Gravity Falls is an American mystery comedy animated television series created by Alex Hirsch for Disney Channel and Disney XD. The series follows the adventures of Dipper Pines (Jason Ritter) and his twin sister Mabel (Kristen Schaal) who are sent to spend the summer with their great-uncle (or «Grunkle») Stan (Hirsch) in Gravity Falls, Oregon, a mysterious town full of paranormal incidents and supernatural creatures. The kids help Stan run the «Mystery Shack», the tourist trap that he owns, while also investigating the local mysteries.

The series premiered on June 15, 2012, and ran until February 15, 2016.^[7][8][9] On November 20, 2015, Hirsch announced that the series would finish with its second season, stating that this was «100% [his] choice» and that «the show isn’t being cancelled- it’s being finished» and was simply reaching its natural conclusion.^[10][11] The series ended on February 15, 2016, with a one-hour finale, «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls».^[12][13] Hirsch later stated that he remains open to continuing the series with additional episodes or specials.^[14]

Gravity Falls received critical acclaim with praise directed at its writing, characters, voice acting, animation, humor, and multi-generational appeal.^[15][16] Additionally, the series won two Emmy Awards, three Annie Awards, and a BAFTA Children’s Award, among various other wins and nominations. Gravity Falls garnered high viewership amongst kids, teenagers, and young adults^[3] during its run and was Disney XD’s highest rated show in 2015^[17] and early 2016,^[18] while also setting several ratings records for the network.^[17][19] The series has attracted a broad and passionate fandom and has been considered to be an influence for many animated shows that followed it,^[20] and has also spawned a variety of official merchandise.

Premise[edit]

For their summer vacation, 12-year-old twins Dipper and Mabel Pines are dropped off from their home in Piedmont, California, to the fictitious town of Gravity Falls, Roadkill County, Oregon, to spend the summer with their great uncle Stan Pines (often shortened to Grunkle Stan), who runs a tourist trap called the «Mystery Shack». Things are not what they seem in this small town, and with the help of a mysterious journal that Dipper finds in the forest, they begin unraveling the town’s mysteries. With Wendy Corduroy, Mystery Shack cashier; Soos Ramirez, a friend of Dipper and Mabel and handyman to Grunkle Stan; plus an assortment of other characters, Dipper and Mabel always have an intriguing day to look forward to.^[1]

Production[edit]

Conception[edit]

Prior to working on the series, series creator Alex Hirsch’s primary inspiration growing up was the popular animated sitcom The Simpsons, where he observed that «animation could be funnier than live-action.^[25] That animation didn’t have to just be for kids. That it could be satirical and observational and grounded in a sense of character interaction».^[25] Hirsch graduated from the California Institute of the Arts, and was hired to work as writer and storyboard artist for the Cartoon Network series The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, where he was paired up with Pendleton Ward, the creator of Adventure Time.^[25] Afterwards, he moved on to co-develop the Disney Channel animated series Fish Hooks; shortly before he pitched Gravity Falls, which was subsequently green-lit.^[25]

Hirsch said he was at the California Institute of the Arts when he turned down DreamWorks Animation executive Jeffrey Katzenberg out of a desire to work for Disney.^[26] He first coined the concept for the show in an 11-minute low-budget student film that he made at the institute.^[27] Hirsch was called in to do a pitch for Disney Channel for a show based on the short pilot.^[27] Disney Channel bought the idea and the series premiered on June 15, 2012.^[8]

The series was inspired by Hirsch’s own childhood experiences and his relationship with his own twin sister growing up during their summer vacations.^[28] He placed many of his real-life experiences in the show, like living in Piedmont and trick-or-treating with his sister as kids.^[29] Dipper Pines is based on Hirsch’s memory of how it felt to be a kid. When Hirsch was around Dipper’s age, he «would record [him]self and play it backwards and try to learn to speak backwards».^[30] Hirsch described himself as «that neurotic kid who would carry 16 disposable cameras everywhere I went».^[28] Mabel Pines was inspired by his twin sister, Ariel Hirsch.^[31] According to Hirsch, just like Mabel, his sister «really did wear wacky sweaters and have a different ridiculous crush, every week.»^[28] In the series Mabel gets a pet pig, just like his sister had always wanted when she was a kid.^[32] Grunkle Stan was inspired by Hirsch’s grandpa Stan, who according to Hirsch «was a guy that told tall tales and would frequently mess with us to get a rise out of us. So, my family really inspired the characters on the show.»^[28]

Writing[edit]

In an interview with Oh My Disney, Hirsch claimed he already had the beginning, middle, and end of the story for Gravity Falls planned out when he first pitched the series. He originally thought the series would «be two or three seasons». However, Hirsch had never created a TV series before and after experiencing how «incredibly draining» it was, he initially wanted to end the series after season one and, ultimately, on a cliffhanger. After the series premiered and became a huge commercial success, Hirsch began to rethink his decision. Two people convinced him to return and do a second season: Jon Stewart, the former host of The Daily Show (and eventual Gravity Falls guest star), who told Hirsch that his kids loved the show, and Patrick McHale, who created the animated series Over the Garden Wall. McHale had been watching the series and told him: «Look, after that cliffhanger, you’ve got to finish it.» Hirsch decided that he had about ten more episodes left in him, so he went to the network, who said, «We only take seasons in twenties.» So he said, «Okay, one more season, … Before we started the [second] season, it said in my contract, before I put pen to paper, that this is my last season.» The studio agreed, under the condition that Hirsch could not tell anyone. As a result, Jason Ritter, who voices Dipper, did not know the series was ending until after he read the finale script, claiming that «when I read the finale I thought, this feels like, not just the season finale. It feels like a series finale.»^[33]

Hirsch explained in an interview with The A.V. Club that during the production of season one, that a typical episode was conceived in a room reserved for writers, where a simple synopsis was presented, and from then on dramatic structure was defined, and the plot was modified to include a character-driven subplot, which Hirsch expressed as «the hardest thing … to find a character story that actually uncovers, explores, or pushes tension—on something our characters care about—that is properly explored via the magic or monster or impossibility of the week.»^[25]

B- and A-stories were created and were given to a writer to produce an outline, which was then subsequently checked-off by Hirsch for feedback. The writer produced a draft from these edits, where more notes may have been given. Hirsch stated that he and creative director Mike Rianda may have personally created a draft for themselves before a final script was produced, in which the dialogue from the draft received from the writer was significantly revised; Hirsch stated that the revising process «is not a discredit to our writers—it’s just we have a very particular vision. In particular, I usually rewrite almost all of Dipper’s dialogue and most of Mabel’s dialogue, just because I have them in my head. Me and Mike will stay up for about 24 hours prior to the delivery of every script. We’ll take the weekend, we’ll work all night, we’ll drink Red Bull, we’ll sleep on the couch in shifts like maniacs, we’ll slap each other in the face.»^[25]

Animation[edit]

After a script was delivered, an episode then got translated into a storyboard, where feedback was received from Hirsch to the board artists if a certain element, such as a gag, did not work. Afterwards, a pitch for the episode was given to the network, where they did a read-through, and then the episode was either checked out by the network, or retooled in the small amount of time allocated before an animation studio must receive something to work with.^[25] The series was animated by Rough Draft Korea, Digital eMation and Yearim Productions.^[34] However, whenever a sequence was deemed too important for the outside animation studios to realize, it was animated in-house by storyboard artist and supervisor Dana Terrace.^[35]

Broadcast[edit]

Initial broadcast[edit]

The first twelve episodes of Gravity Falls aired in a regular weekly slot on Disney Channel starting in mid-2012, but subsequent episodes were broadcast without similar regularity; it took until August 2013 to broadcast the remaining eight episodes of the first season. The second season began airing a year later in August 2014, transitioning over to Disney XD, but again without any regularity as to when new episodes would be first broadcast. The first nine episodes aired from August to November 2014, the following two in February and March 2015, the next eight from July to November 2015, and the finale aired on February 15, 2016. According to Disney XD, as each episode took about six months of work to complete, they opted against stockpiling episodes to show weekly but instead take advantage of the serial nature of the show, broadcasting each episode as it was completed and making an event out of it.^[36] On April 2, 2018, reruns of the show started airing on Disney Channel, although reruns of the show still air on Disney XD.^[37]

International broadcast[edit]

The series began airing on Disney Channel Canada on September 1, 2015, following Corus Entertainment’s acquisition of Disney Channel rights in Canada. In Canada the show began airing on Disney XD starting on December 1, 2015, following the launch of Disney XD. The show started broadcasting in the United Kingdom and Ireland on July 20, 2012, as a preview and officially premiered on September 7, 2012.^[38] In Australia and New Zealand it previewed on August 17, 2012, and premiered on September 24, 2012.^[39] It also premiered in Southeast Asia on October 27, 2012.^[40] In India, it premiered on September 16, 2013.^[41] In the Middle East region, the series was previewed on October 19, 2012, and premiered on November 10, 2012.^{[citation needed]}

The series preview debuted in Canada on June 15, 2012, and premiered on July 6, 2012, on Family Channel, until January 2016 when it moved to the local Disney XD channel following Corus Entertainment’s acquisition of Disney Channel rights in Canada from Family’s owner DHX Media.^[42] In Australia, the show airs on Disney XD and 7mate^[43] while in Chile, the show was broadcast on Canal 13 on November 24, 2013, under its programming block CuBox. In the Philippines, the show was shown on TV5 beginning on May 4, 2014, while in Brazil, the show also began airing on Rede Globo on May 10, 2014.^[44] In Indonesia, the show premiered on RCTI on August 17, 2014.^[45]

Broadcast edits[edit]

The symbol on Grunkle Stan’s fez was changed from a crescent shape resembling the Islamic crescent to a fish-like symbol mid-way through the first season’s broadcast.^[46] The symbol represents his membership in the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel.^[46] When the series was released to Disney+, the crescent-shaped symbol was edited out entirely, leaving a symbol-less fez in the early episodes—later episodes featuring the fish-like symbol were unaffected.^[46] However, the crescent symbol remains in the thumbnails, and on the zodiac wheel in the title sequence.^[46] Hirsch drew attention to the change on Twitter. Disney has not commented on why it was removed.^[46] Sometime later, the symbol on the fez was restored.^[46]

In 2017, Disney Channel redubbed Louis C.K.’s minor role as «The Horrifying Sweaty One-Armed Monstrosity» in the 2015 episode «Weirdmageddon Part 1», as well as its 2016 follow-up episode and series finale, «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls», following the comedian’s admission of sexual misconduct. Series creator Alex Hirsch is now credited as voicing the character.^[47][48]

On March 27, 2018, Shout! Factory announced that they would release the complete series as a box set on July 24, 2018, on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.^[6][52] The box set is available in a «Collector’s Edition», which includes an exclusive bonus features disc.^[6][52] The complete series has only been released in the United States and Canada.^[6][52]

Video game[edit]

A video game was created for the series, titled Gravity Falls: Legend of the Gnome Gemulets.^[101][102] The game was released exclusively on Nintendo 3DS on October 20, 2015.^[101][102] It was developed and published by Ubisoft and produced by Disney Interactive Studios.^[101][102] The game is a platformer and uses the same graphics as the series.^[101][102]

Both seasons of Gravity Falls hold a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.^[103][104]
On Rotten Tomatoes, season one has an average critic score of 7.40 out of 10 based on 12 reviews.^[103] Season two has an average critic score of 8.80 out of 10 based on 8 reviews.^[104] The website’s critical consensus for season one reads: «Gravity Falls’ warm humor and bright performances elevate this children’s cartoon to a show for all ages»,^[103] while the website’s critical consensus for season two reads: «Gravity Falls continues to blend old fashioned storytelling with a modern sense of humor to create a uniquely enjoyable viewing experience.»^[104]

Brian Lowry of Variety stated: «The show has a breezy quality that should play to kids, and tickle some twinges of nostalgia among their parents.»^[8] Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times referred to the program as «…gently twisted, with some Disneyfied action and heart-warming folded in».^[105] In his review, David Hinckley of New York Daily News called Gravity Falls «quirky and endearing», and offered praise for the character of Mabel Pines.^[106] Matt Blum, writing for Wired, favorably compared the show to Cartoon Network’s Regular Show and Disney Channel’s Phineas and Ferb, hailing Gravity Falls as «clever, strange, and somewhat poignant».^[107] Erik Kain of Forbes called Gravity Falls «the best thing on TV at the moment,» saying «I don’t care how old you are, if you’re not watching Gravity Falls you’re missing out on some of the cleverest, most enjoyable television you can find».^[108] Kayla Cobb of Decider called Gravity Falls «one of the most structurally smart shows ever created».^[109] Matt Fowler from IGN called Gravity Falls «a quirky and gently twisted heart-warmer for all ages. Michelle Jaworski writing for The Daily Dot described Gravity Falls as «[A] classic summer story woven into a smart and addictive show tackling the paranormal, the supernatural, and the pains of growing up.»^[111] IndieWire‘s Michael Schneider said «Gravity Falls is a kids’ show so dense with mythology, pop culture jokes, Easter eggs, and mystery that grown-ups were often more invested.»^[112] Joey Keogh from Den of Geek wrote «Gravity Falls, is a spooky-cute must-watch for adults who never grew out of Halloween.»^[113] Donna Dickens from Uproxx said «Not only does Gravity Falls deal with the inexplicable supernatural occurrences in the town, the whole thing is just one big puzzle of secrets waiting for fans to uncover and solve.»^[114] Myles McNutt from The A.V. Club said «With a complex mythology and a deep lexicon of cultural references, there’s sophistication to the show’s epic storytelling that immediately drew the attention of a wider audience.»^[115] Liz Baessler writing for Film School Rejects said «Gravity Falls is an exceptional kids’ show — brilliant, hilarious, and carefully crafted.»^[116] Kevin Tash from Collider called Gravity Falls «one of the greatest things that Disney has ever produced in general.»^[117]

In 2015, Uproxx ranked Gravity Falls as the third Current Kids Cartoon That Adults Need to be Watching.^[114] In 2018, IndieWire ranked Gravity Falls at number 12 on their list of The 50 Best Animated Series Of All Time.^[112] In 2019, Yardbarker ranked Gravity Falls at number 21 on their list of The 25 Greatest Animated Shows of All Time.^[118] Also in 2019, IGN placed Gravity Falls at Number 19 on their list titled The 25 Best Adult Cartoon TV Series^[110] and The A.V. Club placed Gravity Falls at number 48 on their list of The 100 Best TV Shows of the 2010s.^[115]

Ratings[edit]

A special preview of the series following the Disney Channel Original Movie Let It Shine was watched by 3.4 million viewers.^[119] The series garnered high viewership on its fifth episode, which aired on July 13, 2012, and attracted 3.6 million viewers. On March 15, 2013, the episode «The Deep End» was watched by 4.5 million viewers after the premiere of Wizards of Waverly Place‘s The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex, becoming the highest-rated episode of the series.^[120]

Later moving on to Disney XD, the episode «A Tale of Two Stans» became the highest-rated telecast ever on Disney XD, with 1.91 million viewers.^[121] In addition to total viewers, «A Tale of Two Stans» also set a network record in kids ages 2–11 (1.036 million), boys ages 2–11 (686,000), boys ages 6–11 (574,000), kids ages 6–14 (1.279 million) and boys ages 6–14 (856,000).^[19] In 2015, Gravity Falls accounted for Disney XD’s top seven regular animated series telecasts of all time among kids ages 6–11.^[19] During the week of July 12–18, 2015, Gravity Falls was the top-rated program in its 8:30 p.m. timeslot across kids and boys ages 2–11, 6–11 and 6–14. That same week, it was also cable TV’s number 1 scripted telecast in total viewers, according to estimates from Nielsen Ratings.^[19][122]

Gravity Falls ranked as Disney XD’s number 1 series of 2015 across all target demographics^[17] with an average of 1.8 million viewers per episode.^[3] Additionally, Gravity Falls ranked as 2015’s third animated cable TV series in boys ages 9–14.^[17] In kids ages 6–11, the series averaged 654,000 viewers and 790,000 in kids ages 2–11. Among boys ages 6–14 it pulled in 680,000 views.^[3] That is strong viewership in Disney XD’s core demographics, but it also makes it clear that older teens and young adults make up more than half of the show’s audience according to Variety.^[3]

In February 2016, Gravity Falls was the number 1 regular series telecast on record across kids ages 6–11 (1.0 million/4.4 rating), boys ages 6–11 (642,000/5.3 rating), kids ages 2–11 (1.3 million/3.4 rating) and boys ages 2–11 (797,000/4.0 rating).^[18] The series finale «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls» beat the ratings record previously held by «A Tale of Two Stans» becoming Disney XD’s most-watched telecast ever, with 2.47 million viewers in the United States. «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls» also established new all-time network highs in kids ages 6–14 (1.5 million/4.1 rating) and boys ages 6–14 (909,000/5.0 rating).^[18] The all-day Gravity Falls marathon that preceded the premiere of «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls» generated 10.7 million unique total viewers, of which 5.4 million were kids ages 2–14.^[18]

Influence, legacy and industry impact[edit]

Gravity Falls has been considered to be an influence for many animated shows that followed it, including Steven Universe, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, The Owl House, Amphibia and Rick and Morty.^[20] Other examples of the show’s influence include LGBT representation and series-long story arcs as opposed to isolated single-episode stories.^{[123][20][124][125]} The show also maintains a loyal and passionate fandom, even years after the series finale.^[126][127] The creator of the show hid a variety of codes, cryptograms, backwards messages, and other secret clues for fans to find in every episode, which often contributed to the show’s mysteries and lore.^{[128][127][129][130][131]} Some have compared Gravity Falls to more adult-oriented mystery shows like Lost,^[3][132] Twin Peaks^{[128][126][129][133][134]} and The X-Files.^{[3][126][133]} While it was on the air, the show was Disney XD’s highest rated series, with an average of 1.8 million viewers per episode.^{[3][126][133]}

In the summer of 2016, Gravity Falls’ creator Alex Hirsch threw an international treasure hunt known as the «Cipher Hunt», the goal of which was to find the real-life Bill Cipher statue briefly glimpsed in the series finale.^{[135][136][137][138]} It ran from July 20 to August 3, 2016,^[139][140] and involved retrieving and decoding riddles and codes hidden in various locations worldwide.^[137][141] One clue involved a 2,000-piece jigsaw puzzle that took several days to complete with someone almost always working on it.^[142][143] On August 3, 2016, the statue was found in a forest in Reedsport, Oregon.^[141] While the first ones to the statue received various prizes,^[137][141] Hirsch made it clear that the hunt itself was the real treasure.^[136][144] On August 3, the statue was removed by authorities due to a property dispute^[137][145] and was temporarily held at the Reedsport police department while Hirsch arranged for it to be moved somewhere else.^[145] By August 5, the statue temporarily ended up in Bicentennial Park in Reedsport,^[146] before being permanently relocated to Confusion Hill in Piercy, California a few weeks later.^[145][147]

In celebration of the release of Journal 3 and the end of the Gravity Falls series, Oh My Disney and Cyclops Print Works teamed up with Gallery Nucleus^[148] in Alhambra, California to hold an official Gravity Falls art show, titled Farewell to the Falls: A Gravity Falls Art Show, on August 6–21, 2016.^{[149][150][151]} Creator Alex Hirsch along with other production staff and professional illustrators contributed new and original artwork to this exhibition. Some fans camped out overnight to see the show^[152] and some works of art sold for over $1,000.^[149]

On August 8, 2020, Disney Channel aired a Gravity Falls-inspired episode of the show Amphibia titled «Wax Museum». The episode served as a tribute to Gravity Falls and features Alex Hirsch in a voice role.^[153]

On September 11, 2020, a short was released on the Disney Channel YouTube channel called «Gravity Falls x Line Rider».^[154] The short is based on the Internet game Line Rider.^[154] It is the first of a new series of shorts for Disney.^[154] Disney partnered with Line Rider artists Mark Robbins, Ben Harvey and David Lu for the series.^[154]

On September 25, 2020, a Gravity Falls short was released on the Disney Channel YouTube channel called «Call Me Maybe Parody».^[155] In the short, Mabel sings «Call Me Mabel», a parody of Carly Rae Jepsen’s «Call Me Maybe».^[155] The short was released as a part of a series called «Broken Karaoke» where various Disney characters sing parodies of pop songs.^[155]

On October 3, 2021, the television show The Simpsons aired the episode «Bart’s in Jail!» which featured a brief cameo of Bill Cipher as one of Loki’s many incarnations, voiced by Alex Hirsch in a guest role.^[156]

Several former storyboard artists and production crew members who worked on Gravity Falls have gone on to create their own series and movies, including Matt Braly (a former director and storyboard artist who went on to create Amphibia),^[157] Dana Terrace (a former storyboard artist who went on to direct on the first season of Ducktales and create The Owl House),^[158] Chris Houghton (a former storyboard artist who went on to create Big City Greens with his brother Shane Houghton),^[159] Mike Rianda (a former creative director, and writer who went on to make the film The Mitchells vs. the Machines)^[160] and Shion Takeuchi (a former writer who went on to create Inside Job).^[161]

Future[edit]

On July 14, 2017, Hirsch revealed that he and Disney had talked about making a Gravity Falls film. Disney ultimately passed on the project, as the studio felt the show «wasn’t big enough to warrant [a film]»; Hirsch stated that he was still interested in the idea.^[199]

In February 2018, on the second anniversary of the series finale, Hirsch used a cipher to announce Gravity Falls: Lost Legends,^[200] a continuation of the Gravity Falls story in a new graphic novel that was later released on July 24, 2018.^[201]

In an interview with Inverse in March 2021, Hirsch expressed interest in continuing the story of Gravity Falls in the form of a video game that «is really, really in-depth to the lore of the series and includes new canon that has been in the periphery of the series.»^[202]

Gravity Falls is an American mystery comedy animated television series created by Alex Hirsch for Disney Channel and Disney XD. The series follows the adventures of Dipper Pines (Jason Ritter) and his twin sister Mabel (Kristen Schaal) who are sent to spend the summer with their great-uncle (or «Grunkle») Stan (Hirsch) in Gravity Falls, Oregon, a mysterious town full of paranormal incidents and supernatural creatures. The kids help Stan run the «Mystery Shack», the tourist trap that he owns, while also investigating the local mysteries.

The series premiered on June 15, 2012, and ran until February 15, 2016.^[7][8][9] On November 20, 2015, Hirsch announced that the series would finish with its second season, stating that this was «100% [his] choice» and that «the show isn’t being cancelled- it’s being finished» and was simply reaching its natural conclusion.^[10][11] The series ended on February 15, 2016, with a one-hour finale, «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls».^[12][13] Hirsch later stated that he remains open to continuing the series with additional episodes or specials.^[14]

Gravity Falls received critical acclaim with praise directed at its writing, characters, voice acting, animation, humor, and multi-generational appeal.^[15][16] Additionally, the series won two Emmy Awards, three Annie Awards, and a BAFTA Children’s Award, among various other wins and nominations. Gravity Falls garnered high viewership amongst kids, teenagers, and young adults^[3] during its run and was Disney XD’s highest rated show in 2015^[17] and early 2016,^[18] while also setting several ratings records for the network.^[17][19] The series has attracted a broad and passionate fandom and has been considered to be an influence for many animated shows that followed it,^[20] and has also spawned a variety of official merchandise.

Premise[edit]

For their summer vacation, 12-year-old twins Dipper and Mabel Pines are dropped off from their home in Piedmont, California, to the fictitious town of Gravity Falls, Roadkill County, Oregon, to spend the summer with their great uncle Stan Pines (often shortened to Grunkle Stan), who runs a tourist trap called the «Mystery Shack». Things are not what they seem in this small town, and with the help of a mysterious journal that Dipper finds in the forest, they begin unraveling the town’s mysteries. With Wendy Corduroy, Mystery Shack cashier; Soos Ramirez, a friend of Dipper and Mabel and handyman to Grunkle Stan; plus an assortment of other characters, Dipper and Mabel always have an intriguing day to look forward to.^[1]

Production[edit]

Conception[edit]

Prior to working on the series, series creator Alex Hirsch’s primary inspiration growing up was the popular animated sitcom The Simpsons, where he observed that «animation could be funnier than live-action.^[25] That animation didn’t have to just be for kids. That it could be satirical and observational and grounded in a sense of character interaction».^[25] Hirsch graduated from the California Institute of the Arts, and was hired to work as writer and storyboard artist for the Cartoon Network series The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, where he was paired up with Pendleton Ward, the creator of Adventure Time.^[25] Afterwards, he moved on to co-develop the Disney Channel animated series Fish Hooks; shortly before he pitched Gravity Falls, which was subsequently green-lit.^[25]

Hirsch said he was at the California Institute of the Arts when he turned down DreamWorks Animation executive Jeffrey Katzenberg out of a desire to work for Disney.^[26] He first coined the concept for the show in an 11-minute low-budget student film that he made at the institute.^[27] Hirsch was called in to do a pitch for Disney Channel for a show based on the short pilot.^[27] Disney Channel bought the idea and the series premiered on June 15, 2012.^[8]

The series was inspired by Hirsch’s own childhood experiences and his relationship with his own twin sister growing up during their summer vacations.^[28] He placed many of his real-life experiences in the show, like living in Piedmont and trick-or-treating with his sister as kids.^[29] Dipper Pines is based on Hirsch’s memory of how it felt to be a kid. When Hirsch was around Dipper’s age, he «would record [him]self and play it backwards and try to learn to speak backwards».^[30] Hirsch described himself as «that neurotic kid who would carry 16 disposable cameras everywhere I went».^[28] Mabel Pines was inspired by his twin sister, Ariel Hirsch.^[31] According to Hirsch, just like Mabel, his sister «really did wear wacky sweaters and have a different ridiculous crush, every week.»^[28] In the series Mabel gets a pet pig, just like his sister had always wanted when she was a kid.^[32] Grunkle Stan was inspired by Hirsch’s grandpa Stan, who according to Hirsch «was a guy that told tall tales and would frequently mess with us to get a rise out of us. So, my family really inspired the characters on the show.»^[28]

Writing[edit]

In an interview with Oh My Disney, Hirsch claimed he already had the beginning, middle, and end of the story for Gravity Falls planned out when he first pitched the series. He originally thought the series would «be two or three seasons». However, Hirsch had never created a TV series before and after experiencing how «incredibly draining» it was, he initially wanted to end the series after season one and, ultimately, on a cliffhanger. After the series premiered and became a huge commercial success, Hirsch began to rethink his decision. Two people convinced him to return and do a second season: Jon Stewart, the former host of The Daily Show (and eventual Gravity Falls guest star), who told Hirsch that his kids loved the show, and Patrick McHale, who created the animated series Over the Garden Wall. McHale had been watching the series and told him: «Look, after that cliffhanger, you’ve got to finish it.» Hirsch decided that he had about ten more episodes left in him, so he went to the network, who said, «We only take seasons in twenties.» So he said, «Okay, one more season, … Before we started the [second] season, it said in my contract, before I put pen to paper, that this is my last season.» The studio agreed, under the condition that Hirsch could not tell anyone. As a result, Jason Ritter, who voices Dipper, did not know the series was ending until after he read the finale script, claiming that «when I read the finale I thought, this feels like, not just the season finale. It feels like a series finale.»^[33]

Hirsch explained in an interview with The A.V. Club that during the production of season one, that a typical episode was conceived in a room reserved for writers, where a simple synopsis was presented, and from then on dramatic structure was defined, and the plot was modified to include a character-driven subplot, which Hirsch expressed as «the hardest thing … to find a character story that actually uncovers, explores, or pushes tension—on something our characters care about—that is properly explored via the magic or monster or impossibility of the week.»^[25]

B- and A-stories were created and were given to a writer to produce an outline, which was then subsequently checked-off by Hirsch for feedback. The writer produced a draft from these edits, where more notes may have been given. Hirsch stated that he and creative director Mike Rianda may have personally created a draft for themselves before a final script was produced, in which the dialogue from the draft received from the writer was significantly revised; Hirsch stated that the revising process «is not a discredit to our writers—it’s just we have a very particular vision. In particular, I usually rewrite almost all of Dipper’s dialogue and most of Mabel’s dialogue, just because I have them in my head. Me and Mike will stay up for about 24 hours prior to the delivery of every script. We’ll take the weekend, we’ll work all night, we’ll drink Red Bull, we’ll sleep on the couch in shifts like maniacs, we’ll slap each other in the face.»^[25]

Animation[edit]

After a script was delivered, an episode then got translated into a storyboard, where feedback was received from Hirsch to the board artists if a certain element, such as a gag, did not work. Afterwards, a pitch for the episode was given to the network, where they did a read-through, and then the episode was either checked out by the network, or retooled in the small amount of time allocated before an animation studio must receive something to work with.^[25] The series was animated by Rough Draft Korea, Digital eMation and Yearim Productions.^[34] However, whenever a sequence was deemed too important for the outside animation studios to realize, it was animated in-house by storyboard artist and supervisor Dana Terrace.^[35]

The first twelve episodes of Gravity Falls aired in a regular weekly slot on Disney Channel starting in mid-2012, but subsequent episodes were broadcast without similar regularity; it took until August 2013 to broadcast the remaining eight episodes of the first season. The second season began airing a year later in August 2014, transitioning over to Disney XD, but again without any regularity as to when new episodes would be first broadcast. The first nine episodes aired from August to November 2014, the following two in February and March 2015, the next eight from July to November 2015, and the finale aired on February 15, 2016. According to Disney XD, as each episode took about six months of work to complete, they opted against stockpiling episodes to show weekly but instead take advantage of the serial nature of the show, broadcasting each episode as it was completed and making an event out of it.^[36] On April 2, 2018, reruns of the show started airing on Disney Channel, although reruns of the show still air on Disney XD.^[37]

International broadcast[edit]

The series began airing on Disney Channel Canada on September 1, 2015, following Corus Entertainment’s acquisition of Disney Channel rights in Canada. In Canada the show began airing on Disney XD starting on December 1, 2015, following the launch of Disney XD. The show started broadcasting in the United Kingdom and Ireland on July 20, 2012, as a preview and officially premiered on September 7, 2012.^[38] In Australia and New Zealand it previewed on August 17, 2012, and premiered on September 24, 2012.^[39] It also premiered in Southeast Asia on October 27, 2012.^[40] In India, it premiered on September 16, 2013.^[41] In the Middle East region, the series was previewed on October 19, 2012, and premiered on November 10, 2012.^{[citation needed]}

The series preview debuted in Canada on June 15, 2012, and premiered on July 6, 2012, on Family Channel, until January 2016 when it moved to the local Disney XD channel following Corus Entertainment’s acquisition of Disney Channel rights in Canada from Family’s owner DHX Media.^[42] In Australia, the show airs on Disney XD and 7mate^[43] while in Chile, the show was broadcast on Canal 13 on November 24, 2013, under its programming block CuBox. In the Philippines, the show was shown on TV5 beginning on May 4, 2014, while in Brazil, the show also began airing on Rede Globo on May 10, 2014.^[44] In Indonesia, the show premiered on RCTI on August 17, 2014.^[45]

Broadcast edits[edit]

The symbol on Grunkle Stan’s fez was changed from a crescent shape resembling the Islamic crescent to a fish-like symbol mid-way through the first season’s broadcast.^[46] The symbol represents his membership in the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel.^[46] When the series was released to Disney+, the crescent-shaped symbol was edited out entirely, leaving a symbol-less fez in the early episodes—later episodes featuring the fish-like symbol were unaffected.^[46] However, the crescent symbol remains in the thumbnails, and on the zodiac wheel in the title sequence.^[46] Hirsch drew attention to the change on Twitter. Disney has not commented on why it was removed.^[46] Sometime later, the symbol on the fez was restored.^[46]

In 2017, Disney Channel redubbed Louis C.K.’s minor role as «The Horrifying Sweaty One-Armed Monstrosity» in the 2015 episode «Weirdmageddon Part 1», as well as its 2016 follow-up episode and series finale, «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls», following the comedian’s admission of sexual misconduct. Series creator Alex Hirsch is now credited as voicing the character.^[47][48]

On March 27, 2018, Shout! Video game[edit]

A video game was created for the series, titled Gravity Falls: Legend of the Gnome Gemulets.^[101][102] The game was released exclusively on Nintendo 3DS on October 20, 2015.^[101][102] It was developed and published by Ubisoft and produced by Disney Interactive Studios.^[101][102] The game is a platformer and uses the same graphics as the series.^[101][102]

Critical reception[edit]

Both seasons of Gravity Falls hold a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.^[103][104]
On Rotten Tomatoes, season one has an average critic score of 7.40 out of 10 based on 12 reviews.^[103] Season two has an average critic score of 8.80 out of 10 based on 8 reviews.^[104] The website’s critical consensus for season one reads: «Gravity Falls’ warm humor and bright performances elevate this children’s cartoon to a show for all ages»,^[103] while the website’s critical consensus for season two reads: «Gravity Falls continues to blend old fashioned storytelling with a modern sense of humor to create a uniquely enjoyable viewing experience.»^[104]

Brian Lowry of Variety stated: «The show has a breezy quality that should play to kids, and tickle some twinges of nostalgia among their parents.»^[8] Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times referred to the program as «…gently twisted, with some Disneyfied action and heart-warming folded in».^[105] In his review, David Hinckley of New York Daily News called Gravity Falls «quirky and endearing», and offered praise for the character of Mabel Pines.^[106] Matt Blum, writing for Wired, favorably compared the show to Cartoon Network’s Regular Show and Disney Channel’s Phineas and Ferb, hailing Gravity Falls as «clever, strange, and somewhat poignant».^[107] Erik Kain of Forbes called Gravity Falls «the best thing on TV at the moment,» saying «I don’t care how old you are, if you’re not watching Gravity Falls you’re missing out on some of the cleverest, most enjoyable television you can find».^[108] Kayla Cobb of Decider called Gravity Falls «one of the most structurally smart shows ever created».^[109] Matt Fowler from IGN called Gravity Falls «a quirky and gently twisted heart-warmer for all ages. Smart, satirical, and sweet. Gravity Falls was a one-of-a-kind gem.»^[110]

Michelle Jaworski writing for The Daily Dot described Gravity Falls as «[A] classic summer story woven into a smart and addictive show tackling the paranormal, the supernatural, and the pains of growing up.»^[111] IndieWire‘s Michael Schneider said «Gravity Falls is a kids’ show so dense with mythology, pop culture jokes, Easter eggs, and mystery that grown-ups were often more invested.»^[112] Joey Keogh from Den of Geek wrote «Gravity Falls, is a spooky-cute must-watch for adults who never grew out of Halloween.»^[113] Donna Dickens from Uproxx said «Not only does Gravity Falls deal with the inexplicable supernatural occurrences in the town, the whole thing is just one big puzzle of secrets waiting for fans to uncover and solve.»^[114] Myles McNutt from The A.V. Club said «With a complex mythology and a deep lexicon of cultural references, there’s sophistication to the show’s epic storytelling that immediately drew the attention of a wider audience.»^[115] Liz Baessler writing for Film School Rejects said «Gravity Falls is an exceptional kids’ show — brilliant, hilarious, and carefully crafted.»^[116] Kevin Tash from Collider called Gravity Falls «one of the greatest things that Disney has ever produced in general.»^[117]

In 2015, Uproxx ranked Gravity Falls as the third Current Kids Cartoon That Adults Need to be Watching.^[114] In 2018, IndieWire ranked Gravity Falls at number 12 on their list of The 50 Best Animated Series Of All Time.^[112] In 2019, Yardbarker ranked Gravity Falls at number 21 on their list of The 25 Greatest Animated Shows of All Time.^[118] Also in 2019, IGN placed Gravity Falls at Number 19 on their list titled The 25 Best Adult Cartoon TV Series^[110] and The A.V. Club placed Gravity Falls at number 48 on their list of The 100 Best TV Shows of the 2010s.^[115]

Ratings[edit]

A special preview of the series following the Disney Channel Original Movie Let It Shine was watched by 3.4 million viewers.^[119] The series garnered high viewership on its fifth episode, which aired on July 13, 2012, and attracted 3.6 million viewers. On March 15, 2013, the episode «The Deep End» was watched by 4.5 million viewers after the premiere of Wizards of Waverly Place‘s The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex, becoming the highest-rated episode of the series.^[120]

Later moving on to Disney XD, the episode «A Tale of Two Stans» became the highest-rated telecast ever on Disney XD, with 1.91 million viewers.^[121] In addition to total viewers, «A Tale of Two Stans» also set a network record in kids ages 2–11 (1.036 million), boys ages 2–11 (686,000), boys ages 6–11 (574,000), kids ages 6–14 (1.279 million) and boys ages 6–14 (856,000).^[19] In 2015, Gravity Falls accounted for Disney XD’s top seven regular animated series telecasts of all time among kids ages 6–11.^[19] During the week of July 12–18, 2015, Gravity Falls was the top-rated program in its 8:30 p.m. timeslot across kids and boys ages 2–11, 6–11 and 6–14. That same week, it was also cable TV’s number 1 scripted telecast in total viewers, according to estimates from Nielsen Ratings.^[19][122]

Gravity Falls ranked as Disney XD’s number 1 series of 2015 across all target demographics^[17] with an average of 1.8 million viewers per episode.^[3] Additionally, Gravity Falls ranked as 2015’s third animated cable TV series in boys ages 9–14.^[17] In kids ages 6–11, the series averaged 654,000 viewers and 790,000 in kids ages 2–11. Among boys ages 6–14 it pulled in 680,000 views.^[3] That is strong viewership in Disney XD’s core demographics, but it also makes it clear that older teens and young adults make up more than half of the show’s audience according to Variety.^[3]

In February 2016, Gravity Falls was the number 1 regular series telecast on record across kids ages 6–11 (1.0 million/4.4 rating), boys ages 6–11 (642,000/5.3 rating), kids ages 2–11 (1.3 million/3.4 rating) and boys ages 2–11 (797,000/4.0 rating).^[18] The series finale «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls» beat the ratings record previously held by «A Tale of Two Stans» becoming Disney XD’s most-watched telecast ever, with 2.47 million viewers in the United States. «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls» also established new all-time network highs in kids ages 6–14 (1.5 million/4.1 rating) and boys ages 6–14 (909,000/5.0 rating).^[18] The all-day Gravity Falls marathon that preceded the premiere of «Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls» generated 10.7 million unique total viewers, of which 5.4 million were kids ages 2–14.^[18]

Influence, legacy and industry impact[edit]

Gravity Falls has been considered to be an influence for many animated shows that followed it, including Steven Universe, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, The Owl House, Amphibia and Rick and Morty.^[20] Other examples of the show’s influence include LGBT representation and series-long story arcs as opposed to isolated single-episode stories.^{[123][20][124][125]} The show also maintains a loyal and passionate fandom, even years after the series finale.^[126][127] The creator of the show hid a variety of codes, cryptograms, backwards messages, and other secret clues for fans to find in every episode, which often contributed to the show’s mysteries and lore.^{[128][127][129][130][131]} Some have compared Gravity Falls to more adult-oriented mystery shows like Lost,^[3][132] Twin Peaks^{[128][126][129][133][134]} and The X-Files.^{[3][126][133]} While it was on the air, the show was Disney XD’s highest rated series, with an average of 1.8 million viewers per episode.^{[3][126][133]}

In the summer of 2016, Gravity Falls’ creator Alex Hirsch threw an international treasure hunt known as the «Cipher Hunt», the goal of which was to find the real-life Bill Cipher statue briefly glimpsed in the series finale.^{[135][136][137][138]} It ran from July 20 to August 3, 2016,^[139][140] and involved retrieving and decoding riddles and codes hidden in various locations worldwide.^[137][141] One clue involved a 2,000-piece jigsaw puzzle that took several days to complete with someone almost always working on it.^[142][143] On August 3, 2016, the statue was found in a forest in Reedsport, Oregon.^[141] While the first ones to the statue received various prizes,^[137][141] Hirsch made it clear that the hunt itself was the real treasure.^[136][144] On August 3, the statue was removed by authorities due to a property dispute^[137][145] and was temporarily held at the Reedsport police department while Hirsch arranged for it to be moved somewhere else.^[145] By August 5, the statue temporarily ended up in Bicentennial Park in Reedsport,^[146] before being permanently relocated to Confusion Hill in Piercy, California a few weeks later.^[145][147]

In celebration of the release of Journal 3 and the end of the Gravity Falls series, Oh My Disney and Cyclops Print Works teamed up with Gallery Nucleus^[148] in Alhambra, California to hold an official Gravity Falls art show, titled Farewell to the Falls: A Gravity Falls Art Show, on August 6–21, 2016.^{[149][150][151]} Creator Alex Hirsch along with other production staff and professional illustrators contributed new and original artwork to this exhibition. Some fans camped out overnight to see the show^[152] and some works of art sold for over $1,000.^[149]

On August 8, 2020, Disney Channel aired a Gravity Falls-inspired episode of the show Amphibia titled «Wax Museum». The episode served as a tribute to Gravity Falls and features Alex Hirsch in a voice role.^[153]

On September 11, 2020, a short was released on the Disney Channel YouTube channel called «Gravity Falls x Line Rider».^[154] The short is based on the Internet game Line Rider.^[154] It is the first of a new series of shorts for Disney.^[154] Disney partnered with Line Rider artists Mark Robbins, Ben Harvey and David Lu for the series.^[154]

On September 25, 2020, a Gravity Falls short was released on the Disney Channel YouTube channel called «Call Me Maybe Parody».^[155] In the short, Mabel sings «Call Me Mabel», a parody of Carly Rae Jepsen’s «Call Me Maybe».^[155] The short was released as a part of a series called «Broken Karaoke» where various Disney characters sing parodies of pop songs.^[155]

On October 3, 2021, the television show The Simpsons aired the episode «Bart’s in Jail!» which featured a brief cameo of Bill Cipher as one of Loki’s many incarnations, voiced by Alex Hirsch in a guest role.^[156]

Several former storyboard artists and production crew members who worked on Gravity Falls have gone on to create their own series and movies, including Matt Braly (a former director and storyboard artist who went on to create Amphibia),^[157] Dana Terrace (a former storyboard artist who went on to direct on the first season of Ducktales and create The Owl House),^[158] Chris Houghton (a former storyboard artist who went on to create Big City Greens with his brother Shane Houghton),^[159] Mike Rianda (a former creative director, and writer who went on to make the film The Mitchells vs. the Machines)^[160] and Shion Takeuchi (a former writer who went on to create Inside Job).^[161]

Future[edit]

On July 14, 2017, Hirsch revealed that he and Disney had talked about making a Gravity Falls film. Disney ultimately passed on the project, as the studio felt the show «wasn’t big enough to warrant [a film]»; Hirsch stated that he was still interested in the idea.^[199]

In February 2018, on the second anniversary of the series finale, Hirsch used a cipher to announce Gravity Falls: Lost Legends,^[200] a continuation of the Gravity Falls story in a new graphic novel that was later released on July 24, 2018.^[201]

In an interview with Inverse in March 2021, Hirsch expressed interest in continuing the story of Gravity Falls in the form of a video game that «is really, really in-depth to the lore of the series and includes new canon that has been in the periphery of the series.»^[202]

Близнецов Диппера и Мейбл Пайнс родители на лето сплавили в заштатный орегонский городок Гравити-Фоллс, к их двоюродному деду Стэнфорду (которого дети зовут «дядя Стэн»). Стэн владеет «Хижиной Чудес» — кунсткамерой с нагло-фальшивыми экспонатами, на которые, тем не менее, туристы ведутся. К близнецам он относится как к бесплатной рабочей силе, и лето обещает быть неимоверно скучным. Но в один прекрасный день Диппер находит в лесу тайник с загадочным дневником — под номером 3 и с шестипалой рукой на обложке. Выясняется, что окрестности Гравити-Фоллс кишмя кишат самыми настоящими чудесами, монстрами и аномалиями, в чём герои очень скоро убеждаются на личном опыте — их каникулы резко становятся полны приключений, находок, скандалов, интриг, расследований, спасения мира в разных масштабах и просто дуракаваляния. Самая главная тайна, занимающая Диппера, — это личность и судьба Автора дневников. Впрочем, уже в первой серии оказывается, что и дядя Стэн — человек-загадка в буквальном смысле.

• Диппер Пайнс (буквально «Ковш Cоснов») — умный и серьёзный 12-летний мальчик, любитель детективов, тайн и загадок. В первой серии находит дневник № 3 и ставит своей целью исследовать паранормальный мир Гравити-Фоллс и найти Автора. Заботится о своей сестре и часто жертвует своими интересами ради неё. Увы, как и многие «ботаники», Ковшик обладает заниженной самооценкой и часто рвётся доказать собственную крутизну, даже если доказывать уже не надо (постепенно вырастает из этого). Безнадёжно влюблён в Венди и всё никак не может ей признаться. Своё прозвище получил из-за родимого пятна в форме ковша Большой Медведицы (англ. Big Dipper) на лбу, настоящее его имя — Мэйсон (Mason — в оригинале его имя из-за многозначности является каламбуром со словами «масон» и «каменщик»).
• Мейбл Пайнс — сестра-близняшка Диппера, девчушка-попрыгушка. На пять минут старше его, но ведёт себя обычно так, как будто на пять лет младше, благодаря чему влипает в приключения едва ли не чаще брата. Неисправимая оптимистка; несмотря на доброе сердце, иногда бывает довольно эгоистичной (почти всегда), особенно по отношению к Дипперу, хотя и не со зла (нередко именно что желая добра). Там у него большая загадочная машина и дневник номер 1, с помощью которого он пытается её запустить.
• Хесус^[3] «Зус» Альзамирано Рамирес — подсобный рабочий в Хижине (уборщик, электрик, сантехник, грузчик и чесальщик спины Стэну). Пухлый (но на удивление сильный и проворный) 22-летний раздолбай, живущий с бабушкой и свободное время проводящий за видеоиграми и просмотром аниме (впрочем, по ходу событий находит себе девушку). Довольно умён (по крайней мере, жанрово смекалист), но обычно плывёт по течению. Дружит с детьми и всегда готов помочь, боготворит Стэна и мечтает унаследовать Хижину чудес, что в итоге и происходит.
• Венди Кордюрой — 15-летняя дочь лесоруба, «работающая» в хижине кассиром. Акселератка, по росту выглядит почти взрослой, силушкой явно пошла в нереально сурового батяню, хотя выглядит обманчиво хрупкой (горе тому, кто повёлся). Рыжая и, согласно комментариям автора, зеленоглазая, хладнокровная и своя в доску… но записная лентяйка и пофигистка (это защитный механизм — её гиперактивная семейка кому угодно нервы растреплет). Постоянно отлынивает от работы, но в любой момент готова сорваться в очередное приключение с близнецами. Знает о чувствах Диппера, но считает, что для него «старовата», хотя и очень ценит его как друга.
• Автор дневников — загадочный учёный муж, исследовавший аномалии Гравити-Фоллс и внезапно пропавший. Его личность — одна из основных загадок первого сезона сериала. Имеет по шесть пальцев на руках и ногах. Он — настоящий Стэнфорд (или просто Форд) Пайнс, брат-близнец дяди Стэна (который на самом деле Стэнли — ну не было у их папаши воображения) и настоящий владелец Хижины. Тридцать лет назад построил Межвселенский портал, в который его и засосало, а Стэнли с тех пор жил под его именем, пытаясь вернуть его обратно, и таки преуспел.

Антагонисты[править]

• «Малыш» Гидеон Глифул — девятилетний вундеркинд-экстрасенс и более удачливый конкурент Стэна. На первый взгляд кажется шарлатаном, но всё же владеет некоторыми силами… точнее, дневником номер два, из которого и черпает заклинания. Влюблен в Мейбл, пытается любой ценой заполучить её и остальные дневники. По сравнению со следующим злодеем из списка — самоуверенный мерзавчик.
• Билл Шифр (или Сайфер) — крайне могущественный и опасный демон из измерения снов. Выглядит как жёлтый треугольник с одним глазом (который в то же время рот), галстуком-бабочкой и шляпой-цилиндром. Обладает абсолютно свихнутым моральным компасом и полным отсутствием эмпатии. Пытается захватить наш мир. Образцово-показательное сочетание полного чудовища и великолепного мерзавца.
• Агенты правительства Пауэрс и Триггер. Исследуют аномалии Гравити-Фоллс. Долгое время следили за семьёй Пайнсов (особенно за Стэном). Они также хотели арестовать Стэна и отвезти Диппера и Мейбл в детский приют, потому что верят, что Стэн является суперзлодеем мирового класса и хочет запустить машину апокалипсиса, а также не проявляет никакой любви к детям. Они отчасти правы: хоть Стэн и искренне любит детей, у него реально есть машина, которая может уничтожить мир, однако она при этом не является машиной апокалипсиса: это портал, с помощью которого Стэн надеется вернуть своего брата. После возвращения Форд стирает им память и уничтожает все данные об их отделе.

• Старик Фиддлфорд Аадрон Макгакет — городской сумасшедший. Живёт на свалке, женат на еноте, хобби — строить из подручного хлама гигантских роботов и безобразничать в лесах. Работал с Автором, помогал ему строить портал, но в момент запуска был затянут на ту сторону. От увиденного повредился умом, изобрёл стиратель памяти и основал Общество Слепого Глаза, стирающее людям память об аномалиях Гравити-Фоллс. Не без помощи героев возвращает себе память и рассудок. Имеет взрослого сына, с которым отношения у него прескверные, но после Странногеддона они помирились.
• Мужик Дэн Кордюрой — отец Венди и трёх её братьев, дровосек и Настоящий Мужык. Могуч, вонюч, волосат, настолько суров, что ловит рыбу голыми руками (скорее всего, отсылка к стереотипному гризли).
• Тайлер Кьютбикер — маленький щуплый байкер, тусующийся с Дэном и при виде насилия скандирующий: «Бей его, бей его!» Во втором сезоне стал мэром города.
• Шериф Блабс и помощник Дурланд — условно-компетентная полиция городка. Геи, любят друг друга.
  • По другой версии, они отец и сын, ага, негр и белый, видимо приёмные. Версия существует, видимо, для выпила гомосексуальщины, вот только их диалоги в таком случае куда как менее приемлемы.
• Бабулита Рамирез — бабушка Зуса. Ненавидит его отца абсолютно справедливо: этот мерзавец так ни разу и не нашел времени навестить сына.
• Ленивая Сьюзен — хозяйка местного кафе. На неё засматривался Стэн, в конце концов пригласил её на ужин… а потом не знал, как от неё отделаться.
• Бад Глифул — отец Гидеона, бизнесмен. Относительно сына даже неплохой человек, но в серии про выборы поневоле оказался противником Стэна.
• Робби Валентино — гот-одноклассник Венди и её бойфренд в нескольких сериях (и, соответственно, заклятый соперник Диппера).
• Друзья Венди, Нейт, Ли, Томсон и Тэмбри — компания подростков, с которыми «зависает» Венди и, иногда, Диппер и Мейбл. Тэмбри стала девушкой Робби, и у них все хорошо.
• Шандра Хименез — привлекательная телеведущая и журналистка местного канала новостей.
• Тоби Решительный — страшный, как ядерная война, редактор газеты «Сплетник Гравити-Фоллс». Влюблен в Шандру Хименес.
• Престон Нортвест — потомок фальшивого основателя города, богатый сноб, ни во что не ставящий других людей (включая других богачей и собственную дочь). В чём-то даже похуже Гидеона, но активно не злодействует (злодействует пассивно в полутора сериях, в итоге оказывается жестоко посажен в лужу).
• Пасифика Нортвест — дочь Нортвестов, голубоглазая блондинка, примерная ровесница Диппера и Мейбл. Начинает как стереотипная альфа-сука, позже выясняется, что благодаря «любящим» родителям у неё весьма тяжёлое детство, и с подачи Диппера она становится на путь к исправлению.

Шкажошные шушества и прочие чудики[править]

• Гномы — «Маленькие человечки в остроконечных шляпах, живут в лесах, слабость — неизвестна садовый пылесос». Изрядные козлы, хотя в принципе договороспособны.
• Живогрыз — аналог лох-несского чудовища, обитающий в местной реке. Оказывается роботом производства Макгакета. Настоящий Живогрыз ходит ближе ко дну и лишний раз не показывается.
• Восковые фигуры — волшебные проклятые восковые фигуры, оживающие каждый раз, когда луна «восковеет»^[4]. Стэн украл их из гаражной распродажи и использовал как приманку для туристов, но после того, как их популярность пропала, он их закрыл. После этого они его возненавидели и захотели убить. Их лидер — восковой Шерлок Холмс.
• Ма и Па Даскертоны — призраки пожилой пары, которые просто ненавидят подростков из-за их неуважения к старшим, плохого поведения, а ещё потому что подростки в буквальном смысле убили их рэпом, вызвав у них сердечные приступы. Но при этом они дружелюбны по отношению к детям, которые не считаются подростками, и будут согласны отпустить их друзей-подростков, если те станцуют им весёлый танец, что Диппер и сделал.
• Гремоблин — огромный злобный монстр. Как и следует из названия — полугремлин-полугоблин. Любой, кто посмотрит ему в глаза, увидит свой худший кошмар. Его собственный худший кошмар — одряхлеть как отец.
• Мужикотавры — минотавры с зашкаливающим уровнем тестостерона и мачо-мужикизма. Не особо умны, но и не злы. Слово Божие гласит, что у них есть один женотавр, которую мужики боятся до икоты. Пруф здесь.
• Мультимедведь — говорящий медведь со множеством голов, злейший враг мужикотавров, потому что слушает «девчачью» музыку. А ещё он массажист по образованию.
• Клоны Диппера — клоны Диппера, созданные копировальным аппаратом Стэна. Разъедаются водой. Среди них выделяются два клона — Тайрон, первый клон Диппера, и Замятыш, который выглядит, как если бы Диппер был деформирован и помят как бумага. Ополчились против Диппера, когда тот перестал следовать плану, как пригласить Венди на танец, однако Тайрон и Диппер смогли в конце концов подружиться и поговорить друг с другом, после чего Тайрон случайно убил себя, выпив газировку. Также клоны Диппера 3 и 4 смогли выжить и сбежать…до первого дождя, впрочем, они предусмотрительные оказались и ходят по лесу в дождевиках
• Рамбл Макскёрмиш — протагонист аркадной игры-файтинга «Fight Fighters», который хочет отомстить за своего отца, которого убил Доктор Карате, причём не первый раз. Диппер привёл его в реальный мир с помощью одного чит-кода, чтобы использовать его как своего телохранителя, однако он решил убить Робби из-за того, что он решил, что тот убил отца Диппера. Вернулся в финале благодаря Странногеддону.
• Летоуинский Ловкач — таинственный тощий гуманоид в маске, который ест детей, не ценящих дух Летоуина. Целиком состоит из выброшенных конфет из Летоуина, которых сочли невкусными. Был съеден Зусом, чему был очень рад, т. к. тот счёл его вкусным, чего ему так хотелось.
• Русалдо — мальчик-русал, очередной возлюбленный Мейбл, а также первый парень, с которым она поцеловалась. Спустя 13 серий он был вынужден жениться на королеве ламантинов, чтобы предотвратить гражданскую войну, к большому разочарованию Мейбл.
• Птеродактиль — птеродактиль, который освободился из расплавленного янтаря. Имеет детёныша, которого хочет прокормить, и для этого похитил Пухлю.
• Лилигольферы — маленькие человечки, живущие в местном клубе по минигольфу. Не ведитесь на их забавную внешность, они те ещё сволочи.
• Квентин Трембли — восьмой с половиной президент США и настоящий основатель Гравити-Фоллс, вымаранный из истории за свой идиотизм. Дожил до наших дней, замуровавшись в куске арахисового шербета.
• Блендин Блендин — незадачливый сотрудник Полиции Времени из будущего, в чью задачу входит ликвидация временных аномалий. Обычно у него воруют машину времени (один раз вместе с телом), тут-то и начинаются аномалии.
• Зайлер и Краз — два парня, нарисованные в стиле 80-х и являющиеся персонажами фильма «Dream Boy High». Мейбл считает их идеальными парнями. Были созданы из воображения Мейбл. Вернулись в Мейблэнде, и в отличие от остальных жителей Мейблэнда, не стали злыми, поскольку они уже появлялись раньше в воображении Мейбл.
• Зомби — ожившие мертвецы, которые едят мозги и заражают укусом, однако заражённые сохраняют интеллект. • Общество Слепого Глаза — секретное общество, стирающее память жителям Гравити-Фоллс об аномалиях, хотят ли они этого или нет. Возглавляются Слепым Глазго (в оригинале — Blind Ivan). Были распущены, когда устройство, с помощью которого они стирали всем память, было использовано против них, чтобы они забыли об обществе. Общество было основано Фиддлфордом Макгакетом.

Тем Нортвестом, сдержавшим обещание, была Пасифика. Предположительно, он является родственником Венди по имени Арчибальд Кордюрой, так как они выглядят очень похоже.
• Вероятник Мерзейший — злой волшебник из настольной игры «Подземелья, подземелья и ещё подземелья». Был призван в реальный мир кубом с бесконечным числом граней. Хочет съесть мозги Диппера и Форда, поскольку те являются одними из лучших игроков в «Подземелья, подземелья и ещё подземелья» в своём мире.
• Дарлин — владелица самой большой туристической ловушки, которая конкурирует со Стэном. Она же одна из арахноморфов — гигантских пауков, способных перевоплощаться в людей, а также высасывать их жизненные соки, а её туристическая ловушка — это способ заманивания туристов, чтобы питаться ими. • Сорватники — демонические друзья-подчинённые Билла, которых тот притащил из своего измерения с началом Странногеддона.
• Чудовищная однорукая потная голова — массивная человеческая голова с рукой, растущей из верхушки там, где должна быть лысина. Притащилась в Гравити-Фоллс с началом Странногеддона. Хочет, чтобы люди залезли к ней в рот, и активно просит этого, однако те постоянно сбегают или отказываются от этого (она берёт «нет» как ответ).
• Жители Мейблэнда — существа, населяющие Мейблэнд — страну, напоминающую рай, но на самом деле это тюрьма-ловушка, созданная Биллом Шифром во время Странногеддона. Были уничтожены вместе с Мейблэндом, когда его пузырь был проткнут гигантской иглой.

• OOC — баллотируясь в мэры, Дядя Стэн внезапно начал говорить что думает. И это Стэн, который не врать вообще не может?
• А двести двадцать не хочешь? — ну давайте, попробуйте-ка обидеть кого-нибудь из Пайнсов!
• Ай, молодца!: сквозной сюжет наполовину состоит из цепочки ай-молодцов и наполовину — из попыток разгрести последствия.
• Ай, молодца, злодей!: Билл почти убедил Мэйбл отдать ему дневник, но некстати ляпнул про жертвы ради других…
• Апокалиптический маньяк — Билл. В измерении кошмаров ему скучно, и он хочет захватить наше и устроить Странногеддон. В трёх последних сериях устраивает-таки.
• Ахиллесова пята — слабое место Билла — его единственный глаз.
• Ахиллесова фигня — Гидеон панически боится щекотки. Билла тоже удалось нейтрализовать с её помощью, когда он завладел телом Диппера.
• Бездна времени: представьте себе, сколько Вселенных пережил Билл Шифр — и всё для ради чего? Чтобы получить в глаз от старого жулика?
• Безопасная пытка — Билл пытает Форда мощным электрическим разрядом, надеясь выбить из него нужную информацию. При этом зачем-то раздевает пленника по пояс, хотя никакой необходимости в этом нет. С учётом безграничных возможностей Билла, сцена выглядит почти OOCом. Куда подевалась хваленая нездоровая фантазия демона?
  • А что он может сделать? Применить любимый приём — залезть в башку без разрешения, чтобы прочитать память напрямую не получится, пластина в черепе мешает; превратить во что-нибудь эдакое нельзя, информацию нужна достоверная, а спятивший Форд бесполезен; шантажировать родными — Билл о них банально забыл, вспомнив лишь когда в его крепость постучали; а больше ничего и не остаётся, только причинять боль, да и то умеренную, чтобы Форд опять же не свихнулся.
• Безумная клёвость: В финале Хижина чудес оказывается защищена от магии Билла, но не сидеть же в ней бесконечно? Решение: под руководством Макгакета переоборудовать домик в гигантского робота и идти выносить Билла!
• Безумная тролльская логика — Макгакет давит педаль в другое измерение.
• Бесстрашный журналист: Шандра Хименез в финале ведёт репортаж прямо из логова злодеев.
• Бестолковая полиция — Дурланд и Блабс. В основном они дурачатся и закрывают глаза на многие поступки как главных героев, так и жителей города. Исключение — эпизод «Сокровища вкратце», где эта парочка проявила себя вполне компетентными полицейскими, выполнявшими долг по сохранению правительственной тайны.
• Близнецы меняются местами — Стэн и Форд для победы над Биллом.
• Боди-хоррор — из мелкого и не слишком пугающего: клон Диппера «Замятыш», сцена исчезновения вечно кричащей головы и один из обликов Перевёртыша, когда он сочетает внешность сразу Мэйбл и Диппера. Из по-настоящему жуткого — судьба Престона Нортвеста в восемнадцатой серии второго сезона.
• Бой-девка: Мейбл (иногда), Гренда (постоянно), Венди (на грани между бой-девкой и бой-бабой).
• Бонус для гениев: те самые шифровки, намёки и подсказки. Поначалу Хирш и компания старались не сильно увлекаться ими, но были приятно удивлены количеством зрителей, решивших загадки, и во втором сезоне ушли в отрыв.
• Вертикальные зрачки: такие зрачки у тех, в кого в данный момент вселился Билл.
• Вечная загадка: судя по третьему дневнику, Автор пытался выяснить, что же у гномов под их остроконечными колпачками и почему они их никогда не снимают. Но это так и остаётся загадкой.
  • На самом деле там ничего необычного. Это видно в одном из кадров.
• Вечный ребёнок — Зус и в какой-то степени Мейбл. А также Дитя времени и Билл Шифр — с ударением на «вечный». По словам Хирша, «Билл живёт уже триллион лет, но не повзрослел ни на день».
• Всегда готов: Дэн Кордюрой каждое Рождество устраивает своим детям тренировку на случай Апокалипсиса. Его дочери эта наука точно пригодилась. А ему самому — нет.
• Все оттенки белого: в серии «Не тот, кем кажется». Стэн действительно совершил ряд преступлений, но это было сделано для того, чтобы вернуть своего брата, который пропал в другом измерении. Федералы, может, и ошибались в намерениях Стэна, но они имели полное право задерживать парня, который совершил кучу преступлений, таких, как кража токсичных отходов. Диппер и Мейбл едва не разрушили воссоединение Стэна с его братом, но они пытались остановить устройство, которое, как они знали, могло уничтожить мир.
• Вундеркинд — брат и сестра Пайнс, правда, каждый в своей области. Диппер — логик, любитель точных наук и интеллектуальных игр, способен рассчитать траекторию полета мяча. Мейбл — безбашенная художница, каждый день вяжет новый свитер (некоторые со встроенной электроникой) и может с первой попытки изваять восковую статую.
• Выходец из кошмара/Чужеродное чудовище — Билл Шифр сотоварищи, а также то, во что Странногедон рандомно прекращает случайные объекты в городе и окрестностях.
• Гладить собаку: Гидеон искренне заботится о своих сокамерниках, а они — о нём.
• Говорящее имя: фамилию Кордюрой можно приблизительно перевести как «Клеточкины» (на самом деле это название не расцветки ткани, а её типа, но сути это не меняет). Диппер-Ковшик — прозвище, данное мальчику из-за родимого пятна в виде одноименного созвездия на лбу под волосами, так-то он Мейсон.
  • Тоби Решительный — аверсия, потому что самооценка у него ниже плинтуса.
  • Пасифика Нортвест — имя героини напрямую связано с географическим положением Гравити фолз — северо-западное побережье Тихого океана.
• Горизонт отчаяния — Мэйбл переходит его в серии про ярмарку, когда после очередного перемещения в прошлое (Диппер пытался исправить свой косяк с мячиком, попавшим в глаз Венди, который привёл к тому, что она начала встречаться с Робби) не выигрывает Пухлю (её забрала Пасифика). Дипперу приходится всё-таки вернуть их в прошлое ещё раз.
• Гранд-финал: В последних трёх сериях Билл Шифр находит способ слить наш мир с измерением Кошмаров и устраивает в Гравити-Фоллс безумное фрик-шоу, которое он и Форд называют «Странногеддон». Три дня спустя Диппер, Венди и Стэн собирают уцелевших и идут воевать Билла на Хижинатроне.
• Два тебя: оказалось, убитый копир в подвале Стэна умеет копировать людей, но получившиеся клоны уязвимы к воде. Пытаясь пригласить Венди на танец, Диппер с перепугу клонировал себя десять раз (одного клона зажевало), и началось веселье.
• Длинное имя: единорожица Селестабелль-а-беттабелль. Другие единороги называют её «Си-бет».
• Друг всему живому — Мэйбл.
• Думать о красе ногтей — даже в тюрьме Гидеон тщательно укладывает волосы.
• Житель Страны Эльфов — Мэйбл. А банда Билла в полном составе — в прямом смысле гости из страны тёмных эльфов
• Жизнь в Приключенске — о да!
• Жуткие детишки: Гидеон балансирует на грани, Билл Сайфер, вселившийся в тело Диппера — давит педаль в пол.
• Зловещая долина: играется нарочно с клоном-Замятышем и с любым несчастным, в которого вселяется Билл.
• Злодей, молящий о пощаде — Билл в финале.
• Злой джинн — Билл Шифр, педаль в пол. Он вашу часть сделки вывернет так, что вы взвоете, а свою вообще выполнять не обязан.
• Зомби-апокалипсис: в начале второго сезона Диппер случайно устраивает его.
• Избиение младенцев (метафора) — причём с настоящим младенцем! Когда Дитя Времени попытался остановить Билла Шифра и его Странногеддон, тот испепелил его одним движением пальца.
• Каков родитель, таково и дитя — Стэнли Пайнс явно пошел в мать, патологическую лгунью.
• Крутой баритон: одно слово — Автор.
• Крутой ботан — Диппер, решающий проблемы с помощью смекалки и дневника, но и физически постоять за себя может. Форд, особенно после 30 лет в другом измерении.
• Крутой в дурацком колпаке — Зус. Мастер на все руки, далеко не дурак (хотя и выглядит простачком), силой тоже не обделён. Большую часть Странногеддона провёл, бродя по апокалиптическим окресностям и помогая всем, кого встречал.
• Крутой дедуля: у Стэна седина, вставные зубы, слуховой аппарат, катаракта и пузо, да. А ещё — кулаки как гири и координация движений, как у космонавта. Его братец не отстаёт.
• Крутой для битья — Дэн Кордюрой. При всей его демонстративной маскулинности мы видим его то в ужасе удирающим от мужикотавров, то пытающимся подольститься к Биллу…
• Крутой пацифист: Диппер ненавидит драки, но если его довели, или кто-то из близких в опасности…
• Крутой шкет — Диппер.
• Лицемер: Гидеон бросает в лицо Дипперу, что тот без дневника — ноль без палочки, хотя сам полагается на свой экземпляр куда больше и без него стоит куда меньше. После нескольких таких заявлений Диппер просто набивает ему морду.
• Лицемерный юмор:
  • Тоби Решительный говорит, что близнецам должно быть стыдно, после того как они его ложно обвинили. А сам только что признался в извращениях с участием картонного изображения Шандры.
  • Зус заявил, что игра «Подземелья, подземелья, и ещё подземелья» для ботанов, а сам он ушёл к своим друзьям (ещё большим ботанам), которые играют в RPG живого действия.
  • В гранд-финале Ленивая Сьюзан, у которой один глаз всегда закрыт, заявляет, что одноглазые ей не нравятся, после чего Гренда сказала, что она и её друзья не любят иногородцев (к которым относится Мейбл — одна из её лучших подруг, и Мариус — её парень из Австрии.)
• Маленькие гадёныши — Гидеон и Пасифика. Оба в итоге перевоспитываются.
• Мальчик для битья — Томпсон. Педаль в пол — ему это нравится, потому что так он сердце группы друзей Венди.
• Манипуляция воспоминаниями: основатель Общества Слепого глаза Фиддлфорд Адрон Макгакет изобрёл пистолет, стирающий память по ассоциативному принципу, которым Общество подчищало память горожан о местных чудесах. Как выясняется, если стереть человеку разум, вместе с ним будут стёрты любые сущности, забравшиеся в этот разум.
• Микротрещины в канве: конец первого сезона 15 июля, а день рождения Зуса седьмого, хотя это уже восьмая серия второго сезона.
• Морда кирпичом: агент Пауэрс. Из-за врождённой патологии неспособен воспринимать юмор. На случай штурма Хижины Чудес тренировался радостно кричать, но не пригодилось.
• Музыкальный триппер — мелодия заставки. Видео вверху статьи, кликать на свой страх и риск.
• Награда, достойная предателя / Пнуть сукиного сына: с началом Странногеддона Престон Нортвест предлагает Биллу свои услуги в качестве квислинга. Билл считает, что веселее будет перемешать все отверстия на лице у Престона и оставить его в агонии на асфальте. Как ни странно, играется с прикрученным фитильком: после расколдования горожан из трона Билла Престон (как и другие горожане, подвергшиеся карательному превращению) жив-здоров, и физиономия у него в порядке. Впрочем, он сам себя наказал, вложив все состояние в «акции Странногеддона» и закономерно обанкротившись после победы сил добра.
• На вкус как дружба — в эпизоде «Гольфовая война» именно так началось потепление отношений между Мейбл и Пасификой Нортвест — первая поделилась с вредной девчонкой тако… правда, ей до этого пришлось объяснить саму концепцию такого понятия, как «поделиться».
• Направо кругом — Гидеон в последней серии.
• Нахрена родня такая, лучше буду сиротой — семейство Нортвестов. Неизвестно, какими методами родители делают из дочери идеальную светскую львицу, но после одних намёков Пасифику становится жалко. Впрочем, в конце она рвётся их спасать — мол, хоть они и сволочи, но всё же родители, жалко. Отец Стэна рассматривал детей исключительно с точки зрения «вот вырастут и будут зарабатывать мне денег».
  • Так в серии «Пленники разума» думает Диппер о вечно шпыняющем его Стэне, однако побывав у дяди в памяти узнал, что тот таким грубоватым способом старается закалить мальчика.
• Непреднамеренное совпадение — кто же знал, что эпизод про Гиффани, после 2017 года будет напоминать другую (но куда более светлую и мягкую) компьютерную яндере? Хорошо, что до «Just Giffany» на додумались…
  • И ещё есть совпадение с «тем самым» страшноватым выпуском про Робота-Зайца из «Ну, погоди!». Когда Гиффани «вселяется» в аниматроника-девочку, похожую на этого робозайца, а потом начинает так же, как он, стрелять из пальца электричеством, поневоле думаешь — а не смотрел ли режиссёр «Ну, погоди»? А если не смотрел, то он наверняка удивится совпадению, посмотрев этот мультсериал (когда он приезжал в Россию, фанаты подарили ему сборку лучших советских мультиков).
• Неформал — значит, лузер — Робби, зигзагом. Поначалу кажется сабжем, со временем оказывается вполне адекватным парнем.
• Обаятельный мошенник — дядя Стэн.
• Обаяшка — Мэйбл.
• Обмен телами: один из экспериментов Автора — ковёр, меняющий разумы ходящих по нему людей местами при помощи статического электричества.
• Огненная шевелюра — огненный характер — Кордюрои. Кроме Венди, которая передавила педаль так, что в машинке что-то сломалось и получилась инверсия.
• Одинаковые имена: одного из гномов зовут Шмебулок (и он умеет говорить только «Шмебулок»). Из воспоминаний Автора мы узнаём, что раньше среди гномов жил, видимо, отец Шмебулока, а звали этого отца Шмебулок-старший (и он умел говорить только «Шмебулок-старший»). А вот откуда он тогда уже знал, что он «старший»?…
  • Может, у него уже был сын — неизвестно, как гномы растут и стареют.
  • В Gravity Falls: Lost Legends выясняется, что это проклятие. Раз в год оно спадает и Шмебулок может разговаривать нормально. Правда, раскрыть своё настоящее имя он не успевает.
• Папа-волк — дядя Стэн. Своих детей у него, правда, нет, но за внучатых племянников начистит рыло хоть птеродактилю, хоть стаду зомби, хоть всемогущему демону.
• Поджог, убийство и переход на красный свет — среди многочисленных преступлений дяди Стэна — торговля мопсами и подделка лотерейных билетов.
• Просто друг — Диппер для Венди.
• Пришелец из прошлого — Квентин Трембли.
• Протащить под радарами — возможно, рекордсмен среди диснеевских мультсериалов. Помимо шуточек с двойным дном (намёков на гомосексуализм нет — про это тут открытым текстом), протащены откровенно пугающие моменты, особенно для младшей аудитории — включая суровый боди-хоррор и разборку детей на молекулы в прямом эфире. Ладно, это был Дитя времени, и он регенерирует через тысячу лет, но и главгерои едва избежали подобной судьбы.
• Реальность нереалистична — внутримировой пример. Диппера всегда бесит, что туристы ведутся на «экспонаты» дяди Стэна (собственноручно изготовляемые им из разного барахла и, в одном неканоническом случае, из самих туристов), когда вокруг целый лес, полный настоящих криптидов. А когда Диппер каким-то невероятным образом притащил в Хижину настоящего гигантского монстра, того сочли подделкой. Не говоря уже о том, что настоящий монстр оказался опасен и для туристов, и для сотрудников.
• Родные братья противоположны: рационалист Диппер и безбашенная Мейбл. А также гений Стэнфорд и раздолбай и силач Стэнли.
• Ружьё Чехова — дофига и больше.
  • Изображение Билла Шифра в конце заставки. И не только там.
  • Потайная дверь за торговым автоматом в Хижине.
  • Бурная реакция Стэна на собственную восковую статую.
  • Стиратель памяти и обратимость его эффекта — нужно показать жертве запись потерянных воспоминаний. Стреляет несколько раз, в конце используется, чтобы стереть Билла из разума Стэна, а затем восстановить его память с помощью дневника Мейбл.
  • Символы вокруг изображения Билла на заставке — субверсия! Да, это пророчество, согласно которому десять человек могут образовать круг силы и уничтожить Сайфера, и оно уже было заработало в финале… но тут Стэн и Форд подрались в самый ответственный момент, а пока их разнимали — пришёл «лесник» и всех разогнал. Пришлось побеждать его другим путём…
  • Подмигивающая Венди — всегда фальшивая, у них с Диппером другой тайный жест друг для друга.
  • Гарпунный пистолет, который Мейбл получает в первом эпизоде, после чего пистолет долго не играет в сюжете никакой роли. Внезапно стреляет в самом конце первого сезона, когда половина зрителей успела про него забыть, а вторая половина решила, что про него забыли авторы. Судя по всему, это намеренная игра с тропом «Ружьё Чехова».
• Рыхлый пухлик — Гидеон.
• Самоубийственно выглядящий прыжок — все главные герои хоть раз его исполняли, спасаясь от очередной аномалии.
• Серобуромалиновая мораль: Билл абсолютно не умеет сопереживать, не имеет понятия о добре и зле и в своих действиях руководствуется желанием левой пятки пополам с садизмом. Однако его неспособность понять, почему люди готовы пожертвовать всем ради других, является его слабостью.
• Сиделка чудака — в какой-то степени Диппер для Мэйбл.
• Символ из второй части — Стэнли Пайнс, брат-близнец Стэнфорда Пайнса. И Билл Шифр, который появляется в самом конце первого сезона.
• Синдром Элджернона — история о том, как Пухля превратился в гения.
• Сиротинушка: согласно дополнительным материалам, Билл Шифр убил собственных родителей.
• Справочник необходимых знаний — тут его почему-то называют «дневник», но вообще-то это энциклопедия.
  • В оригинале «journal», то есть лабораторный журнал для записи наблюдений за всей местной паранормальщиной.
• Старый козёл с золотым сердцем — дядя Стэн одной фразой.
• Странности в первой части — в серии «Пленники разума» дядя Стэн искренне интересуется у Ленивой Сьюзен: «А что у вас с глазом?». Но в серии «Рассказ о двух Стэнах» выясняется, что глаз Сьюзен повредило одно из устройств Форда, а дядя Стэн при этом присутствовал. Более того — лично уверял бедняжку Сью, что «это скоро пройдёт».
  • Обоснуй: свидание оказалось до ужаса скучным, Стэн готов был что угодно ляпнуть. Но всё равно странно, что Сьюзен никак на этот вопрос не отреагировала
• Страшдество и Робанука — Летоуин.
• Такой крутой, что уже смешно — мужикотавры как вид.
  • Дровосек Дэн от них почти не отстает — настолько суров, что ловит рыбу руками, а потом ее метелит.
• Такой серьёзный, что уже смешно — Диппер.
• Техника безопасности: при всей своей гениальности, Форд её категорически не соблюдает. При постройке портала туда первым делом затянуло Макгакета, а позже — самого Форда, поскольку они не озаботились хотя бы решётчатой дверью. А когда тридцать лет спустя Форда оттуда достали — через пару дней его затянуло уже в игру DD&MD, поскольку он хранил опасный меняющий реальность артефакт в мешке с игральными костями.
• Тот, кого нельзя называть — один из приспешников Билла. Субверсия — представляя сабж публике, Билл тут же перечисляет все его имена.
• Трикстер — Билл Шифр же! Дядя Стэн, впрочем, тоже тот ещё трикстер.
• Ужас у холодильника — в Gravity Falls: Lost Legends одна из криптограмм гласит «CIHPER LIVES!». Билла не так-то просто уничтожить, к сожалению.
• Уровень связности серий: шестой в первом сезоне и седьмой во втором. Да что там, даже детали из филлеров часто всплывают в последующих сериях.
• Шоу внутри шоу: «Утка-детектив» и куча трешовейших ужастиков, которые Диппер и Венди смотрят для поржать, а также кукольное представление, которое ставит Мейбл.
• Эй, все сюда!: в финальном бою участвуют не только почти все жители городка, но и большинство окрестных монстров.

«Гравити Фолз» (англ. Gravity Falls) — американский анимационный телевизионный сериал, созданный Алексом Хиршем и компанией Disney Television Animation для телеканалов Disney Channel и Disney XD.

Мультсериал повествует о приключениях двойняшек — мальчика Диппера и девочки Мэйбл Пайнс, которые проводят летние каникулы у дядюшки Стэна в вымышленном американском городке под названием Гравити Фолз.

Премьера состоялась 15 июня 2012 года на канале Disney Channel. 14 июня 2014 года было объявлено, что премьера второго сезона состоится 1 и 4 августа 2014 года на каналах Disney Channel и Disney XD соответственно. 20 ноября 2015 года Алекс Хирш заявил, что сериал завершится на втором сезоне. Последний эпизод второго сезона под названием «Странногеддон: где-то в лесах» был показан 15 февраля 2016 года.

Сюжет

Действие разворачивается летом в вымышленном городке Гравити Фолз;в штате Орегон, куда близнецы Диппер и Мэйбл Пайнс отправляются на каникулы к своему двоюродному дедушке Стэну. Он — владелец сувенирного магазина — «приманки для туристов» — «Хижина Чудес». Поначалу героям скучно, но вскоре они обнаруживают, что в городе происходит нечто сверхъестественное. Диппер случайно находит в лесу дневник под номером три, автор которого неизвестен. В нём подробно описываются аномалии Гравити Фолз. Диппер сразу решает узнать тайны странного городка и найти автора дневника, но на каждом шагу Диппера и Мэйбл подстерегает опасность. Окрестности Гравити Фолз полны таинственных мест и странных существ.
