a rock song with blasting electric guitars, and a video directed by Marcus Nispel featuring Farmer strapped to the front of a moving train. The single became her first to debut at No. 1. Anamorphosée debuted at No. 2 in the album charts and sold half a million copies in three months. The album continued to sell well with the release of «L’Instant X«, «California» (a jazzy-pop ballad bolstered with bass guitar featuring a highly acclaimed video directed by Abel Ferrara), «Comme j’ai mal» and «Rêver«, which helped the album reach No. 1 in January 1997 – 16 months after its release – gaining a Diamond certification. The album is the first to contain music written by Farmer («Tomber 7 fois…»).

In summer 1996, Farmer embarked on her second concert tour, which met with huge success. The corresponding live album, Live à Bercy, is currently the best-selling French live album ever. During the tour, Farmer sang a Raï version of Michel Polnareff‘s La Poupée qui fait non with Khaled, which was released as a promotional single from the live album and became a Top 10 hit in France. She had to stop and postpon some dates of the tour due an injury involving a prop and a dancer, breaking her arm.

Innamoramento and Mylènium (1998–2000)[]

Farmer returned in spring 1999 with her 5th studio album Innamoramento. The lead single «L’Âme-stram-gram» was a futuristic up-tempo techno-ballad with erotic lyrics accompanied by a Chinese-themed video in which Farmer commits suicide to save her twin. Both the single and the album went straight to No. 2 on the charts.[17] The album is certified Diamond in France.

The video for the second single, «Je te rends ton amour» sparked controversy because of its religious imagery, which was condemned by the Catholic Church and banned by many networks. Despite this, Farmer released a video single, which became the highest selling release of that kind in France.

In late 1999, Farmer embarked on her third concert tour, the Mylenium Tour, which set the record of the highest grossing tour by a non-English speaking artist. The stage of the show featured a huge pharaonic statue at the center of the stage from which she emerged and flew before being carried down by the hand of this very statue. During the tour, Farmer released the album’s third and fourth singles: «Souviens-toi du jour» and «Optimistique-moi«.

After «Innamoramento«, the final single from the album, she recorded «L’Histoire d’une fée, c’est…» for the animated film Rugrats in Paris: The Movie, and released her third live album and DVD documenting the Mylènium Tour along with «Dessine-moi un mouton«, the promotional single for the live CD of the show.

Alizée (2000–2004)[]

Template:Main article

In 2000, Farmer and Boutonnat had assembled songs and video ideas they felt appropriate for a younger, new star. They began the search for a female singer to break into the French charts – they found Alizée Jacotey, a 15-year-old contestant on the French television show Graines de stars. They wrote and produced Alizée’s albums Gourmandises and Mes courants électriques. Alizée’s biggest hit, «Moi… Lolita» reached the top of the charts and she became the most successful French singer that year. In 2001, Le Figaro announced Farmer as top earning French entertainer of the year thanks, in part, to her writing, recording, and producing credits of Alizée’s music, which earned 10.4 million €.[18][19]

Alizée’s image was crafted by Farmer and Boutonnat; she was allowed a few interviews of no more than 20 minutes and a limited number of promotional appearances. In 2005, after two successful albums and a concert tour, Alizée amicably parted ways with the duo to meet different songwriters and producers.[20]

In 2014, Alizée revealed plans to include a song named for the singer on her Blonde album. The song, written by Lionel Florence, tells the story of an obsessed fan. Alizée revealed in an interview that the song is meant to pay tribute and respect to Farmer. Although the two no longer work together, she mentioned that she is still a big fan.[21]

Les mots (2001–2003)[]

At the end of 2001, and seventeen years into her career, Universal issued Farmer’s first greatest hits collection: Les Mots whose title track and lead single, a duet with Seal, became an enormous hit. The music video of the song was the first one directed by Boutonnat since «Beyond My Control» and borrowed many influences from art. Les Mots was the best selling album of 2001 and 2002, and remains the best selling greatest hits album in France with more than 1.5 million sold. The album also featured new tracks and singles, including Top 10 hits «C’est une belle journée» and «Pardonne-moi«.

Avant que l’ombre… (2004–2006)[]

In December 2004, after a long period of silence, Farmer held a press conference announcing her new album, Avant que l’ombre… and the single «Fuck Them All» as well as a special 13-night concert engagement at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in January 2006. This era featured no further promotion, and marked a new level of reclusivity for the star, who simply stated «What I have to say is in my music». She also announced her new series of concerts in Paris-Bercy, a show designed by Mark Fisher. She explained that she could not tour due to the complex sets of the performances of the show, which featured two stages, a mobile bridge to link the two stages and a curtain of words written with water.

The album debuted and spent several weeks at No. 1, selling 800,000 copies[22] and going 2× Platinum, although its commercial success is considered inferior to her previous albums because she made little or no effort to promote it. Nonetheless, all five singles became Top 10 hits in France, while the single «L’amour n’est rien…» became a very big success in Russia.

As announced in her press conference, she returned to the stage in January 2006 for 13 dates in Paris-Bercy. A live album and concert DVD, Avant que l’ombre… à Bercy were released in December 2006. Within months, the DVD became the best-selling music DVD in France ever.[23]

After her concerts in Bercy, electronic musician Moby invited her to record a duet with him. Choosing «Slipping Away«, Farmer translated the lyrics herself to French, and the resulting single became a phenomenal success in French-speaking countries, becoming her 4th No. 1 single in France.

In 2007, Farmer’s long-time songwriting partner, Laurent Boutonnat, directed his second feature film, Jacquou le Croquant. Farmer recorded the theme song of the film, «Devant soi», for the end credits. During that period, she also worked on the French version of Luc Besson’s animated feature Arthur and the Minimoys, lending her voice to Selenia, the character voiced by Madonna in the international version. The movie was a box-office hit.

Point de Suture (2008–2010)[]

In March 2008, Universal confirmed Farmer would release her seventh studio album near the end of 2008, and embark on her fifth concert tour the following year, including two shows at the Stade de France. The record’s lead single, «Dégénération«, had a minimal electronic sound while its video marked the singer’s return to the scripted videos of the beginning of her career. The song became Farmer’s fourth number one solo single (and fifth overall, following «Slipping Away (Crier la vie)» with Moby).

The album, Point de Suture, released in stores on 25 August, followed suit debuting at No. 1 with over 100,000 copies sold in its first week in France. The electronic-driven album continues in the vein of Farmer’s previous work, featuring a mix of ballads and upbeat, synth-driven pop songs.

Farmer’s next four singles from the album, «Appelle mon numéro«, «Si j’avais au moins…«, «C’est dans l’air» and «Sextonik«, all became No. 1 hits in France, allowing Farmer to beat her own record. Farmer then had a record of nine No. 1 hits in France, more than any other artist in French music history. It is also the first time that all the singles from her album became No. 1 hits.

Meanwhile, in 2008, Farmer announced a new protégée in the vein of Alizée: Lisa, Farmer’s niece. Her lead single, «Drole de creepie», was released in September 2008, produced and written by Boutonnat and Farmer. The song accompanied the hit children’s series, Growing Up Creepie, and the video depicts Lisa dressed as Creepie Creecher. Unlike Farmer & Boutonnat’s previous side-projects, Lisa is marketed primarily to children.

Farmer’s sold-out tour began in May 2009 in Nice and ended in September 2009 in Brussels, garnering an extremely positive response from critics.[24] She also gave two concerts at the Stade de France, as well as other concerts in Russia, Belgium and Switzerland. The show was designed by Mark Fisher.

A new live album documenting her 2009 tour, N°5 on Tour, was released on 7 December 2009 and hit No. 1 position in the charts, being certified double-platinum in its first week of release. A DVD of her Stade de France concerts followed on 12 April 2010, instantly being certified Diamond.

Bleu Noir (2010–2011)[]

In the latter half of 2010, the media reported that Mylène Farmer would work with Line Renaud and Ben Harper in their respective new releases. After thirty years of absence, Line Renaud released her new album in November 2010, which contains «C’est pas l’heure,» a duet with Farmer, written by Farmer and Boutonnat. Also in November, Australian band INXS released the album Original Sin as a tribute to the late Michael Hutchence. Farmer covered «Never Tear Us Apart» with Ben Harper, featuring new lyrics in French written by Farmer.

It was announced surprisingly on 27 September 2010 that Farmer would be releasing a new single «Oui mais… non» to lead her next album. Unlike all the previous musical works by Farmer, Boutonnat was not included in the production or composition. Instead Farmer hired RedOne, known for his work with Lady Gaga to produce and write the music for the single. «Oui mais… non» was released to digital downloading markets on 11 October and hit No. 1 on the French download chart. Considering the decline in music sales, it’s her most successful single since 2002. This also makes her the only French singer to have number-one hits in four consecutive decades. The following singles, «Bleu Noir» and «Lonely Lisa«, hit the top of the charts too, expanding her record with twelve No. 1 singles.

The album Bleu Noir was released on 6 December 2010, produced by Farmer, RedOne, Moby and Archive. It entered the French album chart at No. 1 and remained at the top for three consecutive weeks. It was the 9th best selling album in France in 2010, with more than 300,000 copies sold in only three weeks. It has sold so far 600,000 copies[25] reaching Diamond status within three months of its release. It also broke the record for best debut in the Downloads Chart, with 9,000 copies sold.

Farmer’s second greatest hits collection, titled 2001.2011, was released in late 2011, featuring all of her hit singles recorded after 2001’s Les Mots.

Monkey Me (2012–2014)[]

In early 2012, Farmer said that she was recording a new album which was to be released in late 2012. A new single, «À l’ombre» had its radio premiere on 22 October 2012. It reached number one in the French Singles Chart, becoming her twelfth number-one solo single and thirteenth overall. Farmer’s album was titled Monkey Me and entered the French charts at number one on 11 December 2012, with sales of 147,000.

Farmer’s tour for the album, Timeless 2013, started in September 2013. Nearly 200,000 tickets were sold on the first day.[26] More than 500,000 people in total attended the tour.[27]

The live album of the tour was released in December, selling more than 100,000 copies in two weeks.[28] An eponymous film shot in widescreen[29] during the shows in Lyon premiered in French cinemas on 27 March.

Interstellaires (2015)[]

On 15 May 2015, Fragile (Anne Carrièr Ed.),[30] a photo-book by Sylvie Lancrenon, was published. It included 90 photos of Farmer taken by Lancrenon.

In August 2015, a new site was launched, announcing new material from Farmer. The first single to be released was «Stolen Car«,[31] a duet with Sting, who originally recorded the song on his 2003 album Sacred Love. The single reached No. 1 on the French and Belgium Wallonia singles chart[32] and on the Billboards Dance Club Songs.[33]

The album Interstellaires, including «Stolen Car», was released on 6 November 2015, becoming Farmer’s 12th number one album in France. It also reached number one in Belgium Wallonia and number three in Switzerland.

On 15 March 2017, it was announced that Farmer signed a new record deal with Sony Music Entertainment, leaving her previous label, Universal.Template:Citation needed

Désobéissance (2018)[]

On January 19 2018, the single «Rolling Stone» was released and entered the French charts at number one. The video was directed by Carole Denis. A new album was announced for fall. On June 22, a duet with LP, «N’oublie pas», was released, also entering the French charts at number one. The song was co-written by LP, and the video, set in Iceland, was directed by Laurent Boutonnat.
